Jaws (NES) Playthrough

  • A playthrough of LJN's 1987 license-based action game for the NES, Jaws.
Jaws was one of the first NES games to bear the LJN logo when it debuted in November of 1987 alongside The Karate Kid ( • The Karate Kid (NES) P... ) and Gotcha! The Sport!
Coming along about four months after Jaws: The Revenge belly-flopped into theaters with a resounding thud, the game was ostensibly posed as a tie-in to the film. It has no connection whatsoever to the movie's plot, but that was probably for the best.
Instead of having you satisfy a personal vendetta against a psychic shark, Jaws for the NES keeps things simple: the great white shark has been hanging out in the harbor, and it's your job to get rid of him.
As you steer your boat through the local waters, you'll occasionally be told that you've hit something. This kicks off a "random encounter" shooter-style stage against the local sealife in which you dive into the water to kill rays, jellyfish, and baby sharks with a harpoon gun.
These creatures drop all sorts of collectable items: stars give you bonus points, crabs boost your swimming speed, and seashells act as currency that can be traded for equipment upgrades.
If you kill enough baby sharks in a scene, you'll be scuttled off to a bonus game that involves dropping depth charges from a plane to kill chains of jellyfish for extra shells.
The first time you pull into a port after collecting enough shells, you'll receive a tracking device that beeps whenever Jaws comes near. Once you've collected a few more shells, you can return to the home port to power-up your harpoon gun, and after going back and forth to upgrade your gun a few times, you'll be given access to a submarine for improved maneuverability.
Eventually you'll come face-to-face with Jaws. To win, you'll need to whittle down Jaws' health in the shooter segments. Once you've emptied his power gauge, the game shifts to a first-person view and Jaws charges. As he approaches, you'll need to set off a strobe device that will make him angrily rear up out of the water, and the moment Jaws reveals his white underbelly, you hit the B button to violently stab him with your boat.
Jaws has been harshly criticized over the years, but I find it to be a fairly fun game. It feels like an early 80s arcade shooter that has been dressed up with a few creative mechanics to give it a bit of depth for the home console crowd. The premise is entertaining and bizarre, the graphics are appealing and bright, and the controls are fine - it's a pretty solid effort despite being way too short and easy.
One interesting thing to note is that the game was created by Westone (the company that made the Wonder Boy arcade game), working as a subcontractor for Atlus. LJN may have been the publisher, but the game had some solid talent standing behind it.
It's not a masterpiece, but Jaws is a much better game than that LJN logo might lead you to believe.

As rough as it is, JAWS is as nostalgic as the NES can get for me. It was the first NES game I ever played, and I still come back to it even today.
One week before I started first grade, back in Fall 1988, my dad rented an NES from our local video store along with this and Rambo. My expectations for what the NES could do were non-existent, as the only other video game I had ever played was a single run at the arcade version of TRON.

As a kid, this game baffled me and I wrote it off as over my head. What a weird and ambitious way to translate a movie that should be next to impossible to turn into an interactive video game. Stuff like this, even if it ultimately fails, really helped influence my taste and ability to accept new or even abstract ideas. Jaws, like so many other weird NES games, has so much more value for being an ambitious failure than the mediocre also ran it could've been.

This game was great I know AVGN liked to hate on it b/c of its dev company but it truly was a masterpiece I remember being a kid wanting to scuba dive and shoot the eels with my harpoon and fly in a plane over the Atlantic dropping bombs on jellyfish with that music playing!! Such good memories! Took me years to get to the end. Didn't know how to lvl up didn't realize u had to go back and forth to the ports twice to get to lvl 2 weps. The submarine was op btw! That music at the end is lit, too! Ending is kinda dumb, but w/e it's an NES game we didn't play them for the ending we played for the experience!!

While this game has a strong cult following, it's even part of a mini tribute shrine at Universal Studios Florida where they used to have the ride (which got replaced with Diagon Alley). Thing is that when the ride closed, they moved the replica of Bruce the shark to the San Francisco region next to a bar called Chez Alcatraz, and on the left of the bar, you'll see a boat wheel which has a lot of jaws memorabilia including a Jaws cartridge for the NES.
P.S. if you're 21 and up, be sure to get the Ocean Attack drink. You'll be in for an entertaining moment there.

Fuck this game. You get hit once, aside from losing a life, you lose:
    -1 power level
    -Half your shells
    -ALL damage done to Jaws
-Even the radar, so you need to collect it again
What's the point of even having a life counter? You might as well reset the game every time you die. At least then, the enemies are easy again. I can't even fucking make it to the harbor because every centimeter I move, I gotta fight fish for 5 straight minutes. Even battles in Final Fantasy don't take that long. Never have I played a game so boring and so frustratingly difficult at the same time. It's weird because the difficulty fluctuates between playthroughs. It's either short and easy, or drawn out and infuriating. No inbetween.

The uninspiring and tedious gameplay, the droning music and the fact that Westone, the Wonder Boy devs, made *_this_* truly baffles me. How do you go from a great series of challenging platformers with RPG mechanics in them to a painfully boring shooter with RPG mechanics in it? But hey, at least you can beat this game in 10 minutes.
