He's all over the place on the subject though. He's also talked about how there IS value in imagination, but that's not what he pays for when he buys a game, and that he can just imagine something cool without paying anything. Once I made peace with the fact that these episodes of intense, unprompted negative emotions are caused by chemical imbalance in my brain and not a moral failing, I started therapy and took meds. I think for people who blame themselves for their own mental illnesses, "it's just chemicals" is a good mindset to get out of it. First step is to recognize it's a disease to be treated, and not your fault.

I loved them at the time and the love I felt was real, but things change. That doesn't mean that I was wrong to love that person, because fungibility doesn't mean incorrect. It just means that things change. Love is not necessarily eternal, but it is real. Feelings may be chemically based, the same way that thoughts are electric signals in the brain, but that does not make them any less truthful or tangible than a word on paper. A science textbook from 1930s was right at the time it was written, but now it is wrong. Truth is evolving and adapting to the new realities we find ourselves in.

It is about the fact that they can, in theory, be perfectly replicated and induced in the absence of any external stimuli required for their natural function. Will you consider love achieved through medication or other such methods equal to and just as valid as the one you have experienced? It is what I find ironic about Nihlists. They have enough awareness to know the universe it's cruel, yet they make it almost on par with God. I think people got so down on finding out that things can be explained a little easier that they don't realize that it is just as amazing as the aetherial, spiritual version. i relate so much to Woolie's stories on being raised religious and having to break yourself out of that pretty much singlehandedly. I remember him getting clowned on the old channel and such for the "love is chemicals" thing. it was super comforting, being in my teenage years and trying to put together my worldview from scratch, to hear something so close to that explanation that i had built for myself. well, it's not that simple either. like yeah while yes tecnically the societal concept is chemicals it's not cause of you feeling love, human pairs not resulting in children is a very recent thing, like many other behaviour changes that had no tims to be affected by natural selection (for example some people argue that C-section is artificially selecting women who can't give birth naturally) and there the eternal discussion if we really can nail down how much animals think

It's just neurons and axons causing ion imbalances. Does it make thoughts less magical? What we do and how we feel is our own truth, and how we perceive reality. It's reductive. Science and philosophy aren't opposing. You have to have one with the other. If I can't help my patient experience that joy because it's too poetic, then what's the point in me knowing the science behind it? What's the point in knowing the method of iambic pentameter or musical theory if it isn't used to create verse or song? Chemistry is great to know, but wisdom comes from knowing how to use everything in your power to rebalance it. Hell we don't even know how a lot of brain chemistry works, turns out the main theory behind depression and Serotonin might be wrong, so maybe the poetic is arguably more true than the chemistry 😂.

Love is just chemicals, but so is your ability to find that fact cringe or sad or beautiful. There is nothing except us, huddled around a campfire in an infinite night that is indifferent to our lives, our deaths, and our suffering. And that means we're all alone, sure, but it also means we only have each other. If heaven does not exist, we are morally obligated to construct it, whether through making the world a kinder, more gentler place or by pulling a San Junipero and allowing for human near-immortality, preferably both.
I struggle so much with what people call love, because everyone seems to define it slightly differently and if you love someone then theres different rules on what that means you think, and what you'll do for them, like theres some unstated agreement. And then I come off as cold when I dont want to say it because I want to be clear... even though in practice it's probably the same feeling I have of committing, adoring, caring... but i find the word uncomfortable. I'm sure there are others who are as spock like but it can be disheartening to feel like I'm a robot

As much fun as we have with it, I’ve always felt bad for the damaging experiences Woolie has had with his faith. My family and I have rejected The Church for many years because of problems we’ve had with what it does to people and the kind of environment it creates. We’ve been disillusioned by the institution, but still choose to believe and hold our own private faiths. Unfortunately, Woolie was taught that you can’t have one without the other. He was raised by a very oppressive system that prioritized unquestioned obedience over actually teaching and nurturing. Anytime something didn’t add up to him, he just got slapped down and told to stop asking questions. As a result, he lost faith not only in the system, but what it was supposed to represent as well. Hearing that he equates “Getting out of the Church” with “Getting out of believing in God” is very sad for me to hear, because the two shouldn’t necessarily be so closely entwined. Just one of many, MANY examples of someone pushed away from a good message because it was taught without proper care. I’m glad that Woolie is a genuinely good person who was able to determine right and wrong without it having to be written down in a book for him, because a lot of people who go through the negative experiences that he did come out far more damaged.

We know that fire is made out of heat via friction or combustion, but that doesn't make fireworks any less cool. Scoring a point in a sport doesn't really further human development, but it's still hype to root for a team you like. Movies and TV show are just animated pixels or recorded actors, but that doesn't stop us from loving them and learning from their stories. The thing is Woolie, we're, as a species, evolved to the point of enlightenment to the information that love can be explained biochemically. Some of us may see love partially as a survival instinct thing and as such maybe that's why they love the way they do and would argue it being a spiritual thing. That said, people can and have already somewhat diverted from the choose mate for next of kin 'cause survival, because that's not exactly necessary for survival anymore. So if, I a 6 foot tall guy ever find a willing 7 some foot Amazonian woman, well, that'll be what'll really get the chemicals flowing, y'know what I mean?.

I agree with a lot of this, especially coming from an escaped religious background too. People in so much society want to contribute to largely unreal abstracts and constructs and - from a religious background, once you realize something people given that much time and energy to is a lie, you start to see the rest of the lies people love to hold and it DOES make you nihilistic when you're young. You start looking for answers to NOT feel that way because it can't just be that and that's all. You get older and find out how if things don't matter, you too are supposed to add your own meaning that makes life work for you because life has no meaning beyond what we add to it.
I am a pretty pragmatic person. As soon as I start moving down the chemical route it becomes a slippery slope for "Why can't I just inject this happiness, why are you making me work for it?" Both nihilism and anti-nihilism agree that there is no inherent meaning or value in life, but while the nihilist despairs over it, the anti-nihilist takes it as an opportunity to create their own value. The nihilist says "if it's just chemicals then nothing matters" while the anti-nihilist says "it's precisely because life isn't pre-defined by a higher power that makes it so beautiful and engaging."

I’d say chemicals and science are pretty magical, we are just used to it because it’s the world we live in but if you were to describe our science as a magic system in another setting it’d be the most creative and wild one out there. Plus if magic is the unknown then that’s O.K too because the more you push your boundaries of knowledge, the greater the circumference of the unknown to you. My philosophy goes "We were not lucky, you were not chance, you were not given an opportunity. You were inevitable. You were always going to happen and nothing could ever stop it. You are supposed to be, you are supposed to continue. So go and continue. The horizon is coming, and it is your duty to meet it." The universe happening the way it did is a 1:1 probability since we don't definitely know of any other universes that have or could exist. Our ultimate fate and destiny is unknown, but we have one. It is our duty to find out what that is, and to fulfill it. Be it fighting, or perishing like a dog. Personally, I chose to fight. Fight fight, against the coming of that good night. As should everyone.

I think it all comes down to your personal interpretation of nihilism. Do you think nothing matters thus everything is pointless? Or do you think nothing matters so you allow everything to have a point. I would fall more on the latter side because hope and optimism are important things that all this fleshy corporeal body to function correctly, the former makes me want to just cease to be and wish to disassemble into atoms until there is nothing left.
I'm going to be honest, I don't understand atheism. But that's more because of how I was raised, several taught me God, or Modimo as we say in my language, is not a person but a kind of a force indifferent to our existence. And can mean different things to different people. Best way I kind put it is that ti me existence is God, so learning that my emotions were chemicals in my head changed nothing for me. Because an indifferent force lead to me having those things.
atheism is ironically a belief system as well since you can't 100% prove the inexistence of god and for each there is a reason for join it. For me it was kind of natural, like i used to pray and go to the church as kid but i stopped believing just like i stopped believing in Santa and fairy tooth and for a brief moment in my teens i became anti religion but because of fundamentalism. Now i'm not a militant so i'm indifferent to people joining religions and now as an adult i feel like there are so many religions and takes on god/gods that the chances of any of them being actually being real are as high as the chance of we being part of the DC universe and kinda similar to you, i think if there is a god he doesn't care about what we do, not evil or good.
And as an atheist, I really appreciate that 'existence is God' perspective, because I can think of it as an allegory and discuss on the same page with you. That way, we don't get stuck in an argument about some guy, but can actually discuss the themes in scripture.

i can tell you why, our brain's main thing is to learn, categorize and then figure out ways to predict and control the outcomes out of what we learned In all levels, in any activity, it's our survival mechanism. seeing something and Not knowing, for our brain is as terrifying as dying. And that can result in different behaviours but it ends with us desperate, trying to calm ourselves by engaging in other activities that we already are familiar with. There are many ramifications of this behavious but one of them that probably applies to you is that, with modern society(actually since cities became a thing) attending to our basic human needs we engage in less activities, less things to make us feel calm, so when we are faced with incertainty we are mostly powerless and left alone with an anxiety with "no cause".

Everything that could potentially be better also carries the risk of becoming much worse, or wasting valuable time, effort, money. Maybe it hurts in the long run to avoid that stuff, but frankly I'm still debating whether a long run is worth it.

Eh, it worked the opposite way for me. Got me out of depression. Once I made peace with the fact that these episodes of intense, unprompted negative emotions are caused by chemical imbalance in my brain and not a moral failing, I started therapy and took meds.
I think for people who blame themselves for their own mental illnesses, "it's just chemicals" is a good mindset to get out of it. First step is to recognize it's a disease to be treated, and not your fault.

Feelings may be chemically based, the same way that thoughts are electric signals in the brain, but that does not make them any less truthful or tangible than a word on paper. A science textbook from 1930s was right at the time it was written, but now it is wrong. Truth is evolving and adapting to the new realities we find ourselves in.

well, it's not that simple either. like yeah while yes tecnically the societal concept is chemicals it's not cause of you feeling love, human pairs not resulting in children is a very recent thing, like many other behaviour changes that had no tims to be affected by natural selection (for example some people argue that C-section is artificially selecting women who can't give birth naturally) and there the eternal discussion if we really can nail down how much animals think

What we do and how we feel is our own truth, and how we perceive reality. To blind ourselves to that joy because we reduce such wonder to its base form is as reductive as to say we know what getting drunk feels like because we know the chemical formula for alcohol.
It's reductive. Science and philosophy aren't opposing. You have to have one with the other. Holistic views of what the individual is and what we need isn't only based in blood tests and best practice guides, but by talking with and empathising with another. If we just focus on the chemicals we blind ourselves to reality, and get just as caught up in the (real but functionally irreal) world of chemistry rather than the wonder of medicine within humanity.
Being poetic is vital to this, because a chemical composition cannot express the joy of a beautiful summer morning. If I can't help my patient experience that joy because it's too poetic, then what's the point in me knowing the science behind it? What's the point in knowing the method of iambic pentameter or musical theory if it isn't used to create verse or song? Chemistry is great to know, but wisdom comes from knowing how to use everything in your power to rebalance it.
Hell we don't even know how a lot of brain chemistry works, turns out the main theory behind depression and Serotonin might be wrong, so maybe the poetic is arguably more true than the chemistry 😂.

I struggle so much with what people call love, because everyone seems to define it slightly differently and if you love someone then theres different rules on what that means you think, and what you'll do for them, like theres some unstated agreement. And then I come off as cold when I dont want to say it because I want to be clear... even though in practice it's probably the same feeling I have of committing, adoring, caring... but i find the word uncomfortable. As much fun as we have with it, I’ve always felt bad for the damaging experiences Woolie has had with his faith.
My family and I have rejected The Church for many years because of problems we’ve had with what it does to people and the kind of environment it creates. We’ve been disillusioned by the institution, but still choose to believe and hold our own private faiths.
Unfortunately, Woolie was taught that you can’t have one without the other. He was raised by a very oppressive system that prioritized unquestioned obedience over actually teaching and nurturing. Anytime something didn’t add up to him, he just got slapped down and told to stop asking questions. As a result, he lost faith not only in the system, but what it was supposed to represent as well.
Hearing that he equates “Getting out of the Church” with “Getting out of believing in God” is very sad for me to hear, because the two shouldn’t necessarily be so closely entwined. Just one of many, MANY examples of someone pushed away from a good message because it was taught without proper care. I’m glad that Woolie is a genuinely good person who was able to determine right and wrong without it having to be written down in a book for him, because a lot of people who go through the negative experiences that he did come out far more damaged.

The thing is Woolie, we're, as a species, evolved to the point of enlightenment to the information that love can be explained biochemically. Some of us may see love partially as a survival instinct thing and as such maybe that's why they love the way they do and would argue it being a spiritual thing. That said, people can and have already somewhat diverted from the choose mate for next of kin 'cause survival, because that's not exactly necessary for survival anymore. So if, I a 6 foot tall guy ever find a willing 7 some foot Amazonian woman, well, that'll be what'll really get the chemicals flowing, y'know what I mean?.
this whole 'love is just chemicals' sort of thing kind of gives me hope that I'll find a relationship that's right for me. Obviously it does go deeper than just chemicals, you have to consider whether you're compatible or not but making it seem so simple like it's just some random reaction to liking someone's presence makes it seem so much more optimistic to me. I am a pretty pragmatic person. As soon as I start moving down the chemical route it becomes a slippery slope for "Why can't I just inject this happiness, why are you making me work for it?" The nihilist says "nothing matters and so life has no value" while the anti-nihilist says "nothing matters and so the value of life is what you make of it." Both nihilism and anti-nihilism agree that there is no inherent meaning or value in life, but while the nihilist despairs over it, the anti-nihilist takes it as an opportunity to create their own value.

Ya I always agreed with Woolie on this, I had forgotten the clips in question where he mentioned them though so that’s cool you guys delved back into the old channel to find them.
I’d say chemicals and science are pretty magical, we are just used to it because it’s the world we live in but if you were to describe our science as a magic system in another setting it’d be the most creative and wild one out there.
Plus if magic is the unknown then that’s O.K too because the more you push your boundaries of knowledge, the greater the circumference of the unknown to you. The more you know the more your aware of what you don’t know.

I think it all comes down to your personal interpretation of nihilism. Do you think nothing matters thus everything is pointless? Or do you think nothing matters so you allow everything to have a point. I would fall more on the latter side because hope and optimism are important things that all this fleshy corporeal body to function correctly, the former makes me want to just cease to be and wish to disassemble into atoms until there is nothing left.
I'm going to be honest, I don't understand atheism. But that's more because of how I was raised, several taught me God, or Modimo as we say in my language, is not a person but a kind of a force indifferent to our existence. And can mean different things to different people.
Best way I kind put it is that ti me existence is God, so learning that my emotions were chemicals in my head changed nothing for me. Because an indifferent force lead to me having those things.

For me it was kind of natural, like i used to pray and go to the church as kid but i stopped believing just like i stopped believing in Santa and fairy tooth and for a brief moment in my teens i became anti religion but because of fundamentalism. Now i'm not a militant so i'm indifferent to people joining religions and now as an adult i feel like there are so many religions and takes on god/gods that the chances of any of them being actually being real are as high as the chance of we being part of the DC universe and kinda similar to you, i think if there is a god he doesn't care about what we do, not evil or good.
And as an atheist, I really appreciate that 'existence is God' perspective, because I can think of it as an allegory and discuss on the same page with you. That way, we don't get stuck in an argument about some guy, but can actually discuss the themes in scripture.
What's the point in believing in a God of any kind if that God has absolutely no influence or bearing on your life and as you say can mean anything to anyone? Isn't that the same as living like you believe in no God at all?
@@DemonFireRain that's a very "religion like" point of view and very interesting to see it and analyzing on a "human point of view". Why the existence of a god has to have a point? why can't he just created existence and never done anything ever again? We all project our way of thinking in to the world, can't be helped, so of course if something created existence it has to have a motivation, a reason, if it has a reason you can reason with him, you can talk to him, bargain something through diplomacy(praying), because our brain can't process the fact existence is chaotic, out of our control and can't be conviced to help us.
@@ricardomiles2957 if it doesn't have a point there's no point in believing it. If the difference between "there is a god" and "there is not a god" is no difference to your life whatsoever, then there's not point giving any thought to "there is a god". Nothing changes.
I know he actually argues materialism of the mind, a perfectly good and even the most likely scenario of how the mind functions, and that's perfectly fine, but he argues it like a woman scorned on top of his smug pseudo intellectualism despite not even having more than most basic scientific understanding of what brain is and reducing human qualia as a whole to "chemicals", and for that alone he deserves to be mocked endlessly.

Call me a nihilist if you want, because I do understand that nothing has any higher or ultimate meaning. We make up whatever meaning we want, or none at all. Most people can live like that, and good for them. I can't. I can't even adequately explain why I can't. Guess Kreia was right. Apathy is death.

i can tell you why, our brain's main thing is to learn, categorize and then figure out ways to predict and control the outcomes out of what we learned In all levels, in any activity, it's our survival mechanism. seeing something and Not knowing, for our brain is as terrifying as dying. And that can result in different behaviours but it ends with us desperate, trying to calm ourselves by engaging in other activities that we already are familiar with. There are many ramifications of this behavious but one of them that probably applies to you is that, with modern society(actually since cities became a thing) attending to our basic human needs we engage in less activities, less things to make us feel calm, so when we are faced with incertainty we are mostly powerless and left alone with an anxiety with "no cause".
@@ricardomiles2957 Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Part of it, at least. Resorting to the simple things we enjoy or care about, feels like the only way to be happy sometimes. Everything that could potentially be better also carries the risk of becoming much worse, or wasting valuable time, effort, money. Maybe it hurts in the long run to avoid that stuff, but frankly I'm still debating whether a long run is worth it.
