Ottoman Empire was founded and destroyed by Turks. If Ataturk wanted to, he could have handed the country back to Sultan as everyone expected. But he decided to modernize Turkey and make it a secular country.
Countries are basically empires that can not expand. Germany turned into an empire (for the 20th century) for only a brief moment because of Adolf Hitler invaded the surrounding countries. All it takes is one leader to make a country enter a war and conquer another nation for it start turning into an Empire.
They fought the byzantines, the austrians, the russians, the mamluks, the persians, the british, the pope, the french and a lot more. Yet still survived for a long time. Quite impressive

Some Eastern European and North African states remained vassals of the Ottoman Empire for upto 500 hundred years. Yet today they retain their languages, their religions, their cultures and traditions. On the other hand, the US wiped all native Americans in mere two centuries, many African counties adopted speaking French only after 50 years of French dominance, all South America become Cristian under the iron fist of colonists in a short period... There are many more similiar examples. Ottoman Empire was an empire after all, but it was far more tolerant than even the single nation states of the same period. There were no aristocracy, and the rights of the citizen were clear and strictly guarded. Even a mere peasent could sue the emperor and demand justice. The only difference of people from cristian nations and other states were being subject to a bit higher taxes. But this was reasoned as the Cristians did not served as soldiers in the army. This slavery practice ended in Ottoman Empire long before Europe. In addition, there were no nationalism, black or white, every people from every nation had equal rights. Meanwhile the Europeans enslaved countless innocent Africans, worked them to their deaths, raped them, robbed them of their most primitive rights just because they are black. They forced nations to abandon their religions, their identities, even used them as expandable foot soldiers on fights on the other side of the world. European countries ruthlessly exploited all the riches from eastern countries through brute force, leaving entire nations in famine and misery. Contrarily, all vassal statse under Ottoman rule had their own rulers selected among their own people, had their own economies, and they owned the empire equally. Most of the administrator class of the Ottomans were chosen among the children of christians, who happily gave their children, knowing that they would become the most elite military officers, governers, and pashas. Even the grand viser (deputy emperor) were usually chosen among them. Contrary to popular belief, Cristian children were not chosen only as soldiers, and the ones to become soldiers were not expandable forces, but they were the elite guard of the emperor. Regarding the only so-called atrocity of the Ottoman Empire, the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Armanians, which was indeed a very sad event, I need to remind you that equal number of innocent people were slaughtered by Armanian gangs in civil war. Russia was continuously provoking these gangs, giving them guns and ammunation. And the government had to banish all Armenians to south in order to secure control in the region as a preparation for Russian attacts during World War I. However the county were poor and there was an ongoing fight with the British Empire at 3 different continents. As a result of the the limited resources and weak chain of command, the situation got out of control, and these Armenians died mostly because of thirst and hunger during their long march to the southern lands. Well, due more advanced communications, transportation and logistics you can achieve in one or two year much more than in past. During Ottomans time, it often took from months to years to siege a city. In WWII, due more advanced technology, you could conquer half continent within one or two years.

Not sure if it was a great caliphate. It's not like anyone takes the Ottoman Caliphs seriously these days when it comes to religious matters. Great state? Sure, for much of its existence. Its funny how so many empires started from the area of Greece (no fellow Turks I am not saying FROM Greeks, chill :d). What I am saying is that by watching these kind of videos I see what a key role the area of Greece had in many empires due to her position and the benefits she offered, even though the mainland is mostly rocky and mountainous. Some Eastern European and North African states remained vassals of the Ottoman Empire for upto 500 hundred years. Yet today they retain their languages, their religions, their cultures and traditions. On the other hand, the US wiped all native Americans in mere two centuries, many African counties adopted speaking French only after 50 years of French dominance, all South America become Cristian under the iron fist of colonists in a short period... There are many more similiar examples.
Ottoman Empire was an empire after all, but it was far more tolerant than even the single nation states of the same period. There were no aristocracy, and the rights of the citizen were clear and strictly guarded. Even a mere peasent could sue the emperor and demand justice. The only difference of people from cristian nations and other states were being subject to a bit higher taxes. But this was reasoned as the Cristians did not served as soldiers in the army.
Even the slaves had strict rights under the Ottoman rule. A slave had to sleep under the same roof with the owner, the slave had to be fed with the same food, slaves had to be paid handsomely to earn their freedom, and they couldn't be worked more than spesfic hours a day, they could mary, they had holidays, they had the right to own their own homes and come and go as they wanted. This slavery practice ended in Ottoman Empire long before Europe. In addition, there were no nationalism, black or white, every people from every nation had equal rights.
Meanwhile the Europeans enslaved countless innocent Africans, worked them to their deaths, raped them, robbed them of their most primitive rights just because they are black. They forced nations to abandon their religions, their identities, even used them as expandable foot soldiers on fights on the other side of the world.
European countries ruthlessly exploited all the riches from eastern countries through brute force, leaving entire nations in famine and misery.
Contrarily, all vassal statse under Ottoman rule had their own rulers selected among their own people, had their own economies, and they owned the empire equally.
Most of the administrator class of the Ottomans were chosen among the children of christians, who happily gave their children, knowing that they would become the most elite military officers, governers, and pashas. Even the grand viser (deputy emperor) were usually chosen among them. Contrary to popular belief, Cristian children were not chosen only as soldiers, and the ones to become soldiers were not expandable forces, but they were the elite guard of the emperor. This was not based on cruelty, but on a tradition of Turkish Sultans before the Ottoman Empire. The soldiers of Turkish origin were ruthless nomads, and they sometimes switched sides during power strugles between Turkish rulers. So the emperor required loyal outsiders that had nothing to do with the politics.
Until the nationalist provocation of the European powers in 18th-19th centuries, most of these states never rebelled against the empire. There was a common saying by the Hungarians: "We prefer the caliphate rather than the Catholic rule!". Becouse Cristians and jews reallu florished through free trade and craftsmenship throughout the empire.
This actually become the major downfall of the empire, since most of the rich people were christians and jews during the final rebellions. And the neglected muslim & Turkish citizens were mostly poor farmers and peasants that couldn't sustain the state. Still, these poor people established Turkey out of nothing, after defeating the ivader imperial forces including British Empire and its decoy, the Greece ruler, with the motive of defending their homeland.
Regarding the only so-called atrocity of the Ottoman Empire, the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Armanians, which was indeed a very sad event, I need to remind you that equal number of innocent people were slaughtered by Armanian gangs in civil war. Russia was continuously provoking these gangs, giving them guns and ammunation. And the government had to banish all Armenians to south in order to secure control in the region as a preparation for Russian attacts during World War I. However the county were poor and there was an ongoing fight with the British Empire at 3 different continents. As a result of the the limited resources and weak chain of command, the situation got out of control, and these Armenians died mostly because of thirst and hunger during their long march to the southern lands. Unfortunately Armenians usually likes to tell only one side of their story, never mentioning the countless innocents suffered by Armanian gangs.
Please read Ottoman history from objective resources before having ideas based on pure hatred.

Not sure if it was a great caliphate. It's not like anyone takes the Ottoman Caliphs seriously these days when it comes to religious matters. Great state? Sure, for much of its existence. It was pretty tolerant and tried to incorporate its various people, but like Austria Hungary that made it a ticking time bomb once nationalism came into play.
In its last few decades though, it was horrible. It deserved to be destroyed.

In 1402, Ottomans lost the war and Tamerlane took the padishah as prisoner. After that , his 5 sons fight for the throne and in 1411, Çelebi Mehmed captured the throne and ended the war. Historians doesn't consider these events as a civil var. Also, in east, they didn't fight with Persians. Safavids were Turks also. Shah Ismail(founder of Safavid Dynasty and Empire) was a Turk. The country is using Turkish in daily life. Shah Ismail even wrote poem in Turkish:)

Its funny how so many empires started from the area of Greece (no fellow Turks I am not saying FROM Greeks, chill :d).
What I am saying is that by watching these kind of videos I see what a key role the area of Greece had in many empires due to her position and the benefits she offered, even though the mainland is mostly rocky and mountainous.
Germany, France and Britain even though they managed to form empires of their own, they collapsed much faster due to their positions making it very hard to sustain such empires.
Another example is Italy. Both the Roman Empire and the Byzantines later were the strongest when both Italy and Greece was under their control.

Remember that Hungary went alone against the Ottomans and was fairly successful initially. When European powers started doing something about Ottoman incursions in Europe, the empire started to degrade and western powers feasted on its remains.
