- It happened again... We got cut off and kicked out of another Buffet (All You Can Eat)! Today we tried to go for an ayce fish & chip meal; however, it wasn't really all you can eat. Today we are at a secret location (not to bring negative publicity to the restaurant) for their Friday all you can eat Fish and chips (cod) special! The special cost $15 and is available all day on Friday's. There was no terms or conditions for limits on the all you can eat, and it was stated it really was endless food! What do you think of this situation? Did we get our money's worth, or did the restaurant rip us off and have false advertising by not fulfilling the "all you can eat"? This is literally just like an episode of the Simpsons when Homer gets kicked out of the All You Can Eat! By the way, thank you so much for 400K subscribers! I hoped for a more positive experience, but we keep it real here. Should I try and do another All You Can Eat Fish & Chips (fried fish)?

Every time you go to all you can eat fish you get cut off. I do feel they are wrong because if you advertise it as All you can eat, it should be just that not All they think you should eat. False Advertising.

As a seafood restaurant owner I will say that we often run off of a pretty slim profit margin, most of the profits come from soft drinks, alcohol and stuff like that. That being said if I was to do an all you can eat seafood special, and a man like you came in, filming a food challenge that he was going to upload to his 400,000+ subscribers, I wouldn’t stop him. The publicity from it would pay back the loss 100x over. Bad move by the owner to prioritize the short term loss over the long term gain.
You sound like a man with good business plan and a man that is business savvy, that kind of FREE advertising is invaluable and in this day and age you can't underestimate what social media can do for..or against a business.

Michigan resident here. We have been to this restaurant only once. We were there for a special occasion and after only 45 mins and just barely finishing our food, we were told by that sane owner that we have stayed long enough and were asked to leave. I wasn't as kind as you. Unacceptable! They are a poorly rated restaurant for a reason. On a positive note, just started watching your channel. LOVE IT! Keep it up.

I love how you said it wasn’t anyone’s fault. Especially the server. She probably was uncomfortable because sometimes the servers take a beating so to speak. I worked in restaurant & other retail & I was a verbal punching bag. So thank you for being so respectful and super nice to everyone
So true, except I'd say it's not just 'sometimes', it's most of the time (in situations like the one Joel found himself in, or similar). I've worked behind bars and in a restaurant and most of the time it's the front of house staff that take a verbal beating when something goes wrong, even if it isn't their fault. It was very rare, where I worked, for the customer to not take it out on me when it clearly wasn't my fault.

That was a cheesy move on Joel’s part. Of course a small business is going to be irritated by a competitive level eater coming in and cleaning house. He should’ve been thankful and understanding, not a little baby about it.
As a citizen of Michigan, I'm truly sorry for what happened to you. The owner was very fortunate that you were the one in his restaurant filming for your You Tube channel. You are a class act, always complimenting staff when they are doing a good job. You didn't slander his name, you didn't tell us not to go to the restaurant, you highly praised the food the entire time you were eating and, best of all, you consistently hid the name of the restaurant so as not to dis them. That being said, I believe that Joel should have told the owner of the establishment that he had 400 thousand subscribers and either let the Proprietor know that he was wanting to eat 40 pieces to celebrate his hitting a new subscriber benchmark.. Legally he looks right. All you can it is all you can eat. But ethically, it's just people trying to make a profit from a business that already has small margins (I owned a restaurant; a regular one, not a buffet), so having this guy come into their place not to enjoy a meal but to eat competitively as a professional eater, in order to get more views for his channel, doesn't feel right. I love his food challenges and he seems to be a nice guy, but this video is all wrong IMHO

If he was cool about it, there wouldn’t have been a negative ending. He was nearly done anyway and would have ordered more food / paid more. If the owner walked over, said hi to the camera, shook Joel’s hand, and laughed it off.. imagine that kind of ending. That’s a cool owner.

Joel I felt so bad for you once the owner confronted you. You lost your spark and your enthusiasm for the meal in that moment. When you were cleaning up the table with the serviette and looking down at the table I could tell how truly disappointed you were. You did nothing wrong and of course you know this. Restaurants shouldn't offer an "all you can eat" if they are not going to uphold that. If I was the owner I would want to come over and meet the person who is eating so much and would be as enthusiastic about how much you've eaten as you were while you were eating it!

Kudos for keeping a pleasant attitude and recognizing that it wasn't the other staff. The owner could have easily handled this differently.

That's not the fault of the individual, rather the establishment didn't want someone beating the system. If there's AYCE, there's enough to feed other families. That could have been handled differently. The owner did that and left you with a bad mood like you did something wrong, That's pretty terrible business. However, this just shows how great of a person you are. You were very polite even after that happened and you didn't expose the restaurant. You're very kind.
Karma has it that whatever you take from others, you will pay back.
Walking into a restaurant knowing you will eat more than the owner provide for you, which means you know you're going to make someone lose his money, is NOT KIND. You actually know you're going to harm others, and you decide to do it anyway.
This will result in financial loss to you in future. And karma always come back 3 times or bigger.

I totally agree with your comment...They should state a time limit you have to eat if they offer an all you can eat service...Not only are they mis leading but surely they are going against trading standards...All restaurants seem to care about is getting people in to eat and making a fast turn over...The sooner people leave the better for the restaurant...It is as if they think the more people come in and leave quickly the more money they generate..So they should by law set a time limit and state that from the off.

I can see both sides of the argument. However, being an AYCE place, they would make money off 99% of people who don't eat that much and would not eat their money's worth of food, so it feels unfair to cut off the 1% who can eat large amounts of food. If you will cut people off, include a disclaimer that the offer is only valid for the first X amount of pieces and after that, you will charge X amount per piece. That way, people will be aware and as Joel says, he is often happy to pay extra. Rather than rudely cutting someone off as the owner did, the owner should have come up to Joel to explain the situation and allowed Joel a chance to say he would pay more or anything like that.
Maybe next time, Joel, before you eat, talk to the manager before hand and explain the situation. Ask about any caveats such as a order limit etc. If there is a cut off limit such as 39 pieces in this instance, ask if you could pay for another sitting so you could push beyond that cutoff for another 39.

The real reason he was cut off was because recording is so annoying.
What is your source? If the owner didn't want him filming, which they would likely have been well aware of in the very beginning, either by the wait staff or by Joel himself, then Joel would have prefaced this specific challenge that he was not allowed to film, or would not be doing the challenge at all.
The owner was salty over the fact that Joel was consuming significantly more than (the owner) expected, and as Joel mentions in the video, the owner/business was not making any profit from this from his $14-$15 buffet fee.
Yeah a real tragedy that he wasn't allowed to eat on someone else's dime.

The owner did you dirty by cutting you off like that. You most definitely handled the situation is a very respectful and classy way. The one thing that came to mind is, perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to call ahead before doing something an AYCE like this, just to be on the safe side.

I was actually curious prior to watching this video if this had ever happened to you. Definitely unfortunate, and I can see the disappointment on your face. You handled it with class. In the future may be worth speaking to the owner or manager beforehand to let them know how much you can eat lol. Your videos are always entertaining.
To be cut off at an all you can eat place means you’re truly a champion competitive eater, and should be considered a badge of honor. The restaurant missed out a big opportunity there.

Joel, the amount of food you can put away is simply not human. Those of us who are avid viewers are accustomed to it, but the average restaurant owner or manager probably gets a little freaked out by your seemingly endless appetite. It's great that you let them know about your mission up front, but you might consider offering to pay for two dinners when you make the initial contact. Whether they take you up on it or not, it puts the responsibility on the restaurant for whatever follows. Should keep you from getting cut off in the future. Sorry this one didn't end well, but please keep the vids coming! My stomach lives vicariously through you.

Your comment shows you didn't watch the video at all. He stated several times in the video that he was willing to pay full price if they had a problem with him eating that much. A restaurant owner should be prepared for anything.. no excuses.

But like he stated in his video he advised the staff about him filming etc. he only spoke highly about the place and the staff there, he was no doubt going to give them free promo. I think what was really disappointing was the way the owner approached Joel. He made him feel pretty uncomfortable. He was not given the chance to explain or even given the option to pay for more food. I was in no way having a stab at this establishment ☺️ I personally think it could have been handled a bit better is all

First off Joel . Of all the things I can watch on RUclips , I watch your shows preferably. I have asked myself why several times ,why . It's not just that you can eat an ungodly amount of food . I haven't seen you fail a challenge yet by the way . I watch sometimes just to see if it's possible . If you ever do , it will be ok with me . I love your humor . Your calmness . Your demeanor . Hospitality and I could go on and on . I felt how happy you was eating all that great looking fish . It looked great ! But it looked and tasted rotten after that owner did you that way . I wanted to eat there someday until I seen how it affected you . I probably would have thrown it at him and told him ware to stick those fish sticks . This is why I'm a commercial fisherman now . Same thing happened to us (4 hungry fishermen) at an all you can eat St. Louis rib night at a barbecue in lake ocherchobee fl. They didn’t give us any other options,they simply told us that we were done. We kindly gave them our opinion of the whole situation and never went back.
I guess this particular restaurant wasn’t happy that you ate an entire school of local fish. Lol
When my son was 16-17, he could eat like nothing I have ever seen. He was thin too. We went to a Tony Romas for all you can eat rib night. They tried to use a different tactic. They would take forever to bring out an order of ribs. It ticked us off so bad, we intentionally stayed there for a couple hours and tried to eat every slab of ribs they had in stock.

Restaurant owners don't deserve these big eaters. They open restaurants for making profits, to feed their families.
Anyone causes other people financial loss will suffer the same fate, by either losing lots of money later, or born in a poor family next life. These people will have to pay back all their karmic debts before bad luck ends.

I would suggest for a good video to talk with the manager or owner prior to the video in order to make sure that you get a full all you can eat fish and chips without this kind of hang up if you need to prepay or whatever the case may be pre-planning situation and make it a better experience for your viewers as well as yourself

I think you should consider the restaurant owner and the stress they under as well, i am sure you can afford to pay for any extra pieces of fish. Owners should give a maximum for customers to eat. It's an all you can eat up to a maximum of 10 pieces. No one in their right mind expect a person to eat 40 pieces of fish. 😮
They didn't offer you more fries ? That's really bad - one of the secrets of the all you can eat buffets is having all the starches and items that people love, that will FILL YOU UP quickly - they should have offered you loads of fries and bread, that would definitely slow you down.

My husband and I passed by a certain local restaurant a thousand times without stopping. We only tried it because we happened to see you eating there on RUclips, and you seem to have loved it. It's now one of our favorite restaurants.
