    The messed up part is, all of the survivors are older people beyond their child bearing years. Even if they survive the bronterocs, they won't be able to perpetuate the human species. So the entire escape plan was an exercise in narcissism, not survival.

      This is another part that mirrors reality. Billionaires here on this planet put tonnes of money into luxury bunkers so they can survive potential global disasters. The family that owns Wlamart has a huge one hey can live in with a bunch of people for something like 2 years.
      This kind of shows how rediculous it is though. Here, in this world, their billions of dollars give them a lifestyle where everyone does what they tell them and they have access to anything they want. So, while they have a shelter to survive in, they won't be billionaires when they come back out. Billionaires who own lots of stuff only exist as long as the society they've dominated exists.
      So, when they come out of their luxury bunkers, they'll regular people having to survive in a harsh world, with none of the skills necessary to do so.
      So, like as in the show, these people are fairly useless and probably the worst people ever to have any good chance of surviving. Most likely, all those people died pretty horrific deaths after not too much time.
      It's probably best to keep it to the rediculous joke it comes across as.

    I've watched a few reactions to this movie that have been like, "Yeah, people are dumb" one second and then "but I agree, she needs to calm down and he should be more positive, no one wants to hear that depressing stuff." And they've frustrated me to no end, because *that's the whole fucking problem the movie is trying to highlight.*
    Seeing Madison go through the same gamut of thoughts and emotions (and anxieties) that I did while watching this film is strangely comforting, because it gives me hope that not everyone is in the category of egotistical morons it portrays. So thank you both for being awesome and not dangerous idiots 💗
    PSA to anyone reading: If you don't know enough science to understand why evidence, math, and peer review are so important to determining truth, then please, for all our sake, *trust the experts who do* instead of media personalities, business people, and politicians (and random people online). This movie was so good. It's a comedy, but it's also a starkly realistic satire of the world we live in. Replace the comet with Covid or Climate Change, and it's practically a documentary. These are all the things we've lived with over the last few years. The harsh realities of the world. Selfish world leaders trying to hush it up and using the media to distract people from the problems. Peoples desire to ignore the issue by not looking at it. Those so desperate to politicise and ignore the issue they create alternate realities to live in.
    I think that's the real power if this movie and why it was able to get so many big stars to play in it.

    As a climate activist this film was so frustrating to watch. For those who don't know, this film - while it had it's numerous topics of commentary - is first and foremost one about the climate crisis and how our leaders both in industry and politics are treating it. The last line on the film, well, before the credits roll and have an after credits scene - is for me I think the absolute most devastating of any of the lines. Leo says, "We really had everything didn't we." It's just so true.
    Our species invented fire, tools, the wheel, medicine, electricity, electronics, music, art... And yet we are letting the life on our planet suffocate.. and starve.. and drown.. and burn.. And we as citizens feel either too afraid - or too powerless to do what is necessary to bring change. To occupy the streets. To occupy business. To engage in civil disobedience and get arrested. To stop going to work and to tell others they should stop going to work. To shut down our towns and our cities. We should be inspiring employees of supermarkets and distribution centers to not go to work, and then go to these businesses where no one is working and take what we rightfully shouldn't have to pay for and force these bullion dollar companies to take huge losses if they refuse to accept their responsibilities and be held accountable.
    This decade, 2020-2030.. really looks like it might be our last chance to get behind this thing to try and divert ourselves from a future if catastrophic pain and suffering. We not just have the tools to change how we do things to reduce emissions and eliminate them, but we have the tools we need to replant and repair a lot of the natural world we have destroyed. We also have a chance to halting what warming has already been set in, by taking carbon out of the atmosphere using emerging carbon capture technology. We have to build renewable infrastructure, sequester carbon from the atmosphere, stop cutting down and burning trees, eliminate fast food and end cruel and inhumane factory farms and drastically reduce the amount of pigs and cows we slaughter needlessly that helps fuel the global epidemic of obesity, grow local gardens in our cities and towns for our citizens, stop our endless consumption of energy and "things", stop using precious materials to create new phones every goddamn year that most of the time actually function worse and for less time than the previous models, stop building a new car model every fucking year that isn't safer or more efficient, stop wasting so much goddamn food while half the planet starves, and replant the natural world.
    But most importantly, in order to do any of these things on a scale never before seen in the history of humankind.. we have to cultivate empathy and a deep compassion for each other. We have to get to a place where we care about the well being of someone we've never met, whose face we've never seen, who lives on the other side of the planet. We are all in this together. We can do this. We have to. If we don't - it is our children who will have to answer for our inaction. It was humbling and touching to hear you talk about how utterly afraid you would be in the situation depicted in the film. I have hyper empathy disorder, so connecting with people's emotions - especially their negative ones is quite easy for me, albeit often debilitating. Now i don't know either of you, but I care deeply about your existence on this Earth, and you seem like caring and compassionate and genuine human beings and just to think about you or anyone in these comments or anyone else having to live through such a situation of unimaginable terror and despair and suffering - it makes me feel something I genuinely cannot put into words, but I know it's something I would never wish on any living thing. We have the power to change things - we just have to find the courage to stand up for one another, no matter our differences, and unite against greed, corruption, hatred, fear, and indifference..

    The comet impacts into chilean coast. I'm from Chile. A scene that specially shocked me was the native american rite in the end of the world. I believe he's mapuche by the clothes. Maybe I'm wrong, but at least his clothes are native andean. These people, the mapuche, have fought all their history to keep their land and stop the destruction of the ecosystem. They never surrended to the spanish crown, they never surrended to the chilean goverment either. Many are still fighting. Yes, I know ecology + native american is a cliché, but for the mapuche the land is the most important aspect of their culture, even their name means people (che) of the soil (mapu). Then the rite is a sad remark, like "sorry ñuke mapu (mother earth), we really tried..." It's so depressing.

    Just want to point out that Adam McKays last two movies "Vice" and "The Big Short" have a very similar style to this one and I even prefer them. Would be worth watching/reacting if you haven't.

    • @mnomadvfx
      @mnomadvfx 2 года назад

      Vice and The Big Short are essentially commentary on events after the fact though, which means that you can't really throw it back at him and say it wouldn't happen like that, because we know it did already.
      This film is much more speculatory, and therefore more open to criticism.

    • @filmliebhaber5283
      @filmliebhaber5283 2 года назад +1

      @@mnomadvfx I agree with you on that point, but my criticism does not regard the speculatory nature. Rather I prefered that the other movies made bolder stylistic choices in order to break the authenticity/suspension of disbelieve/immersion. I think for a political movie that is a good thing, since you are supposed to reflect what you are watching instead of being immersed (I am orienting myself at Brechts theory of epic theater here). Examples of the stylistic choices I mean would be the broken audio cuts, amateur zoom ins and blur in The Big Short and for example the associative images and end credits in the middle of the movie in Vice.
      My second criticism would be that this movie could be interpreted as "just listen to the science" which I think is a horrible message, since science can only give you facts (which of course should be listened to). But facts do not dictate behavior. Politics is decided by interests and ideology. The problem is not that politicians do not listen to scientists or don't understand the facts, the problem is, that they have an ideology that makes them draw conclusions the makers of this movie rightfully disagree with.

    It´s not even that difficult to deflect a comet if you detect it soon enough (which for a comet is not a difficult task, they are pretty easy to spot, there are far stealthier objects than comets). If its over half a year worth of travel away from Earth, then all it takes is a "poke" with a heavy rocket going very fast. Yes, the comet weights like a billion times more, but the combination of inertia and distance makes deflection rather easy.
    The real problem is not in comets or huge asteroids, as the movie is a metaphor. The problem is in long-term creeping problems, which are larger in timescale than what normal people can comprehend. The movie is also a critique of a late-stage capitalism, where sociopathic people in charge of money/governments (doesn´t really matter which at this point) turn everything into profit, and the cynical public then turns everything into meme.

    Having watched movies like Asteroid, Armageddon, and Deep Impact, it's really sad that people nowadays would rather distract themselves or make light of anything that they deemed uncomfortable rather than come together and collectively confront it.

    If I was told a comet was heading towards earth, and Yule asked to be exclusive with him. I’d say yes.
    If freakin Timothee Chalamet asked me to be exclusive, knowing a comet was about to crash into earth, I would freakin say Yes. Look at him. He’s so cool. He’s so kind. I think his kisses would be 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I wouldn’t kick him out of my bed.

    if this situation were to ever happen I think I would just say goodbye to my family and take a bunch of pills before it hit. I wouldn't be able to stand the anxiety and dread of waiting for death. Just take a huge amount of pills, sit down with my favorite movie or music and close my eyes and just let the pills take me.

    Maybe I'm cynical that we wouldn't actually get to the point where ANYONE would or could [try to find a way to] disintegrate the meteor, LOL, but hats off to the people who put this movie together, including the FACT that there IS a government dept in charge of potential space-based threats to life - it's more scary when it's the truth LOL. It's got the right balance of "woke", old-school racism and sexism, the song is great by the way including the lyrics that don't mean anything, you know when they do that and the audience still love the song...

    I was legitimately disgusted watching this scene. It was so obvious that it wasn't going to work. But they're so arrogant. So greedy. The moment the damn phone company showed up at the launch room and they said he was good because he was their top donator aka top lobbyist, my heart sank. I saw it clear as day. They would rather kill everything than go without. The failure of leadership is so clear when the nations leader is second hand to a business owner. He's insane, an egomaniac. And all that money means nothing against the end of the world
