  • Writer's Review and Analysis - Looking Back at Season 5... That was some rough writing!
The Dragon Prince Season 5 was a lot of fun, but there were numerous problems. The writers bucked conventional wisdom and risked everything on a fluid story building up over multiple season WITHOUT focusing on strong, individual, singular stories from season to season. This would have anchored the audience in each installment, but instead the writers wanted something that flowed and required all the seasons to be seen together. This worked wonderfully in season 3, but can they pull it off again? Lars is here to share his thoughts and insights!

Great video! It's interesting to see a writer's perspective on the series.
Do you think the time skip was a good idea? Because for me personally, that has been the biggest problem with these new seasons. The main conflict of the show used to be stopping a war, but now, it's stopping a bad guy from being released. To me, that feels less serious. Yes, there is the sunfire elves conflict, but that involves Amaya and Janai more than the core trio.
Another big issue I have is with the villains. Claudia isn't nowhere near as threatening as Viren used to be, so I just don't feel like the stakes are that high. I also don't think it's a very good idea to release the villain you introduced in season 2 in the very last season.

Thank you! And I do agree with your criticisms of the series. The time skip was not a good idea when the audience had to do research in order to understand what was going on. I personally love addendums and extra work for a series I love, i.e. the Cosmere, but you CANNOT continue your story without giving your viewers/readers important updates on where the characters are going. Rayla leaving Callum off screen, only for her to arrive fairly shortly after season 4 began was a useless drama bomb and confused way too many people. Plus, I would have liked to have seen Amaia and Janai fall in love. Yes, I saw it coming, but seasons 3 was the transition from enemy to friends! The time skip just had way too much happen off screen that was vital to the characters!
And again, Aaravos should have been released sooner; I agree! Or he should have had a much stronger impact on the world. The shadow creatures and other agents should have been looming over everything starting sometime in season 4. Release Aaravos at the end of season 5, build him up as a global threat in season 6, and conclude in the seventh. And because Claudia's arc is being handled as a fall from grace, still... The time spent of her and Teri could be way better utilized. The one problem with my critique and suggestion here, though, is that Viren NEEDS two seasons to build him up as a sympathetic and possibly redeemable character. That part has been done very well! But it has come at the expense of making Claudia more villainous OR, more importantly, making Aaravos a greater, more immediate threat to the good guys.
When the series eventually concludes, I'll definitely do a full retrospective to see what can all be learned from this show and its honestly fascinating experience! Seeing as it is one of the few shows that has somehow survived Netflix's insane desire to axe good projects...

Kim'Dael was an utterly pointless character who was solely created to explain Rayla's fear of water in a cool way. And just like Ellis, Ava, N'than, Deadwood/Elmer the animal doctor & many more; we'll probably never see her again.
