I had about almost 1000 rounds down the barrels. No issue except from one particular bullet brand. Changed the bullet brand and everything is working fine. I did chang the recoil spring to be the blue Canik recoil spring since purchase. The label of the spring package says “to be used with less than +p+ rounds”. So anyone should ammo less powerful than +p+ should change to this light spring.
Bought a new rival s 2 weeks ago and had numerous FTF and FTE issues. After a lot of reading, videos, trial and error, and $$ I found the solution for perfect functionality (so far). Hennings group newest magazine extension stops the over insertion and fixes the FTF. Buy a caliper for $35 and measure the OAL. These guns fail to extract (casing comes halfway out and extractor comes off) on ammo over 1.15" OAL. Measure 9mm ammo in stores like I did to find shorter rounds. I went with Remington 115gr which is around 1.12" OAL and will try their 124's and 147gr next. So long as they're under 1.15" with the newest Hennings extension in, it shoots flawlessly! Hope this helps others with similar issues. Also I hear polishing the feed ramp and chamber throat area helps.
That all sounds like good info and similar to my experience. I have always loaded my rounds on the short side because the other pistols I was using are CZs and the tend to have a short chamber. Stoked it’s running for you and thanks for sharing!
Shame it’s been having issues, although I’m kind of glad it didn’t make my polymer rival irrelevant. The polymer one is such a great flex gun, it’s my USPSA and home defense gun. Not a single failure. I even carry it sometimes if it’s jacket weather. It’s bone stock, the most I think I’ll ever add is a TLR-1 and an optic eventually
Over 15K rounds through my Rival Dark polymer. With brass backstrap and brass mag bases. My Rival is just over 2# I have moved up to Master with this gun.
I appreciate the video. I almost bought a Rival-S about a month ago. I went back and forth with the decision for a couple days because I kept hearing some negative things about it. I had actually already canceled an order for the Mete MC9 for the exact same reason. Anyway, I decided to get the regular Rival with Mecanik M01. Feel like I made the right decision. I do think they will work out the kinks with the Rival-S and the MC9 though.
Yes for sure. One thing with social media and mass access to information is we tend to highlight and promote things that go wrong. I’m sure that there are many people that have no real issues. We also tend to be somewhat uninformed about things like chamber depth and the effects of spring changes or magazine modifications. If we look around much there is going to be detractors or reports of issues with any platform in any industry. I would have no problem picking up a Rival S tomorrow and it remains one of the most shootable guns I own. I’m sure you will enjoy the the Rival and thanks for watching.
Word, Basically is the steel. Frame version awesome and going to improve on dominate performance of its predecessor or is it plagued with some issues that prevent it from reaching its potential. Maybe both is the answer. One of these days I’ll do a follow up on the Rival videos and try to do a better job with the graphics. Thanks for the input.
if you want to have easily readable text no matter what background, give the letters a dark outline and contrasting colour. b&w and b&yellow work well. Thx for the info and a possible fix. I only have time on the TP9 'elite combat' and really like it. Do you have feeding issues with and without the extension and have you tried different mag springs?
Thanks for the tip. I’m not having issues at this point but am aware of the issues. With the stock bases the magazine will hit the magwel or the frame of the gun and won’t let the magazine move up high enough in the gun to lock up the slide. I don’t think that the magazine spring pressure matters but it may if the rounds are pressed against the ejector. I have noticed that the amount of coils on the mag springs is different on some of the factory mags I’ve bought. Like 2 extra coils on some of the newer ones. The mag extensions I use have grams or rune springs and followers to allow for the maximum number of rounds 23/24 per magazine at 140mm length. Thanks for watching
Yeah I’m hip to it now. It’s one of those things that you figure out as you go. Several folks have mentioned it over the last year. The text is really not important to the video and was just something for fun.
I have had my Rival-S for approximately 5 months and competed in 10 USPSA matches with over 2000 rounds and never had an issue. I continue to hear about the magazine over insertion issue and have yet to experience it. I run my Rival-S completely stock with factory mags and Federal Syntech 150 grain ammunition. The gun has run flawlessly without issue. Any suggestions to avoid the above related issue would be much appreciated.
Sounds like you are good to go! I’m sure lots of folks are not having any issues and that’s for the good. I don’t think there is anything I’d do to avoid problems you are not having. Are you running mag extensions or plus 2 bases I ask because those appear to let the mag body move around more then the standard base plate. Thanks for watching and for the info on your experience.
Yeah they are around but everyone I know that has had to order it in. I see a few online sellers that have both the chrome and the Darkside in stock now.
Yeah that’s the idea. Last few matches I shot I signed up limited optics. Pretty much just for fun. I just took the thumb test off It’s a little too large and I ended up busting my knuckles on it during manipulations. It’s fun and something to try out I’m just not used to it. Maybe running the slide racker would help but I was finding it more of a distraction than a help. Thanks for watching man!
Im curious about these mags you said you made. I have friends locally that are going through it with the over insertion mags. One of them has resorted to the new henning base pads with the skirts.
@CTrain I bought some Arex mags made for ambi release and cut the mag catch slot to work in a Canik. This was last year when you could find Rivals but no mags. I will link a couple of shorts I did at the time. ruclips.net/user/shortsBTNIC_pPkvM ruclips.net/user/shortsgLkBDZDYJvs Maybe people know or maybe not but a crap load of guns share the same mag body. beretta 92, sig 226, PDP, Arex zer01, and crap load of lesser know guns and clones or copies of the 92s etc. I looked for something that was cheap made by Mecgar and available. found the Arex mags for a good price bought like 8 of them and milled out the mag catch. the only real difference is the Canik mags have a slight relief at the back right corner of the feed lip. that keeps the mag from smashing into the ejector. I figured I'd risk it and if I bent or broke the ejector then I'd know and I'd file that relief. It never seemed to make a difference and they worked good in the polymer Rival. When I understood that this was happening from time to time I just switched out all my extended mags so that to the Arex bodies. Hope that all makes sense.
I've got a few videos on my channel about the issues I'm having with my Rival-S. They need to do a recall. You should also do a review of the factor thumb rest/gas pedal since there's none on RUclips.
@stevemiles I just watched a couple of your canik videos. It’s pretty frustrating that the magazines are problematic. I initially had some issues right when I got mine that went away pretty quickly but now and then the slide would lock open on a mag while I was in a match. For now I’ve got a work around that I realize isn’t really a viable for most folks. For sure I’ll do a quickie on the gas petal. Thanks for watching!
You can get all the fancy stuff from canik USA there are links in the description. Here is another one. Thanks for watching. www.canikusa.com/parts-accessories?compatible_models=1229
No idea honestly. It’s not something I really try to do. Mostly people who shoot super fast are very quick on the trigger reset and I think that’s probably the main thing to work on if you want to shoot fast. I also don’t think that shooting faster then .2-.17 is really necessary or even desirable when it comes to making good hits. The only time it really has an advantage is super close targets like 3 yards or less. Past that you are probably not going to be able to take advantage of any extra speed. Thanks for watching.
Disaster. Nothing but problems...all magazine retention and placement issues. Don't buy one yet. Wait another year or so until CANIK fixes all the issues. Read the forums. I own a polymer frame Rival (7K round thru it). A great pistol. And, yes, I own a steel frame Rival. About 3-4K rounds thru it. Nothing but problems. Should still be in production and testing.
I haven’t. I know the TP9 has one but the rival/mete type I have not. I think the preferred technique is to use the off hand or do slingshot / over the top slide manipulations. I’m sure there is a market there is someone wanted to make one.
@ACxREAL I appreciate the reply! I tried switching my grip and have failed miserably. I'm sure with time I'd get better, it just doesn't feel natural at all
I’m sure I failed to make it in the editing after reviewing my video. I relieved the inside of the hostler slightly with a Dremel bit and a file. I do apologize for the lack of information about that. On a Normal holster it would have never made it. On the ghost I notched back roughly 3/8” where the holster has a raised area for the finger rest.

@gobucks3146 For me this is the best way to be consistent with a flat faced trigger that pivots and a round free spinning spool on the gauge probe. place the gauge on the bottom of the trigger guard and slowly pull strait back until it breaks. If this was a curved trigger I would place the gauge in the center of the curve. I assure you that the trigger is very light and while the results may be different if the gauge was placed 1/4" higher on the trigger shoe the overall pull weight as measured with the gauge would only be marginally heavier. This is not a scientific exercise. instead it is a demonstration of the trigger so you get a basic idea of what you can expect. Most of the time when I see people demonstrate the trigger gauge they pull quickly. while this will give results it isn't very consistent and may not be best. I encourage you to find one of these pistols in the wild and give the trigger some pulls then you can judge for yourself.
The gun or my lousy video editing? The gun absolutely works and I think they have made a few minor tweaks that have improved the gun overall. I hear far fewer issues in the later models.
