"A German TV news outlet showed House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) at a "purity ball" in 2015 with his daughter Hannah, who was 13 years old at the time, ABC News reported on Wednesday.
"The German news segment documented Johnson and his family preparing for and then attending a purity ball, a controversial formal dance event, popular among some conservative Christians, that gained notoriety in the early 2000s," reported Will Steakin. The biggest problem in this religious community is they DO FOLLOW THE RULES. They marry the first person they meet at age 18, SO THEY CAN HAVE SEX without feeling guilty. I am a divorce lawyer, I see this a lot. Divorcing 22 year olds.
Perhaps the problem is these people are jumping in to divorce too quickly, rather than try and solve their marriage. Not every couple will be the same. Most religions do not agree with divorce either.

These ideas were widely held until the sexual revolution of the 60's - 70's. When these ideas were done away with there was a vast increase in single motherhood, which can be very difficult for both mother and child, very large increase in abortion, which was good for the abortion industry, not so good for women and many women their late 30's wishing for a family, but realizing their fertile years have passed. Just a few things I can think of that are not linked to morality or religion.

I remember telling my daughter at 13 that having sex should be something that was her decision and hers alone. She should not do it because somebody is trying to force her or pressure her. She should not worry about what others think because it is her body and her choice. She should follow her instincts and listen to herself before she listens to anybody else. She went on to excel in college, succeed in a male dominated field for employment, met her husband in her mid 20's, married at 30, and had her first child at 35. She is a strong independent woman who listens to her gut and is with somebody who respects her strengths and encourages her to grow.
Ask yourself why this is so one sided. Why are they not making their sons do a purity ball.
It reflects their own very personal views about men and women. They want their daughters to be "pure and not defile themselves with sex before marriage" but it is a near certainty that many of those men had plenty of sex before and outside of their marriage so their personal beliefs end at the tip of their other, more dominant head. They could care less what their sons' do because "that's just how men are" but if their daughters' do it then "they are whores!" I just see it as out of touch men who want to portray to the world that they have the perfect family and that they are in control of their family to those around them.
Girls are not objects but actual humans with our own thoughts desires and discipline.

This is pretty sick. A 13yr old should not be subjected to this indoctrination. What daughter wants to have their sexuality owned by their father? It’s so inappropriate. It dumps weird guilt on a child at an event to celebrate what is an adult choice.
I went to a Baptist school in Houston where they did this. Made us terrified of sex and what would happen if we had it. Funny thing is, in my class of about 30 ish people, 3 of the girls in my class got pregnant before they graduated. These were sweet, smart, good people who were just brought up in this world where it’s like you feel too guilty to buy a condom because then it means you’re “planning” to have sex, which is a big taboo. But then in the moment when you can’t control yourself, oops. Actually I left that school for public school in ninth grade, and in my public school class of like 800 students, I don’t think I knew of more than one person who got pregnant.
Also, the male principal of my school, behind closed doors, told my 8th grade classmate who rode horses competitively that she should be careful because riding horses could be stimulating and lead to temptation.

I grew up as a conservative Catholic and this is incredibly bizarre and gross to me.

The issue with drilling into a young girls head that sex before marriage is a horrible thing is that doesnt go away after the marriage. I know a few people who waited for this purity crap. Once they married, they still couldn't have sex. They develop a ridiculous mental block. I know a woman who refused to have sex on her honeymoon because she was so afraid. She was also in her 30s and her new husband was none too pleased. Eventually they did consumate the marriage but she decided she only wanted sex when she wanted to get pregnant. They are not even remotely happy but divorce is a "sin". I just can't imagine living that way. Devoting my life to an idea i have zero proof of. Purity balls and all that is just another way to control women starting as early as possible because they do not exist for boys.
There are purity rings for men. But those are in legit churches that are training the boys to have self-control and integrity, instead of becoming porn-addicted losers who see women as nothing more than walking vaginas.
My church taught that sex is _ideal_ when it's saved for marriage, and that doing so helps you avoid having your heart and mind in ADHD mode where you're never satisfied, treating your spouse like they're just one disposable person on the way to the greener grass on the other side of the fence. However, they also taught forgiveness, compassion, and not this cultlike endless shame. They acknowledged that young people have free will and will make life decisions. And they continued to love people who, say, had children outside of marriage (and preached responsibility and commitment into the boys).
A church community that is truly full of love is a rich, wonderful, amazing, and empowering community to grow up in, whether you're a boy or a girl. They're too rare, but they do exist.

Just because you don't hear anything about it doesn't mean teaching for the boys doesn't happen. We didn't have purity balls in the church I grew up in, but young males were taught purity just like young females.

I come from the Deep South, and my parents both came from strict Southern Baptist families in the Bible Belt. Thank the Gods my mother was also a military brat who lived all over the world and was exposed to different cultures and traditions and that instilled a sense of tolerance and love for diversity. When she left my father, she took me and my sister to our true home in New Orleans when we were very little. I am eternally grateful for that, because we were also exposed to a very diverse and tolerant community that celebrates our differences and our unique backgrounds. My mom’s family is from East Tennessee and we don’t see much of them, and my dad’s family is from southern Mississippi.., They have these purity balls and virginity oaths that young girls have to participate in. Not the boys though. Their virginity is of no consequence. They’re just expected to have sex with multiple different people before marriage and nobody cares. Like the woman said on Newsmax, it’s ownership. The father owns the girls body until a suitable husband is found and then ownership is transferred to the husband who now owns the woman’s body. It’s archaic and it’s proven to be unhealthy and psychologically damaging. I especially love the comment from Mike Johnson’s wife saying they don’t even discuss contraception because sex before marriage is out of the question… I believe people should be allowed to live their lives however they choose as long as it doesn’t harm anyone else. This is right on the line of being harmful

@@caps900I don't think so, I've heard sex is only for having children in some religions (I'm guessing the extreme/far right versions of religion), correct me if I'm wrong.
Which might explain why some people like Johnson's wife don't want to teach teens _or_ adults about contraception or even ban it outright. That means they don't want it to ever be taught or available to married people, probably because they should only have sex for children.
And in far right religion, divorce can be looked down upon even if somebody has a legitimate reason to divorce, though this is hardly mainstream according to Wikipedia.
