For all its considerable flaws, I thoroughly enjoy this film. The very best part of it, of course, is this intense and marvelously Gothic score by the great Jerry Goldsmith. It's goosebump stuff, evocative and exciting. I love it!
The Shadow was the main inspiration behind Batman. If you think about it, there are many parallels, particularly with his alter ego Lamont Cranston - he's practically Bruce Wayne. The comic book was also one of the first comics to showcase the darker and grittier side to superheroes, something that's much more popular nowadays. In many ways, The Shadow was way ahead of its time - great superhero!
One of the Shadow's identities is KENT Allard, and of course the Superman to The Shadow's Batman is CLARK Savage Jr, the Man of Bronze... Who had a Fortress of Solitude. The Shadow fought INTERnational CRIME. And so on. For DC to be so pissy now about its brands when they have shall we say borrowed freely from better sources is a Disney-esque abomination.
The Intrada special collection is the only way to get the complete soundtrack (which is on 2 discs). Even the movie doesn't have the complete song heard over the end credits!
Excellent compilation. I come back to listen to it again every now and then. The Shadow is my favorite soundtrack of all time and I've been listening to (and occasionally creating) soundtracks since the eighties. It has pieces I remember from the movie but that are not included in the soundtrack's CD release (at least not the one I have).
I think The Shadow would be a good subject for a stealth-action video game in the same vein as Deus Ex or Thief II: The Metal Age. I love 1930s hard-boiled detective novels and film noir, and I sometimes wonder why video game developers have used that period as a setting for games much. Cyberpunk and steampunk are great, but I think they're getting a bit worn out.
Yes, as long as it is a gaming masterpiece in the vein of Thief III Deadly Shadows, Deus Ex Human Revolution/Mankind Divided, and LA. Noire instead of a comic book to game flop like so many that have been made.
SWEET! FINNALLY ANOTHER TRACK!!!! If any one truly loves The Shadow, who would be interested in our current project, "The Shadow Strikes"? It has the tone of the film but takes it darker and is in black and white.
I once dreamed up a really cool superhero character while sleeping and was going to write it all down once I woke up, then I realized, it's The Shadow. My brain was just taking some of the things I saw in the movie and running with them a bit. I'd say they should make a new movie, but they won't outdo what the 1994 movie did, unless they get somebody who's a serious fan of this character to helm it.
Fue una película que su exhibición fue efímera por esa razón no tuve la oportunidad de verla en cine en 1994,hasta que la ví en formato VHS en mi casa en 1998.
Why was this movie not a blockbuster? Baldwin is awesome! OMG that laugh! The music is great. Even the humor I thought was perfect. And MIller was the best thing since Caroline Munro!
I would love to see Robert Eggers do a film about The Shadow. He is only interested in period pieces, but the film could be set during the 30's. Either that or Sam Raimi finally get a chance to make the film he's always wanted, it's why he did the film Darkman. He couldn't get the rights to The Shadow, which is his favorite character.
The main inspiration for Batman was Judex. Like Batman, he was a millionaire who lived in a big mansion. He had a big cave under the mansion, where he kept his costumes, cars and equipment. He had a hidden cave from which he drove his big black car at night to fight evil. He dressed as a big bat. Bob Kane always said that Judex became Batman.
Judex was the inspiration for the Shadow. Bob Kane and Bill Finger stated that The Shadow was the inspiration for Batman, which is obvious from the first few Batman stories
The movie was mind candy for classic car buffs, from the Packard in Tibet to Moe's cab- a Cord 812 touring car. In all respects, it was a "period" movie that never missed a note.
I may be completely nuts here, and I apologize if I upset any hard core batman fans, but I always pictured this theme being part of the original batman movie themes.
The studios will often direct the composers to create themes similar to other films of the same genre. Goldsmith was likely given that order and then made something similar---only he made it much more interesting. Kind of like Mozart taking Salieri's boring music and making something much much better. "Oh, grazi, Signore!"
Yes, for me it was the casting, especially of the main villain. no offense to the talented John Lone, but the reincarnation of Genghis Khan he is not! Still love this movie, however. Alec Baldwin is, as they used to say, a movie star. Nice work by Ian McKellan, too.
Alec Baldwin did his level best and the film looks gorgeous, but the script is too deliberately juvenile in places (and too cutsey nostalgic) and it falls between it's mixed objectives as a piece of entertainment. Great cast and there's some good dialogue, but it doesn't come together. Goldsmith's score was a welcome return to larger, more elaborate scoring.
This film is such a frustrating mixture of the superb (visuals, soundtrack) and the really lame (humour, some of the casting, dialogue). One of Goldsmith's best soundtracks, which is saying a LOT. Visually stunning too. But Tim Curry is hopelessly miscast and over-the-top, the story is high camp (degenerating into farce), and the dialogue is often puerile. What a pity.
The Shadow: Best dressed superhero of the past century.
This movie, The Phantom, and The Rocketeer all RULED my childhood.
+Josiah St. Yeah, three very underrated 90s flicks. I'd add Darkman to the list.
Same here dude
Then, gentlemen. We're in agreement. Our childhoods rocked. 🤘🏻
Yes to the holy trinity!!
Those movies you mentioned are so underrated . They were all very good.
Another fabulous Goldsmith score.
Absolutely perfect for this movie...
RIP Jerry
It's definitely the most "Tyrese" score of Goldsmith's career 😊😅😂.
For all its considerable flaws, I thoroughly enjoy this film. The very best part of it, of course, is this intense and marvelously Gothic score by the great Jerry Goldsmith. It's goosebump stuff, evocative and exciting. I love it!
i loved the movie don't know why it got razed so much. could have been a great franchise
Came out same time as Forest Gump, True Lies, Speed, The Lion King. So it didn't have a chance to stretch its legs without being a known character.
It has flaws?

Actually Batman is a Shadow plagiarism, Bob Kane literally copy word by word one of the pulps of The Shadow.
Cra5hOverride well i think zorro would disagree with you lol.
Tgr2k1 The Mask of Zorro... you mean that movie that came out 1 year after Batman first released?
Heyprinny the first zorro book (the curse of capistrano, referring to Zorro himself) came out in 1919 and the first zorro film was released in 1920
Every time the Shadow OST gets suggested by RUclips I click on it and think, man what a seriously underrated film and score. I loved every bit of it.
What a movie and what a soundtrack!
I waited nearly the length of my life for a proper complete version of this. Snagged a physical copy so fast when Intrada released it
The Shadow is an awesome movie.
langbo9999 "I saved your life, Roy Tam. *It now belongs to me.*"
Roy Tam frowns to the Shadow:
"It does?"
"The sun is shining"
"But the ice is slippery"
"I AM SHIWAN KHAN!!"
Jerry Goldsmith.....Enuff said!
Movie kicks ass.. The Shadow knows..
The Intrada special collection is the only way to get the complete soundtrack (which is on 2 discs). Even the movie doesn't have the complete song heard over the end credits!
One of the greatest soundtracks of all time. This film cannot be beat. Baldwin is fuckingfantastic. Great Alec.
Jerry Goldsmith Power!
I still love this movie
The suit, the make-up and this score are all fabulous
One of my favorite movies

Amazing suite! Well done!
probably one of the best comic book scores

I like in this movie how that skyscraper was invisible then appeared out of nowhere. Like nobody noticed what was being built?😂😂😂😂
No, the entire city was hypnotized to forget it was there. They only see an empty lot.
Great mix!
Fue una película que su exhibición fue efímera por esa razón no tuve la oportunidad de verla en cine en 1994,hasta que la ví en formato VHS en mi casa en 1998.
The Shadow Knows! Hahahahahaha!
Why was this movie not a blockbuster? Baldwin is awesome! OMG that laugh! The music is great. Even the humor I thought was perfect. And MIller was the best thing since Caroline Munro!
This movie had the tragic bad luck to come out the same time as Lion King and Forest Gump. Talk about bad timing.
10:34 - 11:02 wow I remember this
awesome

The shadow in the future?
After the avengers?
After the batman?
Yes please !!! ; /
Batman: "Is that you daddy?"
More that is the poor man that I who identity I steal.
No one has ever heard The Batman laugh.
Few who have heard The Shadow laugh have lived to tell the tale.
4:14 mixes both the terror and awe that is Shiwan Khan.
Nearly perfect comic book movie

Great movie from Russel Mulcahy (Highlander)
yes, the taxi car. Reminds crysler. Good quest music
The movie was mind candy for classic car buffs, from the Packard in Tibet to Moe's cab- a Cord 812 touring car.
In all respects, it was a "period" movie that never missed a note.
The shadow was a radio station in 1930 and the 1940 I'm darleena shanks ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I would love to see a remake of this by Chris Nolan and Tom Hardy as the Shadow/Lamont Cranston
I guess JW scored this just before RIver Wild.
You mean JG?
I may be completely nuts here, and I apologize if I upset any hard core batman fans, but I always pictured this theme being part of the original batman movie themes.

well the batman was influenced by the shadow so not a big suprise
More likely to upset Goldsmith fans who will say this is quintessential Goldsmith !
The Shadow's OST is great, but it's not nearly as unique or interesting as Batman 89's.
Salieri was actually a pretty good composer : ). Not a genius like Mozart, but very well regarded.
..an implosive, explosive device! Or and "atomic bomb".
Hey, that's catchy
Shut up this movie rocks.

This seems like a score Danny Elfman might've learnt a lot from before doing Spider-Man
THIS is a real super hero movie, not like avenger crap ! and nobodies knoes it !
Yes, for me it was the casting, especially of the main villain. no offense to the talented John Lone, but the reincarnation of Genghis Khan he is not! Still love this movie, however. Alec Baldwin is, as they used to say, a movie star. Nice work by Ian McKellan, too.
*Join me...or diiie...*
I loved Alec Baldwin in this so much! I liked him until he started opening up his mouth about politics 😂😅 Please stick to movies dude!!!
I agree 100%, my friend.
La momia

Bellissima musica, al contrario del film che è stato un fiasco completo, tra i peggiori del genere.
batman theme XD
arturo mleziva i agree!!!!!!!!
