I'm with Melissa - go with the lighter ceiling for the smaller space and then dark trim accents will really pop! Also, I really enjoyed the podcast. I had no idea about FLDS and the Jeffs story. She's a strong woman to share the general weirdness and trauma that was her childhood. Your description of Blue cracked me up! I love the fact that Blue's mom came to your place to help him be comfortable in a new place.
Long time trim carpenter here. The wood ceiling outside acts like a giant sponge and is constantly absorbing/ releasing ambient moisture in the air. The best thing for the outside would be to relieve the ceiling( a 1/2 expansion space all the way around and a 1x applied over the face as a picture frame). That would allow seasonal moisture expansion without causing the buckling you are experiencing. You could also use trim head screws( GRK that use a #10 stardrive bit) thru the face into the rafters. A screw hold the boards infinity better than the blind nails at an angle. The ceiling inside of Gabby, like the ceiling inside the main house is thermally balanced so they move much slower. Like a door that is to tight in a jamb that sticks/rubs in the non conditioned times( early spring when you shut the heat off and re introduce moist outside air by opening windows to get fresh outside air)but then when the air is turned on for the hot summer season( pulling the outside humidity out of the interior air that is allowed in with open windows). The door almost in the course of a day or two goes back to opening again with no rubbing. Hope the info helps and for not being construction people from the start of your builds. You have done a really good job to get where you are today.
Yes I totally agree. I did my front porch ceiling like you described and I miter cut the joints too; so the tongue n groove can expand and contract due to moisture.
Yeah, I'm no expert, but I grew up in an old house and owned one later and wondered about the expansion and shrinking when they put it up. We had a bathroom door that wouldn't stay shut 6 months of the year and stuck shut the other six months. We want to build our next home and would prefer a steel frame building for this other reason.
In total agreement with/ Mr. McGinn. As you saw on your ceiling the accumulated expansion and contraction is approx a ½”+- across the expanse of the ceiling. Each plank absorbs moisture and swells in both width and length. It also will shrink again when conditions dry out. Room for this cycle needs to be built into the the design of the build i.e. the frame Mr. McGinn suggests. Wood is a living material. It moves seasonally.
After flipping houses for 10 years, I would go with creamy white. With the walls sloping down, creamy would give you more light reflection maximizing the light inside. Good call Melissa!
If you do shiplap, I would recommend using a “undercoater/sealer” on all six side to prevent warping. Again, make sure the moisture is 12% or less when sealing the boards.
Your buckling is the t+g. It may have been very dry when you put it up and now with the moisture increasing it is expanding. You need to increases allow for this expansion. expansion expansion
YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE SWELLED BOARDS THE SAME AS A HARDWOOD FLOOR. you need to leave room on the sides of any plank system for expansion when the humidity goes up. if each one of those wide planks expands just 1/16th of an inch that means you will need at least a 1-inch gap on the sides for every 16 planks. by just trimming down the ones that were removed you will end up with a gap when summer comes and the humidity goes down. the proper way to fix this issue is to remove the planks on the edges (in width) and make sure there is a gap. making things tight and going without trim may look nice, but it will cause failures as time goes by.

As soon as they showed the buckle, I thought that they probably neglected to stain/seal the other side of planks before installing them. Natural wood has to be sealed on all sides, and even then, it will expand and contract. It's best not to use natural wood products outdoors, there are plenty of other options. I think “creamy white“ would be better for the ceiling. I’m a freak for wood 🪵. But, you have growing kids. Wood may instill confinement unintentionally. White allows for dreaming 💭 to the skys. Awesome vlog👍🏾😀!
Blue is cute! Whiskey is adorable! ❤ Nix seemed so happy to see another horse 🐎! I dont know if he even considered Whiskey another horse😂. Whiskey is just a baby! ❤ He just needs hands on lots of brushing, hugs & kisses treats to get use to having humans around. He needs a trim under his face. I can't believe how long that hair is. My goodness. He looks like a little hippy! 😊 Well, I would give him a lot of attention & treats just hang out with the little guy. He will get use to you! ❤ As far as the ceiling goes, I would go with a white cream color paint or a very light wood with a white wash stain. Have a great week enjoy the horses. ❤
Ceiling: Pickling. Either white, or take the wall color... Convert to oil-base and cut it with thinner to get an opaque stain to your satisfaction.. You should still see the grain through it... Then top with satin varnish for a primo finish. Still wood, not paint, but very much a blended, less 'woody' look. And it's old school. Works with the cabin look you already have.
Be where your feet are. I love that! I'm going to have to share that with my son, who is battling inoperable cancer. When I get new support shirts made with family pics of my son beside his loved ones, I was grasping for the right quote. 'Be where your feet are', how appropriate. Thank Youuuuuuu❣️and infinite blessings to alllllll 💯🌍
I have a trailer with doug fir decking it buckles like that every winter.the tung and gruve boards are swelling with moisture you might need to seal them
Buckling from expansion,, caused by absorbing moisture, 100% normal. Well dried by age or kiln lumber 6 to 9 % but outdoors,, depending upon where, (Phoenix dead dry, South Carolina Humid as all heck) it can swell enough to 'barrel vault'. I have seen hardwood floors flooded by the fire department, barrel vaulted into a hump 2 feet high. EXTERIOR siding of all types, must or needs to be back primed before installation. Hardie Board cement siding,, back prime it. T&G siding back prime it. Lap siding back prime it. Back priming can be a simple and cheap as a 50/50 mixture of mineral spirits and linseed oil,, or use the left over gallon of paint from the kids bedroom,, or BIN 123 white or gray latex primer.. The goal is to reduce , eliminate, or slow the moisture coming through the backside of the siding or lumber. It reduces buckling from expansion too.
As another mentioned. Its also taking on moisture,ALL exterior wood should be sealed ALL sides.Fir is also most likely to move, cedar is best.Agin when off make sue no moisture is some how coming threw roof. Also on fir ,which I avoid I double staple it on face, no blind work, doesn't hold.Custom builder for 25 years
Awwwwww!!!!! I hope Blue AND the little guy work out. It seems he and Blue have some kind of special bond if he had to come with. And he seems to be open to being friends with Lexi.
I would pickle a wood ceiling so you can still see the grains. Brush on Pickling Mix 1 part white latex primer-sealer with 3 parts water. Using a 4-inch brush, paint on a patch of the pickling solution. Tip: When pickling soft woods like pine, apply a water-based wood conditioner first, then sand lightly to allow the pickling to take evenly.
Blue is beautiful!!! He had a smile when you kissed him! If Whiskey is around humans all the time he’ll be more apt to bonding with one or two. I’m hoping he finds a kindred spirit in a couple of 4H kids and he shines. Mini ponies are tricky feral or not. He’s in the right place though with the right Momma to guide him to a better calling than a feral little guy. I bet as soon as he figures out that love, scratches and treats come from the two legged newbies he’ll catch on quick. 😉❤ Your little girl may have that magic touch Frisky Whiskey loves. Time will tell. I read that it takes a couple of years for newly built houses to settle. Is that what happened to your ceiling outside? Hopefully your house is settled and y’all relieved all the pressure and no more buckling or anything else from here on out! Your apartment is starting to get really exciting! I love to see the finishing of the interior and the color schemes y’all choose. I can’t wait to see the appliances and furniture that get picked out by the kids???🤨 I’m just excited to see it all come together! God Bless Y’all and All Y’all’s Projects Past, Present and Future!🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️♥️♥️😊😊😊😊😊

Melissa is right, both my wife and I agree that the ceiling would look great with a creamy white ceiling. It will open up that smaller space and look great!
Go for the light ceiling, it will lift it up. Blue and Whisky have their woolly jumpers on. Come spring you will have a white mat every time you brush Blue😂. Shame about the buckled boards, expansion nightmare, have the same problem with our floor board.😢. I did watch your podcast, could not even begin too understand what that poor girl has suffered. Hope she has a good support team 💜💜

White ceiling is the way to go, it brightens and expands. Pine yellows with age and is ugly. Ship lap is a lot of work. Melissa, your description of Blue is hysterical. Blue looks like a great horse. Be where your feet are, I like that.
I don't know wood but with tile you need expansion joints or it buckles, many clients wanted to butt tiles to minimize grout but runs rixk of buckling more the jpint usually is where the vloor meets the wall so maybe that is a consideration...
Creamy white with edge wood accents is my vote...Having wood ceilings totally will make the area seem smaller, especially with the canted ceiling... 👍😎👍
Your outdoor ceiling boards are buckling because you probably installed them when they were dry. Then comes the rainy season/snow and they adsorb moisture and expand. You should install them in winter when they're internally moistened and you'll only have them shrink in the summer when dry. Then the following winter they'll tighten up again just like they were when you installed them.
You could put up white ship lap. They put it on houses everyday. Becareful of your back. If these were a package deal and had to come together because there friends. Please dont separate them. That would be like someone separating you and your husband and sending him off somewhere. I hope if you return them you return both of them. You can always put the little guy in the barn when working with the white horse. And kids change there minds like the wind blows. I raised 3.
It's Dolores (Mrs. Tony) I decided to type a message directly. This is from experience of painting a great deal over my almost 70 yrs. I agree with you Melissa. If you do the full-on creamy white (with dark trim) it will give life to your small space. You chose to do those beautiful large windows, let them do their best job of bringing as much light into a bright space. It would be very subdued by a wood ceiling. Just remember, It's a lot easier to change the color of the walls than a wood ceiling. You'd never chose to paint a wood ceiling. You are making a great space for your children & guest. Keep making good choices to make the space a bright & happy place. Between you & me, it's not the wood or paint that is bringing happiness to the space... you & Jeremy is what the space needs most. You both bring joy to every space you are in, even our space. Thank you for sharing your life and your "good people" vibes. We adore you both.
A lighter ceiling will make a cozy space feel larger. Since you aren't installing uppers in the kitchen area, it doesn't matter if you have clear coat, stain or paint.
My Dad blew his back out after he threw a paper towel at the trash can & missed, then bent over to pick it up and sneezed at the same time. It took him hours to crawl from the kitchen to the living room couch. It was only 25 feet away.
As you already may know houses expand and retract over the seasons. It's always important to leave gaps to allow fluctuation. This is why your boards are buckling. Always leave a gap and cover the gaps with trims and moldings. I noticed where your tongue and groove meets the siding is too tight. So I imagine your T&G is probably also right up against the house as well. Gaps are important almost everywhere when using undried materials. Furniture wood doesn't warp because it has been properly dried. Construction lumber is not dried. It will always twist.
I think Melissa is right about the lighter ceiling. I think a dark ceiling would make the ceiling look lower and the room look smaller. But if you really want a wood ceiling, you could go with very light-colored wood.
You were initially correct to cut the back of the groove off the boards. What you need now is to also seal the back of the boards with a waterproof sealer. To make the fit you only need a little time on the table saw. Cut the board back to the required width on the top edge, then come back and clip out the backside. It only takes one horizontal cut and one vertical cut. You just have to lower the blade so it rips out the board from the bottom up till it is the same as the prior groove. Next, put the board up on the edge of the saw and run it through the saw to clip off that chunk. That will leave you with the necessary overlay and the groove to slot in without having to work it around the other groove.
I'd prefer a warm white ceiling to the pine, especially since the side walls are shorter than normal. One color will unify the space and create the illusion of greater height. Plus, no buckling!
I'm a natural wood kinda girl, so that would be my choice. Melissa, that was a "hit home" quote. I need to share it with my daughter, who is constantly 10 thoughts in at all times. Thank you.
Absolutely a ceiling the same color as the walls because not only is the space small but the ceilings are low on the sides. Then do a big faux wood beam across the peak to bring the eye upward and make the ceiling look taller and more grand.
I'm with Melissa - go with the lighter ceiling for the smaller space and then dark trim accents will really pop! Also, I really enjoyed the podcast. I had no idea about FLDS and the Jeffs story. ❤
"Nervous Rider" hurt his back adjusting stirrups? Sounds about right. I kid. Love you guys.
Walls and ceiling matching color
The moisture in the boards froze and expanded during the winter freeze. This happens all the time with asphalt on roads.
I sincerely hope Blue works out. All horses are beautiful and magnificent to me. 🐎 🐴 ❤❤
As another mentioned. Its also taking on moisture,ALL exterior wood should be sealed ALL sides.Fir is also most likely to move, cedar is best.Agin when off make sue no moisture is some how coming threw roof. Also on fir ,which I avoid I double staple it on face, no blind work, doesn't hold.Custom builder for 25 years
You’re a hell of a carpenter brother
Exciting to have the new horse for trial. Hope it works out the way it's needed!
Awwwwww!!!!! I hope Blue AND the little guy work out. It seems he and Blue have some kind of special bond if he had to come with. And he seems to be open to being friends with Lexi.
I would pickle a wood ceiling so you can still see the grains. Brush on Pickling
Mix 1 part white latex primer-sealer with 3 parts water. Using a 4-inch brush, paint on a patch of the pickling solution. Tip: When pickling soft woods like pine, apply a water-based wood conditioner first, then sand lightly to allow the pickling to take evenly.
What a great description of Blue.
Put up both ceiling ideas and then I’ll pick ! Lol. They both sound nice ! But my vote is actually the pine !!! But whatever you go with I’m sure it’ll be awesome looking !
And I love Blue. Is he a what a Morgan maybe ? Didn’t see alot of him but he looking super gentle !!!
Yeah, ship lap is a way better option for exterior, even using cedar or redwood.
live in Alaska and watch your program as well as other programs there is one program I think you might be interested in which Is Lumina Acres. they have installed a Heat master G10 wood boiler that hears there whole property and only burns approximately 3 to 4 cords of wood per year. you can see on the following program the instillation start ( we have been waiting a year for this) and (this could be a total disaster)
Definitely with you Melissa. White would look so good.
Your horse is establishing who it the Alpha of the ranch. Now it's over and he'll be friendly now. Love the mini horse.
Melissa is right, both my wife and I agree that the ceiling would look great with a creamy white ceiling. It will open up that smaller space and look great!
❤️❤️❤️ the horses!!
On a toujours des surprises après avoir fait des travaux, Jérémy je pense que tu n’avais pas assez pis d’espace lorsque tu as posé ta frise de bois. On apprend toujours. En revanche tu poses très bien les plaques de BA 13. Avec Mélissa vous avez réuni de magnifiques chevaux 🐎. Cela va faire plaisir à vos enfants. Bonne continuation dans vos travaux. 👍👍👏👏😘🇫🇷
Definitely white ceiling !
I raised 3.
Lighter ceiling...Love Blue and Whiskey. I know you will choose what is best for your family and the horses. Your compassion is contagious!
I, personally, think the creamy white will keep the space open and bright. While a wood ceiling is pretty, it also makes it feel closed in.😊
It's Dolores (Mrs.
Have a strong feeling that Blue is going to be a great horse, hes lovely❤
I hope both Blue and Whiskey settle in well with everyone.
Creamy white in the small space. I'm glad Jeremy's back is healing.
Blue is a sweet horse with your daughter. He is very relaxed.
Great Music
Such beautiful horses and pony! I hope they become family 🐴🐎🐎💖
Thank you.
Oh the sound of the chicken and the sheep really sounds good for a country side living.
Amei vê Los bem com saúde e terminando a casa tudo nesta vida da trabalho né bjssssssss
I LOVE the night sky up there, I live in Los Angeles, and with the lights, you don't get the stars that you do where you are. From a long-time FAN ❤
❤️ 🌟
Creamy white with dark trim
The Wildlife out there is Amazing.
Great solution ripping the groove off the planks to make them simply overlap! 👌 genius! 😊
Thanks! 👍
Creamy white ship lap for ceiling.
I have to agree with Melissa on the ceiling. A smaller space needs brightness to not feel so closed in.
We’ve had a mini for 15 years. He’s a lot of fun. But he’s an escape artist.
Absolutely a ceiling the same color as the walls because not only is the space small but the ceilings are low on the sides. Then do a big faux wood beam across the peak to bring the eye upward and make the ceiling look taller and more grand.
Creamy white ceiling! Makes the space look larger and brighter.
