I didn't even know these 3.4s _had_ an oil cooler. My 96 Taco with 340k+ leaks worse than my 7.3 diesel which is saying something. Thanks for giving me something to check.
This was a perfect tutorial, thank you. Of note, the 'O' ring on my 4runner oil cooler had hardened and adhered itself to the part. It was exceptionally difficult to pick/scrape out (came out in about 100 pieces of hardened rubber). All else went smoothly, no more leak!
I ran across your videos from doing a YT search on Toyota engines. Go figure. It's nice to see more women getting into the automotive repair business. I taught general basic mechanics (car care really) for a few years and a few women really got interested back in the 1970s. All I could do was to refer them to either a trade school or community college, since none and I do mean NONE of the local dealerships were willing to take in a lady and teach them. I congratulate you on all your accomplishments. Plus your personality and enthusiasm make you the perfect roll model for women who want to wrench. Keep up the great work. You taught this old mechanic a few things too. Moe
I mainly repair German cars but doing this service on a friends 4Runner and a few other things. Cool to see Faye actually has a video up on doing the same thing to give me an idea on where it's at. Thanks Faye
So, wish I had found this video a couple years ago. My 3rd Gen has had a slow leak since I bought it 4 years ago. Found this video, checked out my cooler, and sure enough, leaking. Bought the parts and changed it out last week...not a drop of oil on the concrete since! Thanks
I am a Alaskan and payed for a 99' T4R sr5. It has been my Dream mid size SUV growing up. You have Helped me save some $ diy, as well as double check with the manual to get things checked off my list. ❤ your channel, Helping others learn & keeping T4r's running out there still. Keep up the Hard work out there.
I've got a 96 with 193,000. I've been lucky my oil cooler is not leaking yet. I've had to replace the valve cover gaskets. Thanks for your videos, you save me a lot of time.
I am glade you show how you do it and what may happen ,because you are really doing and on somthing we would be working on , not the super clean, new and spotless car show cars. And you inspire people to try it them selves.
You are one of my top favorite mechanics on you tube. Very quick to get to the point no messing around . You explain things so people like me can understand thank you. I wish i knew half of what you have forgotten lol
The sounds you make while wrenching are much more pleasant than those I make. I just did rocker cover gaskets on my 2012 Forester with the engine in. Just a little more than an inch and a half clearance to get at the bolts, clean the old RTV and get the rocker cover back on without messing up the new RTV bead. The sounds I made were much less family friendly. No giggles at all.
Just did the gasket change and I would add one thing to this great video. Wait for an oil change, yes, but also, go ahead and flush and drain your radiator. The video doesn't show removing the 2 hoses attached to the cooler. Those are radiator hoses running anti-freeze through the cooler. I wasn't expecting the face full of antifreeze I got when pulling those off and because it's a low point on the block, you lose most of your fluid, so, good time for a flush and fill of the radiator. An added note, my cooler was clogged as was the exit hose for the antifreeze. These puppies are $800 to replace. I dug out all the junk with a hanger and ran pressured water through it, it cleaned it out. Did the same with clogged hose. All good and working now. Thanks again for the informative vid.
Just a tip that can help from having the coolant drain out, especially when you may have recently done a flush and fill already. just clamp the hoses before removal. Harbor freight sells hose clamps for just that purpose, probably amazon too. Any clogging is concerning to me. I haven't done this myself yet, but given your experience I'd be inclined to completely remove the cooler myself and give it a look see. I would likely even spring for a new cooler just as a preventative measure. Sometimes going cheap can be a lot more expensive in the long run, as I've learned from the school of hard knocks many times...
Damn it, I should have seen this video before I did my oil change. Now I have to wait for 3000 miles. I love that Faye is fixing everything I need to fix on my 3rd gen 4 runner.
Just did this repair following your vid and it went great, and that leak is finally gone. I don't have a lift so I definitely suggest taking off the wheel if other people wanna make a mess in their driveway like I did. It's a tight fit, but doable! Thanks for the guide!
hello, you are great, i have two Toyota's 1990 ex cab 4x4 3.0 and 1993 Toyota 4 runner 2wd 3.0...... I just want to say that watching your video made the repair's sound fun, i do most of my Owen repair's but sometime's you need to see it from a different angel, anyway's you made my day, thank's i will be back.
Great video, Faye. I appreciate that you always specify what tools are needed and torque specs. for the job that you are doing. Keep up the great work...and the chickens video clips at the end.
ok, just did the valve covers on my 2001, super cleaned all the old oil up, drove it for about 200mi. My oil cooler looks like yours pre-surgery. I almost went for the pan gasket, but, clearly there is oil dripping from the cooler. Looks easy enough, thanks for the vid.
So did the deed this weekend. Ended up having to remove the hoses as the gasket had hardened into black concrete. Had to chip it out carefully with small flathead. My recommendation to others would be just do this at time to change oil and rad hoses and fluid flush. Kill all birds w one stone. I did also replace the smaller hose since it was out. Now engine is oil free and beautiful! THANK you again for vid! NEVER would have tackled this otherwise! ✌
Thank you for the good info. Breaker bar didn't work for me on the 24mm bolt. Had to get the oil cooler bolt out through the driver wheel well. Long extension and a wiggle extension on an impact gun. Access is right above the upper control arm. Came off first try with the impact gun.
Thanks Faye! I like in a way you explain and film repair procedure. I don't have 4Runners in my garage but it was interesting to watch. RUclips recommended your vid today after I posted so winter off road vids with 4runners) Cheers!
being a Toyota expert technician I recommended the oil pan on this same year model 4runner now I feel bad cause I should have checked the oil cooler gasket thanks for the helpful video. (applause yayy whooo) next time for sure
Just tackled the oil cooler O-ring on my Xterra, service manual called for draining all coolant but you can get away with just swinging it up still attached! Love your attitude :)
Faye gets us the camera shots that usually only the most spoiled and highly sponsored youtube video makers give us. So glad to see more videos, told you we would watch you do anything Faye 😆🤘❤
I just got everything to do an oil change and the oil pan gasket...now I'm gonna check that first. Perfect timing! Thank you! Also...love the chickens.
I'm happy to see your maintenance clips on your 4Runner, "Grim". I've got a 99 3rd. gen too. These rides are coming into 2 decades of being around! They keep running strong if maintained properly. The 3.4L motors are great! Thank you for all your efforts on your channel! Keep up the good work! 💜
It’s nice to see a mechanic laugh about working on vehicles some of them throw wrenches and always cussing about they don’t feel like working on it good video keep up the good work are😁
Good job, I too would have fixed that leak since it was in a component that could cause a pressure leak. Those engines remain remarkable almost leak free at high mileage. Most of them I work on have in excess of 150,000 miles and other than seeping around the oil pan and valve covers, they are pretty dry engines.
Great video. As always, short, sweet and right to the point. I don't know how you don't end up covered in oil while trying to video. I end up covered and I'm not even trying to film. lol Be well! Jim
Every time you do a video on grim I get mad at myself!!:) During the early 2000's I was working at a custom car shop in Ohio. I needed another car that I could drive back and forth to work. My boss offered to sell me either one of the company cars he built. A mitz 2nd gen eclipse, or a 3rd gen 4 runner. Both really decked out to promote our company. Even know it was early December, we had crazy snow, and I have already been driving the 4 runner for more than a week! I freaking bought the eclipse! It hands down was the worst vehicle I ever purchased! I really kick myself in the butt for not picking the Toyota:(
Hi Faye! Excellent video! I just bought a 95 T100- 3.4 today and it’s leaking pretty bigly from that area as well. I look forward to using your channel as a maintenance resource. I love working on my Toyotas (most of the time 😎). Peace and coconut grease! *New Subscriber*
Have to do this on my Celica, and was looking for the torque spec on the bolt! Was thinking 30-40 lbft, as its only a banjo type fitting! Thanks for the demo 👍
fixed huge couple leaks in a MB om651 engine (E-coupe). Oil filter housing and oil cooler both were pouring out. Upper oilpan also dripped. Replaced both and will never do it again. took 2 days to find and fix the problem
This was great, Faye! I didn’t know that part existed on my 99. And it most assuredly is causing much of my “messy lower engine”! I’ll be doing this repair. Your video was well executed too (even with all the giggling). 👍🏼
I Always make sure to scream out in a high pitched voice," OH GOD! there's oil EVERYWHERE!" when im changing oil at the shop lol. Love the Grimm repo name! I call my motor bike "root beer" myself :)
Look pretty easy, the hardest part will be to find or have the thing to lift the car (we call it 'plantilla' in Spain); to lift the cars... put tension here and there to fix crashes and bent parts etc, you know... .
That was a great video. So informative, and such a how to! Loved that you showed part numbers with your repair!. I was hoping I could reuse the rubber coated washer, but I see better now lol. TY!
I know it's a big bolt, but being hollow I was surprised at the 43 torque spec! Great video. I really need some of those pipe cleaner style wire brushes, but they all seem expensive.
Neat video. That Shell Rotella T-5 is great oil along with the Valvoline VR-1 full syn. you mentioned in a previous video. Glad to see you use quality engine oils. 🙌
What I like about you is that you always seem to enjoy yourself while you’re working on cars which makes your videos more fun to watch.
I am enjoying life!! Thank you!
James I don’t doubt that at all, I’ve had my fair of that myself.
Is it just me or anyone else loves it when she points to her name tag when she says her name....keep up the awesome work girl..
Like how you’re so happy. When I’m doing these repairs, I’m cursing and screaming the whole time.
Out of all Toyota engines i work on (25 years) this 5vzfe is my favorite. Still using timing belts. I love these.
You rock!
Especially showing that the gasket can be removed and replaced without taking the houses off.
Extremely helpful, thanks.
Houses=hoses
Darn spell check.
I can't help but smile when I watch your videos

Thanks to your video the seal is replaced and now everything is nice and dry. Priceless information, thank you!
So awesome!!! Thank you!
Once again, searching for a solution for something for my Tacoma, I find one of Faye's videos. Thanks so much for the help. You're awesome!
That is SO AWESOME!!! Thank you!!!
Thank you Faye! The parts listed saved me from buying internationally! 👍

I love your videos you have saved my 4runner from the junkyard over 100 times by now

Another awesome Faye! Keep up the great work! I almost died due to the adorableness at the end video!!
Thank you for making being a mechanics an honorable profession,
Excellent explaining on this repair . Awesome 4 runner , too !
you do the same thing I do after a repair . looked under the car for leaks. a good habit to get into!

I just got everything to do an oil change and the oil pan gasket...now I'm gonna check that first. Perfect timing! Thank you! Also...love the chickens.
Got 3rd gen with 307k miles on it and oil cooler started leaking. Was told it would be $900 to get a new one. Will have to try this instead. Thanks!
Love the gap before chicken vid, never sure if there will be one so aways watch all the way to end.
I love those funnels I have one for my Dodge charger
Nice and straightforward. Good work.

Only if I had known you didn't to take the coolant hoses off, also you made putting that thin on ring back on to easy👍👍👍
Always great content and editing! You’re a natural for the camera too! Cool stuff

If Mechanics were this HOT in my town I'd pay to get work done on my rig :), but for now I'll do it my self ..:) thanks for the cool vids Faye!

I have one for my Subarus.
Very convenient.

Thanks for the tips!
I will do mine tomorrow with the oil still in! You rock!
Did you get an oil bath?
Always enjoy the hack out of your videos, you make them so fun to watch. Also love when the chicken makes special guest appearances 😃🐔
I was about to drop the oil pan glad I watch this video hope it’s the fix
Nice Job, Faye. Thanks for taking the time to share it. I'm sure recording slows down the whole process. :)
I like these shorter videos. 👍👍
First time I come across this beautiful lady and I really enjoy the video... i learn something new keep up the good work ❤👍👍
Can u do a video about flushing the transmission fluid, when is it safe to do so, what fluid should be use, etc. thank you
Yes, she enjoys what she does, FAYE, AWSOME JOB
sounds like you have your worker bees working hard :D Faye cracking the whip LOL. Great video.
Thanks for sharing this video, interesting and informative. Thanks
This was great, Faye! I didn’t know that part existed on my 99. And it most assuredly is causing much of my “messy lower engine”! I’ll be doing this repair. Your video was well executed too (even with all the giggling). 👍🏼
Awesome video as always. You are always so informative which is wonderful.
Faye I love your posts. You are helpful and cheerful. Keep up the good work.
Hey Faye. Nice info. Glad you got the AGG gig. Big.$$$. you got this!! P.S. I think you Make The Show!
Thank you for the informative and entertaining video. Even after a hard day at work you lift my spirits thanks.

I would love to see a AIC valve replacement or cleaning vid on a 5VZ-FE.....I need to fix mine
Thumbs up on top down oil leak repair.
Super vid. Straight to the point!
👍 Great video and info! I miss these type of videos...
Great video. I just bought an almost identical 4 runner. Trying to track down a few leaks.
Neat video. That Shell Rotella T-5 is great oil along with the Valvoline VR-1 full syn. you mentioned in a previous video.
Glad to see you use quality engine oils. 🙌
you do a great job and you take the time to break down the process. You go girl!!!!
ENTERTAINING FAYE,,,,,,,,,, YOU SHUOLD BE BANNED FOR HAVING SO MUCH FUN...ALL THE LOVE AND THE POWER FILBZ PORT MAC😁😁😁😁
Your 4Runner is my dream 4Runner I have a 98 with 344k miles
