Crouching Tiger, Hidden Damsel - Film Festival Short Film - Fly Fishing's Finest!

No two fish eat a fly the same way, and no hatch is the same one day after the next. Take for example one of the most predictable hatches each year, the damselfly hatch. For years Gilbert Rowley and Nic Heslop had brushed off the fabled rumors of a high mountain lake home to oversized tiger trout and a prolific damsel hatch. Decades of fishing this hatch on dozens of other lakes had them believing they had experienced all this hatch has to offer. However, as is often the case in fly fishing, it turns out they were wrong, way wrong. But this time their incorrect assumptions didn’t bother them. Because you never know when a good hatch will turn to great, or even epic.

@@GilbertRowley yes sir. Sometimes fish ignore single try fly and concentrate only on clumps. we have to tie a 3 or 4 dry damsels on a big loop knot, cut down hooks at the bend except for the one in the middle. Non stop action.

Thanks man! It was a super fun project. I sat around filming bugs and fish far more than I fished which actually was super fun! And yeah when they get going on the damsels it can be wild!

It does feel wrong and uncomfortable when we make mistakes or things just don't go the way we want to out there, especially if you've convinced yourself that you're a great angler. Hey Gilbert! Just a heads up! I just watched this with a couple of my buddies and by the end of it they were talking all crazy and stuff. They said something about an - "extraordinary rendition"- and then mumbled something about - "water-boarding with cognac" - "until he spills the beans!" So if you see a couple of guy in waders with a crazy look in their eyes carrying a bottle of cognac - run the other way! Consider yourself warned! : ) Great job with this buddy. Awesome film. We all DREAM of an epic damselfly hatch like that and you not only found one - you filmed it so we could all enjoy it! Very cool!

Thanks man! Much of it was shot in the Sony FS5, including all the shots of fish jumping out and eating damsels. Other parts were shot with a Canon C70.

That’s a great question, actually they are an intergeneric hybrid of both. Salmo trutta x Salvelinus fontinalis
