The brachistochrone curve in RCT2

- The brachistochrone curve is the fastest way a ball can roll from point A to point B. How closely can we replicate that in the limited workspace that is RollerCoaster Tycoon 2?

"RCTsauce" lol, legend !
"And as always, thanks for watching."
A perfect chameleon.
I'm surprised how good the physics is in what is now a 20 year old game.
Chris Sawyer is an absolute programming legend!
It helps that the physics is like 300+ years old
wonder what was it like before they invented gravity, did ppl just fly everywhere or what
Teaching physics by crashing roller coasters in Roller Coaster Tycoon... I approve!
❤
Art of Engineering I loved your Tower of Terror Video!

Wow you are here?
I saw your thomas trickshot vide lol
I was already wondering why this video was in my recommendations. But I watched your video yesterday and as you commented on here youtube probably recommended it to me.
5MadMovieMakers soooo true i would build these siiick coasters as an 8 year old and then no one would ride it!
I'm pretty sure the only reason people play this is to build death parks.
1:49 "Let's put these rides in test mode and see which one crashes first and thus wins." RCT logic...

Nice. Vsauce just returned, so this is extremely fitting.
And Mind Field is free now, too!
I actually started writing this video a day or so before he returned, so it was entirely a coincidence!
Yooo i didnt know that yet, thank you!!

You mean, we could only dream of
Congrats to 25K! Very well deserved, you've been putting out videos a lot and always high quality :D
Keep it going ;D
Me, has physics homework in regards of the brachistochrone curve
*Watches this video*
Me in class the same week *explains why the light blue rollercoaster that i drew on the board is faster than the red and black coaster.
The most interesting thing is actually that stuff like this might fix errors in the game like those with the steep pieces generating too much speed.
Where has this been all my life. I still remember when my brother built a custom bobsled coaster for the first time and the train flew off the track when it hit the first incline after the drop. It was at this point that we never messed with bobsled coasters ever again and we started actually testing roller coasters before opening them. My greatest moment in RCT2 was when I discovered how to build custom racing coasters; my brothers were so jealous :)
You are so awesome man! Seriously, IMHO you're the best kind of nerd, and amazingly kind to go to all the trouble to share all of your findings with us, in such an understandable way, even with some humor put in.
But wait, what happened to "I'll see you in the next video"??
Everybody’s talking about the intro, so is no one gonna talk about the outro? Lol
Dude Lmao yes, you are
"And I'll see you ................................................................................. in the next video"
What's with the outro? It sounds like his usual.
@@tonispiip8054 "...and as always, thanks for watching" is how Vsauce videos end 👍
Hey, Vsauce! Did you know that the amount of people who watch a RUclips video to the end, is affected by Zipf's Law?
for some reason, using roller coasters actually makes it easier to understand (for me)
LOVE the sound of multiple coasters travelling together :)
My head has just exploded, because i watched that brachistochrone curve video literally yesterday after years. And now you upload something about it in rct2? Amazing!! What are the odds xD
I wonder how this would go in a more precise game like planet coaster.
Yeah, I would love to see someone make a video doing these same tests with the same style of coaster car in PlanCo.
Would like to see it too but according to my gameplay experience, the physics in PlanCo feel like it changes for every coaster/track ride. One of my pet peeve example is the log flume with slight downward angle looks like it's moving along a flat track. That's just my observation though :P
Or ideally, NoLimits.
I love the nod to Vsauce with the outro! I don’t see another comment mentioning it.
Exceptional quality. Good description without going into the weeds. Fascinating concept. Keep up the good work!
"hey Vsauce, Micheal here. where is the rest of the track?"
bruh you are so fucking creative I cannot believe someone has been consistently making interesting content JUST AROUND RCT for as long as you have. Kudos man.
4:18 the top of the drop point has to be identical, the vertical drop starts alot slower because of the bigger curve, than the steep slope. Thus essentially make the vertical part of the drop quite a bit shorter than the steep drop. I do believe it would get to 125 mp/h or more if it started steep right away like the yellow coaster, then into vertical sooner.
It's well known that the steep slope is faster than vertical.
The automated subtitles thought you were actually speaking Dutch this time.
Definitely sounds like he is.

This sounds like a PhD dissertation.
Lol
This is best crossover I've ever seen :D
Congrats on the 25k man, certainly deserve it! Absolutely love watching your videos and it's gotten me back into playing RCT2, which I haven't done since I was about 5
I just wanna say thank you for inspiring me to pick up this awesome game again
I am now wanting to play with steep drop/shallow rise track with that knowledge that steep pieces are "OP" hahaha. Wow.
Glad to see people still playing this game
Congratulations on the 25.000 subscribers, Marcel. Keep up the great work and the next 25.000 are already on the way!

HEY RCTSAUCE MARCEL HERE
RUclips, what is this recommendation? It's fascinating but damn you. And damn you Marcel Vos. Now I have to start playing RCT again.
Clever idea for an experiment! As a math guy who likes roller coasters, I was doubly intrigued!!
This is the best video you've ever made.
No clue what amsterdam time is but i can remember early mornings waking up to play this terrific game and the facet you are still on here producing content is proof of concept.
Nice
I love the sheer range of stuff you experiment with in this game :)
No way, I just watched the brachistochrone video today! What are the odds.
The RUclips suggestion algorithm says the odds are pretty high
On guessing the black track would be the fastest:
"No fair! You changed the outcome by measuring it!"
So glad he left in the crash animations.
So satisfying.
At first, I almost thought you were Finnish because I watch a another Finnish RUclipsr that has a similar accent lol
Interesting PoV and explanation of things!
25k subscriber, and you've tripled that a year later. Bravo!!!
When Steep Tracks are somehow better than 90° tracks that dont involve parasitic friction and uses the full gravity itself.
Steep tracks are really interesting in sense you both gain speed and lose speed unusually faster
MESSAGE TO ALL SUBSCRIBERS: Let's all 25k tune in tomorrow and take down Ninja for the #1 streamer spot.
Yeah!!
why did RUclips recommend me this is beyond me, but then I kept watching till the end
I like watching your videos and i don't even play this game. I just really enjoy how well you explain things in detail.
:)
This is why using this curve in coasters results in the best excitement rating when going off a big drop, at least according to planet coaster's logic of excitement being proportional to speed
Pleased I guessed light blue. That vert against steep has the dysfunction of having to convert it's momentum to a different direction and likely is losing much more to friction.
I always had a feeling that the vertical drop was slower than it should be.
RCT2 was my childhood. Love this game and interesting video. :)
“And as always, thanks for watching”. Nice sign off shoutout to VSauce there
I fucking love you new favourite youtuber hands down
I love these videos, great job.
Turned on subtitles
became fluent in Dutch.
Thanks Marcel!
We need more of such things. What a great idea
Chris did all of this by himself, no? He killed it!
He sounds like a Mathematics Professor/lecturer trying to CYA himself playing Rollercoaster tycoon in his university office.
It's amazing how Marcel Vos, aka Kees van der Spek, is playing so much RCT, next to his show undercover in the outside country and puts all this videos online. Tenk joe ferrie muts Kees!
You can't be anything else but Dutch, the accent gives it away perfectly
Congrats on the 25k subs! And 12 hour livestream on my birthday? Great present from you to me Marcel! (jk I'll be celebrating by sitting in a cirle and eating pieces of cheese with little flags on top of them)
Do I play this game?
No.
Am I fascinated by these videos.
HELL YEAH!
You can apply snell's law to find the ideal curve with the limited track pieces you have.
The Bachistichrone curve is simply snell's law applied infinitely many times
The bachistichrone durbe dipping below the end elevation is only necessary if you wanted to do the variation where a ball dropped from any height will oscillate with the same period no matter the starting point
I love this video. Because it has the most explotions. Therefore, it is the best video on the internet.
"Hey RCT soure" that made me subscribe to your channel. I discovered your videos and then reinstalled RCT2 after years
Alternate video title: "Killing dozens of park goers to make the ride as fast as possible"
Sounds like you're average observation tower ride with powered launch.
Youre the best, Marcel! Great stuff as always :)
Never seen such commitment and abuse to a video game before. Well done
This reminded me so much of Rudi Carrell. The sound of childhood German TV shows.
Wasn't expecting that intro, but great video on this topic.
my worlds are colliding HAHA i just watched the vsauce video yesterday. this is amazing
If Marcel remaid this video now, all those trains would be full of people.
Weird, I just rewatched Vsauce's video on that like two days ago. Nice timing.
This video is really good value
...
I want to go home
3:50 expanding why the curve accelerates: inside the curve, the object would always want to go straight, but the forces applied from the surface (called Normal) and Friction is keeping him glued towards its trajectory. Neuton 2nd Law says the Force applied on an object within its movement direction equals to the mass times acceleration. F=m*a. By that we can understand that some amout of the forces (normal and friction) are applied towards the path, increasing the acceleration (since mass is constant). If you would like to be more accurate, in circual trajectory the Forces towards the center of the spin equals the mass times radial acceleration. Fr=m*ar
If there was no friction any steepness slope reach the same top speed since all the potential energy would be converted to kinetic energy. It's not so much that the steeper slope gets the coaster reaching a higher top speed (though this is true with friction), it's that it gets closer to it's top speed earlier and thus has a higher average speed.
This guy is the legend we all waited for!
YOU MONSTER YOU KILLED THEM ALL!
ROTFLOL!
good intro
Putting science back into RCT2
You should totally try this in planet coaster, it allows for very fluid coaster design
the perfect way to learn something about the laws of physics: inculde a rollercoaster and an explosion!
Am a fan of both Vsauce and this lovely game, so I clicked on the video asap. Great video❣
very cool

Cool video, great Idea, thank you!
im very suprised that theres still a cult following for this game. i wish they could make a new one thats good.

- What's yours RUclips taste?
- It's complicated
6 Months ago he was celebrating 25k subs... Here we go at 50k.
The in-game acceleration and deceleration is also calculated at intervals, which may bug up results and grant unrealistic behaviour (even relative to the code, ignoring this aforementioned fact).
(In other words, it's not a "smooth" ride, and slope changes can be just before or just after a new speed is "updated", and the larger actual interval (don't know the value) the larger margin of error, times the amount of times a slope change is done, or more precisely times a slope change is done between two speed updates.
I love roller-coaster tycoon but damn you must have alot free time to figure that out
