Who else is appreciating this streak of vintage ufc fights ?
As long as Dan Severn Isn’t on them it’s all good. I appreciate Dan’s skills but it’s not entertaining
Way more entertaining than new ufc
I would appreciate them even more if the thumbnail of the video didn't show me who won before I've even watched it. 😅
It brings back memories of a simpler time in life.

Got to see Ken speak a couple weekends ago. The dude stood there and shook the hands and signed autographs for people from a line all the way to the door for 3x that weekend. Every single person. A good dude. After seeing this fight i am reminded and amazed at how great of a fighter he was on the ground. Dang! My son hasnt stopped talking about shaking kens hand from that event and has been watching his fights on RUclips almost every day. Ha ha! Thanks Ken for being a good dude!

Apparently god chose Ken 🤣

Ken was a beast in his prime! Hated to see him lose like he did in his older years! True legend of the sport
I've been looking for Ken's actual weight for a while now. I'm SHOCKED that he's ONLY 215!!!!!!! He looks bigger than Kimo!
Dude, he never should of had to work & risk his legacy like that it's fucked up. Created the lions den, MMA's first ever "team". Pancrase, wrestling, ufc, he's done it all & was excellent at all. True Pioneer.
I loved, that he still tried, despite losing again and again. That's true fighting spirit.

Ken Shamrock was going for Rolling Kneebars and Reverse Heel Hooks from the bottom 20 years before Danaher learn to spell those words. The guy is a legend. So much ahead of his time.
Richard HART his legs are fkng HUGE!
Ken has great skill
Yeah? And what was Ken's success rate for rolling kneebars? lol
The first submission in UFC history was a heel hook.
Inoki was doing leg locks before Ken Shamrock was born.
GIMME MOAR!
This equals ancient historic documentation.
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!!!
Fucken youngsters DON'T KNOW SHIT...
Don’t forget, Ken Shamrock “May throw punches”
Kimo, pt. 4: "May try to shoot"
They said that in the other match because he was fighting a pure wrestler and is also primarily a grappler
He didn't need to throw a single punch.
They said that because they'd been told to make the rules "no punches to the head" so you could only do open palm strikes "technically" but before the fights they would say "we're not gonna penalize you if you throw punches." It was just a thing they agreed to do so they could stay legal and on the air
Heated popcorn might pop
If you were on top during this era then you truly were greatness!
-No gloves
-15 min time limit (no rounds)
-Headbutts
-Facing people 55lb+ heavier
-Straight elbows
-Eye raking
-No drug tests lol
Man....that was just barbaric!
What do you mean by "eye raking"?It sounds like some form of eye gouging which has always been illegal in the UFC along with biting.
What? These guys were important for creating MMA but you can't say they are really great fighters

I came back to look at this video, and started thinking of how everyone had their own distinct style, like comic book heroes and villains. Royce Gracie was the skinny grappler, Ken Shamrock was the hollywood star, Pat Smith was the kickboxer, Gerard Gordeau was the dirty fighter, Kimo was the religious nut, Tank Abbott was the walking boulder, Dan Severn was the wrestler and so on.
I know that today's UFC fighters are better in every conceivable way, but it looks like they all fight the same. I miss those original days.

Trying man...lol...but I just don't have the recovery that I had 20 yrs ago...and...not sure I'll ever see the numbers I had on the Bench Press back in the 90's...yet my Curls and Overhead Press are nearly as strong as they were back then...and my legs are better than ever...it makes me wonder if certain muscles in the body degrade faster than others with age...😕
@@galaxyman2007dtl I hear you man. Recovery time is the big difference, and explosion. Strength is the last to go. Bench press is overrated anyway and may do more harm than good. Years of training it with imperfect form degrades the shoulder joints and tendons. Could be why your bench lifts aren't what they used to be. Dumbell presses and pushups are just as good.
@tokr72 I think you're right...looking back...I never worked my back much...as far as pulling movements...like rows and pull-downs...and I think it's why my shoulders have imbalances now. I trained fairly safely...but I remember bouncing a little...and bridging a lot...yup...I should have been smarter. I should have done more martial arts...maybe jujitsu and boxing. Karate classes back then were too cult-like...all that...'Yes, Sensei!' The push-ups for punishment if you arrived late...too much bullshit. Today it's a lot different. The training facilities for MMA are devoid of that culty...military-like atmosphere...which is a good thing.
You are 51 years young! Age is only a mindset
Just keep on keeping on man, keep working out and being healthy! Being 51 dosen't mean lifes over!

LOL
Drug testing wasn't required in the UFC at this time. That wouldn't happen for nearly another 20 years.

*Ken Shamrock has always underappreciated in WWE. WWE doesn't even mention his name at all. They only mention Brock Lesnar. Ken Shamrock is a pioneer from transiting from WWE to MMA* 💯

Shamrock went from mma to the wwf because it offered more money.
Dan Severn went to wwf too back in the day...I believe lolol
He was excellent with his ankle locks.
Ken went from MMA to WWE because of injuries and MMA being at a standstill for a while. Wrestling was full time, MMA was not. Financially better for him. While they did under appreciate him, you gotta keep in mind that NOW Ken is an legend but at that time, he was not as big of a household name as he is now.. and he only wrestled about a year or 2 in WWE and had some time gaps inbetween due to injuries and he got sent down for more training because he had injured several wrestlers.

Is it just me or was the production of UFC in the 90s just epic? They showed the different styles of the fighters and the feel was just so special with the super fights where the winner got a belt as trophy 🏆 even tho they couldn’t defend them haha.
Those 90s montages are gold
I love the sportsmanship. Hard to see that nowadays
I was 21 in 1996 and trust me these things were epic! Every UFC was a huge event because they went months before having another one. They were on Friday night. I remember me and my friends going to Little Caesar's to get a pizza for each of us watching this madness lol
@Dnomyar Akunawik Ken Shamrock practiced that leg lock probably 1000 times for every time a well-rounded grappler now practice it once. The things he did he would be far better at than some guy who has a bit of everything.
It is epic. It was fresh and no one in America had ever seen anything like that before.
All this Shamrock love lately. Old school period..Good job whoever uploading these.
You can't show early UFC without Shamrock & Gracie - they go together
I always thought he was a bad-ass and fun to watch fight. I never cared about him taking steroids or having a weird attitude, he was what he was.
Denver Donate ..I agree 100% exactly. And this was a time where like steroids was mandatory apparently lol. Everyone was on shit back then everywhere
Dan Severn was one of the few early UFC fighters who never touched PEDs/steroids.
For the people who have only seen Ken Shamrock ☘️ fight in his later years. This is a prime example of how good he truly was/is.
I remember tripping out when I found out he was more than a WWF wrestler. Just stoked to see him fight for real and non scripted

Between this, the win over Severn, and draws with Gracie and Taktarov (both fights he very likely would have won a decision), this was Shamrock's apex. He was the best fighter in the world at this point, and you could see a complete fighter in him, the model for what others would form into "complete" MMA fighters.

I don't think Shamrock ever got to feel like he could let his guard down to the critics. He dwelled so much on the opinions of the one or two people left that doubted him, that I'm guessing he never really stopped to recognize just how great he was. Him and Royce Gracie were simply the best 2 fighters of the early ufc years.
Dan Severn harping “position, position, position”…. That’s the world class wrestler in him speaking. All his training and experience: “dominant position means your back is not on the mat.” The BJJ/Submission guys emphasized the finish. Whether that finish came from on top or the bottom did not matter to them. Great example of this was when his “brother” Frank took on GM Winner Kevin Jackson. Everyone told Frank “You are crazy that Man is going to get a single/double, put you down, and grind you to a pulp. Well Mr. Jackson…. let me introduce you to an arm bar from the transition to the guard.

Grew up with Ken in Northern California... he really is the nicest guy in the world. Wish he was a spring chicken and still fighting, I miss that a lot.
Well he is 55 years old now but still looks pretty much the same. Guy's an animal!
Nevada Dan wow! was he a brawler when he was young or none ad a fighter as a kid.
Two stories:
1. I officiated men’s slow pitch tournaments when I was in college. Both teams started arguing from the dugouts. Ken came out and wanted to fight the ENTIRE TEAM by himself, they all declined.
2. Had a super small bachelor part in Reno. Three brothers, Ken and I. He got into a fight that night with 2 football players. One was with the Seattle Seahawks and the other was with the University of Oregon. Knocked both of their asses out in an alley
Nevada Dan great story Dan cool as hell and I thought I was a tuff guy.
His last name is Nance. Ken was troubled as a youth. He was in a boys home for several years and was adopted by Bob Shamrock, the owner of a boys home. Ken broke his neck in HS and was in a halo for several months. As soon as it came off, he was a fighting and wrestling animal once again!!!
I never realized Ken Shamrock was this good.
I'm reading Shamrock's book, right now, and he actually became much more technical after losing against Royce Gracie early in his career. He was determined to learn more ground techniques and it shows here.
ken was the man before all the injuries. he went to wwe and it destroyed his knees and his back. when he made his return to the ufc against tito he was a shell of himself. knees and back were fucked, which prevented him from grappling like this. so he resorted to stand up which he wasnt very good at.

Gotta love the 90's.. The sportmaship was awesome, and the trash talk was only something like "Kimo, be ready!" lol
At 9:03 Ken shifted his hips with perfect timing as Kimo was punching and made Kimo miss while getting at a good angle and the right time for the knee bar, very advanced leg lock back then, very nice I'm gonna try this when I spar on bottom open guard.
That timing was impeccable, Ken’s fight IQ really shines here. Kimo didn’t have much technique but he was a real threat and dismantled Royce.
Shamrock really was a legend.
Ken was the leg lock specialist, solid ankle lock👏!
Back when UFC was real fighting
Before they changed the rules to FAKE mode.
@@receptieletoile7595 I think what OP means is back in early UFC days it was different fighting disciplines vs eachother whereas now everyone trains in MMA.
KIMO was such an awesome personality and character in the UFC early days! #GoWithChrist
Yep, back then fighters actually had personalities lol. These days they are all the same -same personality and style
Great to watch the different strengths all the fighters had in those days, from different backgrounds, and seeing their moves work for them, either strikers or grappler.

Battle of the steroids...Big john Mccarthy the real MVP
BarePills wasnt illegal, dont see problems, plain ground
They can barely wrap their arms around the other! Jacked City! Pop. 3, that's Mayor Big John McCarthy!
I’m sensing the picograms in action
Yea but Ken had submission/grappling skills. Later on especially in his pride days. He had developed pretty good striking to compliment his ground game. It wasn't just steroids that helped him win it helped sure.
even John Mcc is on steroids lol
There really is something about these older matches. Everything is saw raw. I never saw any of these live, but I was lucky that the video store down the road always had the newest releases on VHS. My brother and I were really into it.
Oh, those good ol' times when steroids were mandatory...
and todays is different?
@@kwazarx3634 Yes, with USADA it's very different. Just look at the physiques.
usada =)
physiques means nothing, and there were no weigh categories.
@@kwazarx3634Even when there were weight categories, before USADA, people had the "superhero build". After USADA, even Overeem's diet of "horse meat" couldn't keep him looking jacked...
Every single fighter who had that superhero build lost it the moment USADA got involved. I'm sure there's a few people still sneaking in performance enhancers, but it's MASSIVELY reduced, if not mostly gone.
@@wrybread mma evolved from super hero wresling lvl to very high lvl pro fighters. Too big muscle mass in more problematic than usefull in octagon nowadays (oxygen and condition). Big mass helps only in a short ring and only on max 3min rounds, thats why AliStairoid Notredeem was strong on K1 rules, but still Badr Hari2/Remy Bojasky >>>
Most important thing in mma nowadays is condition and shape because most fighter fighting on near the same lvl and they use steroids but modern and different type.
"by God he just punched the ground!"

🤣
wasnt it Jim Ross that says that?
SEG era UFC was amazing! Everything was so new.
Man you guys got me watching all of these old school fights 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!!
What I love about these old fights is that when the bell rang, it was just a fight, no rounds. It wasn't the refs job to stand you up, you had to get out of it. Some say it was boring, but nobody would save you from a bad position.
Jesus, Ken was such an instinctual beast on the ground, pure flow
