    Most people have heard, 'strike it like a match' but not really knowing what it meant. 'Sticking' is generally, you touch to get an arc, and it STICKS. Sticks can be strong. You have to stop and break the rod off with pliers. Scratching like a match - not just once - but many times quickly, gets the rod tip in more of a mood to keep the arc going. Don't move too far away from the work piece while scratching. Strike it like a match multiple times quickly and when the arc holds.. get welding. Sticking sticks on first touch.. so use more start-touches instead.

    I had to do some really serious welding that needed some serious strength a couple days ago.
    I didn’t “pool cue” it.
    I touched, then lifted a little bit to warm the rod tip.
    After that, I laid down a roll of beautiful nickels in nice, even passes.
    When that was done, I went to build up an edge on the same part.
    THAT took a bit of doing, because I had to let the bead cool before laying down some good, hot passes.
    Deslagging after each build is a must, but I couldn’t let the metal cool down much, because I needed a consistent heat treat in the metal.
    I would have liked to use some really hard rod, but I don’t think the blade I was working on would have survived the welding process, even being 1/4 inch steel.
    I did dump the hot metal into some nice, cold water to make the surface nice and hard for sharpening!

      I usually find the beginning of a new rod is the most likely to get stuck, then once it's got stuck a couple of times you need to knock off the burnt/loose flux around the end, the next time you start you'll likely get an arc going, once it's going its' pretty forgiving in comparison to starting. I started learning with 7014 at 60 amps, not sure if it's the best way to start but it wasn't a disaster for sure.

      No more than anyone else i'm sure. Understand, I am not saying to hold the rod for the entire weld, if you do that the rod will heat up and glove will not keep heat off you. This is merely a starting practice. Strike are, start weld and get off of it. It does not heat up that fast so its not like lighting a lady finger firecracker, it's more like lighting a smoke bomb. Lady finger you do so with caution due to the danger that will come fast, but a smoke bomb you can hold in your hand, light then set it down when you feel like it but its not advised to hold it through out the process.

    How is the welding business?

    • @KbgWelding
      @KbgWelding  Год назад +1

      It's a challenge, but I wouldn't have it anyother way. We are growing and have got to a point where we are not squeezing out every week to cover payroll. Like a recent Ice Cube clip stated, "if you aren't willing to go 5 or 6 years without making a dollar then don't start. It takes that long to see positive results." If you have any questions please reach out. Most people that learn how to weld and want to start a business have the welding skills but not the business skills. At least I didn't. We are in year 6 and grateful. All glory to God, in Jesus Name.

    Why aren't stick welders designed to hold the rod at the end and a wire clip attached to the metal end. The piece at the end could be basic or advanced with a clicker to feed more as you weld. Like a weighted mechanical pencil crossed with a caulking gun. Exactly what you are doing with your off hand.

      The rod is covered in flux insulating you from getting shocked and it takes a few seconds before the entire rod heats up…..you’ll be fine,my dude. FYI-if you’re going to be a career “welder”or simply if you weld a lot….you ARE going to get burned in some way,it is wag at it is. Whether it’s by sparks or brushing up against/grabbing something you just welded by accident-it’s gonna happen-just keep some neosporin and bandaids in your lunchbox and don’t sweat it.

    Hey,
    just wanted to share the Gospel that all men need, the Bible says all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) this means we all deserve death and separation from a perfect and holy God. But God did not leave us for dead, He sent His only begotten Son to die in yours and my place, so that anyone who believes in Him and repents of sin will be saved from separation from God, and have eternal life! I urge you please put your faith in Jesus Christ and follow Him, He promises to save all who cry out to Him and have a humble heart. We arent guaranteed another day so we must repent of sin and seek Him today while He may be found!
