Honestly, as much as I prefer to watch subbed versions of things, the dubbed version of this is actually quite excellent. If subs are hard, don't worry about switching to the dubbed version.
The English version of this show is excellent. I think they're gonna miss things because sometimes there's a lot of writing and very little time to read it, and see what's on screen. This is such an excellent show, it would be a shame to watch the whole thing and miss it.
I dont think so, im not english native so english dub is not a emotional thing for me, thats happen a lot because you probably see this in english when you are young, but for me and a lot of people english dub sounds very weird, i dont try to sound rude or something just my opinion, have a good day sir.
About Light having a trauma for him to develop that personality: I am not aware or remember if there´s any canonic content which shows that. However, I´d like to point out that perhaps Light´s vision is the very encarnation of "I was born this way". Not as a justification for the atrocities he´s committed, but a deterministic view for his behaviour. All the things he´s seen about crimes and unfairness in the world surely has had an impact on him, but you don´t see the rest of us trying to wipe out evil. Some ideals and reasoning mechanisms are attached to our very "essence". Call it genetics, suggestion of oneself, disorders, internalized repulse to change, but at the end of the day you are just who you are. Whether they have control or not over it, for the person who is being "themself", it will feel like free will.
THERE'S NO WAY YOU START DEATH NOTE OMG I'M SO EXCITED. Deathnote, Attack on Titan and Code geass are 3 amazing anime. After you finish another show, I'd recommend watching "Code geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion"
@@DetractosPwns what plot holes? I specifically wrote in my notes app all the plot lines happening because i thought there was no way it could all be explained but by the end almost every plot line i noted was explained and finished except for a minor few
What I love about Light's character is that there's nothing traumatizing in his childhood that caused him to become like this. Many believed that psychopaths and sociopaths all had traumas like they were abused as a child or something, when in reality it's also possible for someone to be born a psychopath, or turn into a sociopath with no traumatic backstory.
Sociopaths are more likely to be affected by childhoods. Psychopaths just have it in them since birth and it takes something within them to be activated like a trigger or a direction, lights direction and trigger was the death note.
His father was an idealistic person too, maybe he got that part from him. He was extraordinary in literally every aspect. Due to being the perfect child, he never had any close friends to whom he could share his feelings to. That resulted in him not developing his emotional side. Hence the emotional numbness while killing people with the death note.
For what it's worth -- Light's formative years are not explored. Were there trauma or neglect, enough time has passed that outsiders to the family are none the wiser.
This anime is considered the most famous anime ever, according to global ratings, and it is considered one of the pillars of the anime world. Enjoy watching
I first watched Death Note as the Second Season was coming out on a weekly basis, thus the subtitles were often different. For this episode, at 18:28 the line was written as "Then you'd be the only bastard left in the world...", an interesting variant.
Man. That bit about catching it on the TV as a child with your siblings really brought me back. I had a lot of really traumatic experiences as a child back when the show was still coming out that ended up impacting how I engaged _(and still continue to)_ with a lot of pieces of media. But I strangely remember this show being a fond memory from that time anyways. Something I'd always peep in on while no one was looking whenever someone put it on. It was probably the first anime I can distinctly remember growing up. It's strange- you'd think with the amount of darkness and adult themes I shouldn't have been able to engage with it in the ways that I did, but I had no trouble getting into it at all. In retrospect someone prolly shouldn't have let me watch it tbh, but even still, there's this strange sort of fondness for the series I could only really have gotten from being a kid in the 2000s. It really wasn't my favorite time in my life, and I'd like to think I'm a lot happier now, but even still it's a nice memory. Thanks for bringing it back a bit.
@@GIRUUUR It is an amazing journey but depends on the style of anime you enjoy. It is grounded in realism and not the most action heavy series, but very interesting caracters and intriguing interconnected storyplots

Thank you for mentioning Erased. I want them to see your comment. And thank you for not mentioning the show called Powerful fashionable pretty bois... I mean jujutsu kaisen
@@enicot I was on the verge of mentioning bleach, but I remembered that it has some identity to its characters, a clearly good atmosphere, musics and truly entertaining combats and other stuffs. I feel like jujutsu is indirectly very much linked to today's narcissistic behaviors in girls and boys. It nourish it a lot. There is no real substance to it to defend it (even code Geass is still brilliant in what it suggests). Don't get me wrong, in jujutsu animation is wow but... Its all for me. It's like a show made only to impress and it yells a lot "are you impressed hein???" "isn't it so cool???" and yet people adore this because hey... Why not. Very well drawn pretty bois out of this world and very good animation. (but without a sense of struggle, as in bleach. Its not conveyed well to make me forget the superficial and narcissistic purpose of this show. Although it wants us to believe that its purpose is not that)
I LITERALLY IMMEDIATELY GASPED READING THE TITLE OMGOMGOMG Especially now that you're finishing aot which is how i find your channel in the first place, I'll have something to watch u guys react to till part 2, awesome
The dub is good enough for this anime that if you struggle reading subtitles especially since english isn't your first language, I'd recommend the dub. and this is coming from someone who is usually a sub snob.
As for the Hell talk, I believe what you may have been thinking of is that Jewish people don’t believe in a Hell. However, Christians and Muslims both believe in Hell as a real place souls can go as they die. If anybody is Jewish or Muslim and I’m getting something totally wrong, please forgive me, I’m also an atheist
Most people that recommend dub is because they watched it that way as kids (like me and Dragon Ball Z) or they find it difficult reading the subs and watching, but mostly I just watch sub, the passion in the original voices is hard to replace.
The Japanese voices are just perfect , they were in fact chosen to be the ORIGINAL voices. People are just lazy. Luckily the girls are not, sure everybody has problems linking subtitles to the actual pictures but certain people wanna make it seem like hearing that instead of reading would help a lot, which is 100% not true and just an excuse.
Damn, I also watched Death Note when I was around 11. I rewatched it over the years multiple times, and it's interesting how I found my sentiments change towards different characters as I grew older and experienced more of life. I was very supportive of Light for a long time. It seriously took me until I rewatched it in college to realize he's just a sick psycopath. Needless to say, my view of the world as a kid was very black and white.
It's also important to note that he's terrible from the start. A lot of people support the idea that he was well intentioned and got corrupted over time, but he kills over a scratch on his ego right from the start.
yea that's kind of the theme in the anime. Light has a very childish view of the world. I realized he was insane even as a child but I had to grow up really fast so I was practically an adult even then.
@mandak kart well I don't know about that, that certainly wasn't the appeal for me. I was never rooting for light so him being a psychopath was never the appeal. If we followed L instead then I'd be just as interested, in fact I probably saw L as the protagonist after a while anyway.
About Dub/Sub: I wouldn't necessarily say this show is better in Dub (because there was nothing wrong with sub), but it's one of the few anime for which I really think it doesn't matter one way or the other; The sub is good, the dub is good.
I feel like there are a lot of people who prefer sub because "it's the way the creator intended", but I don't agree with the logic. The creator wrote the show to be watched in the viewer's native language. In that sense, dub is closer to the creator's intent.
I haven't been this excited for a new react series in a long time!!! Cant wait to see you guys experience this series! If you're considering other anime too - I think Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is right up your alley! Characters and world building like crazy!
The fact that the main character's name is "Light" is a consideration of the author. The name "Light" is written in Japanese characters as "月(moon)," which is not how it is read in Japan. Since the theme of the story is deeply related to death, the author dared to give a name that does not exist in Japan so that children with the same name would not be bullied. (I write English in translation. I'm sorry if there are any strange parts.)
This is a supplement. [月] ← When written in Japanese characters In English, it means "moon". The Japanese reading is "Tsuki". In Japan, "月" is not read as "light".
Dam death note was one of my first anime, although it has its issues in the later half, it’s still a classic and really got me into the medium. Can’t wait to see the reactions for certain eps and moments (‘why are you looking at your watch?’, the helicopter scene…)
One of Japanese writing system, Kanji has multiple way to read. 斉藤, 斎藤, 齋藤, 齊藤, we read all of them Saito. When Light hear Shibuimaru Takuo’s name, he doesn’t know how to read them. So he write as many names as he can write. And one of them was correct, and he died.
This is propably the most respected dub for an anime show.I still prefer the sub for obvious reasons. But this would be one of the few shows I wouldn't mind seeing their dubbed versions. Ill list some more to help my memory. Fmab , Code geass , naruto.
I never really imagined that you guys became my favorite video reaction channel. They have done a great job with AOT and now with Death Note they leave me speechless! Cheers
OMG this is so exciting! Finally another show to rewatch with you other than just BCS! You guys are gonna love this, looking forward to some epic reactions.
Honestly, like Lola said, I would have liked it more if the anime had been a little slower in the beginning. So you have relatively quickly the Evil Guy as a protagonist. So a less rapid character development would have been more interesting. I think Tsugumi Ōba thought the same thing in retrospect, and that's why he worked it up with a later arc.
His transition a little less abrupt in the manga. I read the first few chapters and he is more hesitant and says that he lost sleep and weight to Ryuk when he shows up and has an even greater reaction to the Death Note after killing the two people and calls it evil. I've seen some people say that one of the reasons why he made the decision to continue using the Death Note in the manga was a way of coping with the fact that he had murdered two people which clashed against the high image of himself that he had and so he justifies it to himself that it was actually the right thing to do. His inner monologue then also seems more like he's trying to convince himself that its the right thing to do. Still was pretty quick in the manga but a little less abrupt.
I'm fine with how they did it in the anime, it's not really the point of the show. Also, there are a lot of people in the world that agree with Light's ideals (to some extent), so for me and a lot of people the fact that Light was a psycho that feels like all criminals should die from the get-go wasn't that surprising. I've heard that more Japanese people find themselves agreeing more than others with some of Light's actions because the death penalty is preferred there.
@@aokiji5888 Dude I live in Latin america . Where every criminal and killer is free the next day after killing and robbing . Why on earth some idiot would not do what light is doing ? it's like you are letting innocent people die
See, I actually love how quickly his character turns dark in this. It was one of the most refreshing parts of the show for me, because when I heard the premise and started watching episode 1, I was like ok this is cool but it's obvious where this is going. He's gonna eventually start to go crazy with power and become evil (or reveal his evil side). Again, this is a cool enough premise in itself, but we've all seen that character arc a million times before. So realizing that everything I thought the show would cover was covered in the first episode was incredibly exhilarating, because then I had no clue where this would go.
it's clear they said this because they thought Light is the character they will be following, he technically is but we all know he's not the character they will be following after this. They'll be fine after the next episode
I'm surprised they're doing another anime! Though I was thinking it'd be nice if they could could watch Haikyu, everytime they were saying 'Libero.' 😂 I'd highly recommend it to them, as Haikyu has great character development, growth and wisdom. Anyways, it'd be cool to reexperience Death Note with LM.
Loved your ATLA Reaction (This is how I found the channel). Havent checked it for a while, now seeing you two are watching death note. Let this journy begin
Great reaction to the first reaction of this masterpiece released in 2006, it is still the most popular anime of all time, at least from what MAL (MyAnimeList, the IMDB of manga and anime) says. Many people are surprised by the extensive list of people that Light has killed in the first 5 days of having the Death Note in his possession, but many people ignore the following data: the first reaction of Light when receiving Ryuk's visit: He thought that sooner or later the true owner of the Death Note would come to retrieve it and punish him for having used it. That's why he thought that Ryuk was going to kill him or take his soul away. Therefore, he believed that he had little time to waste trying to purify the world, eliminating as many criminals as possible in the shortest amount of time. By the way, great catch when Light writes the biker's name on the Death Note. In Japanese, many times you don't know how to spell someone else's name until that same person writes it for you. This is because the Japanese language is written in kanji (they are a set of logographic characters from Chinese script which forms the main part of the Japanese writing system, alongside with other Japanese syllabic scripts called hiragana and katakana), which can have different pronunciations depending on the context. For this reason, Light has to write all the existing possibilities for the Death Note to act on the biker, knowing how his name is pronounced. For example, Light himself is written "月" which means "moon". Also, there is a peculiarity in the Japanese language: there is no L sound in it. That's why Light is pronounced "Raito" in the original version. I can't wait to watch your next reactions to Death Note and Attack on Titan.
Watching Death Note in English Dub is totally acceptable here btw! The English dub is actually really good here and I doubt many people disagree with me here. If it makes the show easier to follow, I strongly recommend doing that (especially because this show is going to get confusing) :)
thank you so much for doing the sub version instead of dub don't care what anybody says... the sub version is way better and has way more passion 95% of the time
I am super excited to see new people discovering this show! Really looking forward to seeing what you think of it. You pre show discussion did bring up a topic that I feel very strongly about: Reactors should watch shows in the best way for them, not necessarily the best way to watch the show in general. EDIT: This was written before watching any of the actual reaction. I have now watched several episodes in. You both seem to be catching everything, so the following is not necessarily a push to have you watch dub, just a statement that you should watch however you want, and (Mostly) ignore the comments about watching it wrong. While I fully recognize and respect that subs are generally superior for watching anime, there are a couple exceptions, and reasons to watch the dubs. First: you have a hard time keeping up with the subs (e.g. you are a slow reader, have an easier time understanding spoken english, or want to look away from the screen on occasion), second: you are reacting and are focusing on a couple of things at once. For reactors, I always advocate for them watching in the way that they can get the most out of the show. Whether this means watching dubs over subs, binging to avoid spoilers, or stretching a series out to have time to digest the twist and turns, or whatever, watch things in the way that you can enjoy them the most. Luckily for the sub/dub debate there are several shows that are great to react to that have PHENOMENAL English dubs, such as Deathnote, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, and My Hero Academia. Whichever way you continue to watch is up to you, so enjoy the wonderful ride that is Deathnote!
11:50 "Did he write it multiple times? His name?"

@@CrazeeAdam psychopaths can easy mix in with normal humans which is light's nature, sociopaths are people who don't mix in well with normal humans which is L's nature.
@Raneem Aly - I mean, it´s not exactly a well kept secret... The show is LITERALLY telling you that he is a psychopath xDxD
PS you didn't miss a part, Ryuk had already said his name. In Japan a shinigami or god of death is a common myth similar to the Grim Reaper. So when he realized the notebook was real he assumed it could belong to some supernatural entity like that.
exactly. gives some context to the next episodes, as LM will realize that light is basically a genius and that it's very unlikely that anyone may compete with his deductions, until...
Also, I love Ryuk so much. He's just in it to have a good time, and he immediately calls Light out on his bullshit, even as he's enjoying it.

Death Note is another show (just like AOT) where I just know that with time, you guys will put out 1h+ videos because there will be just so much to discuss and I‘m looking forward hearing your opinions and theories. This is going to be a great journey!
Honestly, as much as I prefer to watch subbed versions of things, the dubbed version of this is actually quite excellent. If subs are hard, don't worry about switching to the dubbed version.
Yeah but Ryuk dub is better than the sub to be honest
The English version of this show is excellent. I think they're gonna miss things because sometimes there's a lot of writing and very little time to read it, and see what's on screen. This is such an excellent show, it would be a shame to watch the whole thing and miss it.
I dont think so, im not english native so english dub is not a emotional thing for me, thats happen a lot because you probably see this in english when you are young, but for me and a lot of people english dub sounds very weird, i dont try to sound rude or something just my opinion, have a good day sir.

As someone who loves Death note, I’m so happy that you’re reacting to it
About Light having a trauma for him to develop that personality: I am not aware or remember if there´s any canonic content which shows that.
Atrocities like saving millions of innocent people by getting rid of bad people?
@@kaibaboy3374 it's the nuance of it dude

THERE'S NO WAY YOU START DEATH NOTE OMG I'M SO EXCITED. Deathnote, Attack on Titan and Code geass are 3 amazing anime. After you finish another show, I'd recommend watching "Code geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion"

@@DetractosPwns what plot holes? I specifically wrote in my notes app all the plot lines happening because i thought there was no way it could all be explained but by the end almost every plot line i noted was explained and finished except for a minor few
@@DetractosPwns I smell a very bad taste in anime
What I love about Light's character is that there's nothing traumatizing in his childhood that caused him to become like this. Many believed that psychopaths and sociopaths all had traumas like they were abused as a child or something, when in reality it's also possible for someone to be born a psychopath, or turn into a sociopath with no traumatic backstory.
Sociopaths are more likely to be affected by childhoods. Psychopaths just have it in them since birth and it takes something within them to be activated like a trigger or a direction, lights direction and trigger was the death note.
Light is a Legend! RIP Kira
I think his upbringing/background contributed to his god complex so him having a tragic background wasn't really necesarry and it works as it is.
This anime is considered the most famous anime ever, according to global ratings, and it is considered one of the pillars of the anime world.

the way i GASPED when i saw another anime!! we got them boys and girls, i'm so excited for this one!!!
I think Light also kind of gets corrupted but the power the death note gives him.

There is no real substance to it to defend it (even code Geass is still brilliant in what it suggests). Don't get me wrong, in jujutsu animation is wow but... Its all for me. I'm so happy you guys choose sub!!!!!! I like dubbed, but the japanese version is just special. Miyamo Mamoru as Light is amazing
Most people that recommend dub is because they watched it that way as kids (like me and Dragon Ball Z) or they find it difficult reading the subs and watching, but mostly I just watch sub, the passion in the original voices is hard to replace.
True, but honestly L and Ryuk’s voice are way better in the dub than in The subbed. Light’s voice is better in sub though

The musical memory is amazing
Lola I envy you, I also saw this in my childhood and I remember everything D:
You are about to experience one of the most thrilling stories ever made, not just in anime, but in general.
[月] ← When written in Japanese characters
In English, it means "moon".
The Japanese reading is "Tsuki".
In Japan, "月" is not read as "light".
This was unexpected but excited to see their reaction to this

11:37 Lola: "Write Faster~" 😂 😂 😂

Death note is one of the few animes having a decent eng dub. You guys would probably prefer that. At least I did
"This child is kinda killing people.. So I guess he's more advanced than we are" 🤣🤣 You said it.. 💯

Yess I’m so excited to see your reactions to this!! Such a well written show 😊
I am super excited to see new people discovering this show!
