    “Murder on the Mississippi” is an adventure game port for the Family Computer (Famicom) originally release for the Commodore 64 and Apple II, released by Activision in 1986.
    In “Murder on the Mississippi”, the player controls a detective duo as player characters, and aims for the ending by indicting the true culprit while obtaining testimonies and evidence from multiple non-player character suspects in this graphic adventure game that uses character movement.
    There is a command “examine the evidence” that is only displayed when the player character returns to the start point, and some of the collected evidence must be applied to this command in order for the story to progress.
    The testimonies of the suspects can be saved as evidence by using the “memo” command, and can be used as items to draw out new testimonies by presenting them to other suspects. However, there is a limit to the number of memos that can be made, and if this limit is exceeded, old memos will be deleted, so taking memos of unimportant matters can lead to a deadlock. What seems like mere gossip at first glance may actually be important testimony, and it is not easy to judge whether a suspect’s story is important testimony or just small talk. Also, suspects only give testimony that displays the memo command once, and if you ask them the same thing again, they will only reply with “I’ve already told you”. In other words, if you miss out on “memo”, you won’t be able to get important information and you’ll end up in a deadlock.
    Jaleco obtained a license from Activision and ported the game to the Family Computer (Famicom) and MSX2.
    Among these, the Famicom version has been significantly modified in terms of functionality and operability, and there are the following differences:
    The player character’s movement is slow.
    There is no save or password function. In the Activision version, if you get a game over or get stuck, you can start over from where you saved your data, but in the Famicom version, you have to start the game over from the beginning.
    One of the non-player characters, Godwin, is omitted and his room is empty.
    In the Commodore 64 version, there were rooms that you couldn’t enter, but in the Famicom version, you can enter them (there is an “instant death trap” set up there).
    The conversations and lines of dialogue of the very American characters, which are unfamiliar to Japanese people, are direct translations of the original text. Despite being a Famicom software without a rating, the word “prostitution” is displayed, and characters use dirty language.
    There are several instant death traps in each cabin of the passenger ship that lead to game over (Room 1 and Room 14: Pitfall, Room 16: Knife flying towards Sir Charles’ head). All of these can be avoided by moving out of the way of the trap. These instant death traps only activate for Sir Charles. Therefore, depending on how the game unfolds, Sir Charles himself may become a victim of the incident before finding Brown. Even if you identify the culprit and solve the case, you will reach the ending without revealing who set up these traps or why they exist in the story.
