      @@rouge939 Hah! I see what you mean, but I meant it more as a contrast to - how should I say it? - reading by happenstance/reflex or reading because "you have to." As a child, reading was two things: something you have to do for school and something you have to do to participate in society (menus, labels, signs, etc.)
      Pikmin 2 was one of the first games where I wasn't just reading to get info for a tutorial or getting character dialogue fed to me by text. Pikmin 2 was one of the first games where I went out of my way to read things that were unnecessary to gameplay just because it was fun!
      School sucked a lot of the fun out of reading and writing, but I found myself doing both a ton now, for fun, because other activities made it fun to read and write as a hobby instead of just something one has to do for other reasons. A lot of games with journals don't necessarily have anything of value to add to the game in the text. You just mash a button to get through them to get the quest marker or upgrade.
      But the Piklopedia was different. Added nothing necessary but it enhanced the game so much just by being fun, well-written, and short. Little optional snippets that get right into some interesting world building about how these tiny aliens see our world.

    I get the feeling that the developers wanted to put more emphasis on exploration than time management. They could have definitely applied more pressure on the player, but every game design choice points to encouraging the player to take their time and take in the atmosphere

    • @lasercraft32
      @lasercraft32 Год назад +44

      Yeah and even some of the dialogue too. The ship tells you to take your time, and Olimar also has dialogue talking about how he just wants to slow down and take a moment to relax.
      And with the caves the gameplay seems more focused on _resource management_ instead of time management... since you can't replenish your Pikmin and have a limited amount of them to get through everything.

    • @atlas1924
      @atlas1924 11 месяцев назад +9

    • @jdudbdjxb7687
      @jdudbdjxb7687 10 месяцев назад +1

      @atlas1924 except that time limit is useless when you get unlimited days, and the only time you really care about what day it is, is when you're trying to do it in a specific number of days, which is intrinsically motivated and not done by the game itself which would actually force players to plan out. The game never tells you to speed up other than the emails and resources are very much unlimited given the unlimited days feature.
      I think you're speaking more about how you play the game rather than what the game is actually promoting the player to do, as the ship tells you to take your time and the emails don't do much to motivate either

    • @atlas1924
      @atlas1924 10 месяцев назад +7

      @@jdudbdjxb7687 you do realize you don't need a time limit to be an rts right?
      Pikmin 2 has a different kind of limiting factor that isn't time, it's the amount of troops you get.
      It poses a new dynamic threat that you need to plan around your day.
      Also unlimited days doesn't really mean much since 30 days is usually way to many in the first place. I can usually have it beat in 14 days and most people can once they get a hold of the game
      Unlimited days doesn't change anything if you never reached the limit in the first place. Having a 30 day limit never affected gameplay for people too much.
      Plus Pikmin 3 basically has infinite amount of days in comparison too and that is his favorite one currently
      Having a set day limit never affected gameplay almost at all
      Also Pikmin 2 literally just naturally builds upon Pikmin 1s story. Most of the ship parts are basically useless like the pilots seat but olimar needs them anyway for some reason
      Pikmin 2 has you collecting Alot of worthless stuff in retrospect as well just like Pikmin 1
      Like seriously why does he need his libra or Sagittarius? Why does he need the Geiger counter for a trip home? Why does he need like half the ship parts?

      @@icantthinkstraight8853 - Oh certainly, but crushing and piercing damage affects all other Pikmin types, meaning that it’s non sensible to fight the final boss with anything other than Rock Pikmin (maybe winged to the side for when it flies occasionally). The only thing to kill the Rock Pikmin in the final battle is the elemental hazards; if Purples were an option, they would be at risk of crushing and piercing damage, as well as the elemental hazards. Given the Plasm Wraith isn’t affected by direct or stun damage (just chipping away the fallen blobs), it makes the Rocks more OP than other types, even Purples by comparison.
      Throwing Rock Pikmin at most enemies is just as powerful as the stun damage from Purples. You’re right that the Rocks don’t latch on, but they don’t need to if chucking 5-10 of them at any given enemy basically ends the fight. Perhaps this is mitigated by further difficulty settings, but on regular difficulty, the Rock Pikmin are generally more effective at combat than the intended Reds.

You're upest they remove the agency and pressure to get all the treasures in a limited number of days, which removes a form of resource management. You claim that time management is a part of RTS games, which is true for some games. But then later on in the video, you actually complain about having limited opportunities to grow pikmin in the underground sections...which would be resource management...which is also an RTS game mechanic and fundamental. Is not the part of the undergrounds difficulty recognizing the dangers to avoid total loss of pikmin in the dungeons.

I love the theme of capitalism ruining the good in the little things and the big things, such as taking Olimar’s son’s present or literally rifling through the world attempting to find anything of value. I do agree that the dungeons do get a bit same-y visually, but I enjoy analyzing a floor and seeing the best way to go about it. And you’re right, maybe on one randomized playthrough a treasure is in the water! It incentives players to be ready for any hazard at any time and not to go with just purples. I love the hazards as well, it caused many shrieks and laughs in subsequent playthroughs with friends or partners. Alright, so after finally playing Pikmin 2 and watching some follow-ups reacting to this video, I finally understand YOUR problem with 2.
    Your definition of a Pikmin game is getting a lot done in the shortest time possible, you think the core aspect of the franchise (maybe even the RTS genre in general) is time management. You completely neglect the other core aspect of an RTS: resource management. You may have infinite time in caves, but you have limited resources and can only replenish them under specific circumstances. You need to carefully plan out how many Pikmin you want to bring into a cave, and make sure your most valuable assets (Whites and Purples) aren't at risk since they're hard to get your hands on. There's still plenty of strategy present in the caves, just not the kind you prefer. An RTS doesn't need a time limit to make it an RTS, the "Real Time" aspect moreso comes from the fact that everything in the game acts in real in-game time. As you gather resources, complete tasks, and plan out your next move, the game doesn't pause. Everything around you still act the way they're programmed. The only time the game pauses is when you pause the game yourself.
    It looks like Nintendo understands what the players want too, since 4 takes most of its notes from 2:
    >No day limit
    >Infinite time in caves
    >Exploration and resource management are the most important factors.
    And it looks like the community agrees considering Pikmin 4 is becoming the best-selling Pikmin game in the franchise.
    But hey, if you don't like managing a limited amount of resources despite having plenty of time, maybe the RTS genre isn't for you?
    Addendum: Come to think of it, Pikmin is one of the few RTS games that incorporate a time limit, whereas most RTS games barely incorporate one into their core gameplay. When they do, it's usually for 1 or 2 missions in their campaign. If you believe time limits are a key feature to the RTS genre, I don't think you've played other RTS games...

    The complaints about purple spray and purple pikmin feel like a very disingenuous cope against the fact the game has such high difficulty... Both are easy-come easy-go resources with large time investments behind them. In the amount of time you spend stocking up on spray you can just clear the dungeon/encounter without bothering collecting spray at all, using just your wits and skill. It's more fun, more time-efficient, and is only really a flaw unless you're bad and need to resort to grinding. Same goes for purple pikmin. I agree that their stunlock capability is a bit overtuned against regular mook enemies, they're also slow af making them more fragile than the rest of your party. And each one lost is another large time set-back. So bringing a whole fragile squad of them into a cave is high risk-reward situation, which can backfire and leave you feeling like an idiot. The devs were smart about how much time investment vs power potential the purple spray and purple pikmin offer. They're cheesy under the most ideal situations and if you take your sweet, sweet time, but they're anything but game-breaking.

    I… I actually never knew that Pikmin 2 didn’t have a time limit. I always did everything with a sense of urgency, because I thought that was the case. I actually really like the Dungeons in Pikmin 2, not only because it’s fun to set up for them, explore, and complete them, but also because I thought it was important to go into specific dungeons at specific times, so you can properly time exiting out of said dungeons with your venturing forth on the overworld map to collect the remaining treasure in the day. Plus, with the idea that days had a time limit, I found the dungeons relaxing in a way, since they were a break from all the fast planning in the overworld. My minds been blown man…

    I’ve always thought the dungeons were really unique and interesting in my opinion. Exploring a semi-linear (mostly) underground themed areas in multiple levels leading to a boss with some nirvana floors truly made it interesting every time. I hope they return in Pikmin 4 in some capacity. Also the dungeons were also graphically impressive for 2004 just like the overworld. Half-Life 2 came out the same year and I’d argue Pikmin 2 looked just as good in some ways.

    On your comments about Pikmin 2's removal of the time limit; I get that removing the time limit takes away the sense of urgency that Pikmin 1 had, but after playing all the games for so many years, the time limit has kind of become less and less of an issue to the point where it barely ever effects the way I play the games. I usually complete Pikmin 1 in around 9-10 ingame days. Pikmin 2 usually takes 14-17 days to 100% and the same goes for Pikmin 3. To veteran players of the Pikmin series, time limits don't matter and only serve to give newer players a reason to avoid the game. By giving Pikmin 2 an infinite time limit, veterans of the series are barely effected at all and newer players are encouraged to explore and work at their own pace. This lack of time management "difficulty" is also overwhelmingly made up for by Pikmin 2 being the hardest game in the series. Ironically, you could technically say the time limit artificially inflates the difficulty of Pikmin 1 by establishing a time limit that most players never see the end of.

      Pikmin 1 made you able to lose the game and have to start all over again from day 1. Which is good for game life in theory, but ingame, it only makes not being efficient enough infuriating. Playing Pikmin 1 as a young kid, I could never manage to find all of the parts and always got the bad ending, making me not want to play the game anymore because seeing Olimar die made my small brain feel very guilty and upset, to the point where my mom just sold the game. I played Pikmin 2 the most due to the lack of a time limit, and I struggled with Pikmin 3 on the Wii U but still managed to get through it (Louie stealing the Juice was a nightmare).
      Looking back now, I think Pikmin 2 is my favourite, with Pikmin 1 being a close second and Pikmin 3 being my least favourite (That doesn't mean it's bad, it's still amazing). Can't wait to see what Pikmin 4 will do.

You dont have to engage with the enemies and none of the holes are blocked in the Subterranean Complex so you can literally skip all the floors by just zooming through with Olimar. @@BrendanJSmith The caves you presented as possible alternatives to the Subterranean Complex all have one or both of the following two problems:
      1. Some or all of the candypop buds will not spawn if you have 20 or more Purple Pikmin (counting both your current active party and in the hull of your ship). You can't farm Purple Pikmin as effectively because the amount of candypop buds you will find is less than 3, which is the amount you will find in the Subterranean Complex.
      2. The floors hosting these candypop buds are dangerous. You can't guarantee access to all of them without engaging in combat, dealing with the elemental hazards, or resetting until you get an easy layout. It's slower when you consider the fact that there is never anything of danger on the 8th floor of the Subterranean Complex.

      What significantly marred my repeat playthroughs of Pikmin 2 was that I realized so many enemies/bosses could be defeated easily, just by me either punching them out with captains or employing hit-and-run attacks with much smaller groups of Pikmin. This allowed me to kill legions of dangerous critters with almost zero injuries/casualties, and the only drawback was how much longer it took to clean out enemies that way.
      Due to this, the only reason for me not to use such tactics was if I had the pressure of a time limit, such as in Challenge Mode or the Submerged Castle (plus when I confronted the Man-at-Legs and Titan Dweevil, against which those tactics don’t work well). While the lack of a time limit understandably made the game much more fun for you, it pretty much broke the game for me, upon realizing how easily I could exploit it to “cheese” enemies/bosses without limits.

Having previously used maps remade with different content and different environment made it incredibly interesting. I hope in Pikmin 4 they re-use some of the areas from the previous games but combine them with newly-designed areas to make the maps way larger. So I'm one of the dudes who has Pikmin 2 as his favorite, so I'll go ahead and throw in my two cents.
    I'd say that most of the points you made in this video are spot on. Story is undoubtedly weaker than Pikmin 1, which has one of the strongest stories of any Nintendo game period(I *love* Olimar's journal entries and could write an entire essay on how they make Pikmin 1 as great as it is). The Piklopedia is incredible and is quite possibly the best part of the entire series, doing a lot of heavy lifting in making the world feel lived in. Ultra Bitter Spray, Doomsday Apparatus, and Purple Pikmin are all indeed complete and utter indefensible bullshit.
    The one point where our opinion really diverges is with dungeons. While I agree the level design isn't much to write home about, the *enemy* design is some of the best I've seen in any game, and the sheer variety of enemy designs and attack patterns dwarfs every other Pikmin game. Wandering enemies like the Gatling Groinks and Spotted Bulbears are utterly terrifying, especially if they manage to get the drop on you. The Armor Cannon Beetle Larvae can utterly decimate your party if you're not careful and don't maneuver well. Even mostly harmless enemies like the radio bug (forget it's name) or the mitites can distract your army, leading them into traps and potentially devastate your army. The sheer variety of methods the game manages to come up with to try and screw you over provides a very different challenge from the other two games, and helps make up for the removal of time pressure imo.
    This last bit is gonna be a bit of a hot take, but I also... kinda like the bullshit instakill traps. Ok, maybe not the rockfalls, but stuff like falling bombs or getting ambushed by hidden enemies really keep you on your toes and helps sell the environment as hostile to your presence. If the game is going to give you infinite resources and infinite time to complete it, I feel like some quantity of bullshit is justified. Sure, maybe you lose 50 Pikmin due to an explosion trap, but you still have 50 more to try to complete the dungeon with and you'll have more waiting for you when you get out. It can also create some tense moments where your army gets decimated and you're just rushing to find the next geyser so that you can escape with your treasure and not lose all the progress you've made. It's really unlike anything else in the series, and I'm kinda for it.
    Lastly, while Pikmin 3 inarguably has the strongest boss fights in the series, the Pikmin 2 bosses are a significant step up from Pikmin 1's, and has plenty of memorable boss encounters of its own. You've already discussed the Water Wraith at length, but one of my personal favorites is the Man at Legs. Not only is the sheer audacity of putting a freaking LASER SHOOTING SPIDER into the game just wonderful, but having to run to cover whenever the laser comes out to avoid getting gunned down and using the terrain to your advantage is something special.
    I guess it's not terribly surprising why we have different views on Pikmin 2. I like dungeons, dungeons are ~80% of Pikmin 2's gameplay, ergo I like Pikmin 2. You don't like dungeons, dungeons are ~80% of Pikmin 2's gameplay, ergo you like Pikmin 2 less.

    • @webbowser8834

      @@Gulliblepikmin Sure, I'll bite. As said before, Pikmin 2's bosses are a significant step up from Pikmin 1's bosses, but most of them still only have 1 or two attack patterns keeping them fairly simple, to the point where some of them feel more like normal enemies with a cool theme rather than a proper boss (Hello Burrowing Snagret number 27). Pikmin 3's bosses, while far fewer in number, show a wide variety of attacks and have proper phases, keeping the fights interesting throughout the entire encounter.

    Pikmin 2 is my favorite because it offers the most freedom. You have unlimited time to explore this planet and it's areas even after you've collected every treasure, and that's exactly what I did. I spent so much time, well over 100 in game days in this game, building up Pikmin and Sprays, encountering th Ujidani and even the Beady Long Legs in the overworld. The downside of this is at a certain point the only end-of-day message you get is your wife telling you she loves you and begging you to come home and it makes me sad and wish there was an option to just, go home and end the game for real.

  • @javierascanio4309
    @javierascanio4309 11 месяцев назад +7

    Okay so:
    -You complain about multiplier not existing with two captains when the game is designed mainly for singleplayer AND this is despite 2 captains being perfectly fine for one person
    -Sure, surviving is better than going back for MONEY, but the plot works and we get some flavor about it on the mail/100% completion. Its dark humor!!!
    -Not all collectibles are required. In fact, you could just grind enemies on the first cave in the game, but would you? No, because thats dumb!! While they may not be required, you need them for 100% and your beloved piklopedia
    -No day limit? oh god, thats so terrible, its not like nintendo made it so the overworld spawns more terrific enemies if you take too long to slightly punish being slow. Plus it allows to grind infinitely if you feel like it! In fact, pikmin 4 doesnt seem to be gonna have a day limit either.
    -The overworld requires far more multitasking than the caves to mantain bridges, plus you cannot grow pikmin in caves like normal. You get unlimited time because caves are FAR more punishing. Sure you can just reset the level, but thats NOT intended.
    -The mail makes sense in this context, this is more of a "i just dont like it" situation, irrelevant.
    -Have you considered that they travel at the speed of light? a trip back and forth can take MORE than it seems, so the changes in the areas are justified, plus they add so much stuff only very experienced players would notice!
    -Aesthetics = personal preferences, irrelevant again!
    -Its a videogame, even if time stopping for caves may be nonsense, what do you want, being kicked out of hole of heroes cause time ran out?
    -They replaced time management with pikmin management in riskier areas where you cant replenish them as easily, take it or leave it. Plus submerged castle exists.
    -grab treasure, kill enemies and move on? Thats the whole pikmin gameplay my guy. Minus time limit, its THE SAME
    -Oh wow random generated levels are so lazy. Not 100% is like that, in fact, some structures are guaranteed to appear, and im not talking about boss arenas. Gotta love how you mention that there was no human thought placed as you show a guaranteed structure that always appears on that floor (the line of pipes hiding dweevils
    -Resuming cave complaints, you're trying to compare this game's main gimmick as the normal pikmin gameplay, and its objectively bad since its not the same as pikmin 1, right? Some news for you, people love caves, they may feel samey visually most of the time, and random generation makes some (NOT ALL) treasure spots make no sense, but thats the point!! Its a dangerous environment where you must take it slow or risk your troops blowing up.
    -"hope your pikmin dont die while you're down here"... THATS THE POINT, IT WOULD BE UNBALANCED TO CREATE PIKMIN IN AN ENVIRONMENT SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO NOT DO THAT. In fact caves expect you to go in with smaller squads (take bulbmin as an example). The more pikmin you bring in, the worse it tends to be inside.
    -You still can use bomb rocks that are dormant in your favor, PLUS you KNOW those hazards exist and you can disable 99% of them by taking a quick stroll with just your captain as you scout the surroundings, you even know this, its the way the devs motivate you to scout the surroundings before actually making a move! Even the crazy stuff like bulbears. Also, WHY ARE YOU GOING WITH A FULL SQUAD?
    -Making some strong enemies recover is a fair way to increase difficulty, its not even necessary if you're efficient enough, and the way back should be clear by now anyways.
    -The bitter spray is a TOOL that you can use to deal with "unfair" enemies. Its less common than spicy spray as well. It takes LONG to make them, you're better off making sure to loot eggs and flint beetles, which are relatively rare.
    -You still cant use purples against many enemies, but i will admit purples were WAY too strong. They're still slower, thus more vulnerable to instakill hazards. In fact, you rant shortly after about the issues their slowness bring and that you still need other types, PICK A SIDE.
    -Oh, so you want purples to be MORE broken with their own onion. Its not perfect, but the lack of onion makes purples a glass canon, so, uhh, DONT?
    -Grinding purples is EASY. A bit slow? maybe, but you can just ignore everything since you're not looking for treasure anymore :). Also, endgame content is allowed to be tedious, as you're not forced to do it.

    I definitely agree with most of your grievances, so I'll just gush about the Piklopedia. As someone who loves collecting and completing things in games, I love the Piklopedia entries, including the sales pitches, but Louie's Notes are definitely the best parts, and probably my favorite part of the whole game. Reading them always makes me hungry and get in the mood to cook or grill something. and anything that makes me want to eat food that doesn't exist is always a winner in my book.
    I think my favorite entries are the ones that are inedible, such as the Caustic Dweevil ("Effects of consumption include uncontrollable arm flailing and enthusiastic dishwashing") or the Glowstems ("Known effects include uncontrollable episodes of impromptu break dancing"). Just the thought of Louie trying to eat a fucking LED light is hilarious.

      For me personally, having to manage limited time is as vital to a Pikmin game’s difficulty as having to manage limited resources is to a Survival Horror game’s difficulty. If the first Resident Evil game made it easy to just chip away at enemies' health with the knife, while easily avoiding damage, plus there was a way to farm more ammo whenever I wanted, then it would remove so much of the legitimate challenge for me.
      In turn, I would be encouraged to play the game, in a way that makes it feel like more of a slow and dull slog. Pikmin 2 making it more cost-effective to just take out enemies with my captains' punches or a tinier fragment of my Pikmin squad, while also removing the urgency to get things done quickly, had a similar effect for me.

    I still really love Pikmin 2, but I'll agreed that it is the most flawed entry. The removal of urgency and the unfairness/dullness of the majority of the caves really causes the game to drag a bit. It does have a lot of things that you didn't mention that I think it excells at. The bosses in Pikmin 2 are my favorite in the series, even though many are trivialized by the addition of the purples. The designes, the attack patterns, and the fact that many are more intense versions of regular enemies always stood out to me, and made getting to the end of a new cave more enjoyable, not knowing what the boss would be like. Repeat playthroughs are hurt by the knowledges and lack of uncertainty though. Another thing that Pikmin 2 did that I love is the expansion of the music system. I love Pikmin's adaptive soundtrack, and Pikmin 2 took what Pikmin 1 did with it, and ran with it. The different variations for combat, being near an enemy, working, carrying treasure, and being near a spiderwort, on top of sunset versions of each, ON TOP of different time signatures for Olimar and Louie, make the music for this game absolutly stellar. I fully agree that it's the weakest one in the series, I just wanted to point out some things you didn't mention that I personally love about 2.

    Yeah, the valid criticisms of the game. I used to always be scared of the Water Wraith in Pikmin 2 because of how powerful it was but when I 100% the game, he wasn't as deadly as I thought. The submerged castle's horror vibe could work as a whole area in Pikmin. Maybe a night time mode in Pikmin 4 that plays into the fears from the submerged castle could be cool. Hope you do a video on Pikmin 3 soon.

  • @1pikman

    I guess a big thing it comes down to is: Do you like a time limit, or not?
    Personally? Not really. Which is why I'm glad it was removed after 1 (Let's be honest: If the player's halfway competent, 3 essentially doesn't have a time limit either), and hope it stays that way with 4. I agree as a consequence it makes the day/night cycle basically pointless, but I guess they still wanted to give the player some sense of time passing on this alien world expedition as opposed to just wrapping it up in a few in-universe days.
    Second, the treasures are just so much more interesting as collectibles to me compared with 1's ship parts and *especially* the fruit from 3 for the most part. The ship parts are alright and pretty unique, but the fruit in 3 gets boring after a while since they start to repeat the same handful of fruit alot as the game goes on. Meanwhile the treasures overall are so distinct and different from eachother, with such a wide variety, that it's always a joy finding a new one and seeing what it is. I desperately, *desperately* hope they make a return in 4.
    Finally, my most superficial critique: I kinda just think 1 looks like shit. I think it absolutely NAILS the atmosphere and feeling of an alien world the best out of the 3, but it just looks so drab and monotone compared to 2 (And of course 3), which are much more colorful, vibrant and detailed.
    To clarify, I love all of these games, but my personal order is 2, 3, 1. There are totally legit criticisms in this video tho like cheap death traps and the randomly-generated dungeons. I can see why someone who's more of a fan of 1 specifically would like 2 less, and like 3 more since it was kind of a return to 1 a little bit.
