Glad to see u and Chef James are doing more videos together. You two make one hell of a team. I already thought your channel had the best catch, clean and cooks on RUclips but ever since you've had Chef Yames on your videos u might have the best cooking period on RUclips!!!💯
I used to blowfish the Coosa River, and the Alabama River for years. We'd get carp, gar, etc... We also used to catch them on rods & reels... We'd buy the deepest-diving, brightest and ugliest crank baits we could get out of the WalMart $1 bin, and 55 lbs. braid, and spinning tackle, and we'd catch 4-7 footers all day long by the dam. We'd gar fish when the bass bite was slow in the middle of the day. We hooked into one, one afternoon, that was OVER half the length of the 16' Old Town canoe we were in... Line broke as we got it up to the boat, and never got a picture to prove it. The one that got away always haunts you the most. We never did try to clean and cook them, but I might try it someday. 👍🏻
i was abt to comment "why is there a lady talking in the background when u guys were going for bait and then I heard my name and I realised it was my teacher cuz i was watching in zoom class lmaoo
Nice work Victor! You've surrounded yourself with good people! You're fortunate to become a part of Brook's family! They seem like great people! I truly enjoy the catch, clean and cook! Yames adds a great perspective with his culinary experience!
Pops-in-law talking about the balls...I learned how to fish catching gar as a kid. Had a great friend whose dad was from S Louisiana who took us fishing a lot. He would use an ice cream scoop on the top loin of the big gars, and fried them and they called them gar balls. Great vid brother as always and very good/humble job with Yames. He is very talented and an awesome chef! Stay safe and God Bless
ROFL 😂 I just did the charter last week with Johnny... Awesome day btw... And he was so happy we hadn't hooked any gar. He's like "we can catch them if you want but I hate the things". Somehow Victor gets him to spend a day catching and eating them. Love this stuff! Love you guys! Keep up the awesome videos. BTW Captain Johnny knows that lake like the back of his hands. So he'll get you on ANYTHING you want to be on.
Howdy from Texas! I live on the second biggest lake in Texas. Lake Livingston. And this lake is fed by the Trinity River. The Trinity river is mecca for Gar fishermen. We have some of the biggest Alligator Gar in the world, as well as Alligators, and also huge long nose Gar. The easiest way to catch any type of Gar is with a simple Two or three inch length of nylon rope. You don't even need a hook if you are working it like an artificial bait. All you have to do is fold it in half making an open loop at the top end. Then using a standard Bic lighter weld Both halves together. Fray Both ends of the nylon rope , a fork works great. And then using a very stiff hair brush. Brush out the frayed ends. ( Keep the brush with you while fishing to periodically brush out the tangled ends of the frayed nylon ends. ) The genius of this method is because gar are extremely aggressive fish they will easily go after the nylon lure moving past them in the water. And when they attack it and thrash even one time. Their little needle like teeth get hopelessly tangled in the frayed nylon end They almost never come off. One caviat. Always use it strong monofilament leader or better yet a steel leader and decently strong line. Because once their teeth are entangled in the frayed nylon. If they break off. They will most likely die of starvation because they will be unable to open their mouths . That is the only real drawback to this phenomenal method. And if you are doing catch and release gar fishing. It's best not to use the nylon rope method unless you are very careful to remove every strand of nylon from the gars mouth. You can also use this method with a hook and bait as well. The frayed nylon will work exactly the same and you don't have to worry about every other Gar throwing the hook because it's really just there to hold the bait that attracts the gar.
HII ! u are my favorite RUclipsr I had a really bad fishing accident last weekend on Friday the fishing line snapped in my eye and I have been watching you day and night u have really inspired me and u are an amazing RUclipsr.
Once again, as always, yall killed it! Here in LA people often grind the gar and mix it with onion, bell peppers, etc. and then form it into a lil ball and fry it. Ive never had gar any other way, though l have heard its very much like yall are saying...tough. Tight lines boys and girls!
Such a Bruh moment. I found an absolute goldmine of Gar. Dozens of BIG ones in a little creek. And they bit everything you put in front of them, but I could not set a hook to save my life. Makes so much sense it was just sitting in their mouth.
Brook's dad is priceless! I love the sausage idea by Yames. I would really enjoy seeing a fish sausage as I'd never heard of it before and would like to see if it would work well.
Really awesome seeing such professionalism towards both the catch and the cook makes it so inspiring to see people use wild food and turn it into something beautiful and tasty. You guys are awesome great channel and great content.
Word of advice for those tryna clean gar. Get aviator shears/tin snips. They'll work loads better than those garden scissors. Also once you have step one done the armor should be able too be peeled away from the flesh. I've never done Florida gar cause I live in Texas but it should be about the same process
down in southeast texas we use a steel leader and treble hook to catch gar. on average they can be 3 to 5 feet. clean them up and cook it in tomato sauce with garlic onion and deer sausage.
Oh and for Yames, most of the folks here in Texas that eat Gar, make fried Gar balls, so grinding it seems to be the way to go. Again, great video I really enjoyed it.
We have tons of 5ft and 6ft gar here in Texas. But we also have a 1 bag a day limit on gar. If you ever come to Texas try the Trinity River. It has gar up to 10ft in it.
James you are an artist when you make it look that good you know it's going to taste good Brooke Victor you guys rock fighting the fires here in California 4 miles from my house I hope all is safe with Sally approaching God bless you guys stay safe hey Dad hell of a comment you're too cool.
Love your channel and the vids with Yames. Great fishing, great cooking, shared with friends and family. That’s what life’s about! PS: Brookes dad is also an essential part of the recipe.
I caught them in Oklahoma. I used a sharpened garden trowel to force them open. I heard the Indians used the gar outer armour as a quiver for their arrows. They cooked the fish whole, "Fished" the meat out and used the resultant tube as an arow quiver.
As soon as I saw he was just baking it I wanted to scream! It needs to be mashed into patties or fried. Still a little chewy fried but delicious. Best way I've ever had it is in a pattie/meatball with spices. I live in Louisiana and love to eat gar. Its my favorite fish to catch as well
I use a whopper plopper and replace the hooks with a size or two larger trouble hooks and they'll follow it and try to hit it mid lure then more times than not that back hook will actually set between the bottom jaw bones and its one of the best sight fishing experiences you can have! (I know, run on sentence lol)
If you got a big pot and cook cage you can take fish ribs and vertebrae and make a fish soup. it keeps the bones free and let’s the meat come off and blend with the soup
I'm from Texas...the gar you guys ate were small. I've caught 10lbs-40lbs.....the bigger they were, the better they cooked and tasted. We use a cooking disk. Cooking them like carnitas or tripe. Hot hot heat and like a steak. Try it some time ya'll. You'll sink your forks and knives like butter.
You should try catching the gar using nylon rope for a lure. No hooks, the teeth get stuck on the rope fibers... 6 inches of rope ,burn one end, and unravel the other side to make it look like a bucktail jig. I saw it on Richard Gene the fishing machine's channel. pretty neat way to catch them
Step one: use yellow handle tin snips (the yellow handles cut straight is the red and green cut left or right) cut the rear dorsal fin off and follow the top row of scales around the head and down the stomach Step 2: hold the head and use pliars or cat fish skinners to pull the sides off Step 3: filet the fish remember the eggs are toxic to all mammals they will make you sick and kill your dog Step 4: make nuggets then boil them in crab boil for 3 min shock in ice water then sauté in garlic butter and eat like crab
I caught a 4 foot gar in Hudson, FL and I made that same H cut it open with an angle grinder with a tile blade. Less work on the hands. We fed 8 people from one fish.
What restaurant does Yames work at? I would love to come and try some of his cooking. I've been following the channel for a long time now and have tried a lot of the recipes, wife thinks I'm a great cook (shhhh don't tell her) Keep up the good work 👍
La shark...Saw your jawbone clean and mount !! Excellent vid. so you seem to like handmade stuff.. here’s an idea for a vidjoe and an idea. The skin/scale from the gar pike family are used in costume jewellery by the natives(historically I’ve heard) in area Ottawa river valley. I wonder if the skin can be processed, using scales for decorative purpose? If crocodile works this should.. other fish make some good skins,,shark ? Etc.. the meat from the fish might be good in a philly fish chowda,, lobster,shrimp/squid,scallops,?
Alligator gar is only in northern florida! I learned about that when trying to figure out what the huge gar I was hooking were on the St john's in central florida. Long noose gar apparently, didn't know they could get that big! Lost a few 4-5foot long and learned pretty quickly that Circle hooks and gar to not work. Next time when the weather calms I'm going back with fresh bluegills and larger J hooks, or using a stinger rig with treble hooks for them. Just hope the turtles don't eat the bait with the stinger rigs but if they do and can't help them, softshell turtle is tasty too. I've had to keep a few turtles in the past due to gator chomps taking them out as I bring the annoying buggers in that ate my chicken livers or cut bait.
Just some FYI, there is also a Lake Ida outside of Interlachen, FL heading towards Palatka, FL on hwy 20. Here is the coordinates for Google Maps: 29°37'45.1"N 81°51'28.2"W I believe it is a spring fed lake.
Great recipe because here on South ( McAllen TX ) cook a litter diferente but with your recipe I am going to surprise mi family and friends God bless you and your family
And the whole "let em eat it" part is why most people that target gar use jug rigs and just leave them floating so the gar can eat it at will and then you just go find your jugs. Typically people use 2 liter soda bottles.
we had them in the fresh water lake I grew up in Michigan. We never ate them, usually either burned them or made them into fish fertilizer. They will eat every baby duck, goose, swan and anything else. They will empty a lake of fish in no time. So we went out at night and speared them. Probably a different species.
Watch Rickey Verret clean a garfish here on youtube, uses a hatchet, a regular knife, a cane knife, skinning pliers and a screwdriver. Takes him about 3 1/2 minutes to clean one.

Your father in-law is the greatest hype man of all time.
Would love to try that gar in some yellow corn, rap mix🙋🏾♂️
Never seen gar look so good.
I don’t really want to catch gar lol🙋🏾♂️thanks anyways much love...
i guess I am kinda off topic but do anyone know a good place to stream new tv shows online ?
@Grayson Gael i would suggest FlixZone. You can find it by googling :)
Bring Chef Yames back 😅
Much love from Kenya 🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪

Vic and yames are a dynamic duo and the father in law is the perfect Food critic
We love Yames on the channel. It always makes me want to eat the food so bad. It’s 2020, where is smell-o-vision RUclips?
You guys are living the dream. I'd give anything to have your life. Thanks for giving us a piece

DeCC lMFAO same
Capt Johnny is the best. I loved my trip with him a couple months ago.
Yames is the man with the plan!
Appreciate that your videos are not all about offshore fishing. A Florida fishing trip is definitely on my bucket list
You can see that this man knows how to cook. Thanks for the video guys.
Nice work Victor! You've surrounded yourself with good people! You're fortunate to become a part of Brook's family! They seem like great people! I truly enjoy the catch, clean and cook! Yames adds a great perspective with his culinary experience!
I love chef yames he makes everything good about the video
Yames prepared another beautiful meal😋 the kitchen cook together you two guys really compliment each other 🙏🇺🇲🥊🇺🇸🙏🇺🇲🥊🇺🇸👍✌️
Tin Snips and a hacksaw work well for cleaning gar. Use the hacksaw to cut behind the head and at the tail, then the snips to cut along the back.

Like it whipped you in the eye or went in your eye?
Coming up on hitting 500k subscribers!!!!! Way to go Viktor, keep up the awesome content man.
Seriously dig the combination of biology lesson and fishing tips. Victor & Johny, you guys rock!

Here in Mexico gar is called pejelagarto something like gatorfish I'm english, great videos watching from Cancun Mexico 🇲🇽
Yeah I've heard them being called catan as well.
Are they eaten there? I'm close to Canada. No gar here.
@@jacobmccandles1767 Yeah, people usually deep fry them into nuggets. Really good, doesn't taste fishy at all
That chef 👨🏻🍳 made a delicious meal , good catches guys 👏🏽

Brook's dad is priceless! I love the sausage idea by Yames. I would really enjoy seeing a fish sausage as I'd never heard of it before and would like to see if it would work well.
yames presentation is too insane
Really awesome seeing such professionalism towards both the catch and the cook makes it so inspiring to see people use wild food and turn it into something beautiful and tasty. You guys are awesome great channel and great content.
That looks delicious 😋 I stand by what you say no trash fish only trash cooks amazing video as always

I agree with James, put it in a food processor and make a paste that you turn into fish cakes, very good.

Old Louisiana recipe,gar boulettes,or balls,big time Louisiana favorite,for a very long time!

I have caught so many nice peas right in that spot on my kayak. That's a great canal.
Great seeing you catch some gar. Wish I could get two dry skins from a gar for a primitive project. Thanks for sharing.
Nothing wrong with your cooking Victor..👍....love your Videos..awesome stuff!
Y'all living the life another awesome vid
Yames is the man no doubt

Use a hatchet to get through the tough scales. Start under the back dorsal and work towards the head and its much easier/ faster than using sheers.
You boys are living the life! One day! 💪
As soon as I saw he was just baking it I wanted to scream! It needs to be mashed into patties or fried. Still a little chewy fried but delicious. Best way I've ever had it is in a pattie/meatball with spices. I live in Louisiana and love to eat gar. Its my favorite fish to catch as well
You guys are eating great food and I’m here eating a PB&J 😂😂😂😂 Awesome vid yet again
I use a whopper plopper and replace the hooks with a size or two larger trouble hooks and they'll follow it and try to hit it mid lure then more times than not that back hook will actually set between the bottom jaw bones and its one of the best sight fishing experiences you can have! (I know, run on sentence lol)
OMG YALL ARE SO GOOD WITH WHAT YA'LL DO, AN THE FOOD LOOKS SO GOOD I HAVE TO LAUGH!!!💯💯💯🤩
Man do I miss living and fishing in Flaarda. I fished saltwater primarily, but I used to love freshwater fishing too.
If you got a big pot and cook cage you can take fish ribs and vertebrae and make a fish soup. it keeps the bones free and let’s the meat come off and blend with the soup

My favorite people and yes your now in that now Chef. Lol Great video bro !! Keep fishing on.
PS: Hi Mom and Dad
Great video. I use tin snips to get through the gar when I'm cleaning them, and I like to make gar balls or gar fish cakes.
Johnny’s boat is fuggin siiiicckkkk bruh
You should try catching the gar using nylon rope for a lure. No hooks, the teeth get stuck on the rope fibers... 6 inches of rope ,burn one end, and unravel the other side to make it look like a bucktail jig. I saw it on Richard Gene the fishing machine's channel. pretty neat way to catch them

Yammmmeeess! Wish I could dine with y’all!
Step one: use yellow handle tin snips (the yellow handles cut straight is the red and green cut left or right) cut the rear dorsal fin off and follow the top row of scales around the head and down the stomach

If you remove the scales first it really helps speed up dressing the gar out! Also NATIVE AMERICANS USED GAR SCALES FOR ARROW HEADS
I caught a 4 foot gar in Hudson, FL and I made that same H cut it open with an angle grinder with a tile blade. Less work on the hands. We fed 8 people from one fish.
Very interesting fillet process. Looked very tasty as always.
Man that salad looks amazing and the fish

Where does James work? I’d love to visit the restaurant when in the area.
And the whole "let em eat it" part is why most people that target gar use jug rigs and just leave them floating so the gar can eat it at will and then you just go find your jugs. Typically people use 2 liter soda bottles.
How clean is the water in those canals? Would there be quite a bit of pesticides washed down from the lawns?
The Florida Native Americans have been eating Garb for years. Great job.
Hell yeah, this video is about to be fire
we had them in the fresh water lake I grew up in Michigan. We never ate them, usually either burned them or made them into fish fertilizer. You have to have big balls to take on gar lol 😂 your future father-in-law is awesome 👍
I've never thought of a fish as being "too tough", just nice and firm or mushy.
Wow! That looks awesome! 🤙
you channel is better than ///deermeatfordinner//// Bro, peace
put it through a grinder and make gar balls, or gar patties.. they are really good !!!!!
Gar is a awesome fish to catch🎣🐟🐠🐠🐠
Good fishing and nice location enjoyed✔️.
Bring back chef I like his good vibes!
That what families it all about ❤❤
Hey 👋🏾 Vic & brook awesome video . Can you all do a sting ray catch and cook ?
I live in Texas down here we make fried gar nuggets
Have you tried splitting them open and cooking them on a grill?
Neat to see you do something a little different. BTW, here in Texas the state record Alligator Gar is 302lbs. :)
Watch Rickey Verret clean a garfish here on youtube, uses a hatchet, a regular knife, a cane knife, skinning pliers and a screwdriver. Takes him about 3 1/2 minutes to clean one.
I think you should do a video of alligator gar vs Florida gar, I know people would love to see the comparison.
you guys should try to catch a mackerel and just barbecue it until the skin is almost burnt or burnt and just add lime after with raw onion.(only season with SALT, no preparation needed just barbecue it).DONT FILLET IT! barbecue it whole. gut it tho
You have to grind it up and make gar balls. Kind of like crab patties
In Louisiana gar fish are used to make fish patties.
