Slovak math teacher is one of best among Czech math teachers. :D He is speaking Slovak in the video.

The video is from TEDx in Slovakia, so Slovak language is the natural choice. Prof. Hejný is bilingual; he lived and worked many years both in Czech and in Slovak republics.

(the second part, first is below, oops)
A good teacher supplies appropriate problems and discreetly organizes class discussion. And - admires great suggestions and provides encouragement. Good teacher never ever mocks the kids.
"The teacher must be respectful of the fact that the kid is thinking."
"Making kids learn by memorizing rules is good for totalitarian regimes."
"No institution, no laws are as good a guarantee of democracy and prosperous society as thinking citizens."

Without subtitles, almost no one can understand this.

I am sure someone will provide subtitles soon. But to sum Hejny's talk up: a good math teacher (especially at the elementary level) steers away from explanation and advise; does not correct the kids as soon as they make a mistake (does not corrrect them, instead, leads them to discover the mistake by themselves); is patient and respects intellectual autonomy of the children....(cont. below)

Ano. Úcta...úcta k dieťaťu chýba vyhorelým učiteľom, aj niektorým rodičom. Těšme sa, že deti myslia. Deti by sa mali v procese výchovy a vzdelávania formovať a nie deformovať. ... Doufám, že se jiskra rozhoří a vznítí se plamen. Ja ako rodič si celmi přeji změnu v celém školství...Děkuji všem, kteří se pokouší o změnu a nevzdávají to. Mama :)

while the method described here teaches math and critical thinking in general much better than what we usueally experience, it fails at explaining to children that the world does not work like that. out there, you have to deal with bureaucracy, lots of red tape, following absurd rules and so on. if children dont expect this, how will they deal with it? will the number of the creatively thinking ones be high enough to change the status quo? hopefully so. and one more thing. what if the creative minds come to the conclusion that democracy is not the best form of state? the professor speaks as if his premise was that democracy is the best what we can have. but is it really?

+Šimon Evin you miss the point entirely and he addresses exactly that. It is a crime to destroy the hope and joy of learning and by destroying the interest and potential in children to learn to think for themselves, you are destroying civil society. They have many years where that lesson can be learned from other sources. That should not be the role of teachers, unless you prefer living in a totalitarian state. Children should not be the battlefield for such an ideological war.

+William Bila read my comment once agian. In the first part, I clearly acknowledged his approach. And not teaching ideology is impossible, for it is impossible to have no ideology. Even if you claim to have none, that makes it an idelogy actually. And also, I am not saying that this method should not be adopted. It should, but it should be accompanied by explanations that out there, the world is not like that and that often you will have to to useless things and things you dont like. Isnt it school that should prepare children for life? And if the children are to be creative and change and improve the civil society, they have to know what they are facing, in order to be able to conter it. But if they dont learn it and than meet it in a crash, they can be discouraged and desillusioned.
