  • I've just posted a quick quiz for those of you who think you're pretty familiar with these 50mm lenses: www.lightandmat...
If you missed the videos about these lenses, they're here:
    • Lens Comparison: Sigma...
    • Lens Comparison: Canon...
Most of us can tell images from these lenses apart if they're side-by-side, but when they're not, it's a little trickier. Good luck!
The music is "Dirty Rhodes" by Kevin MacLeod, available here:

As I owned all three of the lenses, I was quite good at guessing. Fringing and chromatic aberation issues are giving up the Canon lenses.
Sigma 50mm 1.4 is the sharpest of all, but despite the dreamy results at 1.2, Canon 50mm 1.2L is a real bokeh monster.
My 50mm range choises went like Canon f1.8II, Canon f1.4, back to f1.8, Canon f1.2L and finally Sigma f1.4 Art.
Love your channel, thank you Matthew.

I did terrible the first couple of images, but then I noticed things that helped me get better:
Busy bokeh: Canon 1.4 or 1.2
A lot of CA: Canon 1.4
    Deformed bokeh balls: Canon 1.2
But, sometimes I was sure it was one lens and it turned out to be another. That's the real world, I guess: all sorts of factors interfering. Also, when stopping down to high f-values, it becomes nigh on impossible to tell. I'm sure if I took lots of images with all of these, I would improve my score, which was pretty average compared to others. But, since there aren't a lot of people who have all three lenses, that shows how important it is to be happy with the gear you have (since people won't be able to tell for certain just from looking at an image).

60% result here. Ive had sigma 50 non-art for 2 years and now canon 50 1.2 for one year. Frankly I expected to score higher :D

I wasn't expecting oval bokeh balls from the more pricy lenses.

+jeffry de meyer there will be in every kind of lens as soon as the light comes in a weird way.

Yeah apparently it is the shadow of the hood of the lens and the size of the image circle projected on the plane of the sensor.
I was planning to do a test with a lens hood and without but I forgot about it.

I have a 50 1.4 right now. Which one should I upgrade to? the L or the Art?

    • @MatthewGore
      @MatthewGore  9 лет назад

Rattu I'd go with the ART, but it's really a matter of personal preference.

Thats what I was leaning to since I already have the 35 Art. Thanks

Rattu First figure out why you want to upgrade, and if you want that focal length. I found that I prefer 35mm after using the Canon 50mm 1.4 for a while. That the images were quite soft and had lots of chromatic aberration at f1.4 probably contributed a bit in my avoidance of that lens, though, if I'm honest.

I only got 2 wrong, i admit a few I actually guessed but some I figured the answer via sharpness and bokeh. Just goes to show though that these lenses have way different price ranges and majority of the time your client wouldn't have a clue if you used a £300 lens or a £1.2k lens, all comes down to what you as a photographer feels works best for you and your work

I left clicked the images twice by accident, resetting my quiz progress so my score was a little higher than it should have been.

Thanks for reminding me. I had turned it off during an update, and forgot to turn it back on. It should be working now.

Thanks for your test. Proved for me both Canon are crap when it comes to bokeh. Basicly was always right on the Sigma. Sigma has a great lens.

Tomas Ramoska That's actually a pretty good score for this quiz! Looking at the stats, the scores are mostly falling between 5 and 7, with just a couple of outliers.

Waiting for review of tamron 15-30

Rombcorp Rombcorp I've shot the pictures for the comparison, but I'm not home at my own computer to do the video work, so this is going to take a little time. I won't be home until next week, and that will only be for a few days before I leave for another week to South Carolina. After that, I should be able to get on top of things.
