      Definitely, it comes down to a good psychiatrist and hospital, early diagnosis and being prescribed the right medications, support when you leave from family and doctors and some luck too! My brother has a mental health condition no problems now, and is a lecturer at a university also! I have a condition and have a librarian's qualification and am studying further in conservation and land management.

      @Iva.the.Southern.Appalachian 10 лет назад +47

      I hear voices from the outside that sound like real people talking to me but I also take spells where the voices sound like they are more in my head. Generally when in head it sounds like a ton of people talking and screaming at once. When outside my head it usually sounds like it's one or two. When inside my head it makes me feel like my brain is overheating or something and is much less tolerable for me at least.

    Kati, you never mwntioned the worst, most insidious symptom that schitzo-affective has: the sudden lack of wherewithal to do personal grooming, showering, self-care. Every single person I know with this illness has to continually fight this, & the medication never seems to help with particular symptom. It's horrible, having somwthin in your mind that takes away tge ability to take of oneself in this most basic of ways. & I find this is the hardest one to fight.. For example, for me, since I got this illness I hate to get wet & I am clautrophobic in the bath or shower: this makes something previously enjoyable into something hellish. I just don't want to get dressed & many days it is impossible & I don't kniw why. Plz address this in your next video, along with what to do about it.
    Thank you.

      Do you also hear voices commanding you to do things or not do things? How long have you had these symptoms? Can you explain more in detail what you're experiencing? I know your comment is 2 years, so excuse me if you've gotten medication and you've overcome them, but I'm still curious to know.

      karina⁴aug: you sound like you could be any of my children. Their dad same as yours, myself have been 🏷 labeled with those two diagnosis to name a few. My spouse engaged in Gaslighting me. Frequently took me to emergency rooms and exaggerated symptoms, lied and told them i was not safe for the children.
      I suffered at the hands of medical personnel who did not do proper diagnostic tests, over medicated me, justified extended psych ward stays as they changed medications just before my discharge (have great insurance). Three different therapist have suggested my behavioral health diagnosis may well have been due to spouse abuse. I never quite fit any of the categories, so they'd base it on what narc spouse told them. After extensive therapy sessions they would eventually decrease meds to nill and discharge me, but spouse didn't like that so he would find another reason to drop me off at the emergency room. Would not take them my medications, so they would prescribe again based on only his accounts. Back then i did not have a voice, due to the chronic abusive, chronic stress, chronic threats, Hypervigilance. Learned to sleep with one eye open. He pushed so hard to get them to recommend 'electroshock therapy' treatments. So evil.
      karina hope you consider attending NAMI support groups for family members of someone with a behavioral health diagnosis. Free via 'zoom' app.

    Hi there! Just wanted to say how happy and excited I am to have found your channel! I am a Child and Youth Care Practitioner student in my final year, completing a placement within a children's hospital inpatient psychiatry unit. I am being exposed to so many different mental health disorders, and I find it fascinating. As a new and young person in this field surrounded by "vets" that have been on the unit for longer than I have been ALIVE, I find myself mixing up DSM criteria and different diagnosis criteria. Your videos are such a simple way for me to refresh, and turn to for simple explanations. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge here. Your passion for mental health awareness is so inspiring- thank you for being you! Cheers, from Canada's capital!

I have a loved one who is very hesitant about professionals but they are worried for their mental health and have several schizophrenic relatives I want to either help them reassure themselves or strongly encourage seeking treatment but a lot of the research goes right into talking about extreme cases and symptoms.

    Hello Kati. First and foremost, I want to thank you for what you do. Your channel has help me a lot.
    About me. I am a 47 year old divorced male and I was recently diagnosed with 4 mental disorders:
    1. Bipolar Disorder
    2. Anxiety Disorder
    3. Schizoaffective Disorder
    4. Delusional Disorder
    Of course, due to mental disorders, I am 100% insecure, have zero confidence and no self esteem whatsoever. I am terrified of loneliness and I always will find ways (mostly unsuccessful) everyone or anyone to love me, respect me, admire me, casual encounters and etc. Sometimes all I need is a hug. I have felt alone all my life and I've lived alone most of my life. I seek isolation which is a place I feel safe and my delusions have been my companion. I am always sad and I carry a hole in my heart.
    My 10 year old son lives with his mom and although I can see him and take him anywhere and whenever I want, he is going through the mommy phase, so I don't see him a lot. How the hell I got married? God knows.
    I currently live in a state (FL) in which I have no.
    My family lives in southamerica and my asshole brother lives in New Jersey. I am not close at all with my mother's side of the family and my father is dead. He died of alcoholism.
    During the 9 years in which he was still alive, he was sober twice.
    In late 1981, I remember sitting in the back seat of a cab with my brother ready to JFK airport because we were permanently moving to southamerica. I remember my mom went into our house and upstairs to their room to say goodbye to my father, who was drunk.
    Neither my brother or myself said goodbye. I felt complete indifference. A couple of months after living in southamerica, my mom got a phone call from her girlfriend in New York to say the last time she saw my father, he was super thin, drunk and was dressed like a homeless person. I am 100% certain that he is dead and I do not care to know where he's buried. In 1986, my mom tried to kill herself by taking God knows how many Valiums. The reason? Her boyfriend (which later on would be stepfather) was hanging out a lot with an ex-girlfriend. I was 13 or 14 at the time.
    Today, I do talk to my mom (she lives in southamerica) once a month. I do not love her but I take her calls and listen to her boring stories and before the call ends, she tells me she loves me like ten times. It is annoying.
    I have no girlfriend (the last time I had sex was in 2013) and no friends. I started a new job 3 months ago and I am starting to think the company made a mistake in hiring me. I can retain anything and I feel so insecure and stupid when I am performing my job. My consistent delusions greatly affect my capacity to retain information and to apply it as well.
    I live a very, almost intolerable, lonely life. It is so bad that I have thought about taking myself out many times.
    I very am scared. I take the right meds but I am still looking for a therapist.
    No one has given me a hug for years. I have no one in my life to motivate me and to support me. I don't drugs and I don't drink
    So, when you have some time, can you please suggest a better path towards recovery? Thank you!

    My mother struggled with Schizoaffective Disorder for years before she passed away (to clarify, her death was completely unrelated) Growing up with her as my mother was... upsetting. She loved me and my brothers so much. Since I was the youngest, it seemed her paranoia focused mostly on me. I couldn't go out side on my own, I couldn't do a lot of things normal children could do. She put a security camera in my room and stayed up all night to watch me while I slept. She was convinced that there were people living in our attic and waiting for her to stop watching and take me away. I was horrified because I was only about 8 at the time. She thought there was a camera in our bathroom light. My father tried his best to get her the help she needed, but she was convinced he was cheating and paying for another woman to go on vacation to Aruba. She thought he couldn't be trusted. My father would be forced to wait until she made threats or got violent to call Mobile Mental Health. She would be put away in a mental institution for a week or two, where they would force her to take her medication. She would be fine for maybe a month and then she would convince herself that she was fine and needed no meds. Or that the meds were poison. That's when the cycle would start up again. I remember her crying to god and looking up at the ceiling. I remember her trying to tear her skin off of her face because she thought she was ugly. I remember her talking to people that weren't there. Now, as a 22 year old I truly hope I don't end up like my poor mother. I know it could be genetic and that terrifies me. I'm finally going to a doctor today because I have horrible anxiety and I hope it's not the beginning of Schizoaffective Disorder.

      Seriously don't worry about getting it.
      Sometimes when people start to believe they have something. Their body reacts. Example: when a woman truely believes she's pregnant. She may start have milk coming out their nipples.
      I personally once thought I was diabetic. I reacted to sugar just the way diabetics do. By collapsing on the ground. I'm not diabetic.
      I look after a schizophrenic. The person makes me anxious, and depressed. My doctor says to me "you are in a toxic environment around a schizophrenic. Make sure you break away regularly. Go for a walk. Sit outside. Have time to yourself."
      It sounds like your mother loves you. She may think she's actually protecting you. Tell her you know how to look after yourself now that you've grown up.

    Aren't hallucinations/delusions a symptom that's prevalent in bipolar, too? Especially during manic/mixed episodes. I mean, this is what my psychiatrist told me. How would they differentiate between those symptoms in bipolar disorder and schizoaffective?

    • @Iva.the.Southern.Appalachian
      @Iva.the.Southern.Appalachian 10 лет назад +26

      Those psychotic episodes in Bipolar only occur during mood extremes such as when very depressed or Manic. With Schizoaffective, the psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions are present when moods are NOT out of whack. (This is what my Psychiatrist told me.)

    • @jennykwalsh9743
      @jennykwalsh9743 4 года назад

      What if the psychotic symptoms come when you have mania, but then the anti psychotic tablets dampen the mania, so you end up with psychosis without the mood bit

    • @67afletcher
      @67afletcher 4 года назад +7

      You are absolutely correct, you can experience hallucinations when in a manic stage of Bipolar. This can be brought on by severe lack of sleep which can generate hallucinations even with people without Bipolar. The difference is with Schizoaffective disorder there is a mood component that needs to be treated and there is also a psychosis component that exists alongside the mood component that needs to be treated separately. With Bipolar D/O the hallucinations can usually be controlled by leveling out the mood and not allowing it to reach mania. This is how it has been described to me by a mental health specialist. I am a LMSW that works in mental health. I hope this helps. Alex F.

    My brother is Schizophrenic. He’s also learning disabled. I believe he may have had an eating disorder when he was younger, but I don’t remember if he was ever officially diagnosed with one or not. Needless to say, he’s had it kinda rough. Because of his diagnoses, he can’t really take care of himself. He can’t work nor can he drive. Plus, I don’t think he gets proper care. The mental health system where we live isn’t great and nobody really seems to care all that much. I wish there was something more we could do to help him.

    Thank you for the work you put into these videos. I've had my bipolar II diagnosis for a number of years and the medicines I take are effective. There have been three occasions, however - each distant from one another - where my level of frustration with something or someone grew past my usual capacity for containing it. In each instance schizophrenia symptoms surfaced as matters deteriorated and trailed off as order was restored. The last one of these ended a few days ago - good grief.
    My therapist of ten years (recently retired) prescribed Lamictal and Seroquel at my first visit for mood issues. These medicines brought relief to my aching head quickly. These medicines and ten years of talk therapy appointments brought me to a basic understanding of how reasonable people solve problems. I pass for reasonable most days because of his efforts and smarts.
    My scrapes with schizophrenia are very frightening and I need help, but finding a competent therapist is difficult. I had to give up on five before finding a long term solution, and it was only blind luck that I did. If you know of a therapist who can help me with this or a way to find one, could you put it on your website? I live in Olympia, WA. Thank you again for your hard work.

    I can imagine that it must be extremely hard to fight this mental illness, especially when you have paranoia and have delusions like "they want to harm me" or "I'm being spied"... So that way they have great problems going into therapy and changing their way of thinking... I've heard of some people who see people who are telling them to harm themselves or to stop therapy and I think it must be extremely hard to recover from schizophrenia...

    I was diagnosed with this almost a year ago and what I feel, now that I know that I'm mental, isn't quite comfortable. Sometimes I am very happy and idc about it but most of the time I'm scared of people harassing me about it. Seldom I think of suicide because all I can think is that people think and talk shit about me and my behaviour. When I try to be honest with them they don't understand me and they think I'm fucking crazy. I don't want to be that way. I want people to like me, to know that I have battles with my own self. And it's hard. Damn, it's hard.

I dont think everyone is always aware of how many people got something not right in their head somewhere..
      I myself have had delusions at times. Had depressed feelings, suicidal feelings/thoughts... I think all of these are just a product of your social needs, basic needs, family and environmental factors. N past experiences...
      I try to just rationalise things as much as possible...

      The Abnormal what's schizoid?

    • @mikebaker2436
      @mikebaker2436 7 лет назад +2

      The easiest way to explain the general difference is that Schizotypal is a personality disorder that features sympotms like Schizophrenia's positive list and Schizoid is a PD that features symptoms like Schizophrenia's negative list. They are all in the same cluster of illnesses but are not the same and have different causes. Schizophrenia in the family has a higher risk of predisposition for Schizotypal or Schizoid disorders.

    • @mikebaker2436
      @mikebaker2436 7 лет назад +3

      A big challenge for a Schizotypal would be paranoia and anxiety... where Schizoids suffer from varying degrees of flat affect, isolation, and emotional blinding.

I have trouble know what are symptoms and what is real. I have racing thoughts and hear voices a lot. I don't have visual hallucinations very much anymore. I feel useless and that I shouldn't be here. My antipsychotic caused me to gain weight so fast that I have fatty liver now and borderline diabetes, but the Doctor's will never admit to that because I'm poor and on disability and they want to protect the pharmaceutical companies from lawsuits. Its not that extreme today. I eat litium, lamictal and queatiapine etc (since i was 14) i eat around 350 mg Daily antipsychotic and it works fine. Im fine but I still have hallucinations everyday.. One thing you didn't mention about med's is that they have come out with a new generation of anti-psychotics that are much milder than the old generation. They refer to the new generation as "atypical" anti-psychotics and the old generation as "typical" anti-psychotics. The typical anti-psychotics are often hard to tolerate, and the atypical are usually much easier to tolerate.

    I have schizoaffective bipolar type and I think my mom knew this for a while. Before I was diagnosed even. I think she was scared to hear the diagnoses. Nobody believes I have this disorder though. It's really rough living with this disorder. I stop taking care of myself and I lose jobs. This video had really helped me understand what is going on in my brain. Thank you so much Kati!!!

    Good video I have learned so much I do not have this disorder but my ex girlfriend has it and I have learned so much. I have anxiety and I used to put myself down if I couldn't figure out a way to ease her burden. I tried to deduce what solutions I could have come up with to take the stress off her shoulders. She was often misunderstood and misjudged. As an introverted, socially ackward young man I tried my best to help her and felt really depressed when she left. She was intelligent and even helped me out when I felt overwhelmed or I assumed someone was judging her and looking at her as if she were crazy, when in fact they had no idea what she has to deal with daily. I try to view situations objectively and approach problems with logic. She was the first female( that was not family) to show me compassion, she understood my troubles and I tried to take on hers but sometimes I feel as if I failed her she was my only friend, my first true love. She even encouraged me to trust people more instead of avoiding them. I am watching these videos to help people who suffer from mental disorders as her and I do. Too often are disabled people misunderstood when all they may need is someone to tell them that everything will be okay. Instead of judging each other we should support one another. Paying it forward with kindness.

    I'm diagnosed as Bipolar with psychotic features, but I think I'm schizoaffective. Next semester is coming up I'm so afraid I will not do well in class because of what is going on. My psychiatrist didn't change my meds. After my last hospital stay they added lamictal to my Seroquel and Wellbutrin. it seemed to work well until I quit smoking.

    • @hope5350
      @hope5350 7 лет назад

      I also had a slip up and smoked a cigarette and my episode almost immediately after seemed to subside a little bit. I made an appointment with my therapist. it's definitely difficult to put sentences together like you said Katie, but I'm not sure if it's the medication.

      After ending up in the hospital I was put on Lamictal and it worked well. I quit smoking a year after I started Lamicital, and it went great. Word of advice - don't quit smoking until you figure out your medication. When you change meds and quit smoking at the same time it can be impossible to tell what is causing what and what is a withdraw symptom and what is a medicine side effect

      +Hope Sherman Hi Hope, I'm not a professional but I saw your comments and didn't want you to feel alone. I think you need to speak to your doctor again, express your concerns and tell them what has been going on recently. Perhaps nicotine patches or gum might be a good idea to ween you off smoking? If you are worried you might not be able to express yourself to your doctor maybe you could write things down at a time when you're feeling a little better so you can take your time and get your ideas across properly. Does your school know about your struggles? They might be able to help. I wish you the best in your studies :)

      +MR STR Yes I think you're correct. My psychiatrist told me that quitting smoking can make my symptoms more inflamed. Boy was he right. He upped my dosage of lamictal significantly, but I just came out of a minor depressive episode (pretty much crawled out of it) and I'm laying down for now to see how I feel in a while. I have a nicotine patch on right now. I also think I should've waited to quit. My hospital stay was in April and they've been tweaking my medication since then. I did quit somewhat suddenly - I had an emergency wisdom tooth removal and have to get the rest of them out next week. My mood is all over the place. I could typically feel when things were going to go south and prepare myself for what I was going to go through. Today hit me out of fucking no where. I have therapy on Thursday evening. I'm able to articulate myself more clearly since the med change. My brain and my thoughts are still a bit fuzzy and jumbled. Thank you for your comment! I was thinking the same thing and I wasn't sure if it was because I wanted to smoke so badly.

    I have really strong delusions and my "hallucinations" reinforce my delusions. Like I am sure that people talk about/to me in movies and music. I experience it. So I think it is true. I mean, it is like I hallucinate through people. I have had normal hallucinations too, seeing and hearing things others don't. But most of it is things people are doing for real and I KNOW it is about or to or at me. I am not sure if they know they are doing it or if a spirit is doing it through them. Or if my illness somehow controls reality a little.

      Get your cousin admitted to hospital. Just by calling an ambulance. I had to this. Don't forget to notify the emergency dispatchers, that your cousin may get violent. The police may need to assist ambulance crew.
      Remember taking such extreme measures is important. You're showing everyone your serious. You need to protect the person from themself, and protect other people. If you don't do it, nobody will.
      I'm on your side. You can show people my comment. Show them that a person supports, and believes in you.

    My little sister has this and she has zero quality of life!!! I think she has been let go without medication for far to long. Our town does not have help for mental health and we do the best we know how to! My question is that if they are left to long without medication and the ridges are too deep, can that cause her to never be able to come back fully from this?? i feel as though my sister will never ever have any kind of a normal life she is just to sick! have you heard of cases of people who never take their meds and what happens to them if that is the case? Thank you for these videos...

      Jesse Golden I'd like to know this too as a family member had schizophrenia but she never took meds. She doesn't say hi to people when they come in the room etc. I'm not sure what happens but I think they need the medicine. She doesn't have a quality life she's 40 sits in her room all day doing spiritual stuff RUclips etc. only comes out to make food then back to her own.

      i have read that schizo and bipolar are degenerative if left untreated, i think that is what this relates to

    • @Some-person-dot-dot-dot
      @Some-person-dot-dot-dot 4 года назад

      You want to know what happens when left untreated? The person in question either kills someone or kills themself. Leaving them untreated isn't what accelerates this though. It's when you half-heartedly treat them. ie. giving them an injection one week, but then not giving them follow up injections for like 2 weeks. Or making them take prescription pills for 1 month, but then allowing them to cold turkey it for the next month. What this does is allow the schizophrenic to build up a resistance to the medication. It will also damage them alot more in the long run. You must either throw down the cash and treat them like you love them even if it is financially draining. Or you leave them be (for a time [like 1 year max]) then treat them once your financial situation is better. If you decide that you are not going to treat them at all and allow their minds to slowly rot over a vast period of time then they eventually commit homicide or suicide. They will hurt you or themselves in a very fatal manner. Hopefully, this answers your question.
