I used to work with Sinar View-Cameras 4x5 and 5x7 , but sometimes I also worked with a Linhof 4x5 Camera, I can recommend sometimes to use a 6x9cm back to save money on film 😉 A Horseman or Toyo-View Field 4x5 Camera are more than good enough for most people. For portraits with a Field Camera, use a dummy (not a person 🤣) for preparing the Camera with all the settings, when you are ready, then call the model 😊

I tell you this true story. Three years ago, I picked up my Wista 45 DX Rosewood one afternoon, and went to a local spot about 10 minutes drive to take a couple of photos of the fields and some beautiful storm clouds. I only took two film holders with me loaded with HP5. I made a couple of passable exposures by the side of the road, and suddenly the light went from nice to brilliant. While I was recomposing to make the third exposure, a couple of very nice ladies on horseback arrived and stopped by me asking what I was up to and what was that Rosewood box with the red bellows. As I was explaining to them what this was all about I made the third exposure, brilliant I thought and it was, after a couple of minutes I pulled the filmback out and then they said bye and rode off. I then noticed that in my enthusiasm to explain everything to them I had forgotten put the darkslide back as it was still in my left hand. The negative was exposed to daylight in all its glory. After cursing and muttering a few words of Anglo Saxon, I used the last sheet of film to make one last exposure and the light was still good. Concentration is the operative word when using a LF camera. Linhoffs are very nice if somewhat very expensive these days, like everything else I guess.

The Linhof Technika was designed to be used as a hand held press camera that can also be used on a tripod. This is the reason and origins of why the Technika has a rangefinder and lenses with match cams to the specific camera.
As a view camera the Technika has very real limitations. They are poor with wide angle lenses due to the fixed bellows and need to recess the short focal length lens into the body. Early versions of the Technika required a special wide angle focusing device, later versions had rails that can be recesses to allow focusing wide angle lenses. This also means little to no camera movement (due to bellows) with wide angle lenses. Longer focal length lenses are ok within the bellows/camera draw limits.. still at these limits the Technika is flimsy and lacks stability/rigidity. Front camera movements are also limited. That ratchet front rise might be "nifty" but slow and not easy to use. Rear camera movements are Meh at best..
The better camera in many ways is the Linhof Technakardin which has far fewer limitations than the Technika in every way regarding what lenses can be used.
    Better camera system remains Sinar.

Many thanks for your input. I’m fortunate to now have 6 LF cameras that I’ve slowly collected so I can use each for their best use. The Linhof for me is near perfect for my on location portraits. I have a SG with shutter for vintage lenses like the Aero Ektar, the Intrepid for lightweight travel and a Sinar F2 if I need crazy movements. I love the build quality of the Linhof.

I also love my Toyo View 4x5 camera. However after a while I found out that I get almost the same image quality out of my 6x9 Fuji GW690 III and it's a much more portable camera that can be used without a tripod just like a Leica M. The only reason to use 4x5 is in my opinion the possibility to use tilt/shift/swing. But I need that only rarely and more or less only for architecture photography.

Hi Matt I like the slowed down photography, at least as far as 35mm is concerned, but the difference in size and weight is also a big factor for me, so I prefer to stick with Leica and Sony. In this case, 4x5 makes it even slower because you have to focus even more, I think. So it wouldn't be for me. It works and I'm happy with it, electronics as in most of the newer models, perhaps a milestone for those who need it. By the way, I am also a Patreon member now and have made a request on Facebook.but there are definitely some cool pictures coming out of it, so top! Lg Anderl

Useless Video. More of LF and I am gone! You are supposedly a pro! Lately it's equipment push! Film is done! You drive a horse and buggy? When I shot film (50 years) I shot rolls a day. Did print and process, all my own work. Everything! Film is a waste of time and money. Yeah! The Analog-Groupies are wasting time and money. I had a Linhof in Early 60's! It was gone after one year. 35mm my main way! Mamiyaflex in studio. No Rollei! Too weak! Can't leave on tripod! Hope to see more shoots! If more LF, all the best!

    LICENCE TO SHOOT A LiNHOF
Your tripod is unstable, too light and too small; it wobbles.
The Linhof is a genuine professional camera
and the Leica is for the rich amateur and you.
    Linhof nust be mounted on a professional European tripod;
minimum height 100 cm and maximum height 250 cm.
Mount a mirror box finder io the ground glass.
Do not act as the hunchback of the Notre Dame in Paris.
Stay upright, otherwise you will damage your spine.
Do not downsize your Linhof 4x5 by using a roll film back.
    What about a Technika 2x3?
LINHOF DOES NOT BUILD LENSES AND SHUTTERS.
Linhof just orders at Compur the rings with the name of Linhof on it.
You can not compare a Leica to a Linhof, a dwarf to a giant,
a VW Beetle to a Maybach, a German camera to a Bavarian camera.
LINHOF HAS MADE AN ELECTROJC TECHNIKA 4X5.
.Mind pulling out the lens, to avoid damaging the lensstandard,
set the first (top) rail free and push it into thhe Linhof body.
Release the lens standard and pull it out, without derailing it will engage to the rail.
The Technika sounds dry; it needs a drop of oil.
Which brand and type is your 135 mm lens?
Anytime I can inform you on all LF lens brands and types; made since 1900.
