Like you said, no reason to use those wet rags. If anything it makes it more likely to burn because you're focusing more heat in a small area. Keep the torch moving and back it off once it gets hot enough for the solder to flow.

Dude get a Lazy Susan and a bone stand short one glue it to the Susy and you can spin the bone around and use the Bernzomatic more heat and quicker. Mobile Woodwind Service Aus. 🐊

Are you talking about the bore size of slide? Many models use a .500 bore size for the inner diameter. The whole bell section tapers toward the bell flare, so there are many different sizes between those two points.
