Both these guys were on there. Listen to him talk on the Pawn Stars video too. "From what I understand you have such and such in the box." This seller was either reading a script for the Pawn Stars episode or he's bullshitting about how long he's been collecting here. Obviously someone can look younger or older than they are but if this guy has been collecting MTG since high school in 1995 he's mid 40s. I graduate in 1995 and just turned 47.
Pawn Stars is a staged show. Everyone on the show is in on the act. Even the people who "bring something in" is a part of the show. Literally anyone can show up on a day of taping and be on the show. There is a line and if you dont have anything to show, the show producers will often provide something.
So many card are off center! Look at 3:23 at the Doppelganger and how far off center left to right it is. Its a 9.5 ?!?! The centering alone is more like an 8, even if the rest of the card is PERFECT, its not a 9.5.
Unfortunately CGC's card division has unofficially partnered with some of the larger dealers and collectors within the hobby and have given out gift grades in exchange for marketing opportunities. This is extremely important to them at the outset of their card grading operations because they have to establish themselves while PSA and BGS are already so entrenched within the MTG grading community. The Lotus they assigned a Pristine grade wasn't fairly graded either, they just did that to ensure they could issue a press release showing the record breaking card was in a CGC slab.
Does anyone know if he opened all of these cards from packs himself or if he purchased them individually on the secondary market? I am intrigued because in 1994 I was looking for alpha cards and I couldn't find them anywhere. I was only able to get starter decks of unlimited.
They said in the video around the 7 and a half minute mark, that most/many of these cards were previously graded by a competitor and they cracked the cases and re-graded them so they all match from the same grader. So the majority of this was someone elses collection at one point.
I dunno, look at 3:23, notice how off center left to right that Doppelganger is? How is that higher than a 9? Even if the rest of the card is PERFECT, thats horrible centering for a 9.5 And its alpha so its easy to see the centering from the tiny white corner triangles.
What I REALLY want to see is his ungraded "rejects". Guy probably has multiple raw alpha sets in varying conditions.
Wasn’t this the dude who got hosed on pawn stars?
Looks like it to me...

CGC has more consistent grading, unlike PSA. Much love CGC
