How to Correct Someone in Sin (Fraternal Correction)

  • How do we go about correcting someone in sin without making things worse?
Fraternal correction can vary drastically based on what kind of state the person is in. For example, you wouldn’t approach a person in an abusive or self-destructing behavior the same way you would approach a person in the public eye. Today, however, we’re going to be talking about the basics of fraternal correction, and what to do when you feel called to speak to someone in your life about their relationship with God.

Brotherly correction is to give correction, advice, or even rebuke out of care for the person because you love him as a brother, or her as a sister; if you don't care about whatever happens to the person anyway and just simply want to look righteous or good in front of others, then that is not a fraternal correction.

Every point here is true. I’ve practiced these points without knowing and can testify that practicing these points have opened the door to much healing to others and to bring people to Christ. When you show people you care about them-over a period of time and not just one moment in time-people are more likely to listen to what you have to say when the time comes to rebuking a person of their ongoing sins because they have a rapport with you that shows your intentions are true and for their own good.

I do feel sad for them, but they are openly critical of Catholicism, so feel as though i would be wasting my time. Also, because I am so young in the Church, having attacks on it feels as though it weakens my faith. I became Catholic because the only friend I had who as doing well was Catholic. My life is now everything I could wish it to be. Hoping that what happenen to me will happen to them . Jesus describes what to do if you see a brother or sister of the Lord sinning in Scripture. First tell them what they are doing which is sin and if they don't listen to you bring in another person and if they still refuse to listen instruct them to go before their Priest and if they still refuse to listen treat them as a non-believer. This applies to other Baptized Christians not towards the Unbaptized. It was what Christians done they did separate themselves from those who lived in mortal sin including family members. It's sort of like an intervention for a loved one addicted to something you make them choose between your relationship with them or with their substance this is called though love.

Lord Jesus corrected the buyers and sellers in the temple by making a whip out of cord. He had a zealous anger against the sin, in the same way I also feel the degree by which we correct, whether it’s being gentle and kind, or a little firm to the point of being harsh (not bcoz we like it) in order to discourage repetition of the act, aft being so patient, also largely depends on the type n severity of the sin. Though I don’t like to do it and it’s painful for me, it’s sometimes very necessary to nip things in the bud by sometimes rebuking somewhat severely, (of course without raising ones voice or shouting and as I mentioned earlier, after having exercised much patience by the Grace of Almighty God). Speak the Truth in love

I’m sorry for your family’s suffering. Remembering prayer AND fasting, and if she does restore communication. as St. Augustine noted, talking to God more about your daughter than m your daughter about God. Currently facing our greatest trial in parenting, clinging to the certainty that God, our father, loves her even more then we as parents do, and He will give us the graces we need to persevere in Love.May your daughter open even a slight sliver of her heart to Him and He send someone into her life Who will help her be restored in relationship with Him and you.

This message is so hard I'm trying so much to do God's work I feel it's getting worse than better. My mother 87 is so far from the faith that she is taking my children and others with her down the same road. Her belief God is merciful and not to worry and sinning. No need for the Sacramentos. My whole family rejects and believe I attend a cult. If I give them a small text of a inspirering video or message like this fire and brimstone comes upon me. I'm now not allowed to be amounst family gatherings. I can't even ask them to join me in praying or mass. Should I shake the sand and walk away? I'm alone now but at least I have God and my church family.

What would be appropriate way to tell a woman speaking in church that she should be silent?

Anybody in a relationship with the Lord has a right to make their passion for him known at opportune and appropriate times, male and female. That is if I’m to assume this conundrum is from Corinthians, where women had only begun to be educated in God’s word. That said, this is a very schismatic and denominational topic, so I may be giving you irrelevant information for your congregation.

I just tell them they are sinning, if they ask me how I tell them how, if they get angry I keep my stance, if they call me a hateful Christian I ask how it's hateful that I want someone else to go to heaven

@@tatronhox8711 For me I carw about peoples sins but I also realize that lots of people who don't care if they sin or not. So if they are open or have dedicated themselves to the Lord, I hope I would correct them but truth be told I haven't ran into anyone like that

Usually, if someone around me is sinning I honestly feel uncomfortable. I do not have the strength to correct someone unless what they said or did is highly offensive to me. It is difficult to admonish another adult or your equal. They may not listen. They may become angry. They may stop talking to you. It may lead to unnecessary drama. I think we should check out intentions when we are correcting others. Are we speaking the truth to help another or deflect from our flaws? Are we harsh or are we compassionate?

Hateful Christian is an oxymoron and most people who respond like this are either convicted by your statement or are delusional, if they truly believe anyone besides God has the power to judge them.

So why isn't correcting Pope Francis about the Mayan idol worship at the Vatican Amazon Synod October 2019? Not a word ! Why.? The Panchamma idols were brought into St Peter's and into a church nearby dedicated to the BVM. Pope Francis actually ordered the idols to be rescued when dumped into the Tiber.

I'm going to chime in here I'm not a youngin anymore there is no such thing as doing it wrong when you are telling them the truth. I would say discern how to do this but never back down from saying something that's true. We also have to understand that we can't just keep tiptoeing to make people feel comfortable trying to do the right thing that's not what it's about.

Part of our faith includes the spiritual works of mercy, although I think this video is about how to do it charitably. Why would you not want to correct a pagan friend any less than your Christian friend?

    • @josephjackson1956

Correct them as if they are in your Christian communion. Christ’s message doesn’t stop at just your church-goers. Look at the epistles; they are all after the people who are pagan.

You might want to correct them in terms they can understand, if they see your point and you have a good relationship with them you can explain the christian point of view as well
