I have learned to watch all the SU Skill Builders even on simple subjects I think I know all about. I have been using SU for many years. But many times these Skill Builders teach me something I didn't know. This is one of those times.

I use these methods all the time and it makes a big difference. I also use arbitrary rotation on the z axis to add more variety to proper 3D objects

Color change was new for me, thanks for the tip! But I'm always having issues when using face me plants. For ex. when I place it in a particular place the model, it looks good that way but from another angle, it messes up. Or another face me plant can come to front when actually it was supposed to be behind. You know, we are grading plants low to high in landscaping. One solution is to use non-face me plants; 3d models but they are also very high polygon models which makes the drawing 'heavy' and thinking of maybe hundreds of them, may not be the best idea. I would love to hear from anyone who got tips on that.

Thanks! And the FaceMe issues you're describing may be because of your transparency settings. Under 'Styles/Edit/Face' you'll see an option to switch it from 'Faster' to 'Nicer'. Let me know if that works.

For trees one thing that would definitely be different on every tree is the trunk. Shape, diameter, color, root flare will all vary from tree to tree. I think changing the trunk would add a lot to achieving your desired variation.

Agreed. The way to do that is what I mentioned to make one or more 'unique'.

I want to use this technique to vary the color of tile in a backsplash. I don't seem to be able to use the color variation in Windows. Each time I paint a tile with a color and then use the slider to vary the next one, the tile I just did changes too. My component is the Default color. Does the color trick work differently in Windows?

I'll check it on windows and report back. In my experience, it works when painting the outside of the component to be different. If painted on the inside, directly to the faces, it will apply to all of them the same.
