Reenacting the Vietnam War (Part 1/2)

- We went to North Carolina where a group of war vets and history buffs realistically reenact the Vietnam War.
Over the last 50 years war reenactment has gone from something guys at the Elks Club did on the weekend to get away from their wives to a full-blown obsession among history buffs with enough free time to make the experience as true to life as possible. Along with the increased intensity has come an increased demand for variety. The Vietnam War has typically been forbidden territory, but reenactment groups around the country have begun collecting their rice hats and period-appropriate M16s for pretend skirmishes with fake Viet Cong. Thomas embeds with the Virginia-Carolina Military History Association as they embark on their first tour through Vietnam...in North Carolina.

His hipster glasses aren't even out of place here.
Right! He’s even terrified of the gun shots he’s got it down, terrified look on his face even though he’s in a controlled environment he’s fresh out of Woodstock brother! Peace man yeahhh
well, when you think about it hipster styles have to come from somewhere. And hipsterism is just coopting 40s - 60s styles.
Because nothing on the back of our skin is new under the sun,it's everybody else trying to change with the future that looks funny. It's just that everything just looks *stupid* now. There's a reason that old stuff lingers, it just looked good. the 1980's through 2000's wrecked everything.
Woody Allen? Looks more like private Joker from Full Metal Jacket.
Samuel L. Jackson no
I've done WWII reenacting (as a German) for years. It takes a long time after a war is over before reenacting becomes politically acceptable for it. Vietnam war reenactment is just getting started. What makes it sensitive in the US is that we lost that war because of politics and lack of civil support, yet many vets from the war have nothing against it, and even support it because it brings greater awareness of their sacrifice for our country.
Well said man, well said.
Exactly were doing a hamburger hill reenactment in California
Reenacting the vietnam war aka going into the woods and doing heroin
Either way, inaccurate or not, this made me laugh.

Reenactments I think is a way of respectfully showing those who are alive from past real life events that we do appreciate what they did, to remember and honor the sacrifices of many.

What unit are you with?

Actually combat in Vietnam wasn't as bad like World War II, Battles in that war were far more devastating due to the total scale of warfare like D Day and the Battle Of The Bulge

I find the stuff Vice reports on to be really interesting but the way they go about is very juvenile. The 'journalists' seem to mostly be 20 - something, upper-middle class and almost always have some sort of half-concealed sneering tone. To me, it's written mostly by quasi-hipster, young, New Yorkers for quasi-hipster, young, New Yorkers who like to think that they know more about the world than other people because they have one friend from Europe or they once went on holiday to Japan. It's attitudes like this and the condescension towards people they perceive to be less educated that Vice so proudly shows off that makes many Americans hate the so-called "liberal media". To be NBC news, the BBC and CNN are not liberal media - but Vice is, and in the worst way. If they could try to be a bit more respectful a bit more impartial rather than constantly do these reports with this half-hidden sneer then they would be much better merely for the subjects they choose to look into. Look people in the eye, not down your nose.
I enjoy how you politely expressed your opinion. Thank you
cnn is more liberal than vice let's be real here. vice also improved over the past decade.

@Nick Arnold I think reenactments...might be full of pussies...who want to play army...
Lol. Airsoft isn't good for anything, dude.
Ciaran Butterly You literally have a fuck load of veterans (former real soldiers) doing this.
I'm pretty confused on how exactly you know when you die
Masao2k Same I don't understand that either
Masao2k It'll make a huge ass *SNAP* when you're fried at. I spent a bit of time at a similar event called Milsim West. It's an honor system thing, you go down if you think you got tagged or if you need a break.
I did the latter a lot.
Masao2k you know how? Fall and scream...
Masao2k I was told the people that get together discuss things before hand about who gets "shot" ect
its pretty choreographed. Theres lots of planning and discussion before the reenactment. It boils down to whichever side is supposed to win or lose, obviously on the losing side you're supposed to die. There are also officers that kinda act like referees and they can give the order when you're supposed to die.
I honestly don't like watching reenactors smile the whole time, I know, it's awesome, but in war I can't imagine a bunch of soldiers walking around smiling like they are playing some battlefield 3 for the first time.

why the hell does he not want them being filmed taking a break?
He doesn't realize that they are filming it to show behind the scenes
Yeah, he thought he was doing things in character.

It wasn't just the US in Vietnam. My father is an Aussie Vietnam Veteran.

My point is fairly evident in my post. If you're too stupid to see it then I can't help you.
It's apparent that you're trying to express some kind of disdain towards the American Vietnam Veterans, but are too simple to put into proper context. Perhaps you should give some thought to your choice of words, especially when you don't have any idea of who you are conversing with... what's the matter, that smoke getting to your little aussier head? BWAHHHHH!!
Furthermore, I didn't see any of Aussies in the wars we fought in Central America, Somalia, Grenada, Panama, PI Kuwait or otherwise, so get your facts straight before making an ass yourself. I'm sure your fellow countrymen wouldn't appreciate it. What are you 25 years old? hahah!

Australian Combat Engineer, Started as a LAV crewman. 9 years service, 22 months in Afghanistan. Oh, and looking at your comment history, I'd guess your full of shit but hey.. what does it matter. I'm on the wrong side of 40, champ. Don't know who you think you're calling a " little punk" You over reacted, it's as simple as that. I started that it wasnt just the US in vietnam and you flew off the handle. I would guess that anyone with any real combat experience would be a little bit more relaxed in these kinds of situations, learn to assess a situation before reacting. But hey, that's just what I was taught. Perhaps your " special forces" training taught you differently.
7 Brigade, 6RAR d coy ( originally) FOB Tarin Kowt as force protection for MTF-1 in 2010.
I suggest you use some of that " special forces" training you went through while I was swimming around in my fathers nutsack to assess the situation, understand that you've completely over reacted, made a mountain out of a molehill and basically, made a fuck-head of yourself.
Thanks for the laugh, Champ.

Hell yeah
I would join the Vietcong in the reenactment and talk vietnames so everyone would feel like a good ole Vietnam role play
Same with the swamps n delta in Louisiana. My old man was 199 LIB On a hunterkiller team recon. from 68-70. I went to Louisiana aka tigerland and everything he said was right. That’s where they sent infantry man before they got shipped to Nam. I also went hiking and camping in the jungles In Vietnam 4 years ago after my dads death from agent orange. There’s nothing like the real thing rats the size of dogs crazy snakes hug bugs very spooky like the ghosts still walk the landscape.. It had to of been hell fighting in that kinda environment. His unit of 8 men would go into the jungle for 30-40 days on patrol then come back to base for 2 or 3 day R&R freshen up then head back into the field. There is actually a book written about my father and his buddy’s when they were over there. I respect all vets but I have a special place in my heart for Vietnam vets. Best of the best. 199th OLD GUARD!!!!!

why does this guy always have a condescending tone in his voice about men just being men. did he really say there were no real battles in naam omg. i would love to see him say that at the local vfw at closing time or around a group of bikers. he would know about being terrified alright.lol
He's talking about how there weren't large scale "traditional" types of battles (Like the Battle of the Bulge). He's not discounting what our soldiers did in Vietnam, just explaining what went on there
+Marie Miller its called being a hipster, they judge people, it's what they do
+Jonathan chi-chi Very wrong. There was La Drang, Hue, Saigon, etc etc. There were many large scale battles in Vietnam.
+Jonathan chi-chi I guess it's not a battle but the tet offensive

Lol imagine both teams argue back and forth on who’s dead and who’s not dead 😂
No reenactment will ever be like Vietnam
It’s all fun and games until someone brings a real gun with real bullets. What’s the safety precautions for these re-enactments?
I have Vietnam War toy soldiers in 54mm (1/32 scale).
This is very interesting, to say the least.
I thought a Vietnam reenactment was just something American Dad made up.
+Loser Bro Productions What? Reenactments are a common thing, same with Vietnam. Neither is just something from some tv show. There are reenactments for lots of different things.
As a Marine veteran that spent two years in Vietnam I find this insulting to my dead friends sacrifice. It wasn't a fucking game it was blood and guts war with endless fear and to play this as a game years my heart apart. You'll NEVER pretend fear and death. It was a heartless and savage example of brutality of what men are capable of. Some died some went crazy and some came home traumatized and met at home with people spitting at you. I hope you never have to go to war. It's not something to be glorified.
Thank you for your service sir
This seems really fun to do, I don’t know why
Nam was hell
War is hell
This is why I used to follow you on Facebook. I love videos like this!
He's wrong at the beginning... our first defeat... he'll no we didn't lose vietnam... we withdrew due to the president afraid of riots back home in protest of the war... don't ever say we lost we didnt...
Face it you can't win every war.
No man he's wrong. you can't win every war no... but America never lost vietnam we were in fact winning before being dragged out
+StephenMorgan7 nah dude... we had withdrawn already. south vietnam just got massacred after we left
Actually if you think about it Vietnam was loosing immensely but they kept fighting due to the fact it was their country. If we would've continued we would've lost a lot of people but with drafting and such it wouldn't have been enough to lose. Although I am heavily against this war due to america killing many innocents had it continued the numbers would've just dropped and picked up for America while only dropping for Vietnam.
But with that said we America did suffer heavily (sorry couldn't edit original comment so added another)
I wonder if people back in the 18th century ever reenacted medieval battles or something. Or maybe medieval people reenacting the Punic wars.
The romans first did mock naval battles in the colosseum which is considered to be the first reenactment

Find the most screwed up overgrown weedpatch you can, one that's full of bugs, mesquito's etc. then run around in circles until your about to pass out then sit and wait patiently for hours. Then get up and run around in circles again. repeat over and over while carrying a huge pack until nothing makes any sense anymore and every inch of your body is chafed and bitten. Then your a grunt in Vietnam. OR re-enact air force in Vietnam just go sit in front of a window A/C unit on high and bitch about no ice cream at chow.....haha :)

Fly to DaNang but land in Pleiku instead, wait days for air trans to Da Nang, arrive in Da Nang get yelled at for being late and not arriving days earlier........wait for in country uniforms only to be told we should have gotten them in Saigon at in country processing......then some hot sleepless nights on cots napping and pulling security duty only to be flown to a rat hole on the DMZ which would make a garbage dump look like a 5 star hotel.........That's what I get when I let Uncle Sam plan by overseas vacations. :) But I wouldn't have changed a thing.....Semper Fi !!!!

Actually, historical reenactment's purpose is more educational, it's to show people how it all looked close-up. It being fun is just a nice bonus :v
In all my life I've never come across anybody that reenacts because they want to educate people who just stroll by because they like the loud explosions.
+Mr Mundy
Well, now you have. When I reenact and some people that came just for the tanks/explosions come up to me and start asking questions, it's the best feeling ever. The feeling that all my hard work wasn't a waste, that I taught them something, maybe even interested them in history. It's not just for fun, you don't do it to "play war". Reenactment is a way of showing the gruesome reality of war and teaching people history and respect to the ones that sacrificed their lives on the altar of war, so we could live peacefully.
One thing I've never understood about these reenactments, how do you know when you get killed? How does a person tell the difference between a fatal shot, a grazing shot, and a complete miss?
It's a bit like playing dodgeball without the balls, wouldn't you say?
i have asked my self exactly the same question. :D
I think i may answer your question when you reenact and your getting shot at you can choose if you die or not you can choose weather it be fatal or not. Unless you clearly get killed and you be a jerk and not die.
I do World War II reenacting and I will tell you, it's always a little sketchy how you "die" because, unless you are doing airsoft there are no projectile involved (thank God)...most military reenactors use blank firing firearms much like extras in a war movie...you can tell you are "hit" if you see a full-circle muzzle flash...you can also usually tell if somebody is aiming at you...of course, as in airsoft, there are always individuals who refuse to "take their hits"...as blanks are inherently dangerous due to the pressure wave created, a good rule of thumb is never to fire directly at somebody if they are within a 30-50 ft range...
WW2 here aswell
There is a pretty big difference between a blank fired in your direction and your direction. You can almost always tell when you get shot, the sound of the gun firing aimed at you is way louder. There also is the strategy "when out of ammo, die". Basically when you fire your last blank, run to some other position or just expose yourself and when you hear an enemy shoot in your direction, fall
Nolan Shay I did civil war reenacting as a kid and most of the time you died when you got tired or ran outa ammo other times just when u felt like it....normally theres not to many people in the battle so to make it last longer not very many die till the end.....bigger events with alot of soldiers will tell u ahead of times when and were to die though
