I know that this video is 4 years+ old, but , I enjoyed it , learned from it, and appreciate your making it !!! Just a wee bit of historical facts to toss out to you. In the early pioneer days, the skins from alligator Gars were used to cover the wooden frames of animal-drawn plows. The skin and scales were so tough that they did last quite a long time. The different tribes of Native Indians also used the skins to cover their shields and to make breastplates. The use of natural products has almost been lost due to the advancement of mass manufacturing processes and machinery. I applaud your work in educating the interested public in an old and almost forgotten art !!! Props, Son !!!

Back when I still dried snake hides I used to make Natron for salting. It's just baking soda and salt mixed in even amounts into simmering water then dried. Best of both worlds. Really pulls the moisture out and kills odor. Can also put it back into hot water and drain off to clean it for re-use.

I just luv you ! Luv to learn and you are a very good teacher.
When this mean lady had her friend shoot my Coon Cat which never did anything to her with a bee bee gun I didn't know it at first. When I found out I went to the Vet they said they couldn't do anything but kill her.
I brought her home & it really was a job to hold her down but twice a day I would slowly pour a big glass of hide. peroxide on the wound, the Vet had taken the skin off abit at the wound site & did that for 4 days.
I kept her on the bed with food & water & used a garbage bag & put alittle kitty litter on it & stayed with her & prayed big time.
Our dear Lord answered my prayers and my cat got better and lived ! Her name was Sweetsca and she would bring me live birds, I praised her but let the birds back out of the house & she learned not to do that. One one day she herded down the street a goose ! People were racking their lawns & just watched this.
I really praised her but send we have to bring it back to it's home. My cat seemed to understand & we brought it to the lake & let it go.
I told the Vet folks what I did & I just hope they used that info. But my sweet cat who had come to me as a stray lived a long happy life. Both the lady & her friend died of cancer about 6 months after they'd shot my cat. KARMA.

Down in Texas, especially around the Trinity River basing, I've seen Gar come out of that River that were bigger than a Buick! Truly prehistoric looking creatures that some how made it through extension!. I never thought about tanning Gar skin, now that I see it, I want to try it out, I make traditional self bows, and I back some of my bows with Snakeskin, mostly diamondback Rattlers, because they are more plentiful in our region, but I also have used Copperhead skins to back my bows, Copperhead backing is the most sought after, and the prettiest, but its very difficult to find a copperhead that's long enough to cover one limb of a bow. They don't get to big, and I've been known to stop traffic to rescue a nice snakeskin that was a bit slower than the 18 wheeler that took him out! I don't kill snakes to collect the skins, don't feel right about doing that, but its good to have a buddy that does the yearly Rattlesnake Round up, down in the Texas Hill country, I get some monsters from him!. Anyway something I always wanted was a Sturgeon skin to back a bow, I've seen it done and its absolutely beautiful! But we don't get to many Sturgeon down this way, unlike our northern friends, Now that I can't get a good size Gar skin, because I left the great state of Texas and moved to Savannah Ga. They don't have the monster Hat like we do back in Tx, so who wants to swap some dried Fish skins for some dried Snakeskins? I've got to try a fish skin backed bow! Does anyone know where you could purchase fish skins like Sturgeon, gar etc?

I tan my snake skins in a solution made of 1 part rubbing alcohol and 1 part glycerin. Soaking it for a total of 7 days in a cool dark place, stirring once a day. Alcohol kills any bacteria and glycerin is a skin protectant used in most lotions. My snake skins turn out rubbery and very plyable. I still have the first one I tanned about 8 yrs ago and it's still just as rubbery as it was when I first tanned it. I wonder if it would work the same way with fish skin

You did a REALLY Good job of skinning that fish. There's barely any flesh left for you to remove. I think that that's especially impressive considering how flippin' hard that Gar-skin is! Hypothetically do you think that the hide is strong enough to make into boots, the same way they do with Snakeskin or Alligator? I have no experience with this kind of thing so I apologise if it's a daft question. Thank you.

I just finished skinning a gar for our buddy Rick Wallace. I didn't have any Borax so I used salt to start the drying process after I stapled it to a board, I was able to scrap the biggest part of the meat off the skin but when finished I could still see very small hair like pieces of white membrane on the skin. will this come off after the skin has dried out?

Very cool, we don't get gar very big way up in North Dakota, but we do have Northern Pike. I bark tanned one and it turn out very good. i used lye water leached from hard wood ashes, to remove any fats and oils from the skin, it also helped loosen the scales. You need to remove all the oils in order for the bark tea to penetrate. Not sure what the lye water would do to that gar armor.

Brian Leonard Borax Has very few ingredients in it, It has sulfonic acid, and Caustic acid which makes what they call in the soap industry a base. One has a high PH level and one has a low PH level. They mix them which is called naturalization. To a 7% Ph level, just as long as the PH is correct no burning effect from the acid. Other ingredients Nonionic, Sodium carbonate, and sulfate. These ingredients are used to take the oils out of clothes, which can dry skin, but no burning effect.
