  • Alexander Volkanovski is currently the P4P #1 ranked fighter in the UFC after defeating Korean Zombie, Brian Ortega, and Max Holloway (again) and is arguably the GOAT featherweight. His last three fights were a masterclass in how to beat taller opponents on the feet.

    In this video, I analyze these fights and extract a set of principles to follow to help shorter fighters develop their style.
    These principles are:
    1) Be the controlling distance.
    2) Attack the closest target first (leg kicks).
    3) Understand your mechanical advantages.
    4) Be patient, feint often.
    5) When openings present themselves, attack ruthlessly.
    Do you think he has a chance against Islam Makhachev? Let me know in the comments.

    Amazing video. I especially appreciated you mentioning body mechanics as it is an aspect of sports that is rarely given mention.
    Volkanovski is such a weird fighter because on the surface everything he does seems so simple even when you understand his game. But once you really delve deep into him as a fighter (which you have done here) you see the true brilliance, mastery and I.Q. behind his game.

    Volk's so good in distance management that if he have more power he would be koeing everyone he fights. And Ortega made some great adjustments in their fight. That also led him to almost finishing Volk. The talent in Featherweight is just too much. That's why I believe he's pound for pound.

    Another tip of him controlling distance/range is he uses that lead hand a lot to figure out where he can throw from. All these fighters in the video are great it was hard to see him beat on the TKZ, Zombie got screwed serving that military service in his prime.

    What's interesting here is Volk has a giant reach despite being shorter than most of his opponents he has a longer reach than Max Holloway for example. Wonder how the biomechanics of two fighters with different heights but identical reaches would compare.

  • @mythicslash3734
    @mythicslash3734 Год назад +1

    Although I love the video. It's important to note that volk isn't the "shorter fighter" the way you think. He's got shorter legs and torso yes, but his arm lenght is actually quite large, longer than even Holloway who stood at 4 inches higher than him.
    This means that most of the shorter vs taller strategies don't apply to him because he doesn't have a reach "disadvantage" necessitating him to get in close to use a short limb "advantage".
    Still though all your points are 100% true and good to think about!!

    • @jumbo9386
      @jumbo9386 Год назад

      Actually has a similar torso length or longer than most fighters he's fighting. Short legs. Certainly his arms are not short though...but they're not as long as his reach suggests. Much of his wingspan is attributable to abnormally wide shoulders, which are arguably the greatest mechanical advantage that exists in MMA

    • @falty2580
      @falty2580 11 месяцев назад

      He doesnt have long arms if anything its average for his height but what he does have is an abnormally large shoulder and frame. Also when you have to face guys 4-5 inches taller you have to raise your arms up to touch their head which also decreases your reach.

    I think Volkanovski is jumping in the deep end going to 155lbs these days. *Especially starting with Makhachev. I believe the level of danger he faced at 145lbs has been rather weak, when compared to the talent at 155lbs. i.e. Oliveira/Gaethje/Chandler/Poirier etc vs. Ortega/Holloway/Zombie etc

  • @mainvillain8463
    @mainvillain8463 Год назад +1

    The reason why volk could outstrike the taller opponents bcoz he has such have reach advantage, with that long frame he could control distance very well, and implemented striking with a good measure. Sometimes taller doesn't mean you good in fighting, but it's really about arm and shoulder length

    • @ssootho
      @ssootho  Год назад +2

      If you think that's the only reason he outstrikes taller opponent's you're missing 99% of what makes him a champ.

      @@ssootho he do know his physical advantage, but the most evidence criteria on UFC fighters become a champs, is bcoz most pf them have higher reach advantages, just look at jon jones, izzy, perreira, usman, leon edward, volk and sterling
