- Today, I add an oil cooler in the engine bay of my 4Runner. It was originally made for the 2nd gen Tacoma, but will work in a 4Runner and FJ Cruiser. Nuff said.

I see people commenting that this is an "oil heater" and not a cooler, which doesn't seem to make sense considering you've just linked the COOLING SYSTEM to it. Once you're driving, and especially if you're towing something, this seems like it would surely keep a more consistent temperature and help ensure a longer life of your motor. My 4runner is at 273k miles and I'm considering this installation as I'm shopping for cargo trailers. Already installed the trans cooler after watching that vid. Thanks for all the info!!
Hello again, I just ordered my kit. Customer service over there is top notch. I wanted to leave you another comment after re-watching this and hearing you state that your 4runner cannot tow. Your 4runner absolutely can, and should have all the mounting points for the Toyota towing hitches already in your frame. I just installed the Class IV weight distributing towing package from a V8 4runner onto my V6 4runner as they are literally the same trucks aside from engine and some bits. The original tow hitch that I just took off mine just bolts to the rear frame cross-member using six bolts. It's good for towing 5,000lbs and 500lb tongue weight. Wiring for trailer lights should also be in your harness and just bundled somewhere. Cheers Brian, and thanks for the direct and clear instructions!
Glad this video helped!
As for me not being able to tow, right now I can't. I would have to get the tow mount and add it to the rear, which isn't much of a priority for me (at least not right now). I've got other stuff currently in the works.
Just ordered the same kit for my Tacoma (no tow package). Thanks for the video
Back in the 80s and 90s we called these oil heaters. It's basically doing the same thing as the factory tranny cooler in the radiator (remember, you went external on that too). IME, especially if you're running synthetic oils, your oil temperature will be 10 degrees cooler without a water/oil cooler than with it.
If you're concerned with oil temps, it'd be better to run a sandwich plate adapter that will intercept the oil flow and send it to an external oil cooler.
Dig it... might do it on my FJ
That will only work on 2007-2009 FJ. 2010+ totally different oil filter cartridge type set up
I swapped a 4runner engine for a customer and the used engine I got had the oil cooler. I went ahead and "upgraded" his and installed the oil cooler setup on it.
You moved your oil catch can I think
The v6 tacoma 2wd prerunner came with that and that not really an oil cooler it's more of an oil heater
3+ years later… Any noteworthy points? Considering doing this as well
Helps keep your engine cool, good for towing or performance related things. Even though the transmission is the primary focus for towing (towing package comes with a transmission cooler), it wouldn’t hurt to add an engine oil cooler as well.
To this day I haven’t experienced any oil leaks or coolant leaks coming from the cooler. Even though I don’t tow, it gives me reassurance that my engine will last longer, and won’t burn up since I live in a very hot and humid area
Do you have another link for the kit, Looks like they no longer sell it!
Can u tell me the part number to the fitting in 10:17? I have a 2012 TRD sport and I'm getting a leak in that area, was wanting to maybe replace that part instead of the whole housing
If I'm looking at the right one, the part number is 90404-19013
@@airsoftmechanic thank you brother, one more question, my 2012 looks like it comes with that assembly that U added on yours (looks like your oil cooler) must come standard on 2nd Gen Tacomas? I'm trying to avoid goin to the stealership for this replacement.
Alguien sabe para que sirve esto???
why did you remove the throttle body spacer? sorry if I missed an explanation in the video
Steven Olson Got bored of it, and it was stretching the rubber couplings
Do you think you’ll ever do a video of replacing your headers?
Smith Simmons Good question...
I’ll be waiting lol
@@smithsimmons7108 I never forgot about you. 3 years later, I finally got headers. Here's the video: ruclips.net/video/x45XYhb6wO0/видео.html&lc=UgyAq5s593UMqaArF2d4AaABAg
Hello. I watch a lot of your videos and i appreciate your it. I would like you to recommend me a good mechanic that specialize on 4Runner. I have a 2008 urban 4Runner and I’m having issues with my XREAS. Please help.
shonzy jay Hard to recommend a mechanic to you, considering I don’t know where your located.
I would of just delete the XREAS.
I’m located in Indiana.
What is the part number? That link that you provided no longer works.

Does your oil filter not have a lot of oil inside when you go to change it?
callofdutyguy9 The reason why there wasn’t a lot of oil was because the engine was cold. All of the oil was at the bottom of the engine
Airsoft Mechanic ok. I have a Tundra with the 4.0 and needs an engine. I’m swapping over the oil filter housing and oil cooler. I was expecting lots of oil to drip out of the filter but it looked almost dry to me. Just wondering if it’s normal
@@callofdutyguy9 If I had the engine running before making the video, then yes there would have been more oil coming out the filter. But I needed it to be cold so that the coolant wouldn't be hot and shoot out
why the cooler ?
judo4 bagels Why not the cooler?
