    Acrylic is a fantastic medium for portrait painting, but it can be so challenging to use! That is why I am teaching you the glazing technique to open a lot of possibilities and ease your frustration.
    Historically, the Old Masters used small amounts of pigment dispersed in larger amounts of linseed oil or mineral spirits to create a sense of volume and depth in their paintings. Light shines through and you can see a bit of each layer beneath the ones on top.
    We can use that technique to our advantage with acrylic. By applying several translucent layers, there is an increased sense of depth, shading, contrast and color saturation and luminosity.
    In this particular lesson (#6 of 8), I'll demonstrate how to add richness to the mid-tones of the girl's face and hair. We will also add more contrast to the image with a couple of layers to the background, and turn the form of her figure with a precisely placed glaze on her clothing.

    Hallo Matt...wow you painting is great.I really like the way you paint faces. I'm still learning that . I can't paint faces properly , and I can't paint with smooth gradient. Thanks Matt

      It takes some time. Please be patient with yourself and the process. Some artists understand and can thrive with this technique right away. Others go too opaque, have difficulty blending, but get better over time as they stick with it. I have had the pleasure of witnessing this within Realistic Acrylic Portrait School, where my students are practicing and getting consistently better over time. If you don’t give up, I can’t assure you, you will see a dramatic improvement in your portraits within months!

    Hello Matt. Your instruction using the acrylic glazing technique is fantastic. Your ability to clearly present this process is inspiring and nearly equals your skill as a painter. Question, please....It appears you use very little water to thin the paint or use misting to keep it wet. Is this the case? Thank you again for this wonderful painting series.

      Thank you, Fred! I do use a mist of water, with a Flairosol sprayer. It's important to spray the palette every 15 minutes or so. Keep watching!

    great lessons! learning a ton! i intend to download the challenge a few lessons before you end it, the reason is because some of the colors you use are not available in my art store. so i'm going to have to mix these colors from the warm and cool primary colors i do have. my request is for you to show off your colors for about two or three minutes so i can approximate the mixing. couldn't find matte medium, or they are too expensive to order online but i'll see what can be done... still i love your lessons and will ttry it out soon

      Thank you so much, Sam! When you sign up for the challenge, you will get a downloadable list of the supplies including the colors, plus how I lay them out on my pallete. Sorry for the late reply. Crazy busy with the challenge and some commissioned portraits. Blessings to you!

    Thanks so much Matt! How would you suggest we compensate for previous layers that were too dark, like in the shadow areas on the face? Would we add less raw number dark, or make it less opaque while adding these layers?

    • @fineartbymattphilleo
      @fineartbymattphilleo  3 года назад +1

      My pleasure! That’s a good question. You’ll want to “leave off” on those areas that got too dark. You’ll apply glazes on the other areas that are not as dark as they should be. With that, these spots that are too dark should come into balance. If you can, paint precisely around those dark value shapes, because with the glazing technique, areas get darker as you apply more layers to it. After doing this, and toward the end of the painting, you can evaluate your values within the image as a whole. If necessary, you can lighten up the spots that got too dark using an semi-opaque mixture that matches the color and value of the area in question and then make it a few shades lighter. Then you apply that on top and resolve it. Hope this helps!
