My father worked on Sponge boats when I was younger and I always loved sponges ..The way they get them and what is needed to clean them..Now my oldest brother deals and sells sponges for a living ... Tarpon springs florida sponge capital of world
Whats his shop called? I was just in tarpon yesterday. There is quite a process to clean them properly. My old neighbor used to just leave them outside. They would stink up the whole neighborhood as they died and dried out.
My grandfather and many of my family were sponge divers in Greece, they were very clever men and used to navigate the seas using the stars and basic compass!
Hi, I am a student at NSU University School and I really enjoyed watching this film on sponges. I am learning about them in my marine class, but never really thought about them as something so interesting to study. This video changed my perspective on how big the sponge world is. :)

This is why the Georgia aquarium needs some more sea animals here is some examples: *sea sponge:* there tanks would be helpful to clean some of the fish tanks in the aquarium and that place were we could touch the star fish. *humpback whales/blue whales:* they may have whale sharks but we could get something new they could make them in that open ocean tank I would love to see some! *Barracuda:* these fish should have there own tank to because they may eat the angel fish and they would be good to see there. That’s all folks!
Hello I'm a student at NSU University school and I'm taking a marine science class. In my class we are Currently learning about sponges and I have wanted to learn more about the larvae of the sponge and how they find the "Perfect" location.
That is what the Ctenophora sister hypothesis states. However, if a sponge had these features, we would probably call it by another name. Also a new paper has just been published which offers new evidence refuting the Ctenophora-sister hypotheses and claims that Porifera are the most ancient animal. Hi, I️ am a student at NSU University School, and I’m taking a marine science class right now! I️ really liked the video! And I️ had some questions about the sponges after the video. Why were they left without nervous system, and can they still evolve? It would be nice if you sometime have a free time to come to our school, and give us a lecture about sponges.
This is one of the arguments against Ctenophora as sister group to all other animals. Sponges display genetic and morphological characteristics that are also absent in all other animals, such as lack of gastrulation, tissues, germ layers, and symmetry. According to the latest widely-cited article, sponges are the oldest animal lineage and sister group to all other animals (Pisani, 2017).
ahh, crochet has opened me to a world of information that I never really thought i would need to know but definitely will randomly bring up to people for the next 2 years lmao
So...sponges are basically 'saltwater mushrooms'...therefore, they are the ocean-equivalent of fungi...(both plant and animal). Maybe, the problem isn't finding 'what happened to the nervous system', and more the researcher that can't look at 'commonalities with land-based life' that are known to be similar?
I don’t think they necessarily lost their central nervous system I think they never needed it so they just didn’t develop one. And as for the jellyfish kind of thing they probably developed independently just because we don’t understand it doesn’t mean it’s at unbelievable I’m pretty sure that’s how octopuses came to be
Interesting.. call me ignorant, seriously I thought sponge were purely man made. so that’s explained why our old sponge has such huge pore, dark in color and shaped weirdly because it’s natural, instead of artificial ones as in car wash or boxy dish sponges I would like to add that Those local “sponger” had such unique speech rate, i haven’t heard these kind of accents before . Part of word sounded like from Southern African.
i was just searching about that, here i found some information that you could find interesting! www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(17)31453-7 www.theguardian.com/science/2017/nov/30/evolution-row-ends-as-scientists-declare-sponges-to-be-sister-of-all-animals
I find claims like, they are true survivors, because they still look like they did forever ago.... Everything else that's not extinct survived that long too XD still looking like their primitive forms doesn't mean they are better in any way.
you guys should put back and multiply what you take out of the ocean ALL CORALS. This upsets me knowing corals are endangered right now and you guys are doing this shit. At least plant it back wtf

I always find sponges interesting to me and it amazes me that they are not the first species to become multicellular organisms.

Great video, really helps me understand more about sponges.
Is there any way that sponges might have had organs or senses prior to what we see today?

JCG MaTv1 EVOLUTION IS NOT REAL
everything can still evolve but when something has been relatively unchanged for 100s of millions of years like sponges its unlikely
