  • Red coral (Corallium rubrum) is an endemic and emblematic species for the Mediterranean Sea. Its presence is an important component of Mediterranean rocky habitats, as it provides shelter, protection and food for a myriad of species.
Red coral also carries high economic value. Distinguished by its deep red color, it has been harvested for thousands of years for making jewelry.
Red coral grows in colonies at depths of 10 to 800 m, but in recent decades its populations in shallow waters plummeted, affected by a combination of direct and indirect human and environmentally-induced factors.
To mitigate the situation, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) has adopted multiple recommendations towards ensuring the sustainable harvest of the species. In order to fill important knowledge gaps on the status of the species in the region, the GFCM also launched in 2020 a research programme on red coral in several Mediterranean countries.
