For everyone who is new to this trilogy: 2046 is the third part! Therefore I recommend watching Days of being wild and In the mood for love first. All the characters reappear and their story continues. Its probably the best trilogy ever made.
I’ve owned these on DVD for going on 15 years... never got round to watching them and so many others during my Shaw Bros./Hong Kong cinema DVD buying frenzy, guess a pandemic’s a better time than any to start lol.
Are you sure it's a trilogy? I didn't think Days of being wild could be seen as part of the others. Anyway ITMFL/2046 may be THE masterpiece of the XXIe century so far (clearly better than Mulholland drive imo)
@@welekid 100% sure. Same characters, same names. For example Maggie Cheungs character Su Li-zhen appears in all three movies with the same name. They are not as tightly connected as a matrix or lord of the rings trilogy. Still it follows the same character arcs. And in 2046 we see memories embedded that are from the Dobw era.
This cast is incredible but I wish Leslie cheung scene made it in the movie. His scene appear to be unfinished and Wong cut it out and refused to release it. He film a part in this 13 days prior to his dead and it was incompleted in the end and there wasn’t enough footage to fit in here. Could have been a better movie tho
I saw this when it came out at 15 y.o., didn't understand anything of it and haven't watched his other works before, but the general mood and visuals stuck with me for a long time. Since the years have gone by, I've seen this again and other WKW's works more than once. The aesthetics and cinematography is just beyond. You never forget your first WKW.
This is exactly how i feel about it. I remember turning on the TV in the middle of the night around that time and this film was on. Years later i wasn't even sure if it was real or if i dreamt it but i had distinct memories of it. Then i found it again
This is very true, Chunking Express was my first WKW film, I can still remember the night I first watched it close to 30 years ago. He's an arteur on a level rarely seen in any art form, to the degree I sometimes think all of cinema exists just to bring us to the point of WKW making his films.
@@RarebitFiendsindeed, many others like me can relate; saw Chungking Express when I was like 12 and fell in love with its aesthetics and theme, but being a child I forgot about it quickly... 15 years down the road I saw it again and oh boy, the feelings, the memories, it's so sweet to watch it again (along other works of WKW too)
I was here coz.........takuya kimura, found Zhang ziyi. Thought I was in a dream then came Chang Chen and I lost it. Such an amazing cast, I will be watching this movie.
It helps a LOT to watch the trilogy of "Days of Being Wild", "In the Mood for Love" and "2046" in order, and the duology of "Chungking Express" and "Fallen Angels" in order. They don't follow exactly the same chronology (it's more that they have different versions of the same characters than exactly the same characters), but they reference the previous ones in ways that would be nonsense to someone who hasn't seen the previous ones. Also, it helps to get what some of the conversations are about if one is able to tell whether someone is speaking Cantonese, Standard Chinese or Japanese, even if one needs the subtitles to know what they're saying in them, though that requires more than just watching the films in specific orders.
Welp. I already preordered. Am i going to have to buy this again when it comes out on actual 4K Blu-ray? Also, any chance this might come with Spanish subtitles?
The only of the WKW 4K restorations with any UHD-BD release announced so far is "In the Mood for Love", and then only with either German or French subtitles. So "2046" on UHD-BD with English or Spanish subtitles seems unlikely for now. For watching the restorations with Spanish subtitles, it appears (from checking JustWatch) that they're currently exclusive to Filmin in Spain and MUBI in Spanish-speaking America, with no disc releases so far.

No... You didn't lol. I don't think there's a small single way you could spoil a movie like this through a trailer. I had to watch it twice just to get some of the plot lines. Having watched Happy Together and ITMFL so far, 2046 was the most confusing of the bunch. Plus half the appeal of Wong Kar Wai movies is the atmospheres he builds.
I don't like this trailer, I think it gives you the wrong ideea about how the movie actually is. The movie, the trilogy, is yeah, possibly the greatest trilogy ever made. But if I had seen this trailer, I would have never watched the movie.
Sony has the US rights instead of Janus Films (Criterion’s theatrical division), and Sony probably has the Philippines rights too. They didn’t show this film as part of the World of Wong Kar Wai theatrical showings in America or the Philippines probably because of Sony. Maybe Fox Searchlight Pictures has the Philippines rights because they had it in Taiwan and South Korea. But it’s not on Disney+ yet Fallen Angels is there (the only WKW film on Disney+ Philippines BTW alongside The Grandmaster).

Faye Wong is so cool in this. Great character & hair

2046 is Wai's masterpiece.
If you meant to use his surname, it's Wong, if you meant to use his first name, its Kar-Wai. Fans also frequently just shorten his name to WKW.
Fallen Angels is more so imo. Itmfl is also better I think.
