    I think my biggest regret gear wise is buying without renting first. I made a lot of purchasing errors and once I started renting things first it was a game changer. Now if something is over about 1k and it’s reasonable to rent and try first I always do. It’s saved me a lot of money!

    This is a great video and I enjoyed watching. It makes me think about all the gear I’ve bought (and sold) over the past several years. I can honestly say that I haven’t really regretted buying any of my gear but there have been many things that I’ve kept for a while and then sold. The Pocket camera is probably the one item that I could never see myself using. It always seems very redundant to me since my action cameras could easily do what the pocket camera could do. Thanks for the video!

    I have the DJI Pocket, but I bought it for a very specific use. Trail running! As I visit national parks I trail run in some of them, and the pocket was the perfect use case for filming those runs. The compactness and ruggedness of a GoPro with a gimbal!

    I have a DJI OM5, DJI RSC2, and Insta360 X3 that I try to take everywhere but never end up using them too! I was convinced I wanted them soooo much and they just sit around. I'm trying to use the OM5 more often for shots of me taking photos since it can follow me when I move but I still haven't done it even though I carry it with me all of the time. Then there's the struggle when I consider selling any of this "useless" gear and I always convince myself not to let anything go because... "what if I need it."

    Pre-pandemic I had a 70-200 2.8 and thought, thats all I'll ever need for a telephoto lenses. I was shooting a lot of events and stuff indoor and so the 2.8 was crucial. During the pandemic... pretty much no events happening and I started shifting to shooting wildlife and landscapes/cityscapes and realized I no longer needed 2.8 but was finding the 200mm as very limited. Sold it and bought the 100-400 and absolute loved it and the teach and it's versatility. I did find later, once things started to open up again, that when I did travel to more urban areas or do the occasional indoor event, the 100-400 was overkill and I started missing that 2.8 aperture... but I didn't want to spend over $2000 for either of the Sony 70-200 2.8 and so I went with the much cheaper, smaller and lighter, but almost as good, Tamron 70-180 2.8.
    I also did buy a Sony 1.4x teleconverter which I don't use as much but I still try to use it when I go to airshows but if I had the chance to do it again, I probably wouldn't have purchased it.

    As a relatively new photographer I don't have enough gear to really regret anything yet. I bought a used A6000 to learn, practice and grow with and paired them to my Dad's old Minolta AF lenses with an adapter. Bought a couple used lenses to go with it (50mm 1.8 and 28-70mm) and just recently bought a used A7r III. The one item I did buy that I didn't (don't) use as much as I thought I would is the DJI Action 2 camera. I picked up a suction cup mount when I bought it and strapped it to the hood of my car for what I thought would be amazing hyperlapse videos driving through the mountains. After the second trip however a random rock completely destroyed the second screen. DJI refresh replaced it and I was ready to mount it back on but the replacement unit they sent me was defective. They did replace it with a brand new unit but after that it just sat on a shelf until this past weekend. Perhaps I will start putting it to use again more regularly. We'll see on my next drive to Portland!

    Hi Allison. There is just something about gimbals and cameras. Well, I felt I needed one for my Sony A7. Yep. I had to have it. I bought it, balanced it, stabilized it, took some great shots walking down the hallway at home with it all the to the kitchen! Fantastic. That was the only time I ever used it. Too big, too heavy, too obvious, too hard to set up. 3 years later it is collecting dust.

    Gear regrets: I just sold the chrome C-stand I bought 3 years ago and used 2-3 times total. So big, so heavy, and that chrome grease got me every time. I mostly just shoot simple cooking videos so a basic tripod is all I need! Would be nice to get one that shoots overhead, but it needs to be compact and not get in my way when I’m motoring around the kitchen!

    Same exact experience with the Weebill S. I spent a million hours perfecting getting my camera on that gimbal, but then spent a lot more hours perfecting pretty much the same shots handheld. Every once in awhile I'll use it to get a shot when I'm maybe in my car or something like that, but honestly I only use it because I feel like I should probably use it since I own it. I definitely don't need it.:-)

    Oh the Weebill S! I bought it the moment it was launched. This was my first gimbal purchase ever and I too expected it to be of regular use. The results produced from it are very good but the setup time is not worth it if you're a solo filmmaker. I still occasionally carry it on some of my travels but going handheld provides a lot of freedom when it comes to variety in shots captured, especially during hikes. This is why I tried my friend's smartphone gimbal before making another not-so-useful purchase 🤣
    Its only after making these purchases do we realize how much less gear we need to make good content.

    Your story with the gimbals sounds very familiar to me. I now have three, one broke, the second was actually too small.
    But as well as it works, the whole fumbling until the camera is balanced gets on your nerves. When DJI recently released a new one, I was thinking again.
    But I was adamant I didn't buy it.
    Sometimes you actually want to make your work easier, but then realize later that it's easier to walk around without too much equipment.

    I'd say the DJI RS3 Mini might be a decent option to try with a Sony body and the Tamron 28-75 lens, if you do want a decent lightweight gimbal. I use Panasonic bodies, and the IBIS is so good that I prefer to use that over Gimbals (unless in a jumpy vehicle or sth). Also the Tamron 70-180 f/2.8 could have been a decent alternative to the Sony 70-200 f/4. The new 2.8 seems fantastic though :)

    Thanks for your views Allison .I was a big fan of OSMO Pocket before I jumped to SonyA7s3 ..But yes in my last video when I was trying to vlog, while walking into Arniston Cave ,South Africa ,I tried to use the Sony A7S3 with GM lens and Rodes vid 2 mounted on it but believe me I was stressed because of its weight for my hand and not gettign any stabilization .I was so used to osmo pocket for my volgging ..so latter in that video i stopped using the A7s3 and started using the osmopocket specially when i was inside the cave ..But yes the footage of A7S3 is way better than Osmopocket . So i carry both of them and i use as the situation demand . Regarding gimbal I have DJIRSC2 but i hardly use except some real estate shoot or a planned shoot of model .I do agree with you that it is a challenge to set up your camera on it and then balance and then use it .And for every lens you need to remove and again balance ..So I carry the DJI RSC2 only when I have very planned video shoot and I knew what things i am going to cover but during my travel videos it is a no for me because of time consumption in balancing it and also carrying the heavy setup .This is my current situation being a small RUclipsr from India staying in South Africa.

If you want tack sharp images then the weight is necessary. However if your going for fun and want some cool shots for social media . Then the weight is not needed. I carry around a Canon 5D3 and 70-300 F4 lens. I settle for no less than what this lens produces.

    • @KumaraBhargava
      @KumaraBhargava Год назад +1

      @@Tonellacam yes. The way DJI is advancing tech, the Weebill S does feels outdated. Weebill 3 seems quite good and they've added some ergonomic feature as well like wrist support. The next Weebill has even better ergonomic support.
      Even though it is compact, the adjustment wheel on the left of the Weebill S sticks out. I'd have liked if they would've added some functionality to it like controlling any of the axes instead of using the joystick. So I removed the wheel and sealed the area. Now it packs much better.
      Also, getting mistaken for a paparazzi is hilarious.!

    I have the Insta360 1 inch. Great cam but my gripe is I don’t do anything with the footage. You can’t just easily watch it. Needs to be edited than exported. I thought I was gonna gonna watch it on my oculus lol

    You would make a great guy, we buy everything thinking it'll make us better - it's a guy thing. Yup had the DJI, Yup had the 360, Yup DJI Osmo pocket, Yup sold all my primes - you're right they're redundant. My go-to is the Canon 16-35. So my 1-lens system is: 24-105-4.0L, 2-lens system: 16-35-2.8 & 70-200-4.0 & 1.6 converter. I shoot night so I use a irex 15-2.4 for one body and my 16-35-2.8 for the other body - I'll leave one camera out on the tripod clicking off star trails and I'll take off with the other one. "If they would update it I would buy another one" Nice quote Allison... As always Safe Travels!

    Insta 360 lens scratch really easily and the lens guards absolutely destroy video quality. It's really my only knock on the camera. I wish they would make them detachable or something so you can buy replacements without having to buy a whole new camera

    • @allisonanderson
      @allisonanderson  Год назад

      Yes! If you could just buy spare lenses that would be so much better. It was $200 to replace the first set... that's over half the cost of the camera itself. At some point it's just not worth it to keep replacing them.

    • @TheDetourDuo
      @TheDetourDuo Год назад

      @@allisonanderson Feel the same way. Love the features but if I have to replace it more than once then I can live without it. Maybe the next version will address this as sooo many people share this complaint
