- Beat 'em ups or Brawlers go back to the early 80s and peaked in the 90s. I've made a list of beat 'em ups that pioneered certain features that became common place in the ones that followed. Enjoy!

Definitely can do a part 2 for this. Including special meter, tag team attacks, desperation attacks, desperation attacks that doesn't use life energy (SoR3), first to implement dash, and even RPG elements
The structure of the videos and the quality of the topics is really good, keep it up!
Wouldn't River City Ransom be the first open world beat-'em-up? After all, the player was free to visit just about any location in the game at their leisure. (though of course one would have to meet certain objectives in order to advance the story)
It was also the first beat-'em-up to truly incorporate RPG elements, even if the NES port of Double Dragon flirted with the idea by incorporating an experience system for unlocking Billy's moveset.
Damn beaten by 5 hours, love RCR, expected it to be here for either of those
Thank you! I reallly like your videos, keep it up!
Always thought Sega's Ninja Princess was the first one to feature a female main character. New to the channel but liking your format so far, really well done! 👌
Thanks for coming at us with these beat 'em up firsts: putting us in the picture with your solo polo vision.
Beat ‘em ups are my favorite genre
I personally enjoy third person 3d
Thank you for this content. It gives me ideas for my next retro game for my channel. Games ive actually forgotten. Thanks for the Nostalgia. Keep up the good work🎉🎉🎉
Great work man 👍
I like the look of that Splatterhoose man.
Battle Toads & Double Dragon was the First Crossover Beat'em Up if I'm not mistaken.
Great intro music, the music inside super dd is baller!
Great video man, really enjoying all the videos on your channel. Keep them coming, you definitely deserve more subs! One complaint though, Konami's Crime Fighters was the first 4 player beat 'em up, it came out a few months before TMNT.
Do anime/manga tie ins count?
Hokuto No Ken/Fist of the North Star was released on the Sega Mark III/ Master System in 1986, and was a side scrolling beat em up. It was released in the U.S. as Black Belt as the IP license did not extend to this region.
Also notable, it had parallax scrolling in the main playable levels.
a couple of these as "beat'em ups" is a stretch
Tekken force in Tekken count don't it?
How is Renegade a belt scroller? Am I missing something?
It's not a beat 'em up if it doesn't have a Z axis.
