    This video inspired me to go on a 3000 mile road trip with my best friend through the northern rocky mountains. It was pretty cheap and an awesome adventure. that experience completely changed my trajectory and inspired a passion in me for nature and the outdoors. For anyone thinking about doing something like this, just do it.

    Thanks for this. You took me back to the early to mid-70s when a group of high school friends and I would hitch west to The Beartooths, meet in Cooke City, and then head up into the BT Primitive area with precious little food or what would pass for proper gear today. We caught grayling, cutthroat and rainbow. Those were heady days...

    I grew up in Manhattan, Montana and watching this with the rivers i grew up fishing as a little kid with my grandparents really hits the right feels. I mainly fished the Gallatin in the Big Sky canyon and we went to Yellowstone every summer. I live up in Missoula now and boy can I not wait for summer. Great film dude your guys' photography is top notch.

    In 2016, I took my 3 kids out of school and we lived in an RV and traveled the US for one year. In the RV we saw the lower 48 (all of them), made it to Alaska on a cruise ship, and hit Hawaii on our way back to Australia (our home). This brought back so many powerful memories that I had to keep stoping the video just to deal with the emotions it brought out. We traveled so many of the same roads, and I times, I think we may have even been in the same campsites.
    I'm so glad I found this, and look forward to your future videos.

    This was on of the best videos I’ve ever seen. I don’t know if you will see this or not, but I am curious as to what you used to record your narration

    • @TightLoops
      @TightLoops  4 года назад +6

      Hey! Thanks so much for taking the time to reach out. We always see this stuff, it sometimes just takes a while to reply. I usually let the comments build up for a month or so then take them all out with one fell swoop. Not the best method, but we're often not in a position to reply immediately, and I hate having to do it on my phone. So, for this film I recorded VO with the kit mic on our camera (Sony Fs700). Its actually a really nice shotgun mic, which a Sennheiser-esque sound to it. I had bought a cheap all-inclusive kit from Senal (I think it had a mic, shock mount, stand, slr cable and a USB interface, as well as a free copy of Audacity. I couldn't figure out how to get this awful noise floor out of the USB interface when using the Senal mic, so I used the rest of the gear and replaced it with the Sony shotgun mic. I was pretty new to VO at the time, but made sure to wall off a closet and deaden the hell out of it with foam and blankets etc. Looking back now I would have done more in post to sweeten the audio a little more, but it came out ok. Since then I've started using that Senal cardioid mic again, and just ditching the shitty usb interface. All in all I think that whole Senal VO kit cost like 70 bucks or something. Worth it for sure but you'll need to do a little work to get it sounding great. I've had the privilege of recording VO on higher end mics, and it's a goal to invest in one, for sure, but they are in the $700-$1000 range and I just haven't bit the bullet yet. Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions!

      @618Fishing 4 года назад +3

      Tight Loops wow thank you so much for the detailed response! I loved this style of video. The voice over was spot on and very professional. Most of my audio comes from my LAV mic mounted to my GoPro which I sync to my Gh5 set up on a tripod when I go to edit the footage, but after watching your videos I would really like to utilize VO as well. I really appreciate the response and I look forward to your future films!

    • @TightLoops
      @TightLoops  4 года назад +3

      @@618Fishing No worries dude, appreciate the kind words. We've got some LAV mics which are great in interviews, but to get that great proximity effect in VO you really gotta use a condenser microphone

      Thanks Scott! I think our biggest issue is that we aren't "good" RUclipsrs. We upload slowly and sporadically. I wish we were better at putting out more content, but if we were really cranking it out it wouldn't be the same type of stuff. The only way you get films like ours is through a lot of time and effort. Anyway, share it around if you feel like it. Subscribe and encourage your friends to as well! It helps us out a ton, because obviously the more clout we gain on youtube and social media, the more we are able to sell projects like this to sponsors etc, which means the more we can keep making. P.S. sounds like you should listen to your gut and spring for that van ;)

    • @TightLoops
      @TightLoops  7 лет назад

      Thanks Isaac! We are now happily married :) All time lapses, both day and night were shot using photos. Both the gopro, and GH3 that we used for time lapses have built in intervalometers, so that part is easy, but you then still have to compile the images into video after the fact.

    • @isaacschelthelm
      @isaacschelthelm 7 лет назад +1

      Tight Loops thanks for the quick reply! And glad to hear about the happy wedding! I use a Panasonic G7 which has the built in intervalometer as well, just still figuring out how to tweak the settings to make it look as smooth as yours!

    • @TightLoops
      @TightLoops  7 лет назад

      hmm. Well if its "smoothness" your after, anything I shoot that has any significant motion in it, aka, people, water, etc etc I make sure to slow the shutter speed down just enough to get a little motion blur. You'll have to use a high F stop in daylight to get a good exposure. I usually max it out on the glass i have on the GH3 with I think is f.22. This varies depending on the particular scene, but I always slow the shutter speed down (lengthen the exposure) to achieve that blur. Otherwise I think it looks too jittery and choppy. When photographing at night you're pretty much have to do this regardless to let enough light in. I also compile all image sequences at 24fps because that's what we shoot video at. but perhaps doing it at 30 would be even smoother?

    Sure is beautiful country, I have lived here since I was born.. As a native Montana resident I thank the tourism industry for helping fund our states struggling economy I.e. this film here. On the other hand when I hear things like "we left for the north to avoid the crowds", I cant help but hear some sort of elitist attitude and cant help but think, you two are the "crowds". From the perspective of an angler that lives here anyway, Rock creek is barely fishable anymore, flooded with out of state license plates and people who run through the woods to cut me off at the best holes, I call the leap froggers. I hope you guys were respectful and enjoyed yourselves. Thanks for the support and you make a nice video, but every year our state is flooded with people, some humble and some that seem to exude a sense of superiority and entitlement to our water. Stay humble. Peace

    • @TightLoops
      @TightLoops  6 лет назад

      Thanks Caylin! Glad you liked the film. Just to be fair, my entire family is form Montana, and I've been fishing these waters since I was a boy as well. That stretch I was referring to is the Madison between Hebgen and Quake lakes and even when I first fished it 20 years ago it's been outrageously crowded on weekends. Hell, even most weekdays.
      It's certainly true that rivers are getting more and more crowded, and even the great state of Montana is not exempt from the growing pressures of increased angler counts. Everybody hates "leap froggers" so you're not alone, but to blame that mentality on people from out of state is a little silly. There's plenty of Montanans who'd be just as happy to leap frog you as the tourists are. And in the interest of staying humble, we should all remember that our waters don't belong to "us" any more than they do to anyone else. That's the wonderful thing about this countries public land; it's there for everyone to enjoy. It's also important to remember that none of us are really "natives" here. (I'm assuming form your name that you're not Native American)
      When we fished Rock Creek in 2015 we didn't have the same impression. Has it gotten worse? It's a shame if so, I don't imagine it can sustain too much pressure for too long. Hope you find some empty stretches this summer ;) Tight lines.

      Sounds awesome Jeremy. I've done that before in my little VW Cabriolet. Just slept right in the drivers seat for about a month and a half. Can't beat it when the only goal is to fish all day. Good luck on your trip!

    I have gone trout fishing in many parts of Montana and Idaho, Oregon and California in the 2,000's. It was a great experience. I ate some of my catches.
    I hiked a portion of the Appalachian Trail in the mid 1990's and then hiked the southern half of it the next year. Looking forward to doing the whole thing as an old man. Seeing videos like this really point great promise and "go get it, boy" at the thrill of doing it again. And, I will.
    Married, now I rarely do anything. I don't play my guitar anymore. I don't go camping, fishing, hunting, exploring, nothing. I rarely even go outside to enjoy the beautiful weather and nicely landscaped house I worked my ass off for. Whoever said marriage was supposed to be happy needs their ass kicked. I guess it can be, but I don't see it. Marriage is grand, they say, but divorce is 500 grand.
    I also have a Tahoe in storage, back in the USA, that in years past I used for camping and fishing trips. I'm going back to the USA to get it going and do some camping and fishing around the nation, and I'm not bringing "wifey" with me.
    It's going to be a prep toward getting my mindset to hike the AT again in the upcoming years, probably while in my 60's. If I wait any longer than that, there will be the greater chance of failure in my endeavor.
    Once I reach Maine, it is my intention, after I finish the Trail to the top of Katahdin, to go trout fishing for a month. It will be my next adventure until snows force me back south.
    I have started a channel peripheral to this friend and family only channel going now, specifically for revamping and riding my Kawasaki Ninja in the heart of Mexico. I'll post the link to that channel on this channel of mine, at the right time, though that Ninja channel is live already NOW.
    I also have an outdoor fishing and camping channel that, as well, will be linked in this channel of mine. That will be the channel where I put videos of purchases and preparing for my Appalachian Trail hike, and the actual hike itself. It will probably be in 3 to 5 years. The link will start showing up in 2023.
    LOOKING FORWARD to seeing the beauty of my olden golden years start playing out, cuz this ain't cutting it.

      When I was a younger man I had the pleasure of touring your country, albeit with a contingent of Marines during a NATO exercise. Your country was lovely and it's people even more so. Fond memories of snowball fights with schoolchildren as our armored vehicles rolled through small towns. Perhaps one day I shall return.

    I don’t know if you guys ever read the book “Trout Bum” but I’ve always wanted to take a year and do just that. I’ve been a Fly fisherman for 35 yrs and remember in the 70s it just seemed easier to “get away”. Sadly, you still very much need money to “rough it” these days- even campsites become expensive. Today my health has robbed me of such adventures. But I pray that I’m able to at least do a trip this Summer with my two adult Sons so we will have something like this to look back on. It may be the last time I have a chance to do this before their lives are “too busy” as well. So awesome that you guys took the time to connect w Montana. My feeling is that Montana is a Fly Fishing experience not to be missed. Some of the best trips I’ve ever had.

    • @TightLoops
      @TightLoops  6 лет назад

      Fear not! I'm sure you're life is still ripe for many adventures! And coming from one adult son who loves his dad, i doubt your kids will ever be too busy for you ;) Hows the trip planning coming?

    Truly an thing of beauty. Awesome takes on the fish rising to your flies!! I was smiling from ear to ear during this entire film, thank you. I did three summers in a row driving to Alaska and staying all summer but did not film. I really wish I would have. Excellent uplifting vibe from you two.

    • @TightLoops
      @TightLoops  7 лет назад

      Thanks so much Andrew. I wouldn't be too bummed about not filming. Sometimes we wish we weren't filming either. Its great to have these films to look back on, but sometimes it feel like living through the eyes of the camera isn't really living at all :/ That being said. we really love sharing these experiences with folks like you. For better or worse, its an itch I think we'll always have to scratch!

  • @HuntnAllTheWay

    Awesome Video! I'm really wanting to get into film making and most importantly films centered around my fishing adventures! I'm not sure on what my first camera setup should be and was wondering if you could lean me towards one!

    • @TightLoops
      @TightLoops  7 лет назад +1

      Honestly Dawson, you're first step should be to just start MAKING the films. Tech gear won't matter much at first, and arguably never does, but I'd just work on the basics of shooting and editing. With anything! If you have a smart phone chances are you have a camera more powerful than anything on the consumer market a decade ago. Start there. You can even download editing apps right onto it. If you get good enough at telling stories and articulating your vision it won't matter much what you're shooting with, but I'm sure along the journey you'll start to find products you gravitate towards. Everything looks good theses days, so its all personal preference. I've seen stuff shot on iPhones that looks like a $40,000 camera rig.
