Marina and Ulay started an intense love story in the 70s, performing art out of the van they lived in. When they felt the relationship had run its course, they decided to walk the Great Wall of China, each from one end, meeting for one last big hug in the middle and never seeing each other again. retrospective Marina performed ‘The Artist Is Present’ as part of the show, a minute of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her. Ulay arrived without her knowing it and this is what happened
I didn't want to be the guy who starts a sentence with actually, especially 8 years after your comment, but actually they had prepared this performance 8 years prior to doing it while they were still going strong, but the Chinese government took so long to allow them to do it that in the time it took for them to get China's approval, their relationship plummeted. Anyway, this performance the Artist is Present always makes me cry.
Not true....Marina and Ulay saw each other plenty of times after their goodbyes at the great wall of China, she talks about her in her book, which I'm reading. Ulay was flown in to this performance at Marina's request. Also, Ulay took her to court to get more money for their performance work shortly after this performance ended. She talks about all this in "Walk through Walls".
This proves that 'performance art' is legit and can be extremely powerful for both the artist(s) and the spectators who get a glimpse into their souls through the performance.
I think the part of this that touched me the most is how she tries so hard at the end to compose herself to continue her art but she has to keep closing her eyes. You can tell that she is still so in love with him.
It was emotional sure, but they weren't in love. He later sued her (and justly won) because she tried to cut his name out of their joint works and robbed him of the profit. He won the case but passed a few years later
Marina and Ulay were partners in art and lovers in life for 10 years or so in their youth. They ended their relationship in 1988, and they haven't seen each other since until the weeks leading up to this exhibit in MoMA. Ulay visited Marina's home before the performance, but she didn't expect to see him again on the opening day of her exhibit. He went through the gallery and got in line like everyone else. It totally surprised her.
I would've liked to be the woman after Ulay. Catching her after that intense moment. Sharing with her the feeling of what just happened. Being the first face she sees after being shaken. I am sure there was an intense connection and she remembers the woman's face as much as his.
Truly beautiful. Connecting on this level is what everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. This demonstrates that no matter how good something is, that unless you work at it to keep it it isn't guaranteed to work. However, some things are just meant to be.
The truest most purest form of long lost love 😊❤! The connection they share after all those years, you can see it in their faces, and their eyes speak out loud! This is the most beautiful thing ever, and I need to just watch this when I need a reminder 🤗. I can see the hurt, the passion, the love, that look of just don't speak cause I can already read you & feel you! Noone truly needs words, we are bound by energies & connections!
My favorite thing about this scene was how she let go and then how she worked extraordinarily hard to battle through the torrent inside her in order to show up 100% present and devoted to her next visitor/guest/partner. Yes, this piece is a tale about the beautiful moment when she broke (for him) but to me the greater beauty was watching her detach, fortify, and rebuild. Carrying forward her honor and tribute to the past in how she walks into her future with respect, grace, and dignity.
"In reality, people are not most disappointed by their failures, but by the happiness that they never experienced, because they never allowed themselves to experience it" from Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel "Crime and Punishment.
I learned about this performance from an art history textbook. I went to RUclips to satisfy my curiosity. I didn't think I would cry. The language of gestures, eyes, and tiny facial muscle movements told more than words. I am impressed. It is a heartbreaking moment full of love and empathy ❤
Love in the time of social media: I just managed to write to a man I loved 20 years ago. We were together very little time, he had long planned to go abroad on business and I had to go back to finish my studies. But he was handsome and possibly the sweetest man I'd ever met. After he left, I wondered countless times where he had gone and "what if....". He answered to me, with the same sweet kindness I remember. Today he is happily married, as I am. But I have never really forgotten him and I wish I could see him again, even if only for an hour.
Yes she is and she doesn't hide it, she even mentioned something about it in her interviews, but she still managed to keep herself together and continue her performance. What a woman, what a professional, what an artist!
Bad emotions*. He sued her and won for joint artwork. He impregnated his translator and cheated on her multiple times during their relationship. Can’t judge a book by its cover
I find it funny that people are saying "is this what art has come to/become?" She us doing something that has been done cor 50+ years! Shes a performance artist. She is showing emotion and crying as if seeing a long lost lover each time someone sits down. That is Art in its truest form. Its not a painting or a sculpture, its true love and emotion, thats what Art is. She did this everyday for 7 1/2 hours for 3 months.
I cried the first time I saw this. Now that I've looked into the backstory, I'm a little annoyed because they actually planned this. They met that morning to talk about it. It was intentional. But, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, many of the people who sat with her became emotional from it. Something about just staring into someone else's eyes, giving them your full, undivided attention, and receiving that same attention back moved a lot of people. So maybe, just maybe, for two people who loved each other for so long, and shared so much of themselves, performed and pushed each other to their limits as much as they had, taking that moment together in silence, reflecting on everything and seeing what they lost... maybe it was real. Maybe it was a still a true, genuine moment for them to not think about the bad, just for a second, and remember, possibly even mourn, the bond that they had.
My Art History professor showed us this as one of her lessons. I'm so glad I found it again. Every time I need a good happy cry I'll come back to this video.
At first I thought how I like her blood red dress then I noticed Ulay's shirt collar has colour of a calmer shade of red--this whether by accident or done intentionally, is very endearing. Thank you for the vid x

What people have to understand is art is subjective. Weather someone says this is art or not they are right no matter what. That’s what is so cool about art it’s neither right or wrong, correct or incorrect.
No one seems to mention that he looks basically unemotional. He feels awkward in the moment, that’s very clear, and makes sense. I don’t see anything at all like what so many other people seem to see with him here.
I didn't know the context of this when I started watching it, so I assumed that part of the performance was her deliberately making herself cry every time someone sat down in front of her (which itself is evocative of something, I think), and I though "My god, that must be so taxing on her!" For her sake, I'm very glad that no, it wasn't just that. XD
An entire life in a moment. Life is the real masterpiece.
