  • Amy Lin loves math, is passionate about teaching math and has seen how children's fear of being wrong in math has crushed their spirits. Amy talks about the notion that math is "ish"and doesn't have to be about being exactly right. She shares how math teachers can create places where all students are curious, creative and actively part of the learning conversations.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Wonderfully said. And YES, she DID say she wants a culture where being bad at math is socially unacceptable. Just like not being able to read is shockingly disappointing and frowned upon. We shouldn't accept a culture of numerate deficient individuals.

I'm actually glad she said it the way she said it, because it forced me to think about it. Like wouldn't it be great if one day someone like me, a "math illiterate," would be like someone who couldn't sign his name back in the day. How much smarter our society would be on the whole.

Excellent Lessons : In every other subject, you are allowed to have your own independent questions formed by your curiosity and creativity. It develops deeper interest in subject. Let math be that.. Teacher gives formula and answers, let student form the questions and real world models. All the research of computer science is based on this principles. You have computing power ready, go figure out what you can do with it.

Totally agree...visual perceptions aid in understanding a concept way better than other means. Math is fun n interesting if learnt this way..

Re: more than one correct way to pattern - YES! Thank you!! (See 5:27 hit time.) I had this conversation with my daughter about her homework the other night.

This is great. I wish I had this when I was younger. Learned to like math on my own but years later.

Just like teaching computer science or chess The teaching method works best when we can tailor it to the current level of understanding, enthusiasm, real interest, and intent to apply it. Schools tend to need to be somewhat "one-size-fits-all", due to economics and logistics. One place even public schools can improve without using greater resources - is to regularly evaluate. As it is today we do not usually find that a student is truly failing math until they get to Algerbra II

Math is CERTAINLY worth MUCH more than many time wasting projects students are forced to waste time on!

what about those students who see in numbers? What about those students who want to challenge themselves? we all learn differently?

I'd prefer it if she said "make loving math a social norm." But I think she meant what she said.

Improve a students math abilities by having them do music, and chess!

Yeah, I get what she was thinking. I just thought it was a funny thing to say in a talk about math anxiety.
Also even though it being socially unacceptable suggests a smarter culture it's obviously not the point and doesn't necessarily help. I also know people who couldn't sign their names but are still hard working contributors to society and excel in many other fields. But I think it would help if math were a social norm so you'd get lots of practice every day. That's were I think she's going.

Did we ever consider that discussions such as these sort of establish math as a subject that is not normal and that in of itself creates a barrier to student acceptance and delight in the topic? Here is the bigger problem, in my view. A novel teacher must also prepare students for a math universe who neither present or teach the same way that they do. In fact, the "traditional" approach dominates like a math hegenomy and it is success in that hegemonic learning style that will still control the definition of math success.

Sounds like it. I guess that she should have said something different like "Make people realise that math is good for them".

what did she say? I don't understand Changing the culture of math makes kids feel good about themselves so then they will do better. We've been on this feel good kick for years...and the US just keeps slipping against other nations.

If students where thought more stats then the economy would probably be in much better shape, as one of my teachers said.
