When I was getting treated for OCD, I told my therapist that it is like I have a bully in my head 24/7 and that bully knows all my deepest, darkest secrets worries and fears and that bully lives to torment me all the time. It's like a bully you can never escape because the bully is in your own head.

+Kate Rentz Yes!! Pure OCD is the hardest. You can have intrusive thoughts and images, it's a nightmare to watch someone you love suffer with is. Medications can either help a little or make you much worse. They have a new DNA testing that will show what medications you can and cannot take. It's an important break through.

    My OCD has made me
    Have thoughts about going crazy
    Getting sick
    Dying
    Developing schizophrenia
Something bad happening to my family
    Someone trying to hurt me
    Me being a bad person
Me being stuck in a dream
    Going to hell
    Being punished
    My OCD has made me
    Not wear the color green
    Hate the # 3 couldn't do anything is 3s
Wash my hands till they bleed
    Walk a certain way
Walk up the stairs a certain way
Not eat or drink certain things
Check the doors over and over at night
    Check windows
Do things over and over till I get them a certain way
    Pinch myself
    Have panic attacks
Now I'm not delusional, I know they way I think and the things I do are unreasonable, it's just the thoughts dont go way and it creates this terrible anxiety. Animateddreamer Disclaimer: I don't have a diagnosis for ocd. I have a strong suspicion I have it though. In 2017-2018, I was extremely scrupulous about everything, from washing my hands out of fear that any particle on them would contaminate me or my family/friends to making sure my grammer was exactly perfect in regular speech and even text messaging to ensure that I wasn't confusing them or being deceitful. You might think it's evil to resist the compulsions but if you question anything, you can almost always give yourself the benefit of the doubt. For me, this started as not washing my hands when I came inside. I still have "dilemmas" every now and then but they're much less frequent, and I have a far greater awareness of when they are irrational.

Before I got treatment for my ADHD and OCD, the two of them together made each other worse! It’s a terrible combination. On one hand I had the impulsive, unfocused, irritability, and hyperactivity from the ADHD, and on the other hand the OCD was causing extreme anxiety and rituals. I literally thought about killing myself until I started treatment. Now I’m so much happier.

People forget OCD with doubts, guilts, ruminating on intrusive thoughts, past, future, which infuse compulsions of avoidance ect. It bugs me when people think its all external compulsions not internal or its cleaning and not self deconstruction of normal things. I see a therapist once a week. My house is a mess. I spend most my time researching things to make me feel better about the intrusive thoughts and fears and why I must not touch certain things for no reason. If I hear another person say they are "so ocd" for wanting their clothing color coded I'm going to hit them. But then I have ptsd for several forms of trauma and anxiety. But 90% of the people I come across don't clean or have contamination fears. Its usually compulsions related to intrusive thoughts of harm, sexual, phobic natures. Its not who we are and our fears and obsessions don't mean anything bad will happen but we still overthink it for days and weeks on end. I constantly sing songs in my head to distract. Ugh. (Update, down to therapy twice a month lol. Feel a lot better and go days without compulsions or ruminating too long or even thinking about it. But maybe I just got used to giving it the finger so now its second nature to ignore it and see no meaning. Still have flares but it really does get better with help! I feel more me then ever after a lifetime or sntruggles and a complete explosion of it years ago. It gets better!)

Even contamination fear OCD (the "cleaning" one) doesn't necessarily follow the stereotype. I have contamination fear ocd and although I hate mess and it stresses me, when my OCD gets really bad I actually have a hard time with cleaning because I have to fight almost panic level anxiety everytime I do, and when it swung into severe I was so afraid of contaminating myself and stressed out with the compulsions and rituals I had to do after which would take hours, and my skin, especially on my hands, got so sore from the constant scrubbing to make them feel clean again that I outright avoided going anywhere near "contaminated "areas where possible, and I used to spray dettol disinfectant absolutely everywhere when I did clean. ...I clawed back some ground into moderate but it still flares up, although I have had brief periods of remission in the past, something eventually triggers it back again, and it snowballs very quickly if I'm not careful.
I also have the checking type of OCD but that's milder.

often times medications is crucially helpful to allow people to do the work that therapy/ERP/CBT takes to be successful in managing your OCD - so I'd say both together are best until you can learn to cope and manage without the medication, or one day without therapy too

One of my OCDs was that whatever i touched I had to touch it twice. Say if I was about to write something, being a right handed, i would hold the pencil with my left hand first and then I would pass it to my right hand to write. Basically, it meant that if I touched the edge of a table with the tip of my left index finger, I had to touch it with the tip of my right index finger. In the beginning it was extremely strict, literally almost everything I touched I had to do this ritual. I even got to the point of thinking that when I bathe the water particles I that touched me made me.... uneven (that's what I call it when I don't touch things twice). It was really hard to tone down, I got it when I was around 10 and still have it to this day but its not as compulsive as before( I ended up becoming extremely neurotic instead). Sometime it was so bad that a random lady's shirt sleeve on the street brushed the nail on my pinkie finger while I was walking down the street with some classmates and I stopped speaking mid-sentence just to follow the lady and touch my pinkie finger's nail to her shirt.I also had to make it look accidental so she wouldn't think I was trying to rub her. It was annoying.Even if I don't do the compulsion, I would think about it all the time.

what can be quite annoying and forms a stigma about OCD is that everyone who is clean or tidy thinks they have it. less the 1% of the population has it so everyone claiming they have it on OCD videos doesnt add up. it trivilaises one of the most complicated and misunderstood mental illnesses! people meed to stop jumping to conclusions. OCD is crippling so if you need to be tidy but can function normally odds are you don't have it.

    • @louise1596
      @louise1596 6 лет назад +9

The view count on this video is almost 60,000 and 1% of that would be 600 participants or OCD sufferers and there are less than 300 comments on this video. So while I agree with you, that it is frustrating that people either self-diagnose or confuse such a debilitating illness with just being clean or tidy. It is still common that people will seek out comfort online and hence it is possible that some people in the comments of this video are probably being honest about their condition and just require some external support. Less than 10% of people with OCD seek our treatment because either they are scared of being reported or they are not actually aware that they have it (this is because of the false stigma that has developed around this illness). So while your comment does carry validity, it is also important to keep in mind that some people here probably just want some help or support and telling them that they do probably do not have this difficult illness comes across as a little harsh, it might be kinder to simply recommend that they seek out a formal diagnosis instead of attempting to self-diagnosis. Most of the people here are probably watching this video or ones like these because they are either in pain or are confused, whether they have OCD or not, a little compassion goes a long way. Saying that I do not know if you were specifically referencing this video or another one, so please let me know if I am wrong.

I sort of had this "obsession" from age 7 to 13 that I kept going to the bathroom at night because I was afraid of wetting the bed. I would go to the bathroom up to 13 times a night sometimes and if I wasn't going to the bathroom, I was lying in bed checking every second whether I had to go to the bathroom. These thoughts and compulsions would keep me up at night and would drive me crazy.
I also had very strict rituals before going to bed and if I didn't follow them correctly, I was worried I wouldn't get a good night's sleep. The obsessions would get worse during stressful times, like on vacation or going to a new school.
I think this may've may've been OCD, but the only other person I've ever heard of who obsessed about the same thing, is my older sister.

His obsessions have manifested by having intrusive thoughts about blasphemy, and then turned into digital matrix type of thoughts, and now it about death. I really feel like someone is inside his head, luckily he is very in tuned with reality, and his surroundings. In his case I don't see actual compulsions, other than closing his eyes at times, to avoid dealing with his thoughts. I've struggle with OCD since being a young child. In my 20s it became paralysing & I couldn't function however in my 30s I sent 13 months as an inpatient due to other struggles,it was CBT based & that helped in all areas of my life. But the thing I found most helpful for my OCD was graded exposure work,I intensely worked on this everyday for the 13 months it was really hard but iam able to engage in the world so much more. It's something I have to pay attention to everyday to keep on top of it but it's transformed my life, would totally recommend it & it's something that can be done out of hospital which is a bonus!

My obsession makes me have my volume on the tv on an even number. If I do something once, i have to repeat it a lot, for example, if I put my hair up, no matter how neat it is, I will do it again. I hate odd numbers and like things to match or be symmetrical. I get stressed out a lot. I also make sure I get to school 30 minutes before school starts, if not I feel late. I hate this so much! I need CBT!! love you Kati xx

I was diagnosed when I was 3 or 4, and I had to do CBT therapy. Which that had to be the single most best thing I could have ever done. There are still some things I struggle with, but I understand how irrational it is. When I get really stressed out, my symptoms get insanely worse. Usually I get an intrusive thought of people I care about getting decapitated, and the only way to avoid that, I would have to do something until it was right. One time, I thought my family were going to get decapitated in a car wreck, and at the time, I was misusing medications to deal with my OCD, and other problems. I had stolen about 35 2mg Valium. In order for my family to be safe, I had taken 100mg of muscle relaxers, and 30mg of Valium... that was 25 pills I had swallowed. I then proceeded to drive to school and long story short, I’m surprised I’m not dead. I’m doing so much better now though.

Is skin picking an OCD behavior or self harm? I have done it for as long as I can remember I do it more when I am stressed. One major "trigger" for me is any kind of rough or dead skin. I can't have any rough dried out or dead skin without picking at it especially on my hands.

I've recently been diagnosed w/OCD due to skin picking & started taking a rx that's supposed to help stop the urge. My legs are so scarred that I won't wear shorts anymore & I started on my arms-much harder to hide. It's embarrassing when people ask about it-it's hard for me to lie so I usually answer "it's a thing I do"-a non-answer that lets them know the 'discussion' is over. I'm a 'counter' too. Driving by mailboxes I have to add up numbers & turn them into 1 number(such as 1476=1+4+7+6=18,8+1=9). Now I purposely avoid looking(much of the time)so I can enjoy scenery instead of adding. I still count the numbers of times I scrub dishes I clean, number of swipes I use to take mascara off, etc.,but I choose the number-usually 50,75 or 100,when I reach the number I stop. I don't fear anything bad will happen if I fail, even praying every night, but it makes me feel incomplete if I don't follow my schedule. Only day 2of my rx & I hope they help!

A lot of people don't know much about it and many people believe that it's self harm rather than that it is a compulsion.

I was diagnosed with this at the age of 12 but had symptoms since I was 10 when I look back at it. I would have to say a set of words in my head otherwise I’d fear that extremely bad things were going to happen to me, Like losing my intelligence. This along with adhd made it near impossible to focus on anything in school or even talk to people. It annoys me that ocd has got the rap of just being clean and nothing more. When in reality there’s so many different obsessions and compulsions you can experience. And not even to mention how extremely stressful it is to have this. I honestly wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

Some things I do now are that I have to clean and have everything organized, check if the door is locked, check on notes I take multiple times etc... I was diagnosed with OCD two eyars ago, but I've been surffering from it much longer. My obsession was that someone I care about would die if I didn't do everything I could to prevent it. So my compulsions got out of hand, they got so out of hand that my most dangerous compulsion was cutting myself 8 times a day to keep people alive. This obsession I believe was brought on by PTSD, and sometimes I feel they go hand in hand, at least for me.

I've recently starting writing in all capitals and if someone scribbles on my paper I freak out, like Defcon 1 crying hysterically and I know its irrational after the fact but during the action my world has ended. I also struggle with erasing things and writing and rewriting. Patterns get me a lot. In stores I have to jump from tile to tile and hold my breathe if I have to stop the pattern and it gets bad, I get stuck, and the struggles are real. And I clean a lot too, I clean and re clean and organize, I have no set number that I have noticed, just until I'm satisfied or my back hurts, whichever comes first. I think this ties into when I was younger I had a reading problem where I'd read a line then re read it cause I'd think I said something wrong idk thougg

Thank you for your help and kind words-Kati Morton. I am confused and frustrated and wanted to see if others might share some of the frustration being diagnosed with Chronic Refractory OCD-where after 40 years of treatment including SSRI's/meds/years of ERP/CBT/ACT/Hours of daily Meditation/Mindfulness practice/Psychiatric help from Top specialists/years of support group with No relief from 24/7 bed ridden anxiety/pain that brings me in such Inhumane Torment and Torture that it's hard to find enjoyment in anything or anyone. The obsessions are Primarily Pure O/non-typical where I mentally "Think through over and over to try to solve figure out how to prevent the bad thing from happening...where I am in such pain and grief trying to Ruminate that I can't ever get out of the "Dark Cloud of anxiety". I have been told by several Specialists of OCD, that the only thing to try is one of two types of brain surgery-DBS-Deep Brain Stimulation Therapy where they surgically implant Devices in the scalp and in the collar. I am not comfortable having this type of unproven-non FDA approved treatment and wonder if anyone else has tried it with any positive results. My twin brother(who has learned to manage his ocd and has tried endlessly to help me get out of such inhumane misery 24/7) tells me over and over that I am being "Sabotaged" by the illness that just because my obsessions are not in the books, that they are All the work of the disorder. I have been trying to "Work thru/figure/ruminate/solve" to prevent the bad thing from happening day and night-Every 10 seconds it just loops around, keeping me hostage in grief and pain. I know it's ridiculous to worry so much but I can't stop the constant worries/doubts and fears. For me, the ERP and years of keeping SUDS journals makes the Illness keep me in its Grips. I realize it is supposed to "Habituate" one to the Fear. I'm Super Positive "Go-lucky" Happy by nature...but can't seem to find Any relief on this Planet to be able to get free-even for 5 minutes of "Normal" existence of peace. I don't want any sympathy, but would be curious to know if having Brain surgery for this type of Chronic Refractory OCD has been at all helpful to anyone. Happy Holidays to All and God Bless. :)

I know for a fact that CBT therapy works on a very significant level. And to clarify, I am very certain that it works, because I myself have had multiple problems with OCD ever since I was young; and have always thought that the first course of action should be to try and assess my problem and go at it alone to vanquish it. That was outright the wrong type of thinking. I later on found out that trying to solve my crippling dilemma alone plus ignoring help from others whom have experience in this particular department was just hurting me even more. Things eventually changed when I was approached by a person whom had been through the same type of anguish as myself. He later informed me about CBT once he felt that I was ready for it. And I gotta say, ever since I started CBT Therapy, I feel so much better about myself in terms of my self esteem. Knowing that there are others that have the exact same OCD issues as myself does help, and that really makes a difference with all of my extensive personal mental issues. And though I’m not considered 100% cured of every mental ailment condensed within my brain, I am far better off than when I was without CBT. So if anyone out there is experiencing some sort of crippling OCD and does not necessarily know how to go about to finding effective medical/mental help, than I assure you, CBT is the right path to recovery. Good luck to all fighting the good fight out there, and happy recovery hunting.

When I was very little I'd spend hours everyday looking at the toys in my room to make sure they were in the right spot... No one could touch them, I wouldn't even play with them, they had to be exactly where they were supposed to be and I could just FEEL if they weren't and have multiple anxiety attacks, had stuff like that my whole entire childhood with organization and having patterns. Then that just started fading away I think... I mean, my room's a mess right this second and I don't care lol but when I was about 13 I started having VERY VERY intrusive thoughts and my mind would just obsess over something and I couldn't function until that thing was ''resolved'', it was usually school stuff back then.
About two years ago (I'm 20 now) I started having intrusive thoughts about sickness, I find a symptom and spend over 5 hours researching, watching videos, reading articles, emailing doctors, then call every single important person in my life (my mom, my boyfriend, my best friends) and tell them everything I found out and make them tell me their opinion on the matter (I say make because if they don't I'll just keep asking until they do). I've gone to so many doctors these past two years, I ask them to have me do exams and when everything comes back normal I ask again, and again, and again, and if they refuse I just look for another doctor. It feels like I can't get the thoughts out of my head so I keep looking for someone or something to make it stop, to give me the answers I was expecting. I have other types of intrusive thoughts but this is the worse one, I don't know what to do anymore, my health plan doesn't cover therapy and I feel like I'm dying just a little bit every day. It's the fucking worst, man

I was diagnosed with OCD when I was 7 years old, I had to start taking Prozac because I don't have enough serotonin in my brain. I'm a lot older now but I still really struggle and have to see a therapist once a month. When I was younger (it still happens every now and then) when my mind was triggered by something I lock my eyes on- or dart my eyes around the room, either noticing every detail or sticking to one problem. I'll start shaking, mumbling random stuff, tense up, and pick at my hands. Sometimes, when it gets worse then just a panic attack, I'll go into a full meltdown. I hope people actually get to understand that OCD isn't just about cleanliness and germs. I don't give a crap about that, it is just random stuff that my brain doesn't like. Half of the time, I don't even remember what happens when I have a meltdown. It's serious and not something that somebody should just say, "Ohh, yeah I have OCD lol" because you don't, and if you think you might, go to a therapist.

I don’t know if I have ocd or not because I’m really messy and unorganised but I have so many habits like how I can’t place my feet or foot in the midde of any object or area. For example if I’m walking past a radiator or something I can’t put my feet half way across the length of the radiator therefore I have to place my foot at one end of it. And it’s really annoying because it’s literally everything I walk past like walls door frames sofas cars and I have to try really hard not to step in the middle of it so I look really weird walking and people are starting to notice but I don’t want to say anything to my mates or family in case they find it funny. Hiding has been mostly isolating myself either before or after running away from something full of despair. As I matured and found that physically running away was damaging to others and myself my compulsion turned into wanting to die. I have since had many many intrusive ideas of how to commit suicide. I spent over 30mins in the one isle of the store trying to pick the right one. It also happens when grocery shopping or online shopping. Especially with the latter, I can spend HOURS looking for the right product. It has to be perfect. Its like I have a fear of picking the wrong one to the point where It become utterly frustrating and overwhelming sometimes.

I have OCD. I have symmetry OCD.
Can OCD be characterized as an extreme form of perfectionism where anything can lead to anxiety, fear, and distress? Could you be my friend? 🤗😘❤️Your charm is irresistible!!😁 You look energetic.💪 Now, the world can be a nasty crazy place out there, We cannot control what happens but we can use what happens. We have so much reserves of love and support inside us, if we can just remember that in our mind and move on.

I was diagnosed with OCD but now I’m wondering if it is OCPD instead. But a lot of it depends on the situation. My constant compulsion to check things several times is definitely something that gets annoying as well as recurrent thoughts about certain things. But then I actually enjoy certain things like choosing what color of chair to sit in or the order of which I do things. I also have an eating disorder and GAD so that can contribute to the anxiety but it’s interesting because certain rituals feel safe and others cause anxiety and just frustrate me.

Sounds like OCD. I have OCD and it can be both annoying and enjoyable/comforting. Whereas someone with OCPD affects more the people around them.

I think when I was younger I used to have a form of OCD, at the time I didn't know what it was so I never mentioned it to anyone because I thought it was weird. Mine used to be both mental obsessions and complusions. For example, if I used to think the phrase "I love my mum" with my mouth open then something really bad would happen and the only way I could reverse it would be to close my mouth and think to myself "daisy, daisy, daisy" over and over again, and the more times I said it the less likely it was that the bad thing would happen? I also used to have overwhelming thoughts and anxiety that I might be a lesbian (I'm not and in no way have anything against anyone who is, I was just a kid at the time, like 7/8) and I used to think it about it ALL the time and worry until I got sick to my stomach.... I kind of just grew out of it after some time though

I am not sure weather I have OCD or not but I don't like the number 4 and I would not do things four times and I also don't like 13 and 24. Also, when I accidentally hit something with an object, I will rub the area of the object that I hitted which is kind of like blending in when drawing.

I often find noone talks about intrusive thoughts that trigger mental complusions. How you have to do it more if you make a mistake. Noone talks about how you'll see people die or have a serious illness and the only way you feel you can stop it is repeating phrases. You're scared to stop as that one time something will happen something bad!

I don’t have an eating disorder or self harm I have OCD and I used to just ask questions like I ask the same question over and over and over and over for reassurance that someone couldn’t answer. Like will it rain? And then she’d say I don’t think so and I’d be like but it could, do you think it’ll rain...and on and on until I had a panick attack and a tantrum. I was ten or eleven.

It’s rough because I’ll tell my friends about my problems with OCD, and they’ll say “oh just do something to get your mind off it” or “well just stop thinking about it.” It is sooo annoying because we treat people with anxiety, depression, or other disorders like “it’s okay we can help you” or they understand that it doesn’t just go away. It annoys me that people don’t treat this like an actual mental disorder and don’t accept it. Can anyone else relate or is this just me?
