What I think the reviewers don’t quite understand is that satire depends on elevating reality to a new level of absurdity. When reality becomes absurd, the only way to satirise it is to elevate aspects of it further. I think they’re not quite in touch with how weird things are getting down here among the plebs.
I am incredibly difficult on films and very Very hard to please. This was hysterical. I could care less how loud the message was, it's art. You guys are jaded, understandably
Completely agree with this review. Nothing was funny, no one was funny, not even Jonah Hill. It was really boring and tasteless. What it has to say I think is brilliant, but it's so misguidedly told that it becomes tacky and it loses its power. Not the worst movie of the year, but it certainly wasn't good or sophisticated in my opinion.
in 2019 astronomy found a comet measuring 1 km closer to the earth and the distance between it being found to the independence of the earth was 4 months. so when in the film a 10 km-sized comet is found hitting the earth within 6 months it is actually very realistic.
"It won't change anybody's mind" is a laughably high bar. Have you met people? It's ridiculous to think that if a satire doesn't change anyone's mind it has failed. One could argue that it should be funny or entertaining, at least, but asking for something as impossible as changing people's minds is too much. If it were that easy to change people's minds, satire wouldn't even exist.
The hate is craaaazy. Was a very enjoyable movie, talking about how u don’t like someone’s hair or teeth is just odd. Don’t watch a movie if you’re in a miserable mood, u won’t enjoy any movie that way.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It was spot on with it's criticism of social media, cable news, corrupt politicians, oligarchs and the general idiocy of the modern world. We laughed a LOT. Great fun!
I think if you're extreme at either end of the spectrum, then you won't like this movie... make of that what you will. I don't think it's made to have an answer, just holding a mirror up to everything. Chaotic on purpose.
I liked this movie a little. But it was in deed heavy handed in its message when it really didn't need to be. Real life is already so ridiculous that McKay really didn't need to exaggerate so much. I look at Tina Fey's impersonation of Sarah Palin. The SNL writers never even had to come up with funny lines. Fey would just put on the wig and the glasses and repeat word for word whatever ridiculous shit she would say the previous week and it was hilarious.
Just saw it… absolutely incredible movie. Sometimes you have to see the obviously insane & despicable behaviour in real life portrayed on screen to wake people up. I’m stunned at Libs complaining about this movie … kinda shows their hand in enabling this exploitative greedy capitalist system that they’ve spread & held up through media. It’s the mainstream media that turned Bill Gates & his ilk a hero. Now other side found theirs in Elon. So I can see why Libs be mad at this movie crapping on them too. Can’t imagine what Joe & Mika must be feeling 😂 Easily one of the best movies of the year. And actual bold ending… no emotional positive ending. No hero coming to save the day. No Bill, no Elon. And certainly not Apple 😂
Are you kidding? This movie is a product of Capitalism. It's part of the problem. The film blames all of us for being ignorant, but completely ignores that the Capitalist systems that make films like this have way more power and impact on climate change. There's no self awareness; just blaming everyone else. Leonardo DiCaprio's $30million will not be helping to save the planet. Those Oscar nominations are not going to save our children. This film takes an issue that we should all care about, trivializes it in a way that completely misrepresents it (a comet hitting the planet is not our fault, but climate change IS), and then just uses it as a form of virtue signaling for academy prestige. It's an insidious, cynical, garbage fire of a film.
This movie was so funny and it was painfully accurate to real life. There’s a reason it hammers it’s point so much it’s that important. I feel that this movie is as much a reflection of society as it is a cautionary tale. It’s a feel good feel bad movie. And everyone in it truly understands the assignment.
Hilarious satire. I loved it. It doesn't make real world problems any less real or serious. What it does is honk the horn louder, and helps me focus and takes some pressure off, which helps with real-life perseverance. Perfect satire.
This is a fascinating review because I basically agree with all their issues, but I liked it a good deal. Comedy is subjective, so it either works for you, or it doesn't. I chuckled a fair bit throughout. I do get their complaints; it's OBVIOUS and doesn't say anything we couldn't get from watching some Mainstream Media Outlet. It's not nearly as cutting as it needs to be. Honestly, these days, the most subversive satirical take is if you put someone completely sensible in the middle of this crap-storm of modern media discourse. Get a level-headed, listening to experts, pragmatist to deal with this crisis despite the frenzy of everyone around them. Mckay only wants to play in extremes. Hopefully he gets more thorough insights on topics like this next time he makes a flick. But also I think some of the issues they have seem unfair to levie against any individual movie. 1) Sublty is overrated. I'd argue all of the greatest satires are not very subtle. DR. STRANGELOVE is not subtle about who and what it's critiquing, NETWORK (which this movie owes a lot to) isn't very subtle at all. Even Spike Lee (who I think is maybe the greatest modern American Satirist) has satire in nearly all his films. BAMBOOZLED and BLACKKKLANSMAN I'd consider both satirical and Lee is and has never been all that subtle (that's what makes him great). So hitting you over the head kind of goes with the territory. The thing that sets this film and say BAMBOOZELD apart is that Spike Lee has far more interesting things to say about the topic, and is far more knowledgeable about how to blend documentary and fiction to comment on the present. McKay just isn't as insightful and ends up making stuff that feels obvious. 2) Changing hearts and minds seems like an unfair especially in this day and age. I'm not sure even the best satire could do that, Nobody who's willing to watch say DO THE RIGHT THING are the types of ppl who would have their minds changed by that movie. I firmly believe that the ppl who most need to see any satire or cultural commentary are so averse to being lectured, they'd avoid it anyway. Even if DON'T LOOK UP was a masterpiece (it isn't), the only ppl who'd be willing to watch it would be folx like Christy and Alonso anyway. Unfortunately... 3) And Finally, I really dug the performances here. They're arch, over-the-top, and a bit silly but they work for the tone of this flick. Honestly, for as good as LEO and JLAW are in this, I think those roles could have been even better if played by PAUL GIAMATTI and ROONEY MARA and have them play it without the self-conscious comedic edge Leo and JLaw gave. If this movie had given Paul Giamatti that big "Network Moment" (that Leo really nails btw) but played it completely straight with the kind of exasperation he does so well, it could have been one of the best moments in a movie in recent history. And Rooney Mara's deadpan prolly would have felt more impactful than JLaw's kind of eye-rolling attitude (although she was great). Erica Albright in THE SOCIAL NETWORK is JLaw's character in Don't Look Up and I think Rooney Mara could have DEMOLISHED this. But unfortunately, these days, you can't structure an all-star cast around Giamatti and Mara. But they would have been great. Anyway, great review guys. Looking forward to the next one! P.S. Watch SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD. Very similar concept, but more of a romance. I love it, and it's a better film than this. Not a satire more of a comedic examination of the world on the edge of oblivion. It's fantastic.
Agree with 90 percent of your points I'm skeptical about this even as a McKay fan BUT this feels like two overprivileged film critics who don't do real work and looking down at a solid effort And has either of them done a great satire Feels like mindless hate on display
I would say that there are good examples of satire that is loud, blatant, and heavy-handed. But it'd be stuff like Parasite or Sorry To Bother You. Don't Look Up is on neither of those films levels from a comedy or even a thematic perspective. Like if McKay didn't get such A-List Oscar talent involved, you'd probably see this movie on the level of an SNL sketch.
No so much about satire.... but this was a Simpson episode, AND A CLASSIC ONE SO MUCH SO THAT EVEN NEIL DEGRAS TYSON TALKS ABOUT IT! You can add all these celebs you want, but it was done better in less then 30 minutes and with paper and pencil.
A rare disagreement! I thought this movie was spot on satire. Alonso, I respect your reviews a plenty, but I can't help but feel that you have more faith in our government than it deserves. This is almost exactly how it would react. The "Tim Apple" character was great, and my favorite part was the pentagon general robbing our main characters. (Cause of coarse those scummy fucks would 🤣🤣🤣)
Well, the grinch got the breakfast blonde lady this Christmas. This film was so much fun. It got me many good belly laughs. It was long but I thought it paid off by the end.
They're just mad that "journalist" David Sirota who wrote this made them look bad with what it depicts in this film and it IS telling that most reviews aren't mentioning that Sirota wrote it because as mad as they are at him, they don't want to attack their own.
Whether I agree with you or not, I respect your takes. But on this film, I am shocked that you didn't get this. It could be shorter, but every criticism you have is, in my opinion, completely off the mark. It's an excellent film. Please watch for yourselves!
Couldn't disagree more, comedy has to be subtle to be humorous is such a weird take IMO. This movie was in development pre-pandemic and was conceptualized as an allegory for climate change. Timothée Chalamet was one part they should've removed, but overall fantastic movie!
i feel like all these critics who hate the movie are the ones that buy into all this media crap that's been in our faces within the last year and the film is 100% accurate on how when there's a problem or situation in the world, the media will distract the public with non problematic problems like celeb drama etc and although i did have issues with the film, i still think its one of the best films i've seen all year and i definitely recommend it.
I'm completely with Christy and Alonso with the review even though I didn't hate it as much as them. The movie just has one message which is "The rich powerful people will fuck you over" but that's really...all it's got? I don't mind that it is blatant, but it doesn't seem to have any greater storytelling or joke telling other than observing that these are things that already happen in the world. It's accurate to many things when it comes to the politicians or social media actions, but there's nothing really clever or revolutionary here. I'm also kind of baffled that the non-elite, sympathetic people are Jennifer Lawerence and Leo DiCaprio who are some of the most highly paid, recognizable actors here. There are a few jokes and performances that are funny, but that's about it. Otherwise, this movie is Idiocracy for smug doomers.
The editing sucked, the pacing sucked, the script sucked, the comedy sucked, it was SO LONG, and yet all I see today are idiots online saying it’s a masterpiece and so timely. We live in an era where all you gotta do is make something the masses can sorta relate to and they think it’s amazing. So depressing, this could have actually been great if Adam McKay got out of the way.
I think Adam McKay is a funny dude. I think he's a smart dude. But he was doing more good for Cinema and the world when he was making dumb Will Ferrell comedies.
"But when virtually everybody turns up stupid or insane-- or, what is worse, psychopathic-- I want to know what this picture proves. The President... is a dolt, whining and unavailing with the nation in a life-or-death spot. But worse yet, his technical expert... is devious and noxious... . The ultimate touch of ghoulish humor is when we see the [extinction event] and a jazzy sound track comes in... . Somehow, to me, it isn't funny. It is malefic and sick." -1964 New York Times Review of Dr. Strangelove Your reaction to a movie like this is a good litmus test of how you see yourself in relation to the establishment. Frankly, I was hopeful that you guys would have enjoyed it. Certainly there is nothing wrong with a different opinion. But in this case, the hatred of this movie tends to be primarily from the left end of the establishment, while progressives and the actual populist right (as opposed to fake populist right wing politicians) loved it. That's why it is well on the way to becoming the most popular film in Netflix history.
I usually agree with most of your reviews, but no this time. The movie is good. Maybe this doesnt feel like satire, because is almost a documentary. As a non american, watching your shit show politics frome the outside, this movie hits the nail. We're all going to die and here you are discusing if it maybe should have been a subtle, funnier movie.
Agreed. This is like watching "House of Cards" post-2015 and especially in the wake of the Trump presidency. When the truth is stranger than fiction, fiction has to be a bit more creative to make it land. "The Other Guys" was a good comedic film about the '08 financial crisis as well. A film with JLaw's & Timothee Chalamet's character would've been more interesting and they should've decided who should be the central focus; Lawrence or DiCaprio.
I disagree with the fact that the comet was “climate change”. I think the movie showed how divided the county is and how the media plays a huge role in this…
I actually preferred this over The Big Short. I found it less obnoxious (except for Jonah Hill, his character was annoying and unfunny) than The Big Short too. It's definitely not very funny and not great, but I didn't dislike it quite as much as you guys did.
Couldn’t disagree more with this take. The movie annoyed precisely the type of people that need to be annoyed. It’s soo on the nose because that’s all we have now. Very funny, great plot and great acting.
If these two weren't able to enjoy and respect this movie for what it is, I will assume they're both part of the problems that this movie tackles. Plain and simple.
Considering how irony and subtlety goes over most people's that this movie is about head, its kind of needed to be very "on the nose" and I liked it a lot. Yes it was not subtle but considering how we already have tried pretty much everything, this is very much the only way possible. This movie is about climate change, the fact that it also fits current covid idiocy is just a sad coincidence. The movie hit all the right notes. Also I think you didn't get most nods, Cate Blanchet is not really making a parody of Fox, they are mocking the Morning Joe duo and rightly so, as they are so called "liberal, progressive" media but are very much part of the problem, more so then Fake News channels because these pretend to care. I gave this a 7/10 because it was very cathartic and especially the ending was very well done and the credits scene was funny as hell.
I'll have to watch this film. I've seen one review now that says it's hilarious and now this one that says it's not. Luckily I can wait to see it on Netflix.
Dead-on review. Melanie Lynskey throwing the pills at Leo and Timothee's grocery store line were the sole moments at which I laughed aloud. No. Just. No. Thank you both.
Ok so just about everyone in the comments liked the movie, many really liked it.. the “experts” ehh.. lol I feel like regular people will Ike the movie.
I agree with most of what you guys said, but I thought Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett were hilarious. Mark Rylance was annoying. LeoD and JLaw are too dramatic. They're kind of humorless and seem to be in a different movie.
Usually I agree with you guys on reviews but man are you guys way wayyyy off on this one. Just that scene when Leo breaks down on live TV, omfg, if you werent on the floor dying of laughter, yeah i can see why this film FELT like a 2 hour snooze fest when it was hilarous.

This duo needs desperately to be a trio (or more) again. We need the lighter point of view of Matt or anyone with a sense of humor. Urgent.
I really loved Vice so I was hopeful this would be pretty good at least. But my hopes never came close to fruition. Its a total failure. Mark Rylance is the pick of the actors. Cait Blanchett does her best as well but it just doesn't work. It's a toothless satire, it's tired, uninspired and a waste of everyone's time - viewers and actors. Adam Mackay can do a lot better. Maybe a better writer next time.
I like almost anything Adam McKay makes, so I am going to watch it regardless. It is disappointing this movie got such a low rating from you both, and makes me less anticipated for it. Network 1976 handled satire really really well that movie is an example of how it should be done....................
What I think the reviewers don’t quite understand is that satire depends on elevating reality to a new level of absurdity. When reality becomes absurd, the only way to satirise it is to elevate aspects of it further. I think they’re not quite in touch with how weird things are getting down here among the plebs.
i really enjoyed this movie. maybe not in my top 10 of the year but definitely better than 2.1 lol.
Is it me or is Christy looking younger?
Example of where critics miss the mark. Really funny and timely film.
in 2019 astronomy found a comet measuring 1 km closer to the earth and the distance between it being found to the independence of the earth was 4 months. so when in the film a 10 km-sized comet is found hitting the earth within 6 months it is actually very realistic.
Maximus Decimus Meridius: "Are you not entertained?"
Alonzo: "Not really, no. . ."
When did the definition of review change?
The hate is craaaazy. Was a very enjoyable movie, talking about how u don’t like someone’s hair or teeth is just odd. Don’t watch a movie if you’re in a miserable mood, u won’t enjoy any movie that way.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It was spot on with it's criticism of social media, cable news, corrupt politicians, oligarchs and the general idiocy of the modern world. We laughed a LOT. Great fun!
The trailers looked horrible and not funny. Not surprised by this
I think if you're extreme at either end of the spectrum, then you won't like this movie... make of that what you will.
Can’t imagine what Joe & Mika must be feeling 😂
Easily one of the best movies of the year.
I just saw it and I could not agree with either of you less. I thought this was very powerful.
Agree with 90 percent of your points
I'm skeptical about this even as a McKay fan BUT this feels like two overprivileged film critics who don't do real work and looking down at a solid effort
And has either of them done a great satire
Feels like mindless hate on display
I would say that there are good examples of satire that is loud, blatant, and heavy-handed. But it'd be stuff like Parasite or Sorry To Bother You.
Don't Look Up is on neither of those films levels from a comedy or even a thematic perspective. Like if McKay didn't get such A-List Oscar talent involved, you'd probably see this movie on the level of an SNL sketch.
So where is Matt's body hidden??
(Cause of coarse those scummy fucks would 🤣🤣🤣)
I saw it on my TV via Netflix and I think it worked a lot better as a streaming production at home than as a cinema release.
Well, the grinch got the breakfast blonde lady this Christmas. This film was so much fun. It got me many good belly laughs. It was long but I thought it paid off by the end.
I don't know why this has to be subtle.
They're just mad that "journalist" David Sirota who wrote this made them look bad with what it depicts in this film and it IS telling that most reviews aren't mentioning that Sirota wrote it because as mad as they are at him, they don't want to attack their own.
Oscar noms and bafta and Sag! Yeah it’s such a bad movie right. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Whether I agree with you or not, I respect your takes. But on this film, I am shocked that you didn't get this. It could be shorter, but every criticism you have is, in my opinion, completely off the mark. It's an excellent film. Please watch for yourselves!
I'm really surprised they disliked this movie so much.
I loved it.
Nah you guys are high. This movie is not a 2/10 lmao
Seriously... even the "top reviewer" average on Tomatometer is 46%
Couldn't disagree more, comedy has to be subtle to be humorous is such a weird take IMO.
No. People dislike the movie because the filmmaking was poorly executed. People agree with the message but the movie wasn’t well made
everything you need to know about this video: They gave a higher score to THUNDERFORCE!
Adam McKay is always preaching to the choir. Vice was a movie I wanted to walk out off, because it was just too on the nose.
“We have Joyless Reed”
Adam McKay is a good director.
I give him big props on giving us this film.
2.1???? How bad can it be?😂
The editing sucked, the pacing sucked, the script sucked, the comedy sucked, it was SO LONG, and yet all I see today are idiots online saying it’s a masterpiece and so timely. We live in an era where all you gotta do is make something the masses can sorta relate to and they think it’s amazing. So depressing, this could have actually been great if Adam McKay got out of the way.
Seriously? This is why I put more stock in "audience" reviews than critics' reviews.
Why? Critics tend to be smarter than the general audience.
How do so many people love this film so much? It's so on the nose 👃👃👃 laaame
I think Adam McKay is a funny dude. I think he's a smart dude.
But he was doing more good for Cinema and the world when he was making dumb Will Ferrell comedies.
Anyways
Let me guess - Alonso doesn’t like it?
"But when virtually everybody turns up stupid or insane-- or, what is worse, psychopathic-- I want to know what this picture proves. The President... is a dolt, whining and unavailing with the nation in a life-or-death spot. But worse yet, his technical expert... is devious and noxious... .
The ultimate touch of ghoulish humor is when we see the [extinction event] and a jazzy sound track comes in... . Somehow, to me, it isn't funny. It is malefic and sick."
-1964 New York Times Review of Dr. Strangelove
Your reaction to a movie like this is a good litmus test of how you see yourself in relation to the establishment.
Use me as the dislike button
This might be one of the worst films I have ever seen. Great acting though.
I loved how this movie displayed the stupidity of modern society but it really was awful.
One of the best films of the year actually...
I disagree with the fact that the comet was “climate change”. I think the movie showed how divided the county is and how the media plays a huge role in this…
You disagree with a fact? Interesting.
Yet another reviewers who is a character of this movie...
Glad you enjoyed.
If these two weren't able to enjoy and respect this movie for what it is, I will assume they're both part of the problems that this movie tackles. Plain and simple.
Or it was just a bad movie. Bad filmmaking, bad acting
Really enjoyed Vice and The Big Short. Not sure what went wrong here. Maybe too preachy and indulgent?
DLU kind of made me think of a more American on the nose version of something like In the Loop.
Ha, true! In the Loop is great.
I thought it was fun
If you both has supported this self righteous mess of a movie I would have unsubscribed. But you didn't. Kudos, good review.
I'll have to watch this film. I've seen one review now that says it's hilarious and now this one that says it's not. Luckily I can wait to see it on Netflix.
wow were you guys off. just watched it's premier on netflix and laughed the entire way through it. haven't laughed that much at a movie in a while.
Dead-on review. Melanie Lynskey throwing the pills at Leo and Timothee's grocery store line were the sole moments at which I laughed aloud. No. Just. No. Thank you both.
Thanks always for your thoughts, David!
Ok so just about everyone in the comments liked the movie, many really liked it.. the “experts” ehh.. lol
I feel like regular people will Ike the movie.
Critics don’t like it because they’ve seen many other better versions of the same movie.
This is easily one of the best films of the year, too bad you weren't able to fully appreciate it
It’s horrible and painful to watch
I liked this movie. It was longer than it needed to be but overall a good watch.
I agree with most of what you guys said, but I thought Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett were hilarious. Mark Rylance was annoying. LeoD and JLaw are too dramatic. They're kind of humorless and seem to be in a different movie.
It’s okay
It was entertaining for me and I found funny the mentions of Chile. I’m a Chilean.
Adam McKay ruined Vice and this movie with his relentless, acetic heavy-handedness. Satire wasn’t smart or funny.
Agreed. Thanks for watching!
Urgent.
I really liked the movie. It’s a little long but I liked it.
I enjoyed this film very much.
First time I’ve completely disagreed with one of your videos! Go watch this film :)
These two use the word "shrill" in their reviews way too often! They clearly don't know the meaning of that word at all!
I like almost anything Adam McKay makes, so I am going to watch it regardless. It is disappointing this movie got such a low rating from you both, and makes me less anticipated for it. Before watching your review, all of the bad press I've seen for this movie was with people with very horrible political opinions, so I had hoped I would be pleasantly surprised with this movie. But it seems like this movie is about to be actually bad. Let's see I guess.
So, guess you haven't seen that the audience response is very positive...
I really was entertained by the movie.
Almost everybody responding to this review is disagreeing with it. Christy and Alonzo are not in sync with their fans here.
Wait, you actually like Vice?
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Is this review a joke? I give this movie a solid 7/10 and I watched it with three others who all thought it was a very good satire.
It seems like more of a crowd pleaser than an oscar film.
This was funny... but that's my opinion.
