A video of me fighting and barely defeating the sister of the devil herself, Flandre Scarlet
Flandre Scarlet (Is kind of an epic name) is the ex-boss of the game Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the 6th installment of the Touhou Project. The Touhou Project is a series of danmaku shooters. Danmaku is a term than can be loosely translated (and quite aptly in my opinion) into "curtain of fire" or "bullet hell", thus denoting game were high density in bullet is more important that a lot of enemies. The series was created and is managed by the one man team Team Shanghai Alice, composed only of ZUN.
Flandre is a pretty interesting character. Her wings aren't those of a normal vampire, yet you can clearly see them flutter which means they are real... more or less. She's mentally insane (or so they say, is more like very eccentric personality), yet that kind of make her a lovable character. And her existence is full with symbolism and references. Ok, maybe I exaggerated symbolism, but it does have references.
She's the first Ex-boss of the Touhou series Window games and makes it clear WHY she is an Ex-boss. Personally I believe she isn't using her full danmaku potential. Most Ex-bosses show their non-danmaku abilities in their fight one way or another. For someone whose ability can be called Destruction of Anything and Everything, you would expect a pretty chaotic battle with random explosive danmakus here and there, but no, it doesn't happen. But it does happen against Utsuho (SA last boss) manipulation of nuclear fusion AND against Mokou. (IN Ex-boss)
Oh well, she still gave one heck of a fight, though I believe it was more difficult getting to her with my lives intact (Damn Patchouli and her Royal Flare AND Philosopher Stones.

Posting this in the hope some people will see it before commenting and continuing flooding my inbox with Touhou vs Undertale shenanigans:
Sans is a different kind of difficult. Frankly, Sans battle has more in common with a manic shooter than a proper bullet hell due to it's high pace. Also, Undertale, and by extension San's fight, are designed for repetition and memorization. While Touhou has some aspect of this, it's to a lesser degree.MUCH lesser.
Finally, most Touhou Ex-boss fight are difficult due to the length of the fight itself and one to three particular spellcards that are particularly difficult. Most of Flan's fight is not difficult as far as bullet hells go. But when you account it's length plus some gateway spells like Maze of Love and Q.E.D, the difficulty increases significantly.
TL;DR: Undertale and Touhou, while both having bullet hell gameplay, play too differently and challenge different skills to compared. But that's my 2 cents

"easier" is sort of subjective. For me it took a while because of your limited supply of lives you get, and pathouli's spells and those FUCKING BOOKS making you waste bombs on dealing with them.

Had done it (and in pacifist nonetheless) without it. Yeah, the patch makes it much easier, but you can get a decent feel of where your hitbox is without it.
well not so for me between my questionable hitbox and some of the bullets questionable hitbox lunatic is far out of reach. (then why is extra so easy)
Is a matter of endurance. In extra you just have to go through approximately 20 minutes of stage that you repeat over and over. However, in Lunatic you have 6 stages and the run takes >30 minutes. And practising Lunatic is not as easy and intuitive as Extra.
Flandre is the easiest of the extras (I think she is, excluding the PC-98 games). If Okuu or the bitch that is Hijiri Byakuren were extra, they'd be hell. Even more on a ultra patch.

+Avinavi Honestly speaking, Sans' patterns are harder. But Sans is a relatively short fight and losing it is not as punishing as losing against Flan. You lose against Sans, you just load and jump right back into the action. Lose against Flan and you need to redo the entire stage.

@Cesar Melendez Undertale is the dark souls of bullet hells. Not actually very difficult, incredibly overrated, and despite being lauded as the most challenging game of its genre, it's still casually beaten by everyone who plays it relatively quickly.
There are other characters in Touhou other than Flandre that are hard

Hina Face Since Flandre has literally 9 HP bars, I'm surprised Raak even whittled her HP down enough to go with the beat of the song at the same rate. Last time I saw all hell break lose was, well...this. If Flandre didn't hold back during any of her fights she'd have obliterated ever yfoe.

No, the extremely difficult boss you can encounter are School Examinations. There are about eight to sixteen stages of the boss fight, each differing in tactics and bullets.

I have to record everything separate when I play on the piano 😅 I record the melody, then the backup, and some lower sounds for bass and boom, you have “U.N. Owen was Her?”! The piece is too hard to play all together, for me.
i learnt the entire song on piano in 2 weeks tops and can play it without error, even made an original arrangement myself.

Playing this on a violin with a cheese string when you have no violin or cheese string and are high on PCP.
i remember i almost beat Flandre using no bombs nor lives. but i couldn't last through the final few seconds of Ripples of 495 years... Damn you, Flandre!

SuperCliffBurton Hmm, to actually try to be realistic here: Over the years Sonic has come to be displayed as more and more ridiculously powerful to the point where he just runs into enemies and kills them that way without even going Super.
So for old Sonic I agree he's not that strong, but I believe Super Sonic could sorta keep up with a Super Saiyan, Hyper Sonic sorta with a Super Saiyan 2... but once Super Saiyan 3 rolls around the corner we have a dead Hedgehog. xD

As of BotG, Goku went far off. Since he absorbed the God form, he is essentially always SSJG, that's why he could keep up with Beerus in his mere SSJ1 state after he suddenly switched from SSJG form back to normal (as that was the point where he absorbed the power).

Undertale and Touhou focus on different things. Undertale is more about memorization and reaction time, while Touhou is more about paying attention to multiple things at once, thinking about what you’re going to do next and agility.
Also, does anyone here doesn’t give a fuck about whether Undertale or Touhou is harder and just wants to enjoy the video?
God, going back and watching these years later makes me miss the little sticky notes of commentary these vids used to have. It was always fun to see your little reactions/lore bits in them.

Actually, Flandre its not THAT hard, yeah sure its tricky as fuck, but once you know what to do its soo easy, i mean seriously, i reached Catadiotic, and that's saying something
hardest parts about touhou 6 extra stage is uhh
1. Lives less than any other extra stage in the winows era
2. QED
3. Patchy
and there will be none can be pretty hard and daunting especially the first part but it if you have a semi-consistent route for it you should be fine

I was dum and didnt memo patchy so I kept going into flan with 4 lives instead of 5
which worked but meant I had to not die for 3 spells in a row by starbow break (not counting starbow as the 4th bc I mainly just used a safespot for that spell) just to have 2 lives by QED
overall it falls on the harder spectrum of extra stages but not the definitive hardest
for some its one of the harder ones and for some it's somewhere within the middle difficulty wise

It's one thing when the bullets are in a somewhat predictable pattern. It's another when the bullets are completely RNG-dependent.
+MarnigePlayer Yes, they're slow. It doesn't help. You know what's even worse than bullets that come at you really fast? Bullets that move slowly and stick around while you try to dodge even more bullets. With fast bullets, you run. With slow bullets, you have to think about where, how, when, and whether to run. Then you have to actually do it. It's like a maze where the walls kill you and are all moving in different directions.

I've beaten this boss and can confirm that most showers have easily exploitable safe spots in one place or another.

This is an old comment, but not all of these attacks really have patterns. "Four of a Kind," "Starbow Break," and "Ripples of 495 Years" are all randomized to some extent.

You can't really compare the difficulty of Tohou and dark souls. Tohou's difficulty is judged by how much stuff is on screen. Dark souls difficulty is based on what the enemies themselves do. Two COMPLETELY different styles.

as for the reason of such intense grazing, besides awarding extra points by itself, notice how the decrease-over-time of bonus points for boss spellcards slows/stops, or with a fast enough grazing, the bonus may even be maxed-out. so yeh. 'tis a genuine, major scoring run with every possible scoring method used. i dare not imagine how much practice that may have took... D:

For lavatien spellcard you can go to the top right and dodge her swipes, the swing around won't hit you and you can shoot her by dodging it as intended, then dodge the other swing and repeat.

I remember watching this video a while ago(maybe I've seen it even longer ago?) surely didn't think that I would get that quickly into Touhou or finally clear that Extra Stage today.
I did it without hitbox patch(only things I had added were the DX converter so there's no lag as well as vpatch for a 2x resolution), took me quite a while but in the last few days I finally managed to break through some of the last few spellcards(not having as much trouble with the last one, it's still difficult but people seem to have more trouble with it than I had) and finish that run today, was close near the end but I did it.
Finally Flandre.
Such an epic fight imo although I never beat her I always got to last phase and died this vid makes me want to give it another go for people who never played against Flandre the fight is even harder than it looks in this vid anyway nice work.
