I recently bought a house in Salisbury MD and I’m having that fart water problem, Sharp water company come every month to replace the big tanks filters in my garage and the bad smell goes away for the first week but then comes back !
Sounds like they aren't using the right filters. Need a taste and smell filter rather than just a sediment filter. You should bring it up next time they come around. Hopefully they can straighten it out for you!
Take the zink rod out of the water heater and problem solved, when zink and sulfur are combined and heated it creates the gas that smells like rotten eggs
That can occasionally cause a smell but is not always the case. Especially if you have the issue with the cold water as well. Plus, we have a tankless water heater so no zinc rod. Thanks for watching!
I wish you would have told us you checked the cold and hot water for smell. I live in a city that has 5 wells and we have been here for over 30 years so I have experience with our water. For the past 6 years I have been using a Magnesium Sacrificial Anode with no problems. My cold water does not smell only the hot. So my guess is the water supply has changed and is affecting the Magnesium Anode causing the smell. I don't like Aluminum Anode Rods because Aluminum is toxic to our bodies but it does not react to Hydrogen Sulfide. So if your Cold and Hot water smell I agree with your Carbon Filter (Thanks for the tip). But if only your hot water smells it could be a Anode Rod made of Magnesium or a mixture of Aluminum & Magnesium.
My smell is in both hot and cold as it is an issue with the source of the water which is common in my area. Often times hot water tanks do require an anode or they start to stink. I have a tankless water heater though which I would highly recommend and will probably do a video on at some point. The carbon filter is the best choice around here. Thanks for watching!
That'll definitely mess with it! Glad I could help. Enjoy that nice smelling water! Also helps to clean out the filter screens at the sinks since sometimes they get junk caught in them that retains the aroma. 👍

Specifically when in using hot hot hot water not cold just steaming hot I think it's build up . Bathroom sink hasn't been like this for 19 years until now build up?
That's probably in your hot water heater. Have you ever flushed it? Sediment builds up in the bottom of those. Give it a good flush and it'll most likely clear up. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
That smell is caused by the anode rod in your hot water heater. You can remove the rod, labor intensive sometimes, or treat the water heater with hydrogen peroxide.
That only applies to systems with a tank hot water heater. We have a tankless. Also that would only affect the hot water, not all water. It is an issue for some people, but not in this situation. Thanks for watching!
I add hydrogen peroxide to my filter housing to help sanitize my pipes. Just be sure to by pass your water softener to fill your pipes and water heater with hydrogen peroxide mix. Let sit over night.
We use a tankless water heater so don't get the stink that comes with a tank unit. Ours is due to the quality of the ground water in our area and luckily the filter does great for us. Thanks for watching!

Great Video! I am contemplating buying the hardware recommended in your description. However, I was just about to press the “buy” button and a question came to mind. The cartridge and filter configurations in the video look different from what you are recommending in the links. That’s not a problem but just curious what’s the pressure drop rating of the filter you are using in the video? The filter you recommended from Amazon is rated to 3 GPM. The average residential household water flow rate is 6-12 GPM at the source.
I'm not sure what happened to the original link. I checked it and fixed it. Those cheesy plastic ones are no good. The carbon ones are what you need for taste and odor. That's what I use and they are rated for 6 GPM which is more than enough for us. Thanks for watching!
We live in an apartment how would we address this issue. We have been told by the lady landlord that because they only have 1 maintenance man for over 200 Apts, so unless the apt is on fire or flooding they won't be able to help us.
It would depend on how the water is routed in the building. I doubt there's a main line accessable in your apartment to put a filter on. I would suggest individual sink units for maybe the bathroom and kitchen. Hope ya get it sorted out!
I'm gone learn ya lol That crawl space isnt far off a basement.. clearly you havent seen a crawl space in Australia.. I would be stoked to have a "crawl space" that big!
What do I do about stagnant water that’s been left in the water heater for months I’ve drained it the water doesn’t smell nearly as bad but I was thinking of running a couple of bottles of peroxide and letting it sit the the tank for a while then draining it
Im pretty sure the rotten egg smell is never fixed by installing a carbon filter, normally a oxygenated filter system or a electric anode on the hot water tank fixes the problem, also chorine and ozone have been used. Also the filter in the crawl space is a point of use filter not a whole house filter. Are you a water treatment certified.
What anode rod? I don't have one of those. Nope I'm sure not water treatment certified but I can attest that the filter does indeed remove sediment and smell/taste quite well and works for the whole house. Way cheaper than over priced, prone to problems garage "professionals" try to sell you.
Great video! I have fart water and high iron I am assuming by the orange staining in sinks and toilet bowl, will this same filter work for that? Also I have an outdoor well. Do you think this would hold up outside in the elements in Florida or should I create a small pump house?
The staining may actually be sulfur in the water which is what causes the smell. It leaves a rust like color if it's present in heavy enough concentrations. Plastic doesn't generally hold up well to sunlight so at least shielding if from that would be advised. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
We have an in-line sediment filter (String wound) on our line which does a great job with the sentiment catchment but we want to be able to filter the (fart smell) out and have tried a carbon filter in place of the string wound and water pressure dropped after about two days to about 10-psi -- suggestions?
I'd suggest a second filter housing downstream of the sediment filter for a carbon filter. The carbon filter will take out the smell and taste without getting plugged up as the sediment has already been removed. Hope it helps. Thanks for watching!
I live in FL and every Water place tries to sell you $2000 for this and $1500 for that!! So where can I get that simple filter set up you have?? Thank you for the great video....
Yeah those places are in business to sell you a super expensive whole house filter system with reverse osmosis and water softener and all that. If you go to the video description there is a link to the filter on Amazon. That should help you out. Thanks for watching!
We used to use these filters at out old house, and I always had the same problem unscrewing the cover like you did. I just wonder if their isn't something you could put on them plastic threads so it wouldn't get stuck on there every time you went to change the filter. I know it would have to be somethin that wouldn't pollute your water or anything like that. And you'd have to make sure it didn't damage the plastic or the rubber seal. Maybe some bacon grease or honey or somethin.
Not a bad idea. I think it's mostly the rubber gasket against the plastic that binds up. A touch of basin grease would probably do the trick. Thanks for watching!
There really isn't too much you can do unless you can get the landlord to install a filter. For drinking you can get a pitcher that filters water and you keep in the fridge. Hope you get it worked out!
Where should you install the filter system? I haven't gotten under the house yet to even see what I'm working with. Just moved here and dread turning on the water 😷
The well line comes into the house to a pressure tank. After the tank the main line leads into the household plumbing. Between the tank and first fixture is where you want the filter so everything is covered. Hope this helps!
So I️ just moved back in with my dad. We have stinky water and I️ dont know when the last time he checked anything. Aside from getting a filter and doing the softener, should I️ be prepared to find out pipes/lines to be corroded?
It's probably the hot water tank. Is it far more prevalent when running mostly hot water? They tend to build up sediment and be quite stinky. Most water lines are copper or cpvc so corrosion shouldn't be a major factor. Thanks for watching!
Not a bit. Most fixtures these days don't flow much anyway. Shower head for example is like 1.3 gpm. I've got the expansion tank set to kick the pump on at 40 psi and off at 60. Works great. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video you got another subscriber. I just bought a house with a well on it, today turned on the water for the first time and fart smell. Question for you, this well water system in my basement has a water softener system on it. Do you think this filter should go on after the softener or before straight up from the well? Thanks for the info.
I don't personally like the taste of water after going through a softner system so I would put it after. Realistically is doesn't matter if it's right before or right after though. It'll still get rid of fart water. Thanks for watching! Appreciate the support.
I think it’s safe to say that if it doesn’t matter if it’s right before or right after the softener, then it would make sense to install it downstream of the softener to increase the life of the filter. The softener removes quite a lot of the sediment.

@@MyLegacyGarage Thanks for the information. I'll flush out the water heater but that'll have to be in a couple months. I'm currently up in North pole Alaska and draining it to outside isn't exactly a good idea right now. Otherwise it'll be a bucket job.
@@Rambw249 - I have run a hose from the bottom of the hot water tank to the kitchen sink and run the water for about 15 minutes. The secondary advantage of the kitchen sink is it helps clean up the grease that sticks to the inside of the pipe that washing dishes doesn’t remove. Do you have septic or sewer or are you using the honey bucket? I did a couple years in Barrow, 6 months in Fairbanks and 9 months between Homer and Anchorage but only spent a couple hours in North Pole.
If I had a tank you might be correct. That would only be an issue with hot water use, not cold as well which is our issue. Plus, we have a tankless water heater so your assessment, with all do respect, is wrong. Thanks for watching!
And I’ll add you don’t need a new anode rod. You need to take it out and put a brass plug in it’s place. You don’t need the rod in the heater. Dads been a plumber for 30+ years. Loose the rod if your hot water smells.
@@alvarorangel3509 if the hot water smells like sulfer/rotten eggs there is a rod in it. Some are harder to find because they put them under a black cap and then spray foam has to be cut out to find the top of the rod where you put a socket on to get it out.
@@MyLegacyGarage your not kidding I just moved in to a mobile home for rent that is on well water and every time I shower I feel like I’m going to be sick.
I have a shallow (12') i installed in an offgrid Florida property. I currently pump with a simple manual bilge pump. The water is clear but smells of sulfur. I only have 12v power on site. I have a custom10 gallon tank (4" sealed and pressurized PVC tube) I want to fill with a transfer pump. Because the tank will get very hot from the sun and will be pressurized to 20psi, do you think either of these might help with the sulfur smell?
I don't think anything other than purification tabs in the tank or a filter would help. If I was u I would look into RV water purification tablets or liquid. My sulfate is at 1200 mg/l. I'll likely need a whole house reverse osmosis machine. Or just live with it.
@@Epro95 around here if you want really good water you gotta go at least 400' feet deep. Some places I've heard of over 1000'. Check into it as it may be more economical in the long run. 👍
You don’t need a reverse osmosis system. That’s overkill for anything other than drinking or running a water jet system. You can get a whole house carbon filter. Will last most people a few years before it needs rebedded.

This did not help my well's sulphur dioxide smell.
That's no good. Might wanna get a pro out there to test the well and see what's going on. If it's just on your hot water it's your tank. Good luck!
@@MyLegacyGarage ok, I used a non carbonated filter...let me try yours here instead. Thanks
@@Star-vg7ix carbon filter is a must. With a low micron rating. I use a taste, smell and sediment filter. Seems to work great. Good luck!
Also we think the far water smell only comes from hot water, do you have any suggestions for us?
I would flush the hot water tank and replace the anode in it. That usually takes care of smells from the hot water. Hope it helps!
Where do you install it?
Depends on the system. Somewhere accessable.
How long does it take for the smell to disappear. I changed the filter and it still stinks.
I had to clean the filters out at each sink. There was some sediment in them. Also if you have a tank water heater you will wanna flush it out good.
@@MyLegacyGarage Thanks for the information. I'll flush out the water heater but that'll have to be in a couple months. I'm currently up in North pole Alaska and draining it to outside isn't exactly a good idea right now. Otherwise it'll be a bucket job.
@@Rambw249 better you than me up there. I don't like the cold. Especially the older I get. Lol. Hope it all works out for ya!
With all due respect that's not the problem you need a new Anode in your water tank!
Thank u...I figured what he tlkn bout wasn't accurate....smh
@@happyamerican3235i have an electric water heater that I bought from Home Depot, would I need to lose the rod as well? Or would it be different?
@@alvarorangel3509 if the hot water smells like sulfer/rotten eggs there is a rod in it. Some are harder to find because they put them under a black cap and then spray foam has to be cut out to find the top of the rod where you put a socket on to get it out.
just dont drink tap water
I suppose that's an option, but showering in fart water isn't a very appealing option either. 🤣
@@MyLegacyGarage your not kidding I just moved in to a mobile home for rent that is on well water and every time I shower I feel like I’m going to be sick.
@@brianwt1 amen! Getcha filter! U won't be sorry!
I have a shallow (12') i installed in an offgrid Florida property. I currently pump with a simple manual bilge pump. The water is clear but smells of sulfur. I'm not drinking the water, but have bathed and washed clothing with it. Its clear and does not irritated my skin or eyes in 6 months so I presume to be safe.
No houses around.
Might also check out an RV water pump as they can build and hold like 40psi in the lines and run on 12 volts. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@@MyLegacyGarage nice simple setup! you dont need anything prior to that for larger particles like sand? If Im rarely on the property I wonder if it would last 3 or even 5 years?
What is the name of the filter?
I just put some links in the video description. Thanks for watching!

"Fart water" This is all i needed to see to move on to a more professional or at least a serious video.
Never claimed to be a professional and a good sense of humor is essential to a happy life. Sorry you're such a kill joy. 👍
Grow up moron…. You should freaking listen to people like this because 9 times out of 10 they know what they’re doing. Your thought process and inexperience shows. You disgust me
You must be so much fun to hang out with.
