• Me vs Fujiwara no Moko...
A video of me fighting and slightly less barely defeating the immortal phoenix girl, Fujiwara no Mokou
Fujiwara no Mokou (even her name depicts greatness) is the ex-boss of the game Imperishable Night, the 8th installment of the Touhou Project. The Touhou Project is a series of danmaku shooters. Danmaku is a term than can be loosely translated (and quite aptly in my opinion) into "curtain of fire" or "bullet hell", thus denoting game were high density in bullet is more important that a lot of enemies. The series was created and is managed by the one man team Team Shanghai Alice, composed only of ZUN.
A little Touhou/Japanese folktale history lesson: Mokou is the disliked daughter of an aristocrat. Said aristocrats was humiliated by Kaguya Horaisan, a "commoner", when he asked for her hand in matrimony and she responded by giving him an impossible request. Kaguya, being actually a Lunarian princess, went back to the moon and left behind with the emperor the Japanese version of the fountain of youth, the Hourai Elixir. This elixir was scheduled to be destroyed by the emperor's order, but was stolen last minute by Mokou, who had made her objective in life to avenge her father and kill Kaguya. This is how Mokou achieved her immortality and created a bitter rivalry with Kaguya, who happens to also be immortal due to the elixir, therefore creating a vicious cycle. [Kaguya's story is HEAVILY based on a Japanese folktale called "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter". Wiki for it]
Back to Mokou. Some fans argue whether she is really possessed by a phoenix or not. Personally, I believe she is possessed. This would explain how she gained the ability to manipulate fire. You can clearly see in her spellcards this manipulation, as well as her immortality after each spell since you technically kill her each time...
Another thing about Mokou's fight is that her non-spellcards are, IMO, more difficult than most of her spellcards. They move at such an insane speed is absurd. I had captured both Honest Mans Death and Fujiyama Volcano before, but I had never survived without bombs her last non-spellcard. I believe shes unique in that department. Still, out of the three ex-bosses I had battled, I enjoyed this battle the most. It keeps you in your feet with fast paced action. She wasn't as difficult as I expected... but not by much.

To answer your question about "Nazi Symbols"; Although we all recognize it as the symbol used by the Nazis, before that, and still to this day, in Buddhism, it is a symbol of good luck. This being a game about Japanese/Buddhist Folklore, it makes sense when you think about it. (Note, if it was sarcasm, and I Failed to realize it, please, disregard this)
In this case, however, I will add that only the red patterns are manjis. The blue ones are actually swastikas.

In this spell especially it isn't a nazi symbol, its a buddhist symbol. Its only a nazi symbol if it is slanted. ZUN makes a lot of references to buddhism in the touhou series.

@@kajetus0688 wrong, the symbol (which isnt only buddhist but of other religions too) can be oriented in both directions in the original form too. there is even a religious symbol composed of both versions one beside the other.
also, fun fact, the chinese word " 卍 " (wan) can mean "infinity", so thats probably why it appears in mokou's spells

I don't know why I would say this, but mokou must be like a glass cannon. She unleashes fast attacks, but every time after a spellcard she needs to be resurrected, but other people/youkai don't need to be resurrected after every single spellcard...
that's because the heroine don't need to holding back against her, she will fine if they're literally killed. when beating up other youkai/people, the heroin hold back her power so her opponent don't die.
beside, mokou is faced by 2 people, What do you think if you must faced most feared shrine maiden, and most powerful youkai at the same time?
I'm pretty sure Mokou just... doesn't dodge. She's immortal and has ran out of fucks to give.
So hits that would just glance and scrape and bruise some people, she takes directly to the skull.
She is still a human. I'd imagine after every spell she dies because of all the bullets she took.

0:51 I was desperate to get that spellcard done myself without any help from others, and it's pretty much the first ever spellcard from an extra boss (save for midbosses).
Also the theme fits well with Mokou's spellcards. Every time I encounter each spellcard of hers, plus her outfit, plus her theme song, I always feel that New Year's Eve just came too early.
Awesome! You're so lucky to be able to see all of those bullets. I want to play more and get good, but my eyes suck and I lose track of everything too easily.

Does yukari have a tiny ran yakumo that attacks nearby enemies and doesn't stop until it dies?
I think is a normal sized Ran Yakumo that is rolled into a ball.
But yeah, as long as Yukari manages to hit at some point of her attack an enemy, Ran will continue to home to that enemy.
Yeah, imagine doing that in real life.
Yukari is pretty OP in this game, basically has an infinite version of her spell card from PCB "Shikigami - Ran Yakumo"

when it starts from the right, stick to the left part of your row, and graze it by going right, and then rinse and repeat the other part.
Still come back to these videos occasionally. Unfortunate all the annotations went with the youtube changes

The trick to Honest Man's Death, when you hear the laser, move towards it. When the thin line materializes, your position at the time is when the hitbox will materialize.

hmm I think Honest man's death is one of the easiest spellcards once you get used to it though (theres just me who can't capture her first spellcard)
I love the fact that Mokou casually lost the battle like every boss but just continue it with a non-spell name “resurrection”
with everlasting Phoenix's tail, the specal effects make them more difficult to see which always seems to get me D
For some odd reason, whenever I see Everlasting "Phoenix's tail" I think of Forbidden Barrage "Starbow Break"

IN is awkward because Deathbombs are very easy to do in it whereas in all other games they're ridiculously hard. Training via MoF and PCB will get you used to bombing when you -think- you'll get hit, and you'll lose less lives.
And here I am, just barely finishing EoSD. Boy do I have a long way to go.

@@AnthonyLopez-kq7yk the laser hasnt "fully formed" yet so its hitbox is inactive. Mokou will make the laser fully form wherever your original position was, so you just need to go towards the laser to avoid that point where it fully forms

Such trolling, every spell card she explodes which in most other Touhou's indicates you can relax, than just goes "Naw Bro." than comes back!
I donno why, but I always see Hollow Giant "Woo" as Mokou somehow summoning a golem or ogre of sorts and having said monster attack you with its claws.

i beat kaguya on easy and then unlocked the extra stage. the extra stage doesn't have difficulty settings. i was not fucking ready.
I figured out, the laser materializes when it reaches the point where you first were, so to dodge it you just have to go towards it ^.^
Lord, I agree with you raak1010. That last non-spell is complete BS. If the bullets targeted you like on Suwako that'd be one thing, but they don't here.
I was readin the history excerpt and find it a bit of historical irony that part of the title for Kaguya Houiraisan's boss theme is "flight of the bamboo cutter". =)

I actually managed to beat this boss, and it's my only Extra clear. I probably would have cleared Ran first if it weren't for me screwing up the stage so many times.
I don't know if anyone has answered your question already (the one about the woo), but if you had read the manga 3x3 Eyes, you would know about it :D
A Woo (or Wu, sometimes, the translation is a bit off) is a human or demon whose soul is hosted by a sort of three-eyed god. Thefore, the Woo cannot die until the God dies (and they have long life spans), and becomes the protector of him/her. Maybe thats the meaning of "hollow" Giant - a Protector without soul.
16 games are out there but this is the only Extra Stage I've cleared 😔
I guess you can stay on the left side or right side of the screen and dodge the red bullets. Or up side for a harder one.

Moukou seems like one of the easier EX bosses. also Phoenix tail and looks suspiciously like Starbow break... but less chaotic and more... glowy.
She can reencarnate...AWESOME!

Cheap way to clear Mokou's "Flaw of the Forgiving Shrine":
Stay in either top corners as your youkai partner or as Reimu.
Apparently, the bird/spirit things WILL NOT fire talismans if your character is on them...
And Mokou NEVER moves to the corner. She'll come close to it but NEVER really touch it, since her wings get in the way.
Took me about 10~ tries before I started playing around and found out about that...

Honest mans death is a very easy spell.... It just takes a while to do little movements into the lazer. It is scary
