Comet = Climate change
Leo is a moron
I feel like Paul Rudd would have made more sense than Decaprio
Republican party Strongly against policies to prevent climate change
“He’s a three star general. He works at the pentagon. Why would he charge us for free snacks?” Omg! That was hilarious
Agree. The funniest running gag of the whole movie
That's really the only part that I though was extremely funny.
That damn gag got me crackin
"Is like he knew, eventually, that i was gonna find out that the snack were free"
Yep!
I believe the comet wasn't an allegory to covid, but to climate change. Hence DiCaprio's wanting to play a role in the movie. Though covid was later brought in to it, as some people showed just how stupid they could be about that which underlined how terrible they would be if a comet really did come hurtling towards us.
Movies take 3 years to develop very hard to say that it was an allegory for covid, but it’s so true that people won’t be able to realize that
Totally agree! I definitely felt like it was an allegory for climate change, especially in regards to the way BASH intervened in the 3rd act.
I mean it’s both, really. Both climate change and COVID are threats that have politics and corporations ignoring science when it doesn’t serve them well. COVID just came along and reinforced the general premise of the film.
Covid is more of a proove that governments across the world have lost their shit.
@@BlackCat.Designs I think COVID proved the incompatibility between “freedom” and a pandemic.
I totally disagree about Lionardo Dicaprio being miscast. I think its quite difficult for critics to give Leo Dicaprio cookies because he's just a very good actor whose fatal flaw is that he's totally inaccessible as a person. He's a huge star who gives very little of himself to the public. Critics and audiences have a difficult time accepting that about him and tend to attach that discomfort to his performances.
He's perfect on this role.
I don't find DiCaprio particularly convincing in any role he's done, except Gilbert Grape, Basketball Diaries and Django. Outside of those three, he's distracting similarly to how Ben Affleck is always distracting.
agreed...he was perfect in this role...nailed it actually
💯
I loved him in this part
The movie is genius. The score is a direct reflection of what the film was not trying to say but absolutely 100% nailed.
DiCaprio wanted in the role because of his ACTUAL REAL WORLD CLIMATE ACTIVISM THAT IS A HUGE PART OF THE MOVIE
You're 100% right, but Bateman would of been better just saying
I was at a Q&A with Cast and Adam McKay and was shocked to hear that this movie actually had nothing to do with Covid. The script and cast were in the can and ready to shoot right before the pandemic, really a great movie!
It's pretty obvious that it's about climate change. Governments and corporates play a big role in this narrative.
Yeah not sure where the Covid take is coming from. Most what I read/heard/saw was climate change.
It's about both climate change and COVID. It was written before COVID, but after the pandemic started the script was adjusted to include it.
@@barmyflight yep, exactly what i thought
it was obvious to me from the trailer and the fact the Leo is in this movie, that it’s about the global warming and how the governments aren’t doing anything.
I felt like the Comet was definitely a metaphor for Climate Change not Covid, everyone know Covid is real, but so many people dismiss climate change until it’s beneficial for them.
"Everyone knows COVID is real"... Do they though?
Climate change is not the same as a comet
@@naromngin do you know metaphor??
Plus, Covid has an overall 99.4% survival rate. Pretty stupid to equate a comet that will destroy the world to having a bad flu.
Stupid comment
Well I think DiCaprio was perfect this role and I love when he's out of his comfort zone
It kind of just read like a cringe impersonation of Michael Shannon in knives out
@@maxhalle-podell6635 it didn’t at all though
I just finished watching it. I agree with you.
He's playing a scientist who just happens to be photogenic so is good for the Medias Spin machine. Straight out of central casting as it were.
He doesnt have a comfort zone lol, hes done everything excellent
I loved the movie , it was scarily realistic tho , it’s like a parody of our current world but also grounded enough to hit too close to home , but it was a really fun to watch movie
.Definitely not a realistic movie. It's as subtle as a car crash and edited awfully. not a great film
@@Eric-pf7zl it was realistic in the sense of how people would actually behave in this situation
@@Tarikkb I get what your saying but I just think it was too cartoonish. But anyway I’m happy you enjoyed it!
@@Eric-pf7zl yea i agree it was a bit over the top , I think that’s cuz they were doing a parody , kind of like a commentary parody , to each is own
Honestly if you think this movie was close enough to reality to even be considered a parody then you are an example of the problem the movie is trying to comment on. But that means you're also included with the creators of the movie. It's one thing to have an issue with climate change but a whole other to be so divorced from reality that you think this movie has any value in it's commentary.
Man, I gotta say that DiCaprio pleasantly surprised me throughout the film. We all know he can act, but I felt like as the movie kept going he continued to improve. The final line “we really had everything” really struck a chord with me.
I enjoyed this movie in a way I did not anticipate that I would ! It’s a different type of enjoyable - hard to explain!
agreed
It's called guilty enjoyment. The movie is bad.
@@Wolfgangus_Theophilus No I don’t think the movie was bad at all
My favorite scene in the movie is the celebrity who wears a pin with 2 arrows symbolizing both the justlookup and dontlookup movements because "hes' tired of the politics". The world is full of enlightened centrists like this.
It’s really not mirroring COVID but climate change they’ve discussed this a lot making the film
Well, I think it works both ways
It's both. They changed the script after the pandemic started to reflect both climate change and COVID.
@@ernegeo5584 I don’t see how anyone really sees Covid in this. I mean maybe but also you can literally replace the comet with climate change and it be the exact same movie
I feel if Leo is in it, it has to be about climate change
I don't trust any message Leonardo has on Climate Change while he is flying around on his Private Jet! Lol
Add Chalamet to the list of supporting standouts. He was hilarious and moving in a brief yet impactful role.
Heck yeah. His last scene …feels
Chalamet is the best acting talent in the game IMO
I heard the script was written pre-pandemic. So seeing how some things became true is frightening. Loved the movie.
The script was written before COVID. It was about global warming. But the funny thing is COVID came along and reconfirmed the predicted behaviour in this movie. Like, nothing made the point about this movie better than the current pandemic we're in.
I don’t think Leo was miscast. Just because men generally look younger doesn’t make him any less believable.
He is just TOO famous and mega superstar for me to buy him as this down to earth, nerdy, nose in a book professor. Not any fault of his, but merely that his star power does the role a disservice. IMO
Just watched the film and at first i agreed with Graces opinion on Leo but by the end I thought he really suited the character and gave a great performance
It's not about Covid Grace, I think it's about climate change! And your review shows how hard it is to keep the focus on global warming and listen to the scientists, so I guess this movie is right:D
lol
Absolutely
It’s not really about COVID or climate change. It’s both and everything. We have become such a self absorbed society. When a crisis comes along we don’t join together to fight it. We are only out for ourselves. We are not interested in truth or the betterment of mankind. We just want the likes. How much money and attention we can get
Leo literally explained in a video how it relates to climate change lol
I think, it can be climate change, it can be Covid, it can be war, it can be anything that affects people's lives exponentialy, like a social and cultural crisis.
The ending act had me absolutely terrified and mesmerized. I loved the movie
I watched Don’t Look Up in cinemas and absolutely adored it! Definitely would recommend to everyone 🥰
That's funny, I did that too... And It's probably the worst movie of the year :)
how did you watch a netflix movie in theaters?
@@KptnHaddock_ are you one of them? 🤭🤣🤣🤣
@@KptnHaddock_ seems like you were unable to understand the true message of this movie.
I think I got the point of the Movie. And I find it's heart to be somewhat in the right place. However McKays ham-fisted attempt on social criticism is nothing but smug and elitist and it made me cringe more than it made me laugh... Also, that thing is about 60 minutes too long which doesn't help :)
What’s with the swipe at “mean” John Oliver? That man is an absolute delight!
Really excited for this movie, the trailer got my attention, this review solidified my expectations for this movie! Thanks for the review!
Don't Look Up is one of the best films of the year. I cannot fathom how you could give it a rotten score unless you have a specifically biased agenda to the message and you are taking it personally.
Even if it's not your taste, the execution of the film along with the eerily and tragically accurate depictions of modern society should be enough to give it a fresh score, even if you don't love the film.
The movie was review bombed by right wingers
Great film. Incredibly clever and incredibly on the nose with todays society and culture. I was very impressed with Mckays film and especially Lawrence who I like but is hit and miss for me. I also liked Dicaprio and didn’t think him miss cast.
Clever? It was childishly on the nose. Picking low hanging fruit is easy, not clever. Most of McKay’s targets are strawmen. A bit of restraint would have made it both funnier and more poignant.
@@vaporwave4880: to quote Kenode. “would it?” People don’t like so blatantly being called out on their rubbish when frankly that’s exactly what wants doing. Subtlety is a overrated trait
@@Rockstar-bq5fm it all depends what the directors intentions are. If he wants people to think and change, then a bit of subtlety might be needed. If he just wants to insult as many people as possible then this was the correct approach. But it just reduces his film to a rant.
@@vaporwave4880: nobody Is changing their ways over a film, no one ever has. That’s optimism at its most naive.
Films of the type are trying to put forward the creators feelings and message and fish a response and McKay doesn’t pussyfoot around with his film. You call it a rant, many other people would say it’s exactly what needs saying
I absolutely loved this movie and I can't believe people are saying it's too long and not funny...
I loved DiCaprio, I try not to overanalyze... It was almost funny at a Spinal Tap level
Holy shit Tom Hanks as Dr. Mindy would be absolutely perfect!!!! I feel like it would have grounded the whole movie.
The comet isn't covid , it was written before covid , the comet is a metaphor for climate change according to the writers and cast.
I thought de Caprio was really good in that role he seemed perfect in this role
Americans seem to feel this is really dark it doesn't feel dark just truthful
What is covid?
Genius movie. People don’t like to think about bad things happening to us, easier to ignore it and pretend nothing is happening.
If this film came out 10 - 15 years ago, it would have a higher critical score. People are just snowflakes, people can’t take a joke anymore and that’s sad. Everyone just get offended these days. Just laugh and enjoy your self.
this flim is actually quite depressing and it is just too real for some people to laugh
I didn't see Leo miscast at all in this, thought he was phenominal and played an astronomer incredibly accurate. Even real life astronomers are praising his performance.
That comment about the eagle and the turkey made me laugh out loud . Especially when you realized they identified as the turkey 😭
"Who voluntarily identifies as a turkey?!?!" made me lose it hahaha
Just based on the chapter time titles, I'm surprised by DiCaprio. He's being praised.
Lawrence is perfect for the role and DiCaprio is good too.
DiCaprio ain't miscast, I think Grace is losing her mind. 😵
DiCaprio worked just fine for me in the role. It was a nice change of pace for him. Definitely different.
Spot on Grace, great review on a great film. Good to see McKay "Bash" everyone. Film of the year? Maybe. Comet=Covid? Maybe not so much, more like all pending global disasters. Honored to be part of this film, grateful my scene and lines remained. I attended a private screening of DLU, well sort of, I was the only one in the theater. Screen credit= golden.
I look forward to seeing you as the Secretary of the Interior! Well done!
@@AbcDef-ww2gy Thank you, I had a great time working this film. The 8 days of sequester was well worth it.
@@robertlevesque45 You'll be part of a Best Picture nominee soon, I'm sure. The film already made the AFI Top Ten and the NBR Top Ten, and I hear many Academy voters love it too. Fingers crossed!
I found the last 20 or 25 minutes once the comet was visible from the naked eye to was just haunting and beautiful. It really made this movie more than just a dark comedy
I really liked the movie. It kept me engaged through out the film. Great cast and unexpected ending. Also really hilarious.
Also really dumb
That's Mark Rylance!? Wow, didn't recognize him. Fascinating. Cannot wait to see this.
Grace got me with the Eagle & Turkey segment 😂🙌🏼 hilarious and true
Always seem to align with your opinions with some of these movies.. I still watch everything anyway, but I hate when the scores give me a feeling I won’t like it. Thanks Grace.. keep being awesome 😎
THE PERFECT BIRTHDAY PRESENT THANKS FOR POSTING SO FAST GRACE AAAAA!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DYLAN!! :)
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The ending had a lot of heart. I was impressed.
The movie is about The Scientific Truth and how our societies have "evolved" to discredit it, because we became superficial.
The way Jennifer’s character looks at Leo’s at the end was SO good, I couldn’t believe what was happening. Hell I think she couldn’t believe what was happening! The fact that it all started with them in class… WOW.
I have a love/hate relationship with this movie😂 the people infuriate me but it’s directing is phenomenal
The way she tried to make small talk but she just couldn't
@@alphagamer9505 It was a very chilling moment 🥴
Amazing review as always, Grace! Gonna watch it thanks to your review
Grace nobody takes RT seriously 😂
Dicaprio doesn't look like a full grow adult? The man has a beard and crows feet 😂
I was really impressed with the cast, especially Cate Blanchett. I really did not recognize her. I really like the movie too. I did not expect anything going in, but I ended up enjoying it.
Definitely interested in seeing this (right after West Side Story). It's a shame that some people are already discussing it negatively -- without even having seen it, mind you -- based on what I assume are their own biases.
It's definitely the people who can't handle holding a mirror up to themselves like she said at the top of the video. Most people who didn't enjoy this movie either feel attacked by it or aren't self aware enough to understand the jokes.
@@stacie1595 well said.
@@stacie1595 or just don’t like it. Assuming the only way you don’t like it is a slight on the watcher is pretty smug
Isn’t the comet supposed to be a commentary about Climate Change and NOT Covid?
Both. They changed the script after the pandemic started to reflect both climate change and COVID.
Hi Grace, im glad u liked it as i too was excited for this, it was on my top 10 most anticipated list but after these reviews. There is nothing worse then people that take themselves to seriously, its comedy, lighten up. I also loved the Turkey 🦃 joke, how could u not laugh! am a fan of Adam McKay, Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio so i will at least get something out of this movie..i will definitely watch on St.Stephens day on the Flix...and maybe Encanto too on the +..Thanks for giving us ur interpretation of the films criticisms, it has got me back on the hype train for this...
I can’t believe how much I missed seeing Jennifer Lawrence on the big screen!
This is a great review. I look forward to seeing this. I actually have no problem seeing DiCaprio as Professor and can’t picture him as overly attractive to the average Joe.
The dinner scene really hit me hard. So human and true.
It could also be a metaphor for the climate crisis.
That's what it is meant to be. The COVID read of it is the secondary one
This movie was more about America from the politics to the media. It is the Doctor Strange Love for the modern day. I heard a lot of Americans claim this movie is depressing. I found it hilariously accurate about how fucked up America is.
Maybe the reworking of the script was to play up the climate change allegory more, as that's an issue Dicaprio's been focusing on for quite some time.
Thanks for the review Grace. Much ❤ as always
Grace!!! Do you think that Netflix might pivot to pushing Tick Tick Boom as their number 1 awards contender given the more positive reviews and press from it?
No way, this is much better
Netflix could do both
Netflix will do The Power of the Dog first, Don't Look Up second, tick tick Boom third. The first two will be stronger with the Academy voters.
I didn’t enjoy tick tick boom. Haven’t seen this yet but I’m hoping it’ll be better 😬
Yeah this film is referencing climate change specifically (prob main reason Dicaprio did the film) not Covid. But it can be applied to a lot of things.
Really looking forward to this one. The humour sounds like its going to be spot on for me, bonus!
RT score be damned. I'm completing my 2021 Timothée Trifecta either way. (although I'm really not a fan of Jonah Hill's improv in the trailer)
The movie was fuckin great! I just watched it and man… it leaves you feeling “feeling” when you walk away from it at the end.
Just watched it!!! LOVED IT, watched it Christmas Eve with my family. It was great! Thanks for your review
So happy you liked Jennifer Lawrence. I love her and support her since Hunger Games. Watching for sure.
Adam McKay also has Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty next March on HBO Max. I hear the Buss family are angered by it. The teaser looks like Lakers meets Boogie Nights.
The reviews are so mixed for this one, I was hoping it would be a best picture contender... But maybe it is, Vice got ok reviews and it did get a best picture nomination.
I know a world wide situation is being parodied, but here is Costa Rica people are loving this film, and a prominent film critic did confront an American review directly by saying it's the new Dr. Strangelove.
Eagle and the turkey got me. That was hilarious and so very true. I definitely identify as an eagle (some times I am a turkey but that's to myself) and love Adam McKay. The Big Short is still in my top 10 of all time, and I will always rewatch the Anchorman movies. I've also been waiting for a movie to come along with Jennifer Lawrence in it that would become her big film for me. I have always liked her but never overly connected with any of her roles and based on the trailers I have very high hopes for this role.
2:20 I also find it weird how often people 'feel attacked', get offended or consider themsleves the turkey in these silly little sayings. I personally don't consider myself either when I hear stuff like this. I just think about it at another time.
Great video as always! I loved this movie!
i’ve been SO excited for this movie as a major Jlaw fan so i’m really glad to hear you liked her in this role.
So u gonna turn a blind eye to her and Harvey Weinstein?
@@blue-phoenix115 Yes, because that's nonsense.
@@AbcDef-ww2gy Then why she haven’t had a single movie the exact time Weinstein got in trouble? Did you not see all the videos of her praising and sucking up to Weinstein, going as far as calling him god?
@@blue-phoenix115 Learn to speak properly. Also, learn some logic. You idiot, everybody in Hollywood praised Weinstein before they knew about his crimes, because he was one of the most successful film producers working, making many great Oscar-winning films.
@@AbcDef-ww2gy 👈🏻 Defending a serial rapist. Also, you can’t/too scared answer why Jennifer Lawrence didn’t have a single movie starting exactly the time Weinstein was exposed.
Also a lot of actors knew about Weinstein and said nothing. You’re pathetic for defending these Hollywood degenerates.
Loved this film. It really is what and how the entire world would react to a catastrophic event if it were to ever happen. It is unfortunate but its the truth. I loved the comedy and i would disagree that Leo was miscast. If you watch enough astronomers talk, he nailed it lol. He was one of the stand outs of the film for me but the entire cast was phenomenal. Also, I believe the comet was in reference to climate change instead of covid.
Grace "Maybe you want a dark christmas" 😂😂😂
The eagle analogy perfectly defines this movie. very well put. 👏👏
that eagle joke is such a good analogy
Wholeheartedly disagree with you on DiCaprio being miscast.
For a film that immediately requires suspension of disbelief, I found the depth of his angst the fuel that kept this prophetic tale from disintegrating upon entry.
I love dark comedies.. Excited to be able to watch Don't Look Up. Great Review!
I loved it, it was a beautiful movie, at the same time I think it can easily chop down like 30 minutes and be even better but I liked it nonthless. I will give it a solid 7 or 8.I was expecting it to be bad..like really bad but it was great. The actors were splendid.
yea same here i had low expectations i was just looking for some laughs but man the story the acting it really hooks you and you keep wanting to find out whats gonna hapen next
it was a really good movie
I loved it! Good point when you said maybe the people who hate it just don't want a mirror held up to themselves. It was indeed, very, very meta.
Love your reviews
The movie was written as an allegory for climate change
Jason Bateman would have been great! I loved how jenn Lawrence couldn’t get over the general thief lol
That was a great analogy. Im gonna use that story from now on thank u. 👍🏿👊🏿😁
I love how they named the comet after Jennifer Lawrence’s character Kate Dibiasky, which led to Meryl Streep’s character pointing to Leo and saying “He will help us destroy our common enemy Dibiasky!” 😂🤣
Just saw this today! Very good film, and while I don’t agree 100% with your comments on Leo DiCaprio, I do agree he felt most out of place, but I overall didn’t mind it.
This film literally made me laugh out loud and also secretly made me sick to my stomach with the “the way things are” commentary. I think this is a must watch! People need to see this and know this is truly the way things are.
most of the time when you see the critics giving a low score it is probably a great film
I am super excited to check this movie out…thanks, Grace! ❤️❤️❤️
DiCaprio miscasted? Never thought id hear those words
When Rylance first popped up, it reminded me of his performance in Ready Player One, but there were some strong differences as the movie went on. He was great
I disagree with Grace a lot, maybe 50% of the time, which is great. We are in agreement here.
This review may get me to renew my Netflix subscription.
Not a movie I’ll see in theaters but I can’t wait to see it on Netflix 😜
Nailed it! This review was right on the mark.
I gave up on 98% of movie reviewers 15-20 years ago, as they offer no decent information or objective judgement. Reading them is a waste of time you can’t get back. NOT YOU GRACE! 😘
Amazing movie , great cast 5⭐ from me , mega fans will not enjoy it though
In that still, next to you, lovely lady, D. scream's "I'm a '90's t.v. professor."
I love movies that make me feel new things and this one is the first movie I got so frustrated with, I stopped watching and I love it for it. It's weird, but I admire the fact I felt as frustrated as some horror movies can make me scared.
I'm going to finish it later, lol.
