  • Triumph has updated its 1200 Scrambler for 2024, thoroughly revising the range and creating more distance between the two versions, now called X and XE. But are the changes good ones, and which of the two 1200 Scramblers is the best one to buy? To find out, we traveled to the Triumph Adventure Experience in southern Spain to powerslide our way around some trails while also clocking a load of miles on the road. Here's what we discovered.

Loved that owning a 1200 xe that I’m absolutely in love with I think the x model was a excellent move by triumph to make the scrambler 1200 more accessible I’m also glad to see the dam keyless key for a bike that’s not keyless has finally gone 😎🤘🤪☝️

The 1200x released in the US this year as well. It's the perfect in-between from the Scrambler 900 and the 1200XC.
I can pick up a leftover model Scrambler 900 for around $9,000, but the 1200X releases at almost $15,000.
$15,000 is a bit of a chunk of change for a naked bike...whew.

If I want to definitely do some off road riding I wouldn’t be getting such a heavy machine as one of these. They look very decent.

I have yet to find a review that mentioned how the new suspensions on the XE feel compared to previous years. I had one of the early 2019 XE's and I'm curious to know if it's better, mine was insanely uncomfortable on anything but perfect roads and it's the only reason I sold the bike (I still think the early production model I had was not like the following ones, it was just so bad even after a respring and revalve it was just ok), but I'd still like to hear about how the changes of suspension changed the bike if at all.

One of the qualities that motivates buyers of particular a bike is that it is 'aspirational,' as in "I may never even ride on the track, let alone come close to being contender for the MotoGP, or Dakar, but I'd like to dream about the possibility." We've seen this with sport bikes, adventure bikes, and even cruisers ('I may not ever even ride with the Hell's Angels, but I like to pretend that I might.") The downgrade from the XE to the XC reduces this aspirational characteristic. I'm guess that the XE sold all that it could, and appealing to riders with less money to spend was strategic marketing.

XE for people that aspire to ride off road tracks they will never ride.
XC for people that aspire to ride off road a bit and will do it.
X for people that aspire to look like they might go off road.
Aspirations are nice and all, but buy the bike that performs for you, and not the fairy tale in your head

What I was trying to say is that many (most?) of us buy bikes that we can't take full advantage of (think of all those GSXR riders who can't put a knee down), but still take pleasure in having the possibility there.@@bobjohnson1633

Or for tall riders who want the 1200 Bonneville engine but can only fit on the XE model with it's higher seat.

The X is a new model not an updated model, replacing the now deprecated XC.

The X is to the XC what the XC is to the XE. It's third tier for people that definitely aren't going off road.

These bikes are great! However, I have a slightly different question. What are these boots and the jacket? Looks like an excellent fit for the bike's aesthetics.

I sold my 1200XC and kept my 900… they fixed on the X everything which was wrong with the XC, however not having cruise control is a shame… I am not a fan of the XE… would opt for another bike if I’d look for ADV touring and for something else for an Enduro… other than that good job

What were your main complaints with the XC? I'm actually thinking of the three- I would get one of the older XCs.

@@AlchemistsTable I actually didn’t have any big complaints… the difference between the XE and the XC are not that big and I got an XE now… couldn’t decide what I wanted after the BMW GS … anyway the difference between the XC and the XE didn’t make much sense… I like the suspension for both… lets face it: if you like the bike you don’t take it to some crazy major off road trip, there are better bikes for that and when you crash them you wont cry… the Scramblers are pretty and they are more show than being an Enduro, Motocross, or ADV bike… the difference between the X and the XE makes sense now… now the XC was a 2019 and the XE is a 2022 and the relocation of the cat made sense but you still get some heat… the missing cruise control on the X is a problem, while the XE and XC have it… a step back in my opinion… the cheaper suspension on the X is also not a problem as it more road bias anyway…again I love the Scramblers for their looks but they are not the ultimate tool… you wanna do Enduro or ADV riding look somewhere else… maybe I will find something else in a year or two and trade the 1200 but the 900 I will keep… it is pretty utilitarian and easy to ride…

No what they've tried to do is increase the profitability, which is fair enough but by cheapening?

    • @bobjohnson1633

They made it superior for most riders. If you want the XC over the X, you would just get the XE instead..The XC is the Goldilocks bike.

Too big for my liking. I wouldn’t go passed the 900 which is more than enough bike for me.

I'm only 6 foot, but the 900 was just too small. I lift weights and weigh 215#, so it just feels dainty.

@@bobjohnson1633 Good point. I once owned a BMW R100GS. Far too big and heavy off road in muddy conditions compared to my R80GS,which I should have kept. Being a 5’8” leprechaun ☘️, size and weight with bikes is more important than power.

@@bobjohnson1633 I'm 6'3", around 235lbs and absolutely love my SS, not cramped, easy to ride and nimble BUT my ideal bike would be a 1200 version. The new XC looks about as close to that as you can get. None of these are pukka off road bikes IMO. I have a 570 enduro bike, around half the weight at 115kg and it can still be a handful, plus when you come off you're not trying to lift 220+kg.
