Classic Game Room reviews RIDGE RACER 64 from Namco for the N64 released in 2000, a comprehensive version of Ridge Racer with lots of cars and tracks that should keep Ridge Racer fans on the N64 occupied. Slide around corners "drifting!" and attempt to stay in control whilst beating other cars on the track with Namco inspired rides like Pac-Man, Xevious and Mappy. Ridge Racer is a love it or hate it kind of game with EXTREME arcade racing style controls, fast paces music and really excitable announcers, YOU GOT A NEW RECORD!!!!
I played Ridge Racer 64... In fact, I beat it as a child, got every car. Even the ones that are dang near impossible. Secret? Whenever you drift you are put on rails and the game auto steers for you. I have successfully drifted through an S turn by only drifting to the right... :I
Edit: Look at 3:20, the moment he drifts he goes from a head on collision with a wall into a perfect run along side the wall. Afterwords, he ends up twisted at a 90 degree angle on a straight-a-way... And he goes straight! No turning, just going straight down the track on rails. And that happens whenever you drift. The only thing you have to do to win is drift around every corner. The difficulty comes from straightening out after a drift. If you fail to do so the laws of physics will suddenly kick in and you'll suddenly move in whatever direction you're actually facing.
Yeah, same. I remember drifting every turn I could. My favorite car was Blinky by the end though, because it had such tight turning you never needed to drift and I liked the challenge a bit more.
"Why would you put fungus on pizza? That seems like a huge risk; the pizza could mutate and then eat you."
Truer words have never been spoken.
No, no, I'm a molecular biologist and this is a huge misconception I need to clear up.
Most mutations are deleterious and adversely affect an organism's fitness. Therefore, the pizza undergoing the mutation would more than likely just die before it eats you. Read up on pizza biology, and specifically, the chromosomal instability and carcinogensis induced by UV damage to pizza DNA.
Pro tip, always play any ridge racer in first person, the third person view always makes the drifting to be awkward.
Even the first two Ridge Racer Arcade games didn't even have a third person view, the games were meant to be played in 1st person
Agreed.
I love mushrooms on my pizza and I love Ridge Racer. Here's a tip! Play in first-person view, and avoid hitting the borders or other cars they slow you down, once you get a hold of the drifting than you're good to go for the 1st place finish line.
Ridge Racer is a bout drifting. Not to be rude, but you're playing it wrong
MCHellshit I remember the first time I played it, I was an gran turismo 2 addicted, it took some time to learn how to play RR64, but after learn and master the drift, this game can provide you a lot of fun :P
bro tell me how to drift
@@shortsland145in most of them, you let go of the gas, turn to the side hard then slam back down on the gas. Sometimes you’ve gotta break as you start to turn for half a second, it depends on the game and the car.
I find myself NEVER having to break at all in any ridge racer. It's like, once you loose traction in a slide, your car will just automatically slide and drift into what ever ridiculous corner you push it in. Just maintain speed and play with the throttle in like 5th gear, then back up into 6th when exiting the turn. Racing in ridge racer is so fun.
I think it went downhill after type 4, type 4 had everything, awesome tracks and a awesome soundtrack
So right man R4 is the pinnacle of the series. I can imagine it being kinda awkward using the N64 controller.
I just found out about this game and been playing it a bit. It's funny to see Mark reviewing it here so soon after. What I found out is that you shouldn't try to drift on every corner..but find the right drive paths to them. Drifting is only good for the steepest curves. The controls are not that bad after you get the hold of them and the game is pretty fun.
Best n64 game ever made they should make it ,Port it or remaster it for PS3 PS4 and Nintendo Switch
Christy Rivera get ridge racer type 4, it is similar
Really? Is it better than the PlayStation version? I love that one lol.
hahahaha better than super mario 64 and ocarina of time? you're off the meds moron
It is on PS3. RR7
@Tom Miller yeah but this exact one from the 64 i want it on Ps3 and Ps4 also and Nintendo Switch
Actually: "In December 2009, Michael Jackson's composer Bradley Buxer (credited in Sonic 3 as Brad Buxer) told French magazine Black & White that Jackson was actually involved with some of Sonic 3's compositions, supposedly not being credited because he wasn't happy with how they sounded, due to the lack of optimal sound reproduction on the Genesis. Buxer also claimed that the ending music of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 later became the basis for Jackson's single Stranger in Moscow." - Wikipedia
RR64 was the best N64 game I've played
I agree, the contrast is so much better isnt it? I do like the music of the Sega version now. Even if I used to consider it weaker sonically (teehee).
I love looking for the little differences now too. Easier now thanks to flash carts though I try and get the real versions of games I love.
I love the Sega these days, the sound now sounds so crisp and harder, rockier.
I'm one of those people, who loves Ridge Racer games.
I played the RR Type 4 over half of my summer when I got it one day.
I guess I can enjoy Ridge Racer games so much, because I'm very good at it.
I know how to handle the car, how to drift well.
& no I don't mind if Mark or someone else doesn't like this game series much.
Ridge Racers isn't for everybody.
Here's how you play RR64:
Choose a car that has high grip. Once just before a corner let go of the accelerator, the car will slide, aim the car where you want it, then put the power back on.
Once you've nailed that, you're pretty much set to go. However the cars that have low grip are pretty undrivable, same goes with every Ridge Racer lol. (An I would call myself a RR vet)
I've never hear of this "Pole Position" game.
I feel 95% confident in assuming it's a strip dancing simulation game based on the title.
Hes right thats not the R4 engine. The cars are more stiff, there is a checkpoint timer. And no lil branching story and 300 plus cars
Considering how I always preferred handling in my cars over speed I always opted for joystick.
Yup, the draw distance and above-average framerate are probably the best aspects of the game.
tip: Ridge Racer cars drift 'on rails.' When braking/letting off the gas, it turns like a roller coaster on a track, it's not really sliding. You're just controlling the angle of the car.
Both are common and not weird, but the difference is that mushrooms are slimy bland dirty fungus while pineapple are a delicious sweet addition to pepperoni or ham.
RR64 is insanely hard to control, the PS2 version was a lot easier to drift.
Sometimes it might also be a good idea to brake, but you should never let go off the speed pedal or your car will lose grip.
Oh yeah and it's one of those racers you have to play with the in car view... It's almost impossible otherwise, they never got the camera right imo. Play it again, slide every sharp corner, never brake ( not even once) and change the view to in car. You can now play Ridge Racer!
When I played the game when I was younger I never drifted around the corners, though I thought this game was amazingly fun.
rr6 may be hard to get your "halo"( beating every single race in single player ) but its basics are so simple. I think once the series add nitro it became effortless.
Turn into a corner as fast as you want, let off your gas, slam it back down and counter steer.
Mark, don't let go of the accelerator when you brake, and more often than not, you won't drift
Well yes that was what i was knocking at, but yes the core gameplay for the majority of the series outside say the "black sheep" games (RR Unbounded, R: Racing Evolution) still stays to its roots.
When it came out in the arcades, I didn’t like Ridge Racer. Back then, I didn’t like mushrooms either. Now, I love both. The other day, I scoffed down a large mushroom pizza while playing Ridge Racer 5. No joke.
I liked Ridge Racer on the Playstation when it first came out. I wasn't much into driving games and I think that's probably why I liked it so much.
But, Steve is brilliant at showing us what racing games look like!
I forgot which ridge racer it was, but I used to OWN at the arcades. Good times.
Ok fair enough, I'm all for the old school style when consoles were actually different, I grew up on both the Super NES and Megadrive as we call it in europe, both gave me some awesome memories. 360 vs PS3 though is ridiculous, they're near identical in terms of what they produce and how they do it with the exclusion of some exclusive titles, in contrast to the N64 x PSX which were radically different systems.
I miss the days that Nintendo 64 games where dirt cheap and when I still had time to play games like this for hours after middle school.
Just about EVERY reviewer I have ever seen (moreso "big") ones adore the NES, SNES and N64 and prefer over any other systems of the time. The fact that Mark's love for games is even across all systems (minus the Game.com) is something praiseworthy.
That doesn't mean he doesn't like Nintendo consoles just as much as everyone else does.
Yes, this game is impossible with the behind car view. In car view is 100x more enjoyable. One of my favourite N64 racing games!
I remember having an awesome game on N64. I think it was called just Lamborghini, and as far as I can remember, it was quite realistic. Track were fun, graphics were nice... You should give it a try man! Thumbs up so he can see ;w;
I wonder if mark played Ridge racer type 4. That one has more nuanced handling/physics
You're right, the correct way to play Ridge Racer is to drift around every corner! The smooth drifting and gliding around the corners is the most sublime aspect of the Ridge Racer series. It is my favorite racing game series for this reason. No other racing game has done the drifting mechanic so well. That said, I recommend the PSP Ridge Racers or Ridge Racer 6/7 because I think they really refined the controls to make drifting easier in those games. Realistic racers are much harder to me lol.
This guy... this guy has the best review voice ever.
I still don't know how to drift, but the music was awesome.
Well I find that mild cars need a little more effort needed to get them drifting, but they do the job well.
Standard cars I find are perfect I find, they don't drift too much but they don't grip too much either.
Dynamic cars just drift too easily, sometimes you're fighting to align the car. While this isn't bad for single corners, quick left to right/right to left corners you will end up losing more time due to the car drifting at too much of an angle and you having to fight to regain control.
Ridge Racer really does have crazy controls, but I do find I enjoy it quite a bit. I play a LOT of Forza and Gran Turismo, but it's nice to now and then play this instead and have something simpler, and the differing play style makes it that much more fun to have the change.
I've never played this either but going by the track maps it looks like a combination of Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution.
To the reviewer. This game is real easy if you stick with the red, white and green car. That car is almost impossible to drift with and the announcer flies in the helicopter whilst filming your replays.
Re-released on the DS as Ridge Racer DS, this is still my favorite Ridge Racer title. The rest suck in comparison.
moralgamer true the rest sucked they need to remaster this one for PS3 PS4 and Nintendo Switch
I loved the origional rage/ridge racer games on the playstation, These games always managed to do the bling right
Never let off the gas, just brake. It prevents the powerslide most of the time.
Pacman doesn't handle all THAT well.
Not in snow, at least.
The bit about mushrooms on pizza got me laughing.
Anyone else thinks that CGR needs to review Ridge Racer for PSP? IMO it's amazing.
With Ridge Racer it's all about chaining drifts as you go around the track.
If you're braking, you're doing it wrong.
The Stranger in Moscow robot dance springs to mind. RIP MJ!
So do I! I love pretty much everything SEGA and Nintendo have ever done (even the Virtual Boy and SEGA CD!) and I'm very much fond of the excellent and truly inspired soundtracks that a lot of the games had back then.
To think that some sound chips would give better music than modern generation disc based consoles is crazy, isn't it?
I've seen that video too, and to me Mega Turrican takes the cake. Lotus Turbo is definitely better on the Amiga, though.
Oh, and "Elemental Master" :)
Back in the day I did enjoy ridge racer, I just grew out of it, I need either completely futuristic or complete realistic just nothing in-between
Mark you're doing wrong. You only need to release accel button at the corner to start to drift.
I think that it's a matter of taste. I myself love the deeper sound and fatter bass of the SNES's sound chip over Megadrive's.
Oh I forgot to add something, personally I like the mrgamesack style better but that doesn't mean I don't like classic game room videos. Let's put this way mrgamesack I give it 9 out of 10 and for classic game room I give it 7 out of 10 jeje just as an example
I like Ridge Racer games alot. I have few games of this series on my collection.
I can understand if someone doesn't like this game, because driving in Ridge Races can be difficult.
I think Mark should try Ridge Racer Type 4 on PS1. It has two types of cars in use: Cars with drifting & car that drives in normal way.
After having the opportunity to play this game and the original Ridge Racer on the psx, at first I thought I felt more in control in Cruis'n USA on the N64. But, once you stop braking so much(or, at least, stop braking like in a normal racing game), I had a wonderful time playing it. This review is actually pretty good: even if he hates this game and can't play it, he doesn't say that it's a terrible game or anything. If you want to see an unfair review, check out the CGR review of Ridge Racer 7 (I haven't play the game yet, but I don't think the review was fair with fans of the series or even with casual gamers).
I'm really not into racing games but I love Ridge Racer!
It's perfect normal. In Italy there are many type of pizza with mushrooms on. When you will have the chance to go there try a "Quattro Stagioni" or a "Capricciosa" ;)
You can drift any car as long as you have the power and skill.
ridge racer 64 kicks ass, incar view slide around every bend, gotta love looking at the wall going through a corner :D
Rage Racer was best of the Ridge Racer series. There are two types of cars - drift and grip. Slidey and non slidey.
I'm a huge fan of RR4. And I was disappointed with the N64 version of RR. I even have RR4's OST in my car :)
Have to mention the Amiga at this point, my original experience of Turrican came from the Amiga. ()
Excellent thank you!
Yes, I've actually love chip tunes since the C64 days, though back then I didn't really realise it so much. These days I've grown to love synthesized music, especially with phat raw sounding oscillators! Haha. sounds, erm. well.
Mega Turrican is actually what got me to look up Turrican again. I saw it on an Aussie's video for the XRGB Mini. Funny how just seeing someone else enjoy the game makes me want to boot it up again. Though I never actually had the Genesis version.
I'm just one thats love this music intro ? so relaxing, and no bullshit
That was a year after it released on the rest of the world, so it definitely needed time to improve & get more support since pretty much Sony was new in the business, so of course it'll have few games based on a certain genre. But can't deny the fact the Need For Speed, Road Rash, Test Drive, SF Rush & others were great before GT released.
I loved this game.
I always loved ridge racer. Good old classic 3D arcade style racer. I still play ridge racer 6 on my 360. The game is all about drifting the corners and never slowing down, so if you play it like a race simulator, you'll have a hard time playing or enjoying it.
Yes, but my point was that Mark didn't exactly like the original Cruis'n, but he seemed to be positive of the sequel.
Hehe I was just ribbing Steve Benway! Of course he is a good guy! It's true that he does take the time to show us a snapshot of a game but let's not forget what Steve says in his intro: "It's just me playing the games badly ..."
And that sir is the absolute truth! Can I get an Amen or what? =P
Ahh virtual boy and sega cd! I have yet to stoop that low sir =D But I expect I will be stooping soon. Because I am interested in completing my Genesis collection, and it's just fun booting them up and trying to re-live/live the glory days. I miss the 90's. Looking back, I think it was probably the best decade ever. But then, I have said that about a lot of decades! The 90's had what I consider the birth of the internet. I will never forget that. I feel so lucky to have witnessed it.
Watching this feels like watching NFSIISE for PC, cars would be have quite similarly with ARCADE/WILD physics.
I grew up playing Monaco GP as well but I also love Ridge Racer. Not tried the N64 version though but Ridge Racer on PS1 is one of my favourite driving games, along with Outrun 2.
If you have no way of playing the N64 version, then get the DS version. It's the exact same game, but portable... and with digital steering. It's not the best, but it's got uses.
Drifting is faster when you're taking a curve, always, but this games exaggerate the effect so you can slide on in a straight road and go faster XD
The break button is just for show in Ridge Racer
You should have played with the bumper cam, Mark. The behind-car view is always disorientating in Ridge Racer, your car seems totally disconnected to what's going on. Not that I've played the N64 version but I'd expect that was the problem.
Hey, now, I love having pizza with mushrooms and pineapple. I see nothing wrong with that.
Blood Dragon, Mark please. Flamethrowers, killer cyborgs and laser shooting dinosaurs, what more do you want!?!
I loved Ridge Racer Type 4 a lot back in the day. Not sure if Ridge Racer 64 also has two different categories of cars like RRT4; Grip and Drift. Maybe Mark would prefer the Grip style of cars?
I have to agree... I've given many a Ridge Racer game a try, but the only one I can say I personally enjoyed was Ridge Racer Type 4. In fact, I love that game; as over the top as it is. Just something about it. I still pop that one in every once in a while and play it to this day. I'll have to also see about trying Rage Racer as someone suggested, since that's one of the very few in the series I have never actually tried. Good review!
Arcade-style racing games were much better on the N64 than PS1, IMO. SF Rush, Rush 2, Rush 2049 are all classics, and the Cruis'n games were pretty good too.
"...the correct way of playing this game is constantly trying to slide.."
Yup. That's how me and my friends play the N64 version anyway.
I have RRDS. Which is THE EXACT SAME GAME. Apart from graphical changes, and some new music. Still great and fun.
You can turn your car 360 degrees in this game while in a corner without crashing it. Try it, it's really silly.
The Megadrive version of Street Fighter 2 has it's pro's for sure, deeper colour contrast, I believe better framerate, also I always preferred the controller as long as you had a 6 button version, more arcadey, funnily I distinctly remember playing both versions and experiencing the joy of their differences which is interesting for the same game just on a different console (my mate had the megadrive version) though I usually put that down to being a kid and noticing small nuances a lot more.
One of the first racing games that I got for my PSP was ridge racer before Gran Turismo PSP! Then I never played Ridge Racer again lol!
Dammit, you mentioned Daytona....now I have to go listen to Rolling Start 5000 times.
No hate coming from this direction! I just love Ridge racer despite all of its failings! I make it my launch title on every Sony Platform when I can
I've only played TWO Ridge Racer games (the original top-down arcade one & the PSP one) and I actually found them fun to play.
The PSP one is of course closer to Ride Racer 64, and I don't get why he has trouble with the turning mechanism. I've played Need For Speed & Gran Turismo alot more than Ridge Racer PSP, and I had no trouble getting into it when I started out.
But, it's just me. And my love for the N64. And it's controller. :D
The genius of this game? How getting hit FROM BEHIND would send you flying back while catapulting the car ramming you ahead of you. Even better? That moment of silent frustration when you realize that this trick only works when you are on the receiving end! :D
Nice looking N64 game.
I forget if you reviewed it or not, but try Ridge Racer R4. I swear that one plays differently and more stable than most of them. Also the 3ds game plays way more stable than other RRs.
Wow graphics changed so much during this decade this game was only released in 2000 and now look at games like Need For Speed and the Comming out DRIVE CLUB for ps4 :O!
Got to hand it to Genesis for Axelay as well. Far better sound. Actually a very good little tune there I think on the Genesis it sounds like music. On the SNES it just sounded like "some game".
The level 6 and 7 courses have insane difficulty.
I can only beat them like once in 50 attempts.
Really love this series! reminds me of when the arcade was king in the 90s! I hope they have a really good looking entry on the PS4 with loads of Reiko Nagase based extra's! they should take some cues from the Dead or alive games! maybe have a car show room mode where you can pose Reiko next to the cars! or something like that
mark if you haven't had a fish and fungus pizza you haven't lived.
