I was born in Cologne and live here. The people of Cologne have a strong connection to the cathedral. If it were to be rebuilt today, it would cost over 10 billion euros. The cathedral is a permanent construction site and in Cologne they say, "When the cathedral is finished, the world will end." Many people believe that the cathedral is just an attraction, but it is a real church with masses, etc.

The most special thing about this cathedral is, that it owns itself. Not the katholic church, not the city just itself. Isn‘t that crazy?

I'm an atheist, but was born and raised catholic, so I do not believe in god but admire the people who planned and built those cathedrals, and also churches or chapels, even in small villages. I often walk into them and have a look around to see the art and architecture, so one day many years ago, the following happened:
I was in Passau, a city on the river Danube in Bavaria, close to Austria. So what I wanted to do was take a cruise on the river but found out that without advance booking, getting a ticket was almost impossible in high season. So I took a stroll through the old town, came by the cathedral, and walked in. Just when I had started to look around, the church organ set in from above, and it was such a beautiful sound I had to sit down on a church bench, and other visitors who had been in before me did the same, new entrants did so either or just left at the entrance. The organist played one piece that lasted about twenty minutes, and with the acoustics of that cathedral and that golden ornaments all around, it sort of lifted me up to a higher sphere. I don't know what or why that was, certainly not for tourist entertainment, so I assume it was a rehearsal for some bigger event. Anyway, I went out almost hypnotized, and first thing I did was find a bench, sit down, and smoke a cigarette. I had gotten an understanding of how deeply religious people must have felt (or even feel today) when seeing that extraordinary architecture and hearing that fantastic sound.

The Most impressive think on the dom is for me that no storm can break it because of its flexibility. I Was born in Leverkusen from 1983 since 2015. This is now the best soccer club in the bundesliga with the loudest Fans. Because the stadion called BayArena was build Extra for the Fans with family area. Nowadays i lived in Kassel. The air here is More fresh and the people take more care of each other. NRW and Bayern are the richest Areas in Germany with Baden Würtenberg.

It's fascinating to imagine how people started building the cathedral in the Middle Ages. Without machines, just with hammers, chisels and human power. How tiny the city's houses were next to the cathedral for centuries.

Well, there are also other cathedrals and churches in Europe that are impressive. For example, the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Notre Dame in Paris, St Paul's Church in London and many others. The churches wanted to outdo each other.

In the list of the tallest Chuches they leave out the Kölner Dom with 157,22 Meters.
St Pauls Church reaches 158,10 Meters and is placed second. Right after St Pauls the Dom Santa Maria del Fiore with 149,28 m reaches 3rd place.
      Why?
St. Peter at the Vatikan reaches 186,36 m and is placed 1st.
      St. Peter at Vatikan; 1
      St Pauls in England; 2
      Matia del Fiore; 3
Why is the Dome of Köln not listed 3rd? or in some cases not listed at all?

Cologne ist not a beautiful city, but it's churches and the cathedral as long as the museums worth more than a look!
Is it just me that the sound disappears from time to time and then suddenly returns?
It's a shame that people's respect has diminished so much that they had to put up a fence to prevent people from peeing against the cathedral (peeing against buildings in general is a no-go) - and I heard that to prevent homeless people from using the entrances as a place to sleep, which prevented worshippers from entering and made them feel unsafe.
Even if you are not a believer (or belong to a different religion), you should have respect for the architecture and the construction work of the people who built the churches and the cathedral.
