That 3rd round HAS to go down as one of the greatest rounds in UFC history. Volk had to dig DEEP for that. So did Ortega to even survive. Absolutely a fight that blew all expectations out of the water. Knew it would be great. Had no idea it would end up as one of the most exciting fights I've ever seen. From the build up for months to the actual fight, this was a W all around for the MMA community. Good freakin job!

The fans were overlooking this fight in favour of the Diaz vs Lawler fight purely out of name recognition. I knew this fight was going to be good, but I had a gut feeling it would go down as an all-time classic, and it did! Much respect to Volk and Ortega.

At first, everyone was disappointed by the decision to put Volkanovski and Ortega on Ultimate Fighter. Turned out to be a pretty good decision in hindsight.
Volkanovski, like Usman, is finally earning the respect that should have been given to him a long fucking time ago. 99/100 fighters would have tapped for those submissions from Ortega. Volk just refused to quit man. He's such an animal.

Alex got my respect now for sure. But the problem is that most people thought he lost against Max in the rematch. Besides, Usman has been more dominant and hasn't had any close fights besides the Colby fight, which he won by a ko... Think most people hate for no reasons...

Volk is fighting way better competition. Usman got two free defenses against Masvidal the journeyman lol. Woodley got beat by everyone, including paul. Colby and Burns are kinda legit, idk about burns beating Maia and Woodley to get a shot at the belt… hmm dont know, and Colby beating Lawler to get the first fight with Usman and then Woodley on a losing streak to get a rematch. Ortega, Holloway, Mendes, and Aldo are way better wins.
Alexander is a tough dude man. I was shaking when Ortega choked him. I thought he will tap. But he is super tough man. He earned my respect even more today.

I always liked Volk. He was getting shit on after the 2nd Holloway fight. But imo he's done everything right. Sitting on top of one of the most stacked division now
He didn't deserve to get shit on; Holloway fans are just toxic AF. It was a close fight, and nobody was even disputing the two rounds that Max clearly won. Unfortunately this is UFC, and you don't win with just 2 rounds, you need to win at least 3. Two of the three judges assigned to the fight thought Volk won 3 rounds. That's the way the game's played.
I disagree on it being stacked division, what is next for volk, max holloway was being put against yair was never going happen with his track record and now try to set up ranked 8 giga. Max is sat at number 1 that's a whole of division just being waisted because they want to find that next contender. Max and volk have took out majority of top 10, It kinda reminds me of the flyweight days with DJ. The only way they can resolve this issue is bring fighters like Arnold Allen and giga, set them up with easier fights than holloway. Let holloway get a trilogy fight with volk.
I clowned on him a lot but this fight puts an end to all that. Volk may be small but the dude is insane. I didn't even care who won the belt the fight was that good

Holloway fans are kinda like stipe fans. I don’t know how it happens, since the two fighters are some of the classiest guys in the sport. Even after the ngannou fight there was an insane amount of hate towards francis, just like volk.

Probably the best cardio out of the entire roster right now. He wasn't breathing heavy by the 5th round after so much striking volume and surviving a couple of choke attempts.

The truth is Alex is not an average human being despite him humbly saying he is. His coaches talk about how he was slamming experienced heavyweights on their head his first day of training. In rugby he was a terminator as well against much larger opponents. Natural talent is real and his work ethic on top of that makes him a force.
And above all that, he is one of the shortest guys of the divisions, but he have the biggest arms, he is like a bad proportion drawing that a child made. His hands almost hit the ground when he walks
Yeah, it's so obvious he's genetically gifted. Not even many other fighters could have got out of those submissions attempts, or kept his pace. His accuracy, his distance control, he's just overall good

Volkanovski surviving that choke reminded me of Khabib surviving Poirier’s choke... *No clue how they did it, Heart of champion* 👏
The Gracie BJJ channel broke down how Khabib survived that choke. It's basically proper arm and leg positioning by Khabib to ease the pressure and allow him to escape.
That is not even the same...ortega and poirer are two entirely different ground artist and not to mention poirer gully wasn’t even tight enough to do anything.
Khabib had it easier, it wasn’t even a proper guillotine as Poriers legs were not wrapped around. Volkanowski just turned in through the choke. Moreover, Ortega is levels above Porier in BJJ.
Khabib escaped because DP was impatient and skipped steps. This was a full mounted.. far far far far far FAR more impressive.
I think the Dustin choke, khabib said he was playing with him waiting for Dustin to tire.

that third round was the best round out of any fight I've ever seen, Alex almost went unconscious from two different chokes and Brian could barely analyze where he is and what he's doing after the end of the round.
Feel for Ortega. Made all these improvements just to have a pretty similar title fight as he did the one vs Max.Kid has unquestionable heart
He did a lot better against Volk than Holloway though. Styles make fights, and this fight proved it.
he seems to have trouble with volume fighters that can put on a pace. He looked amazing against a top-level counter puncher korean zombie but he struggled against max and volk. I honestly think dude can beat yair too, he'll just have to wait for volk and max to move up/retire.

Yea like at round three when he was laying on the floor the coach just helped him up after 10 seconds and I’m pretty sure the rules are the fighter has to get up by themselves before 10 seconds otherwise the other fighter wins but idk I think those are the rules lol.

Incredible performance by Volk, the toughness to escape those submissions and continue to beat up Ortega with zero signs of slowing down was just amazing. He's on path way to becoming one of the best to ever do it.
